If you use lms and i’m sure there is a ”squeezeplayer” or someting that
can be a player on Andriod and there are several controll apps as you
now , then in lms you can configure bit rate limiting for that player (
its in the player settings ) having everything encoded at set mp3 rate
like 128kbps

Re: [slim] You learn something new everyday

2019-01-25 Thread Mnyb

Yes replay gain tags only teaks the volume at playback .

But never at a positive values because of clipping so there is a target
volume let’s say -10dB ( the exact value is probably something else ) so
the rg tags is an offset to reach the target volume usually negative .

Really well recorded stuff can have a small positive values .

But I suppose a reallly large positive value trips up the algorithm so
it does not dare to raise the volume to much as clipping may occur .
Or also likely the volume was so very low that you needed more than 100%
gain 0db at playback to match the other tracks .
The player can not provide more than full volume .

Re: [slim] Replacement Power Supply for SB3 Classic - USA

2018-10-27 Thread Mnyb

3 amps is not a problem , so the power supply from/for a Squeezebox
Touch would also fit for example.
The Touch 230v supply seems a bit more quality than the original SB3
230v supply ( if you have a really old pre logitech supply ).
There are also some audiophile aftermarket supplies , but they are a bit
expensive considering they don’t really improve anything possibly better
build quality .

Someone else knows the barrel conector spec I don’t, or search this
forum I’ve seen it spec in many other treads.

Re: [slim] SBR questions

2018-10-05 Thread Mnyb

Afaik LMS sends out some UDP broadcast on port 3483 . So this port
should also be open in the firewall if you have one .

Sometimes both OS ( Windows ) and routers can be setup not to allow UDP
broadcast/forwarding .

I concur with the recommendations to use a fixed or static IP for the
LMS server , especially with older players .
It has the added benefit of possible workaround when the server
discovery does not work as the squeezebox players has the option to
simply add the server IP . How is a bit different depending on player
model .
SBR if you have the controller find the add remote server option .
Otherwise you can specify server IP with the net udap tool.

Aaah iTunes and iPhone :)

Some more suggestions, feel free to ignore . I have a different pow
here..

I would considering converting the files to 24/96 for daily use . Keep
the originals backed up somewhere .

24/96 is already way beyond human hearing capabilities so you won’t
really loose anything.

And in the future buy 24/96 instead of 24/192 if possible you save some
.

What he means is that you could reconvert them m4a to m4a and see if the
original issue goes away .using a tool that’s not iTunes , he suggested
dbpoweramp

Would not solving the real problem be a better idea instead of naming
music files with a video format file type m4v is a video container .
Seems a strange workaround . A true ALaC music file should have m4a ?
Something is wrong with those files ?

Re: [slim] SB2 showing 3 different MAC addresses

2018-08-17 Thread Mnyb

It’s actually good that server prefs has the old cor ct Mac , I would
get rid of dupes with the wrong Mac if they exists .

Server id’s the player by the Mac so current playlists and history etc
and apps and screens and more is tied to the Mac .

Would mysb com update if you wait a couple of hours ? Or just conect
directly to mysqueezebox.com ?
It would be interesting to se what happpens then .

Are the mysqueezebo.com integration activated in LMS ? This synchronise
the settings between servers

Re: [slim] SB2 showing 3 different MAC addresses

2018-08-17 Thread Mnyb

If you hold the left arrow and go into the firmware menu can you find
and adjust the Mac id there ?
Or a factory reset ? Or a xilink reset ?

The player should have the Mac thats on the sticker on the player.

It’s sometimes happen on SB2/3 that they lose their Mac .

When the player has its correct Mac again revise your other problems ,I
think some of them would resolve after this.

Squeezebox2, Squeezebox v3, Squeezebox Boom & Transporter have the
following factory IR traps at boot time:
ADD - Factory reset
1 - Program Xilinx
2 - Factory test mode
3 - Audio sine test

People much younger than me thinks vinyl i kind of hip hence its current
comeback .

I abamdoned it in the early 90’s sometimes wonderng if i should take it

My parents also gave up vinyl at the same time , but i do think must
audiophiles are my dad’s ago or slightly older.
With them a lot of silly things would ll die.
Most normal people of that age probably have a harder time to abandon
vhs and fm radio at home ( fm radio in the car is sad necessity)

Yes thats what we ever wanted for 30 years :D some do actually . Used CD
is a good source and it is not piracy really (unless previous owner
ripped it before sale) , actually with the UMW watermark it can be the
best source for their music is all downloads are tainted.. shooting

SlimChances wrote:

Manufacturing cost was was not that much , I would say insignificant.
Pennies
Maybe more cost in selling in a brick and mortar store with people
involved.

