Re: [slim] Leak, iOS 7

2013-12-14 Thread pippin

OK, let's keep leaking a bit :)
No screen shot this time but...

I don't know how many of you have, say, several iPads but here in my
home the iThingies start to stack up a bit.
If you do, you probably use iCloud, too and in this case you'll notice
that whenever you change the main menu the changes will automatically
propagate to all your other devices (I think it's only applied when
re-entering the App but you don't have to restart it).

And -of course- iPeng 7 doesn't do this between iPad and iPhone/iPod
since you really want to have a different menu structure on iPhone and
iPad, if only for the shortcut buttons.

I'm having a problem with the new app. It crashes on startup every time
on my iPhone 5s.

I've tried restarting, just in case it was memory constrained for some
reason.

It looks like it is crashing before it manages to send the automated
crash report (it crashes whether or not I opt to send the report).

I did try logging a bug on trac, but that is also having a problem, I
get an error page when I login. I'm not having much luck today

Yes, please. coolio att penguinlovesmusic dott com.
Did you try to restart the iPhone and to delete and re-install iPeng 7?
This sounds a bit like something goes wrong in the initialization
phase.

I also wonder whether it could be related to the In-App-Purchase, the
App Store seems to be down at times today and I've seen payment queue
crashes in one of my beta builds, an iOS problem. You could try to
disable In-App-Purchases in the iPhone's restrictions to see whether
that helps.
Did it ever run successfully?

are under myapps at mysb.com. Why is Facebook showing up. (Note, even
before I connected the ipad to my local network or mysb.com, the

Re: [slim] Leak, iOS 7

2013-12-13 Thread pippin

Yes, iPeng has a few Apps of it's own.
With the exception of Twitter they are essentially web site links that
open in iPeng's browser although Facebook specifically does some
additional handling, too.
They are meant to play links from web sites on your Squeezebox so you
can use this Facebook App to play those Spotify links your friends
post (for example).

It's been there for a while under App Gallery-iPen Apps.
The reason it now shows up by default is threefold:

1. There is no longer a registration menu for Facebook. Sharing on
Facebook, Twitter etc. is now done through the standard iOS control in
iPeng 7 (knowing the user has iOS 7 helps so much with some things)
so the whole Facebook authorization code is gone.

2. Logitech discontinued the Facebook App so some users (it had quite a
number of them) might want a replacement and not everybody always visits
the App Gallery.

3. It didn't really make sense to add another configuration menu for the
Facebook item, now that the main menu is fully configurable and you can
hide anything you like.

Re: [slim] Leak, iOS 7

2013-12-11 Thread pippin

Hey, that has been around for almost 18 months now ;)
That said: unfortunately it's really a hack using iPeng's web browser
(the reason for the 17+ rating) to get access to the track streams.
All you can do is play single streams and even these only from the Now
Playing section in Google music (by pressing the play button). And
even that doesn't always work.
There is no deeper integration that would allow for things like metadata
lookup.
Also, there is no direct communication between the Google service and
the Squeezebox so things like radio stations/dynamic playlists will not
work. For these things there would definitely have to be a server side
plugin.

On the upside... Google seems to have fixed their mobile skin so that it
also works in portrait mode and Google seems to have extended the
lifetime of their stream links so songs that do work have more than a
few seconds to start

Re: [slim] Leak, iOS 7

2013-12-11 Thread Webkemmi

Of course the new iPeng 7 is a must have for me and I immediately bought
it. The new functions are great and I like the new fresh iOS 7 design
but there is one thing I am missing: the absolute smooth scrolling of
the Album covers in iPeng HD. With iPeng 7 scrolling stutters a bit on
my iPad mini first gen and even on my new iPad Air.
Is it possible to get iPeng 7 as smooth as iPeng HD in further
versions?

Greetings

Re: [slim] Leak, iOS 7

2013-12-11 Thread pippin

I know, I have been working on this a bit after the first release
although at least on the Air it should become smooth as soon as the
artwork is fully cached.

There are several aspects at play here:

1. Scheduling is worse under iOS 7 than under iOS 6. The same code just
compiled under iOS 7 performs much worse, especially whenever disc write
operations are involved, even if they happen in the background.
I was able to mitigate this by running more of the artwork handling in
the background but I wasn't able to get this stable and I suspect some
of the performance gain comes from losing some artwork.

2. I iOS 7 loses a lot of performance through the live blur effects, in
this case for the navigation bar (header). This doesn't apply to the
mini (where I believe it's always turned off) but it helps to turn this
off: Settings-General-Accessibility-Increase contrast. It will not
affect iPeng's own effects on the NowPlaying screen.

