There is probably more likely that Logitech will spend maintenance

Pandora, Rhapsody than doing it for LMA.

There is every reason to speculate, we have no official communication of
support status from Logitech. I for one will not spend another penny on
Logitech kit. Many people on this forum are in denial. It's over. As
operating systems change, updates to LMS are unlikely. This was always
the case, no earning from LMS and permitting iPeng and others to become
cheap software players totally undermines any commercial opportunity for
this product line. Logitech's apparent radio only approach is a
sensible reaction to the environment that many external developers have
created.

So we get what we reap, the community can take over this environment,
but I believe it will struggle to maintain user enthusiasm.

One reason might be that the future support of SB depends on the success
of UE Radio which for obvious reasons is unknown.

See above. Since both servers are pretty closely related I wouldn't
entirely rule out new builds of LMS.

Blaming the situation on external developers it quite a stretch, and for
that matter the most commonly used software players was released by Slim
Devices/Logitech them selves, if anything I beleive the external
developers have helped hardware sales.
But I do agree the UE Radio is a sensible reaction, my impression of the
last years sales is that SB Radio has massively outsold the Touch, and
that most of those Radios only rarely if ever connect to LMS (actual
figures would be interesting if a Logitech employee happen to know). If
my impressions is correct it makes perfect sense to streamline the
products for the main customer group.

I don't blame the situation on external developers but the strategy (or
lack of) from Logitech. There was no protection of Logitech value,
consequently no business case. As soon as derivation of players
appeared on third party software products, there was an inevitable issue
for Logitech. I have no issue with these developers they did what is
natural, but it was bound to have consequences. I wouldn't invest in a
business that has no protected intellectual property anymore. The gate

Logitech apparently thought that there was a business case since they
forked over $20 million for the concept and the brand, what has changed
since then has nothing to do with the protection of their intellectual
property so I fail to see your line of reasoning. Software players were
available before their purchase so no difference there, and they've
never generated any direct revenue.

Have you really tried full synchronisation with software players ? For

The third party player apps are targeting a different use case than the
Squeezebox hardware, they aren't competing, Logitech doesn't have a
portable offering, instead the Logitech hardware and third party apps
are working in a symbiosis making the Squeezebox hardware even more
attractive. The number of people who get a smart phone Squeezebox app
and put it in a docking station instead of getting a real hardware
Squeezebox is not significant, people use these third party players to
listen to their LMS music in rooms/contexts where Logitech doesn't offer
a suitable hardware. Also, even if they would compete, Logitech would
get an extremely attractive docking station solution if they produced
and sold a great iPhone/Android docking station to be used with these
third party player apps.

An iPod Touch + good docking station is definitely more expensive and
more ugly than a Squeezebox Radio, so it's not even a cheap solution,
unless you already have a spare iPod Touch to always have in the docking
station.

Some tinkering is going on in the dimly lit dens of enthusiasts,
seriously doubt that it has made a noticeable dent in the hardware sales
for Logitech though.

As of now I don't think there are any software players that fully
emulate their hardware counterparts, especially when it comes to the
increasingly popular online music services, Logitech didn't give it all
away.

Seriously, look at the major changes in the way people listen to music
during the last 5 years, isn't that a more likely culprit behind
Logitech changing direction, rather than some hobbyists (who often own
quite a lot of SB HW) and a few garage companies messing with software
players.

Don't agree, at least the iPod system can be connected to a quality
stereo system, it will also have App support for the majority if not all
online music services. Squeezebox radio + Logitech online services are
limited in both respects, and now in some people's mind there is a
probably a commitment issue. I still have two SB3s and two Booms,
albeit one is slightly unwell, but I prefer the iXX solution with iPeng.
I can move it between rooms.

Each to his own. Best of luck with your future plans on LMS etc. I
made my hifi commitment sometime ago. Linn DS, but not cheap, and the

I agree with all you said, but this…
Frankly the Radio will not win a beauty contest, esp. with its
microscopic low-quality display (heck, the Boom was a bit awkward
looking too.)
A Radio is better designed than an iThing as a player, because it has
physical buttons, remote. And it can sync, so it functions better (in
this respect.) But I wouldn't say it has the edge esthetically.

Which works great unless you want a remote, because it's when you want
to remote control all these apps it's starting to get complicated and
Squeezebox have a gigantic advantage. Another thing is synchronized
playback between multiple devices, try to accomplish that with an iPod
with a non Squeezebox app...

Linn's future is tied to excellent audio quality and audiophile users
which doesn't necessarily mean streaming, whole house audio and
excellent support for premium streaming services or easy access to music
content.

