Re: [slim] What should replace my Squeezebox system?

2013-10-18 Thread Gingernut63

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 (ARM processor) running Windows 8 with
SqueezePlay installed. I've tried it with two DACs, a Muse Mini USB DAC
and a Behringer UCA202 with no problems. Won't use it this way myself
but good to know there are no problems with this approach.

Not a fan of Windows 8 but it's a much better fit with my setup than an
Android or Apple tablet. It's good to see that there are now multiple
approaches to running a successful Squeezebox system. Long may it live.

The Tune-in URL used to have options about which formats to return.
Perhaps (because of adding metadata) they are limtiing BBC to WMA and
perhaps the BBC geo-ip lock is messing things up (e.g. Tune-in is not in
UK and so it will get a non UK WMA URL which cannot be played from the

Re: [slim] Maximum number of hardware devices that can be synced

2013-10-18 Thread pippin

The mesh network has the same bandwidth limitations as other WiFi
networks, it would be even worse than the OPs current setup because it
will only use a single channel. Have you ever tried to sync 18 devices
with Sonos?
If this is really a bandwidth problem over WiFi or on the server side,
Sonos will not solve it.

I could still imagine it's an issue with the sync process itself in
which case tweaking the startup delays or sync delays might help.

Seems to be close to a Duet replacement, and fairly plug-n-plug.

At $239 US that is not a bad deal if it works like advertised and even
better is supported by the vendor and comes with a warranty. This would
also bring down the resale value of some of the squeeze players are

So if CSP carrier and associated software could act as an audiophile

Yes the CSP boards will have a builtin DAC, I have worked very hard to
make this DAC to be one of the best sounding DACs period. You will have
to spend many times the price to get an external DAC that will sound
this good.

If you already have a very good USB input DAC you can hook it up right
now to a Wandboard. The wandboard includes an HDMI out which can be
connected to any HDMI input screen. CSOS already includes a port of most
of the menu system of the Touch, although it has been designed for input
via keyboard or IR remote (via FLIRC) rather than touchscreen.

Future Electronics is also selling a touch screen that will plug into
the wandboard, the very latest testing version of CSOS includes drivers
for this. I'm not sure if the touchscreen input is supported at this
point.

LMS has a two stage analysis or URLS/playlist and perhaps it is not
using your DNS (IIRC years ago openDNS was used) - perhap you should
check by enabling logging for network.asyncdns

A workaround may be to avoid playlist and minimise DNS lookups by using
the real BBC URLs

BBC has many WMA URLs inside a playlist. The mulitple URLs are to
provide load balancing. Below are example of one of the URLs for UK
and non UK users.

Non-UK user
mms://wmlive-nonacl.bbc.net.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_int_ep1_sl1
UK user

you'll know it is a network overload problem.

Ah - but the streams work if I play on VLC using PC with vpn.

Is there a way to force LMS to use the openDNS address? My system is
set-up to use smart dns via the router.

On the other hand - why do the streams play okay if I switch the Touch
to mysb.com?

Touch - Muse M50 EX TPA3123 T-Amp Mini - Acoustics Q10 speakers
Logitech Radio + remote
Raspberry Pi + Squeezeplug LMS + Squeezelite - Logitech Mini Boombox
speaker
Cubieboard + Fedora 18 + LMS 7.8 + Squeezelite - Soundwave SW100
bluetooth speaker
O2 Joggler + SqpOS + Aune X2 T-amp + Mordaunt Short ms-3.40 speakers

What is the MMS url which VLC is playing ( I think you need to go into
Tools menu to find it)

As a control point the URL http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/r4.asx does
not play for me on LMS or VLC but the mms url will play. I think the
BBC have done something weird with their WMA playlist. This messing
with UK/non-UK WMA URLs happens about once a year although I don't
remember the asx URLs being broken before.

For another mysb.com test - you could add #slim:noscan=1 at the end of
the UK mms URL (i.e.
mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_eq1_sl0#slim:noscan=1
)- this will avoid mysb.com doing dns lookups.

If I use the vpn, then the asx url - with vpn - the playing url is :

mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_ep1_sl0

So, it plays the correct UK url.

(not sure I understand the mysb.com command advice).