3. I do now support track artwork for the current playlist.
Unfortunately this makes the artwork handling a bit more complex since
another lookup step is involved. If a lot of artwork is being loaded, a
lot of performance is lost.

But all of that said: I did find a few optimization a that will make the
next update perform better plus you'll notice a significant speed up
once the artwork is cached.

Indeed this is not an update. It is an impressive re-take on the subject
matter and, as the original was, an excellent value.

Thanks for pouring so much thought, effort, and no doubt love, into
iPeng 7 for iPad

(BTW, I have not seen any issue with scrolling, everything is quite
zippy on iPad Air. The same artwork was sometimes making my previous

That has nothing to do with the Wandboard. Your Wandboard is simply
connected to a different server. iPeng only controls players connected
to the current server, all others can just be moved to the current
server (unless you switch, of course).
I found having full control about players on other servers too costly
due to the pretty verbose player status updates I would then also have
to subscribe to there.

It's indented to show it belongs to something, in this case the server
it's connected to. Synced players are shown in a similar way below a
master.

Yep. Like before.

Apple.

iPeng contains a web browser and Apple requires Apps that contain a web
browser to be rated 17+.
Now, since you can't just say my App is rated 17+ and Web Browser is
not a valid reason you have the choice of vice. Explicit violence
sounded even less appropriate

It didn't always get enforced and iPeng for iPhone always slipped
through but iPeng for iPad and iPeng UE also had that rating for quite
a while now.

I'm definitely upgrading, it's a great app right now and the new version looks
way better and nicer for iOS 7.

Just curious, what's the discounted price and what will the price be once the
discount ends?

And once I buy it, I assume I can just delete the old version -- you mentioned
that an existing in app purchase will carry over to the new version. Is that
right?

Thanks, I'll use your link.

Weirdly search still only shows me the old version (I'm searching for ipeng
-- I also get ipeng ue and ipeng party as matches), and searching for
ipeng 7 comes up empty. Maybe they update their search indices in batch
overnight or something...

But it's true, this is a bit weird, I can find the App by following the

Oh, yes!

You need to install Michael's plugin (Music and Artist Information) and
you need to run LMS 7.7.2 or newer, I believe (iPeng is not limited to
7.8 like the web interface).

Absolutely worth it

Re: [slim] Leak, iOS 7

2013-12-10 Thread pippin

To stay a bit on topic... ;)
There's one new thing I didn't show, yet, and that's the new player
list.

In the old iPeng, it seems like I was the only one who found grouping
synced players under their playlist somewhat intuitive so this has now
changed. Each player shows it's playlist unless it's synced to another
player in which case it will show indented and with a sync icon. That
sync icon doubles as an unsync-button.
Also, dragdrop has changes (like everywhere in the App): now you can
hold a player briefly (even without hitting edit first) to pick it
up and the list clearly shows you where you are about to drop it (sorry,
can't show that in a screen shot, I need to eventually need to do a
video for these things). The target player gets inverted so you really
know what you are syncing to. The same goes for servers.
And to un-sync you drag it on the empty space between the players.

The check-and-click sync interface is still present, too, of course.

And another new feature is a toggle (top left) to turn off the player
controls. This is especially useful with many players on the smaller
iPhone screen.

And something else that has changed is the power button. You might
already have noticed it on the main screen but in iPeng 7 the player
icon no longer doubles as a power-button. Something else nobody seemed
to have found intuitive... The idea has been that it's a large icon that
is easy to hit and that takes up space anyway but people just tried to
hit the small power symbol on the icon.

Got the app last night and it looks good so far.

I'm really pleased to see the iPeng app 'Google Music' (it took me a

though the app only gives access to the free version e.g. I can't see
Radio/'Create new station' option and I can only access my own music
when I use the Search button.

I'm currently subscribing to the Google Play paid version - is there a
way of logging in so I can access the radio and search the Google music

Monday night, let's talk playlists...

The normal mode for the current playlist is to have it in an overlay
like in the Mail App. You can open it using the playlist button or swipe
it in from the right.

In landscape mode only, you can alternatively pin it to the content area
to have it permanently visible.

Good to hear that. Will make sure Mateusz learns about it. I believe he

complicated. We needed both outline and filled versions of all icons

 release?

Ha, depends a bit on _why_ you actually found it to be cluttered.
The iPad main screen is probably the biggest change in all of iPeng 7...
which is why I held it back so far :)
And I was never very happy with the old iPeng for iPad layout, I did it
in the early days when iPad design was new and some of the ideas - like
using large background areas in the top bar as control elements - turned
out to be really not a good idea.
Also, following Apple's original iPad Music App scheme in showing a
cover in a somewhat big area at the bottom left and cramming all other
control functionality into the top bar probably led to a bit
disorganized and crammed appearance. It was not so much a question of
the actual number of buttons (iPeng for iPad actually had _fewer_
buttons on screen than the other iPad Apps) but more a question of
arrangement and use of whitespace.

