I'm not sure you're doing anything wrong in the 'protection' area, per se. When you protect a cell, or an entire sheet, you're protecting it from any changes. It's not surprising that, having protected the cell/sheet, options like formatting are ghosted. I'd suggest formatting, and otherwise

I think you guys should make a open office's big program suite for mobile devices such as pocket pcs, palm pilots, and etcetera. The word and excel on my pocket pc don't do anything except the basic stuff, and that is basically the same for palm pilots.
