Odd. I don't know bliss, but I wonder if that disk usage is only a
temporary thing while it's creating new copies of the files with
embedded art. Did you try doing it on a small subset of files, letting
bliss run to completion (including cleaning up any tmp files) and then
comparing the filesizes before and after? Even if that were the
explanation, that would be awfully inefficient disk usage while
processing the files. That's perceptive. bliss does create temporary files
 which are written
to and then renamed. This is to avoid any corruption to your music if,
say, you stopped bliss as it was halfway through working on one file.
However, it only does this a file at a time (create temp file, write to
it, rename it back to the original file), so you shouldn't see any huge
increase caused by this.

Well, good news and bad news. After I got my storage back, I re-ran
bliss. It needed to grab about ~900 more covers. I let it run
overnight, and that used up 127GB. I don't know where the 127GB is! I
look at individual music folders and they all look like the appropriate
sizes.

I have an external HDD with a backup of all the music files taken
exactly before I began the 'bliss project'. The problem is with
Window7, there is no way (that I know of) to see folder size without
actually clicking into each folder, hovering with the mouse over the
folder. With XP, you could use Details view, and sort folders by size.

Re: [slim] Tool to search for cover art in my library?

2010-11-09 Thread SamS

OK, I didn't try the windirstat program, it may be unnecessary. When I
got home today, I checked the available storage on my NAS. It showed
correct, i.e. the proper amount of space that I would expect.

I had a previous Windows explorer view pulled that showed the amount of
space available, it showed I had 325GB free. I hit refresh, and it now
shows I have 451GB (correct) free! Over the course of 20 hours, 126GB
magically freed up.

I ran bliss for a bit again, and happened to be in a folder it was
scanning through. I could see a TMP file that was jumping all around
in size, from 200KB to 90,000KB. I didn't watch it for long, but if it
was adding 90,000KB to each track it re-wrote, I can see how the temp
space used up could grow at an extraordinary rate.

Uuggh... this is turning out to be a big mess. Embedding the art is
taking 300GB+, I really don't have the space for that on my NAS, my
whole music collection is only 600GB!

After running bliss, I probably have 1000 albums with embedded art. I

I need to figure out a way to keep the art, but un-embed. Can anyone
help?

Also, when in SBS, I can't always see the art when listed by album
view. In my example below, the artwork for the album Arc Angels only
appears when I click on the album, not in the 'all album' or 'artist'
view in SBS.

Hey Sam. I responded to the email you sent, but it should just be a case
of choosing the 'remove embedded art' option if you are not wanting to
embed art. The cover.jpg (or whatever) will be retained.

For the Squeezebox Server issue with seeing art in the detail view but
not on the lists, try rescanning the music collection.

There is an option if you want coverart embedded or not.
It will then remove the cover art in automatic mode if I'm right. In
manual mode it will flag those albums as 'uncompliant'.
Be aware: even in manual mode Bliss will include covers for all albums
that don't have one yet. Manual mode just 'protects' albums, that have
some cover art already.

I did a backup of my music-collection first (should be done anyway) and
then just let Bliss do its work :D.

What kind of art files do you have that are more than half the size of
the audio data?!? For my library (and I suspect a lot of others) the
average is something like 25-40MB for a FLAC track and 10-20_KB_ for
album art.

I generally use a single cover.jpg per album anyway, but even if you're
embedding the art I think a audio:art ratio of 1000:1 is a lot more
normal than the 2:1 you seem to be getting. Even if you had supersized

That's right, open up 'settings', and for the 'Embed cover art in music
files' option there are three possibilities:

1) Ignore
2) Embed art where possible
3) Remove embedded art

For symmetry's sake it would be better if there was also a global
remove all cover art rule which also got rid of cover.jpg but I'm not
sure that's particularly useful :D

Yes, I know. That is why bliss was blowing my mind! I kept seeing my
available space drop a Gig at a time, and started getting worried as I
was about to use up all available storage on my NAS. I finally had to
stop bliss when I had 50GB of 1093GB remaining.

The cover art is typically only 40KB, and 99.9% of my music is FLAC. I
don't think I can figure the math on it, but if I have 22,000 tracks,
and they each get 40KB (embedded)worth of cover art, I still should
only have added about a couple of Gigs at most.

As mentioned earlier, most art was 300x300 or 600x600. I realize that
resolution does not correspond to file size of the JPG, but I could
count on one hand the number of times I put a large file (900x900) to
an album. Still, having bliss grab ~1100 albums worth of covers used
~250GB worth of additional space. I could get more exact numbers if
that helps, but I'm not too far off.

You're possibly correct, I've not tried installing bliss on a Sheevaplug
but it sounds like a fun use of my time :D

bliss just needs to be able to see the files via a file system, so it
can be local or network mounted. You can install it anywhere.

You then access it via http://[bliss ip]:3220/.

Note: you manually rescan Squeezebox Server after bliss has done its
work. It does not talk to SBS as such, it just works on the music files
SBS accesses.

Re: [slim] Tool to search for cover art in my library?

2010-11-07 Thread SamS

OK. I'm trying your Unlimited version now. I put in on my Window7 x64
desktop. It is taking a long time to run. Putting it on a Sheevaplug
would not be a good idea!

Why do I sometimes get un-compliant errors when only one of the tracks
is missing the art?

This would be for an album that initially had no art. I'm guessing
bliss finds the art, but for some reason it doesn't 'take' to one song
of 12 or so?

Re: [slim] Tool to search for cover art in my library?

FYI: I think it might be tough to run bliss on a desktop when your music
is stored on a NAS.

My work-around is to map my NAS to a network drive (i.e. M:/) and point
bliss to M: so it can scan/modify.

Another tip if you are considering adding album artwork where you have
none (or minimal) previously:

Embedding artwork takes a ton of storage space. I am rarely using
bigger than 600x600, and my ~1900 CDs look like they're going to take
200GB+ of storage space. That seems ridiculous to me! I might even
run out of room on my NAS discs at this pace.

I need to start basically from scratch to add covers to my music
collection. I just never did it from the beginning, and now I have
about 2000 albums that need cover art.

I run SqueezeboxServer on a Sheevaplug which is Unix-based. However,
I'd prefer to interact with a program like bliss via my Windows7
desktop. Which version of bliss do I need?

Where is your music stored? I have it on a USB drive connected to
SheevaPlug, but can access all music via a network share from Mac and
Windows.
Though it was a bit slower I had Bliss running directly on the network
share.

My music is stored on my NAS. Would bliss be installed on my remote PC
and interface with my SqueezeServer via IP?

I fear the Sheevaplug does not have the CPU power to run SqueezeServer
and bliss simultaneously.

This is a refurb of the old Album Art Aggregator and it doesn't seem
to work very well...

Bliss will fix your first 100 for free. I don't know about ongoing
cost.

[slim] Tool to search for cover art in my library?

2010-09-24 Thread tonyptony

I made the mistake of ripping a number of CDs to my library for which I
didn't scan the cover art right away. So now in my 1000+ library I have
a bunch of CD rips with no cover art. So is there a cover art tool that
can scan a drive and find directories that do NOT contain cover art
files?
