The main purpose of the amazon app is to sell music which is ok. I do
like the fact that you can buy a cd and also have a good rip to listen
to at once. That it also let's you listen to some albums is a nice
bonus. It's not going to repace google or spotify for a good, pretty

Secondly, is he really helping high quality music? I don't think so
because his answer seems to be hi-res music formats. That is not a
 guarantee for quality music.
If you want quality music then one needs to address the poor quality
recordings and poor mastering process used today.

I like it that someone wants to step up and try to make improvements.
But from what I've seen so far from this Pono project, I fear that Neal
Young's project will miss its goal.

You miss my point. He can't change everything that's wrong with music
formats and he has chosen this way to try to introduce people to a
better format. Many people don't even know that there is better than
mp3. I love the fact that this will play mp3 so that people can use
their existing music and maybe take baby steps into better quality. You
seem to think that unless he changes everything that's wrong, then what
he is doing is worthless. I applaud him for trying.

Hi-res is not a guarantee for high quality music.
If quality is important then young should be talking to the music

Go to the Android settings and then Apps. Find Play Store and clear the

more and then start to add another few and I hit play by accident and
it erases the entire playlist. I would like the option to verify play
and add. Is this possible with your app? I think this would take care
of my problem. I'm using a Droid 2.

Or, if doing so drained resources needed for higher priority tasks. But
nothing would stop anyone from continuing to use what they have, as is.
Right you are and I can't say that Windows 12 will run the version I

As long as you have a version saved that works well with the classic
then you would only have a problem with new versions if they
discontinued support. Maybe mysqueezedbox.com would fail but it should
always work on your own library. BTW I really love my classic.

compilation album). This could be something like Mixed Singles. Then
add a COMPILATION tag (with a value of 1 without the quotes). Then
in SbS settings select the option of listing compilation albums
together (or something similar). Then do a clear and rescan within SbS.
When you're done, you should have an artist listing of VARIOUS ARTISTS,
and under this a single compilation album named Mixed Singles then
under this all these songs, with track artists correct.

But maybe I don't understand exactly what you're trying to do. I guess
I think of the world as rip all my CDs to FLAC, tag them all properly,
with album art, then play the songs I want to play. I wouldn't want to
just rip my favorite songs and create a giant best of mix tape for
myself. I can use playlists to do the same things BASED ON having ALL
the song tracks in my library.

Yes this is right and if you want to be sure I would add the itunescomp
tag of 1 also if you use itunes. It's listed in mp3tag when you go to
add tags.

[slim] Adding an album by folder view.

2010-08-14 Thread Nonreality

Just lately I've noticed that adding albums by playing them from the
music folder isn't working correctly. I've used this method for quite a
time with no problems but now that I've updated to 7.5.1 it's not
reliable. One album that I added put every song as a separate album
and the another made two albums exactly the same except for the name. I
wonder why this is happening. I've avoided running the scan for about a
year before this started. I'd rather not have to scan if I don't need
to. Once I ran the clear and scan both albums were correct so it
wasn't a tag problem. It just doesn't seem to add them correctly if you
just run the album from the music folder now.

The arrange audio function of dbpoweramp is pretty handy for moving
(caution-not copying)your albums from one disc or folder to another.
If you rip or buy music you can have it move the tracks and build
folders based on your criteria. Once I have it set up for my folder
and file structures it's just like the ripper and will use your tags as
you want your folders to be. Just start it and does the work from then
on. Best to experiment on an extra copy of your music until you get it
to do exactly what you want.

[slim] Norton firewall and antivirus

2010-03-04 Thread Nonreality

Just for some info. I used to love Norton Utilities. It was the
coolest program around back in the 90's. Very handy and did a lot of
things that other programs didn't. Then they expanded to firewalls and
anti virus and everything else and got a bad rep for being bad and a
resource hog. I tried it and I had to agree and stayed away from all of
their programs for years. I finally tried Norton 360, the first
version. While it had some nice things it was very flakey and not
reliable. I wrote to them and told them what I thought and finally they
released 2.0 which was much better. Even though they had improved it
still was a resource hog and I gave up on it. After about 3 months and
needing an all around program I tried the Norton Security. It worked
wonderful and had no problems with my SB3 or with resources. I've used
it ever since as my fire wall, antivirus and utilities and have not had
a problem. My reason for writing this is that I really badmouthed
Norton for a number of years and just want it to be known that they
really have done a good job over the last three years. I feel if I'm
going give a bad name to someone and they work to make it be better then
I'd better also say when they do a good job. So for 3 years now it has
been very good with my SB3 and I hope they keep it up. Not one problem
with my SB3 or any other program that I run. I've tried Norton 360 and
it was fine, but I seem to like the Internet Security version better.
It seems like it is better for the more advanced users, not that I'm
that advanced or anything. Pardon me for posting this but I feel I owe
them a bit for some of my harshness and I'm happy to see a company do
well by it's customers. I hope they keep it up.

thats barely enough to keep XP happy, and it upgrades all the time. So
what iremebered of XP was that use of system resources was creeping
 upwards all the time.
If you run some other OS i supose 512mB would actually be more than
 ok.