All of this has changed.

On the other hand, there are two principles I followed which led to a
somewhat cluttered appearance that I did not change and that I will not
change:

1. iPeng does and will always try to make available space usable for
actual content. If you browse your library, you can use your beautiful
artwork to browse in a tile mode (and artist images, too, if you use
Michael's Music and Artist Information plugin). And iPeng will fill your
screen with it.
iPeng will not clean up it's design by filling 1/3rd of your screen
with whitespace and 1/3rd with a static cover while cramming all of your
menu content into an area only amounting to 1/5th of the screen space
like some other Apps do.
If this leads to a cluttered appearance then so be it, if your content
is not as important to you as a tidied up main screen appearance then
iPeng is probably not for you.
In iPeng, if you only want to control a player there are beautiful
screen savers that can really get out of your way while giving you _all_
player controls, there is absolutely no need to replicate that on the
main screen.

2. iPeng will continue to always show the main menu. This is another
usability thing. It means the main menu stays around taking up some
space (although it can get really much less in iPeng 7) but the effect
of this is that you don't have to always go through the main menu when
you are watching at, say, your Rhapsody Albums and you want to briefly
check your own Albums to see whether you've got something by a certain
artist yourself.

That said: in iPeng 7 you pretty much have the choice on how you want to
use the screen estate. Especially in landscape mode you can cram quite a
lot of stuff in for those people who want to see everything at one
glance or you can move most stuff out of the way and just focus on the
library.
And when I say you have the choice then that doesn't mean you have to
use a setup menu ;)

So... Let's have a look at what is probably the most cleaned-up version
of the main screen in iPeng 7...
Ha.. And this time I will really hold back with more until some people
take notice at least some of the news hidden in here :)

I should have said that I wasn't trying to be negative. :-)
I agree with you when you say that iPeng should, and is, making the best
use of white space. My comment was more related to the use of the upper
area of the screen. That area was crammed with a lot of controls, hence
the clutter. I noticed in the screenshot that you now have moved some of
those controls over to the bottom of the screen. And that looks a lot
better, less cluttered.

I also like what you did with the left area of the screen. Showing only
the icons reduces some clutter as well. Less text on the screen is good.
Our brain tries to read and understand everything that gets projected
(natural behavior). The new layout is quite gentle to our brain! Nice
work pippin, I'm looking forward to this update!
I must admit that I use my iPad 99% in landscape mode. I guess that
orientation will have the same modifications?

2013-12-08 Thread pippin

Pascal Hibon wrote:
I should have said that I wasn't trying to be negative. :-)

Yes, didn't take it as that. Just trying to explain.

I think it has always been a good idea that neither Stefan with
SqueezePad nor I with iPeng have ever really tried to copy each other's
App. They both have very different design ideas which means they cater
to very different users. Which is good. Better have two Apps that
completely different users like than having two similar Apps which are a
bad compromise and don't really fir anybody.

My comment was more related to the use of the upper area of the screen.
That area was crammed with a lot of controls, hence the clutter.

Yes, and as I said: I was well aware of it and it definitely wasn't
good.

I also like what you did with the left area of the screen. Showing only
the icons reduces some clutter as well. Less text on the screen is good.
Our brain tries to read and understand everything that gets projected as
fast as possible (natural behavior). The new layout is quite gentle to
our brain! Nice work pippin, I'm looking forward to this update!

Well, at the same time nothing tests as well in usability tests as
simple, deep, text-only menus :)
Why? Because you can understand them simply by reading them and that's
what people find intuitive.
They really start to get on your nerves after a week when you are used
to an App and they are boring and just holding you up but no usability
test ever tests for so long

So iPeng has it both ways. This icon view is strictly optional, much
like in the old Twitter App. Here's the startup look. To get to the
view above, just move the whole content area to the left with your
finger

I must admit that I use my iPad 99% in landscape mode. I guess that
orientation will have the same modifications?

Sure. Although landscape view has a few additional options not available
in portrait, but I need some more news to fill the next week with ;)

Now... Nobody noticed the tiles? Meh... so much work...

That only shows that you don't explore iPad Apps for gestures which is a
_really_ bad idea in iPeng 7 since I haven't finished the help screens
for the first release and it's full of shortcut gestures.
The icon view is of course available in landscape as well...

Regarding the truncated icon: hm, nobody reported that so far, only for
the edit menu. Will add a default icon for the first update.
That said: what menu is this? I'd like to know about all of the menus
that don't have icons, yet (probably a lot more) to fix that.