However, if your main interest is great audio quality and everything
else is second to this, I believe Linn is a very good choice, definitely
a lot better than a Logitech device. Their Kinsky controller app for the
iPad is definitely one of the better UPnP controller apps I've seen.

Linn do achieve whole house synchronised audio, if you can afford their
devices. They also support AirPlay so you can get your streamed
services from an iThing, or a Mac. The issue is UPNP and cost.

However one of the users has been writing a server, which allows a
great approach to flexible music library searching, Minimserver is
definitely one of the better approaches to music library searching. I
think it is significantly better than LMS. It allows loads of variety
on custom tagging, multiple tagging etc. The writer has akenn interest
in classical music, and has designed great flexibility to support
appropriate structures.

The cost is is still an issue for most people. Whole house audio does
require different types of element, both physically and cost wise. I am
looking at AirPlay on the new Apple Express units (only 44 16bit) as a
stop gap.

The lack of repair for Logitech stuff is my problem (over the years I
spent over 1000 on their products). I have a boom that the knob
doesn't work anymore. Last year an SB3 died, replaced two SB3 power
supplies. One of my remaining SB3s has a display fault that's
intermittent. Logitech, unlike all the rest of my hifi stuff doesn't do
repairs. I obviously don't fit their business model. I hope the
engineers that gave us all the good times find good career paths, they
had commitment to a cause.

Hi Ralphy

Thank you very much for the Squeezeslave, it is working very well for
me, and it even can be synchronised with My Duet and Radio. All my local
music files are playing fine and most of the radio stations. But it
seems like all my Danish Radio stations can't play via Squeezeslave.

Here is the link that I use for one of the stations:

It can be played fine in the Radio and the Duet, but not in
Squeezeslave.

I have tried on two different computers with Squeezeslave installed
(with a Debian linux and the other with TinyCore linux). Squeezeslave is
version: squeezeslave-1.2-311

What can I do?

Some of Erland's plugins currently require a license. I understand that
if mysqueezebox.com servers are to becomes defunct he intends to make
arrangements for a license manager that is not dependent on Logitech's
servers.

For me, one of the biggest benefits of LMS is the ability to have menus
based on additional tags. Classical music without something like this
can be very hard to handle, particularly if you have several versions of
the same piece, and the piece is made up of several (sometimes tens of)
tracks. DLNA/UPnP is a joke for this. The SONOS size limitation is too
close for comfort. LMS with Erlands plugins comprehensively fixed this
for me, although not without considerable effort in tagging my music. I
dread having to find another way to catalogue and play my collection in
the way I want, and at equivalent sound quality.

Don't panic. If you've got wav files with cuesheets then you can
certainly solve this problem. Try some of the software linked in
earlier posts. You'll find something that'll let you split the audio
into individual files using the cuesheets and tag the files with the
metadata from the cuesheets. When you do this I'd recommend encoding
the resulting tracks in FLAC or MP3 since both those formats support
tagging (wav does not). Compared to MP3, FLAC will give you better
(perfect) audio quality at the expense of larger file sizes and reduced
device compatibility (virtually any audio playback device will work with
MP3).

If it were me I'd probably split my wav files into individual tagged
FLAC files then delete the original wav files. If I needed mp3 files
for some reason I'd use something like dbPoweramp to transcode my FLACs
to mp3 and store those in a separate directory structure (outside my LMS
library) just for use on my mp3 devices.

Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?

2012-09-19 Thread audiofi

Looking on the firmware listings, there is one from 2006 for the SB2
(which was pre-Logitech?)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine the SB2 was mostly off the shelf
components, add on the firmware and the Open Source software...

now there's a Kickstarter project!

Nah. There are loads of people already developing squeezebox-compatible
players. You can get them for most hardware already.

The elephant in the room is LMS. Nobody seems to give much love to the
beating heart of the system.

2012-09-19 Thread DC227

Does anybody know if Logitech said something about further updating the
Touch? I'm currently on the latest firmware. Just curious if somebody
knows something.

And, as it should be easily answered I will not make an extra thread for
this:

Is there a way to disconnect from wifi? I don't need it disabled
completely but my network is always marked as activated. I just want to
disconnect.

Thanks guys!

The expansion port is really used for factory test, low level software

It's not a supported feature of the product (i.e. when you plug
something into it and it breaks, it's not covered by the warranty).

That said, if anyone is interested in some low-level hacking, let me
know and I can post the pinout of the port.

Obviously yes!
This plug has several expensions (USB / serial / line in / line out) as
shown here http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Controller

moreover, in case of kernel developpement (I have one ex with a
half-broken lcd display ;), especially now controller is discontinued,
serial can be really useful :)

If any signal adaptation is needed, a circuit schematic on that would
help too!