Have you done the streaming test lately how fast does it go close to
3000kBs is expected on an SB3 If one want to test the server trothle up
the network test on all players.

An bad example I know on my old XP partition i could never reach above
1500kBs but I think that was Nortons doing that something had gone
really bad about the way my computer handled ip traffic, i tried other
firewalls but once Norton has been installed in a system it's forever
 fubare'd .
Tried ubuntu on the same hardware worked splendidly.

I never seen any similar report on how to fault trace that. Is XP known
to having problems with moving data fast ?

Multiboot is a possible way to try things on slow machines (othervise
virtual machines or good). I have an Ubuntu partition and one XP
 partition.
You can do this with any combination you can run 2 different XP
partitions too ? that's a way to see if it is the OS or hardware thats
 misbehave.
If I understand you right then yes my results are 100% as far as the
test go. It only has about 20 feet to go so not a long distance. I
admit I've shied away from flac ever since i've had problems with it. So
right now I'm playing some flac music without a problem to test it out.
As far as using mysqueezebox.com it still only works while my server
machine is operating. The minute that it is off the SB3 says it can not
connect to the server? It's not a huge deal now but could be in the
future. So far the flac is playing correctly so maybe I have
overreacted to a problem that has been fixed. If so I'm sorry to have
brought it up again. But the problem with not being able to access
mysqueezebox.com still continues and that does very much concern me.

until now it had never happened. I'm pretty sure it's faster than a cell
phone. These jokes only go so far as I'm only able now to connect to
mysqueezebox.com when my computer is on. Both of these things are not
funny and not the best of things. I'm very worried if my computer is
off I'll not be able to use my SB3 and also I'm very worried that I'm
not going to be able to use all my flac music that i've already been
able to use for 3 years. I didn't read the rest of the post already so
I'm sorry if I got ahead of myself. I love my SB3 and don't want it to
become obsolete because no one cares about it.

Thanks for the replies. I had read up on the LCD interference but it's
on 24/7 but the problems only happen about every 2 months or so. Maybe
aliens are hitting my house bi-monthly with IR beams or something. I
like the idea of the using a video camera but don't have one and I'd
have to borrow it for an extended time to catch whatever is happening.
But thanks, I'll keep looking for the problem.

I really, really hate to see these SB3 failures as I love mine. Has
anyone created a study to see if these are do to a certain batch or time
frame? Mines almost 3 years old and I really depend on it. I would not
have bought it if it only had a 2-4 year lifespan. I expect at least 10
years for my stereo equipment and have always bought quality to make
sure of this. I would be very disappointed if mine fails this soon.
It's my most favorite device ever and it would be very sad if it failed.
Plus I can't afford a replacement right now.

I get 100% with my wireless all through the test range, so the network
is not the problem with the buffering. It never ever happened until I

with flac and I was shocked at first because I had never experienced it

Exactly right ModelCitizen. I have about 25k in albums and replay gain
works great. I use dbpoweramp but any good program like foobar or
dbpoweramp that uses replay gain as it is supposed to be used is going
to do what it is supposed to do. Now some people use mp3gain and without
thinking have it alter the music instead of just the tags and then later
also apply replay gain. Thats when you get into trouble because you
have double the replay gain that is intended. It basically sounds like
crap. But used correctly replay gain is great! There may be some times
when you may not want it with some classical, but you can easily turn it
off. I think a lot of people have a big understanding with what it's
supposed to do and what it isn't supposed to do. Myself, I love it.
Does exactly what I want.

useless and with no response. Yours has a problem but is no way
bricked. It plays music and is just not responding to the remote it

I understand that product problems often come from customers, and I
understand the difference between a forum and a support channel. It's
more the many times I've read an employee tell someone make sure you
report this in the system that I found odd.

It was almost as if the person was saying I could care less and I'm
not going to do anything about it, if it matters to you, you need to act
on it. It seemed dismissive to me, and perhaps bordering on rude
(there's the tie in to the thread). I guess maybe that's not intended.

 Thanks again.
I used to think that too, Goodsounds. Then I realized that it was
probably due to either the employee not being responsible for that type
of problem or that they were reading the forum on their own time and not
in a position do detail it out for others. It made sense then to me
that they would want to make sure it got made aware of to the correct
people that needed to see it and also having it come straight from the
person having the problem and not having things lost in translation by a
second party. But I can also see that for a lot of people filing a bug
report can be a bit intimidating. It is a bit confusing on saving your
bug report. I also know that sometimes I feel that someone else has
probably already filed it and I wonder if I'm creating a mess by filing
it again. Not sure how that works.

in those cases, imo, the employee has a responsibility to follow up to
see what became of it and file it if need be.

yes, its great that this forum and bugzilla is available to us all, but
lets not lose the big picture. the collective feedback, which is
uncompensated in any direct way, is to their business interests and
benefit. again, imo, we do them more of a favor than they do us, and as
such, they shouldn't be so reluctant to file bugs or whatever on what
they see here, esp if the person isn't going to. they are getting paid
 afterall.