Well, until iPeng 7 you've never been able to really disable the default
menus in iPeng, haven't you? This is different now.
And regarding the library menus... I will probably have to develop a
logic over time to add icons to arbitrary menus as well. There are
already a few, for example, there is the audiobooks menu shown in
these screen shots (a Custom Browse menu with the ID of audiobooks)
and there are also icons for Composers, I believe.

And regarding the text I assume my last post answered that part

It's the MusicIP Moods - a rather little known feature of the MIP

Does that still work? What's it's menu ID?
Does it have an icon?

And a more general question Does it even make sense to show a
default icon instead of the text? I mean... The text might not really be
beautiful but then having three identical default icons on your main
menu in this view probably wouldn't be very helpful either. OTOH you
only have _one_ item without an icon

Yeah, using default icons might be ok in a mixed icon/text menu, biu not

The album cover is small and in the top left now (does it still have the

Volume lower right
Power button is lower left
The tiles are very sharp
The icons on the left (no text) really cleans up the look
Is the multi-player control in the lower left, next to the power

Actually, what I would like to see change on the iPad is the Now Playing
screen, which IMO isn't cluttered enough. Rather than using nearly the
whole screen for the current album cover, which usually too low of
resolution to show well, I'd prefer a smaller image together with more
info about the playing song, like the tags (e.g. comment, composer,
conductor, etc.). I'd even consider things like lyrics, album review,
and trackstats in tiles on the screen. While I understand that all three
Now Playing screens are designed to be viewable from a distance, I
always have the iPad in reach, and it would be nice to also have a
closeup Now Playing screen that is a more detailed view of the song.

It's for last.fm. You can love any track directly unless you have
TrackStat enabled (in which case the rating stars take the space of this
control). Most people will probably not use _two_ rating systems in
parallel but this way you can no longer only love tracks played from
last.fm directly.
star is for Spotify and only available if you play Spotify tracks.

the App. iPeng has been out for 5 years now and has had over 40 free
updates per version. The average iPeng user has been using the App for
more than two years and a development like this is not something you do
in a few weeks in your spare time.
I had to justify the development somehow and a new App was the only way
to do it.

There's another aspect as well. iOS 7 is a huge change from a UI
perspective and I find it almost impossible to do a non-trivial UI that
works well on both iOS 7 and earlier versions.
So updating the App would have meant to leave behind all future support
for older devices. I don't want to do this either.
The old iPeng versions will continue to get updates, although it's
unlikely that I will port any all-new features to the old iPeng because
there are a lot of fundamental changes in the underlying APIs used that
will probably not allow me to easily port these parts. But especially
any updates to the player functionality will go into the existing iPeng
versions as well so that you can always use older devices as players.

That's okay too. As you say I've been using iPeng and iPeng HD for
quite a long time. I'm happy to pay for your new app (I just need to
know when it will be available).

Yea, well, _that_ is something I would like to know too.
It's waiting for review at Apple. My experience with new Apps is that
you have to expect it to be rejected at least once so with a little luck
it'll be in the store end of next week, otherwise hopefully the week
after.

I've only just bought iPeng HD for iPad but it's so good on the iPad
that I'll happily pay for this as well to support its continued

Wow! You got in my most desired feature: multiple artist support. Thank
you so much! I don't want to distract from this thread, but I had been
holding off on making any ipeng comments just assuming it wasn't being
actively worked on, so feel free to ignore if this is off-topic. One
small change that would also be huge to me would be for the star rating
control to allow half-stars (I find I need to set ratings from 1 to 10
instead of 1 to 5 to be at all useful). Perhaps something like
'JustWorks:AHSStarRating'
(http://just-works.blogspot.in/2012/12/ahsstarrating-for-ios.html) would
just work.

Regarding half-star ratings; that's the feature I always forget about,
sorry. It's a bit complicated with determining the scale to use and I
don't use them myself. I'll try to remember it for one of the first
updates.

I know, but they were not anywhere as big as this looks to be. I figured
you were focusing hard on Ickstream, etc. and figured I should just be
grateful for whatever we got. I clearly underestimated just how
awesomely productive you are :)

Re: [slim] Leak, iOS 7

2013-12-05 Thread pippin

Well, no. As you can see the screen saver still has three subpages and
that would conflict with using gestures for playback control. It stays
around on iPhone in landscape mode but that's the only place right now.
iPeng will make massive use of gestures in other places, though,
especially on iPhone.

No, the detail I mentioned here is that I finally did a long-requested
feature which is to show all artists tagged for a track in the
NowPlaying screen, not just the albumartist as before. :)
And then there is of course some design hint for the NowPlaying screens
which is admittedly barely visible here but absolutely gorgeous on some
of the other NowPlaying screens :)