Most of the price is and was for the immaterial content .

That makes 10$ not to bad for a download I pay that when a CD in a store
costed more than that a decade ago heck,I paid more 20 years ago, and
even today with competition from downloading CD’s are often more .
CD to sells in more efficient ways mail order from amazon here to you
mostly pay for the content .

However with sites like Bandcamp and similar there is a very low “start
cost” no glass master ofsett print masks etc to pay for like in a Cd
print.
So you get a micro economy where an artist can take the risk of
releasing even if his independent or does not project huge sales.

So I do think roughly 8-10$ is the price for the content .

If you want expensive you can buy from HD tracks in so called hirez
where they upmarket the price just because thier custommers are willing
to pay more for bitinflated content ?

Price and manufacturing cost never has simple relationships it never had
.

With the advent of everything “made in China “ for rough estimates you
can say the bill of manufacturing a unit is “0” ( ok say <10% of
consumer sticker price ) and price is made up of other costs and risk
and development other business costs ( like having a company ) vat and
vat and shipping and actually what a market would pay for a “thing”.

I thougth of it as a feature i only keep old stuff on the 2,4ghz
actually .
The 5ghz is used for everything else portable.

You can ofcourse use 2,4ghz for everything but squeezeboxes may need
some compatibility mode for g as they dont handle N or AC . Hence me
isolating them on one wifi .

But they are in fact ”one network” same subnet and ip range anyway

Re: [slim] Syncing volume on some players but not others.

2018-05-05 Thread Mnyb

And this is probably one reason the iPeng app has its own solution to
player volume when synced.

IPeng has a group control , you don’t sync the volume in LMS when your
an iPeng user .

In iPeng you simply control the relative volume of all players or the
individual volume off one player that’s it .

The volume sync in LMS is to simple it makes all player have exactly the
same volume that’s not really what you want.

Where the volume control is does not really say anything , it’s like in
spinal tap where a guy has a guitar amp that goes to eleven instead of
ten :) neither source output voltages or input sensitivity and gain is
standardised .

IMO using more than half the volume knob is good the pot is more linear
there , hence the azur could be sensible designed to not have to much
gain ei you have to twiddle the knob more .
In practice most amp has to much gain so you don’t have as much margin
as think , with a strong source it’s clips and misbehave long before you
reach the and of the volume control .
To much gain is usually for two reasons people can have old analog
sources with 0,25-0,5 volt output or less , think cassette deck old
tuner vhs player . A CD or squeezebox is about 2,0 to 2,5 volt.
And it’s impressive to the noob in the shop when the amp is “loud” whit
just a little bit of volume

Re: [slim] Squeezebox classic has stopped working

2018-04-28 Thread Mnyb

Ok you got a Touch .

You can try the SB3with the Touchs powersupply .

If you want to use Ethernet you have to do the network setup again , not
just connecting a cable .
If you are close to the router it is easy to try with a short cable .
No other weird issues it’s not rebooting itself ?

If the WiFi card is failing it can get all sorts of random issues . It
can be removed and there is a tread on the forum about replacing the
WiFi card the tricky part is to find a similar one .

Some chose to run it with Ethernet instead or use an external ap .

That could be a WiFi problem it's getting iffy with anything but 100%
signal strength 58% as you have may suffice for low rate MP3 can be
that LMS transcodes pandora then again you are at flac rates , and
server is also a bit old 7.9.1 is out now but that’s probably unrelated
to the problems.

Test to do .

Run the player wired with Ethernet . Also the pc with the server is it
also wired ?

If it’s working fine on Ethernet you may beging the tedious process
faultracing and improving WiFi or just accept that and go with Ethernet.

Yes if read the TI paper on the chip it seems that voltage is the limit
for higher impedance speakers .
And it’s current limited at lower impedance.
Not surprising.

Hopefully it performs “good enough” for the purpose .

My secondary system is probably worse , but fit for purpose , I’m using
small active foster speakers to lessen the clutter .
( inspired by this I think I move my much better Adam speakers from the

A real measurement is usually 20hz-20kHz continues at speced distortion
say 0,01% both channels driven at the same time.
At 8ohms speaker impedance .

These 25 watts can be peak short term at 1khz 1% distortion at 4 ohm .

Some even add the 2 channels together to have more “watts” ?

If you can’t find better specs , look at the power adapter/wallwart for
a clue divide by 4 for a ballpark figure.

These small class D amps they usually bend the specifications into to
pure fantasy. Your old Cambridge is large for a reason.
It produces 50 “real Watts “ room size and speakers and listening habits
predict your amplifier needs too .

A 5 watt direct from internet class d chip amp is usually sold as 20-30
watt depending on how they spec .