In some cases I do agree with you my friend but I'm sure sometimes they
are off the clock and just reading the threads. If this was an official
support forum I would agree wholeheartly but I now don't see anything
wrong with making sure it gets into bugzilla by having the person with
the problem explain it themselves to make sure it gets presented
correctly.

I've seen a number of cases where a Logitech employee (Dean and Michael
Herger come to mind) has created a bugzilla report based on findings
discussed in a thread here. That always impressed me.
The new Alice in Chains album sounds great on first listen. I hope the
concert if you go to it will be great. I was fortunate to see them
twice in very small venues when they released Dirt and both were quite
an experience. The first one I was concerned with my life and the
second I thought maybe the police might start beating people. This was
in Spokane and Moscow and both were excellent concerts but kind of nerve
racking. But it made both one great experience. :)

[slim] 7.4 Radio Stations and bit rate.

2009-10-08 Thread Nonreality

I've been messing around with some radio stations on the new 7.4 and
getting some confusion. I'm listening to a station that is listed as a
128kbs stream but in the now playing window on the web ui it shows that
it's a 64k stream. Now the odd thing is if I go to more info on my SB3
it shows as a 128 stream. Which do you think is correct? I'm thinking
the SB3 info but maybe not? Any info on this out there?

2009-10-07 Thread Nonreality

You know I really like Squeezecenter 7.4 or Squeezebox server what ever
they are calling it now. But if they are really making it more user
friendly for the casual users I would think that a manual showing all
the settings and how to make use of them would be a must. Maybe I've
been missing that but it always seems that you have to search and search
to get info on settings and that should be a much simpler process.

The SqueezeCenter / SqueezeNetwork point is a prime (and to be fair,
probably the biggest) example. It's fine for those of us who have been
around a while and have had these concepts grow up around us, but a new
customer shouldn't have to read up to understand the difference, it
should either be obvious functionality or seamless.

Why in this new world should you not be expected to read a bit for a
new wonderful device. It's not like you have to read War And Peace but
just a bit to get the general idea. It's like everything else, people
just don't want to take some responsibility and want everything spoon
fed. Maybe I'm a bit harsh but man just take a little time to get a
clue and all will be well.

Find a ripper that you are comfortable with. I would go with dbpoweramp
for the tagging but EAC is also excellent. Then a tagging program that
you understand. Very important. I would use mp3tag but others like
other programs. Try them until you are comfortable. That is really the
whole story. Proper rips and proper tags. Then I guess is to organize
them the way you want. It's not rocket science here people or else I
wouldn't have had a chance.

Given the new products that Logitech seem to have in development
(Radio, Touch) it does look as if their engineering smarts are being
dragged away from software developing and fixing for existing products
and are working on the new stuff. Development of the whole new database
back end must also be a significant distraction. This is unfortunate, as
most forums on the web(correctly in my opinion) describe the squeeze
products as innovative, but really only suitable for geeks. I do think
Logitech should focus on getting their existing line stable.

 ..

I really think you hit it well with these comments. I think the SB3 is
a fantastic device and the only problems I've ever had have been with
beta versions of the software and never with the device. Those choices
were mine and not with the product. I understand the need for new
products but I really think that you should have rock solid existing
products before you move on. This probably only happened with the
Classic. The duet has been totally inconsistant from the beginning. I
stayed away and am glad I did. It has hurt the entire line. Some
people love it but more seem to have too many problems and this notion
makes people stay away from even trying the SB3. It's ok to have a
reputation of being great for geeks but not having one that alludes to
the fact that you need to be one. I love my SB3 but I hope that the
newer products start to create the idea that 1. They just work. 2.
They allow people that have a touch of understanding of computers to do
more with them than any other product. 3. You are not handcuffed with
a proprietary system that will not allow your system to grow without
spending a bunch more money. 4. You system will suite both casual and
critical listeners with ease.
But the first thing is it must work, out of the both with little
hassle. Don't release it if it doesn't.

Re: [slim] Defection and challenge

The problem with itunes is that if you do have a problem it's usually a
huge problem where it has corrupted files or more. It's a nice program
with too much overhead, doesn't work well with external hard drives and
likes to do everything it's own way. I'd much rather use dbpoweramp
with mp3tag and if needed for organizing, mediamonkey. The above
problems will never happen in this setup. Wait until you do have a
problem with a large library in itunes. Anyone that has knows what I
mean. Make damn sure if you do use it that you have backups that it
can't touch. This is my opinion for the PC only mind you.
