I am running my LMS with ~35.000 mp3s on my Synology 718+ and there is fiddeling and tinkering needed. There is an official package and also the option to run beta versions. Both work without any issue since I have first installed it about 4 years ago. Music is streamed through the house to about 5 different players (hard and software) without any issue at all.
Although I like the pi approach don't forget that setting up a NAS will give you a massive amount of additional functionality that you might not want to miss anymore once you get used to it.