AndyTwizzle wrote:
> What should that achieve? And what do the other stream type options do?

For the AAC exemple it would NOT send AAC to the players it would pick
one of the remaining alternatives (in qualaity order and if the player
supports it)

It would then try to send FLAC and doing that by using faad/flac helper
apps and then convert the sound to flac on the server .

For ALAC it would try to use faad/sox .

These are just a list of options for how the server could handle each
file formats. And it would chose the "best" option for a given
situation.
It would naturally pick "native" first if the player supports the format
by or otherwise it would choose to transcode to a format the player can
deal with.
In 99 of use cases you should not change this.

In you case we want you to deliberatly disable native playback of AAC
and ALAC to see if the server does a better jobb with gaps as its
decoder migth be better.
So the server (your NAS) will transcode the stream to FLAC a formats
thats very well fsupported on th Touch .

In the web UI you have advanced then choose loging for example.
Read the log files and if that does not help there are settings to
increase log settings.
And also what are you trying to stream can we have a link ? Any plugin
or app involved

Also try proxied streaming .

And then some very simple mp3 radiostream with no frills ,does that work

That explains it , the eternal question folder browsing .
Sometimes it's not about the lack of tags or bad tags, one can have
other strukturer thats not representeraded by tags .
I use it once every 2 months because i have my library ordered in source
folders reflecting how i got the music , different downloads stores CD
or DVDA and more .

99% of the time I use search , artist random album or genre

Probably due to old tech .
more than 16/44.1 does not really do anything for anyone .
It increases bandwith usage . One of Sonos bragging points is there mesh
network that practically configure itself .
You can be a computer numpty and it sort of works anyway .

LMS and wifi also works , if you have a decent network :) how many
treads do we have with "my wifi is perfect" and I still have rebuffering
songs quit etc .
And squeezeboxes are kind of weak in the wifi department :/ not on par
with what you can do today . Rpi3 is not that good for wifi either .
Anyhow some stubborn fellow wants to sync 24/192 pcm over 5 players :D

Re: [slim] Logitech should resurrect squeezebox

2017-08-17 Thread Mnyb

Roon bussines model is not viable for squeezebox either .

Software = open source LMS = no revenue .

Squeezebox = DIY our own rpi3 = no revenue .

Enhanced interlinked metadata so that you can build a roon like UX =
licensed and costly (se all the trouble our comunity had with the lyrics
plugin and varius cover download utilities )

Wonder if not that was what the ickstream guys had in mind..

I know . Working in a multinational myself :) the top floor does not
really know what to do with smaller products even if they work well in
their niche's and even turn a small profit with reasonable margin .
They just cant fit it into both bussines model and organisation .

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2017-08-11 Thread Mnyb

Or use a switch ? That conects both NAS and the reciever to your network
?

How else is LMS on the NAS suposed to see the rest of the network ?

As you want to use net::udap you set up a reciever without the controler
.
The controller can do an ad-hoc connection directly to the reciever with
some loss to n performance.

But if you expect to use a smartphone or tablet or the web-UI
NAS/LMS/reciever must be on the rest of the network that everything's
else conects to ?

Re: [slim] Improving Wireless Strength on the Squeezebox

2017-08-07 Thread Mnyb

On the original topic .

30-50% wifi strength is not good enough it's till marginal close to 100%
is reliable .

LMS does not measure this in a good way I would say 50% is not good .

Bite the bullet and pull some Ethernet wires through the house .

On that other topic, no network topology does not make any difference on
a squeezebox as long as the player buffer is full .

http://archimago.blogspot.se/2015/02/measurements-intercontinental-internet.html

Archie made some measurements using my old server , when it worked
transfer music from Sweden to Canada to his Transporter did not cause
any problem that's just how it works .

But do try the turn off audio setting :) it migth work .

Reason for this setting to exist is that many DAC's and amps do not mute
properly , so some want the source on all the time to avoid clicks and
pops and bursts off noise . So that's why many have audio on all the
time , but the off setting migth help you .

But many Amps and receiver have done things to simple and only

Re: [slim] SBT showing wrong time in LMS after power outage

2017-07-23 Thread Mnyb

I think there is a step method and slew option in NTP dependent on the
config of it .

Slew slowly syncs the clcoks and it may not go backwards in time ? It
slows down and catch up when the real time has the same time .

The reasoning is that there are programs that react badly to sudden time
adjustments and going back in time .

So we see a slow gradtal correction .

Exactly as i says ,its sent as plain text from for example a browser on

Yes clear text and not hard to hack .

But social engineering is also a thing , people reuse passwords even if
you should not it's very very likely that someone uses the same
