Depends on the player. If the new player honour the gain tag then great, but it was not a core feature. Annoyingly android core media playback services do not honour replaygain tags either, so I do wind up also permanently normalising my files used for portable playback. Like you say, no issue for in car playback. -Transcoded from Matt's brain by Tapatalk- -- Hardware: 3x Touch, 1x Radio, 2x Receivers, 1 HP Microserver NAS with Debian+LMS 7.9.0 Music: ~1300 CDs, as 450 GB of 16/44k FLACs. Re: [slim] Say it ain't so, Joe...no more CDs?
Fewer distractions when driving is a good thing, so I do my organizing for drive-along-music ahead of time. I prefer to use USB drives but have an ample selection on my always-with-me mobile for bluetooth or cable access via USB port. I always have a flash drive with newer music for checking out, but several others with playlists of one sort or another that get modified/supplemented over time - Alternate Takes (side-by-side versions of songs by different artists) or Male/Female duets, for instance. I maintain two libraries, one with files as I received or made them, mainly flac, and another at 320 mp3 for mobile purposes. Since neither I nor most folks can hear the difference between a 320 mp3 and a flac on great home equipment, I am confident I won't be able to hear it in the all-noise environment of the car. As for loudness balancing, I've thought of that -- but doesn't most file conversion software, e.g. dbPoweramp, allow writing of MP3s in a conversion process that reflect the Replay Gain tag on the flac? Re: [slim] Say it ain't so, Joe...no more CDs?
I've found most ICE systems have awful unresponsive UIs when it comes to browsing large numbers of files on USB sticks, tbh. And there's no search, obviously. And their format support is awful. I have everything ripped to flac for home use and a mirrored archive of ogg vorbis files for use outside the home. Despite ogg being a FREE codec most in car players won't actually play them. Even if you get the right format there are sometimes annoying revision or bitrate limits. Why Ogg not mp3? Well apart from the better sound quality per bit the main reason is Replaygain support.
I can't remember the last time I bought a CD in a brick-and-mortar store. I haven't been inside a Best Buy for many years, and I don't recall that I've ever been inside a Target. I don't really understand why anybody goes into places like that. Which is not to say I don't buy CDs, or electronics. But why go out among the grunting, belching, herds, when I can have stuff brought directly to my house? There are still a few items I go out to buy in stores. Musical instruments, I prefer to hold in my hands and try out before buying. Some foodstuff that doesn't really ship very well. Most clothing, I like to see the size and quality, or try on. A few other special items that can't really be judged by photographs online. But most of what I need or want, I select, order, and purchase online. This is, after all, the 21st century, not the 19th. Last year they sold over $40MM in CD's, and this probably means someone has figured out they can get even more $/sq ft selling different products. I do think that the CD will be relegated to the big online shops or specialty stores in cities. I imagine with Amazon in the market, the margins have shrunk. According to the RIAA, physical sales have been shrinking, but CD's along with vinyl still represent 16% of all music sales, or $431MM last year. Streaming is 62% of all music sales. The best thing about CDs is that they offer the biggest bang for the buck. They are priced low, and you can rip into any type of file you want. Although for me they are simply a back-up disc after I have ripped them. Oh no, well CDs are definitely on the way out in the shops. Only real way to get them are the big online stores. What a shame, but honestly I mainly listen to music from my NAs and not put my CDs in a player anymore. Not finished ripping my thousands of CDs yet, but getting closer... But what to do with all my discs? They are taking up many metres in my apartment. Just storing them in the cellar would be horrible, also they are part of me and someone coming to my place can learn a lot about me looking at my cds and books. Today all you really need is a kindle and an audioserver , or not even that and just Spotify or whatever streaming service. Well times are changing, but it is taking the personality out of acquiring and owning music. I used to love going to cd stores in different countries etc, but those days are long gone...
