template (eg. Default) upon which the document is based.

* Changing the Document Properties Title field in a new or existing
document blanks the field in the saved file.

* Opening the saved file in any other version of LO restores the field
lost in version 7.1.0.2

Thanks
Dave

When I open an untitled text document, under File > Properties >
Documents, the title field is empty. This is true for both 7.1.0.2
Debian and Windows. Where are you finding the term "Default"?

I have installed 7.1.0.2 (Debian). File > Properties > Description.
In the Title box of a newly created text document, I entered "This is
a text". I saved and named the document. Then  I opened it in
7.0.4.2.  I got the same results in the Title box. I added ", but it
has changed". Finally, I reopened the document using 7.1.0.2. The
Title box contained "This is a text, but it has changed". I have not
checked on Windows yet. I will report of this shortly.

I have now created a new document in Windows using  7.1.0.2 that I had
just installed. Then I Entered "This is text" (without quotes) in the
Title box. I clicked OK and same this file to a thumb drive. Then I
switched back to Ubuntu 20.04. I opened this file on my thumb drive
using 7.1.0.2 (Debian). What I saw was "This is a text" (again without
text. Sorry, Dave; I have not had the same problem as you seem to have.

[libreoffice-documentation] Major problem: LoGuidesStyles.oxt extension

2021-01-04 Thread Dan Lewis
I use LibreOffice 7.0.0.1 on Ubuntu 20.04 (up to date). After installing
this extension and then opened a new document in Writer.

I typed the following sentence with direct formatting of all
character styles used in it: The sly red fox *jumped* over the lazy
brown dog. None of these character styles were highlighted.

This time I typed the sentence again. This time I applied the character
styles for these three words (red, jumped, brown). I got the following
result when using this extension to highlight character styles.

The sly /red/ fox *jumped* over the lazy /brown/ dog.

This is the opposite of what we want. Direct formatting of character
styles need to be removed: character styles found in the Style toolbar
in the Character styles list (right side of the Writer window)are to be
kept. My firs example should have red, jumped, and brown should have
been highlighted. In the second example, there should not have been any
highlighting.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Producing guides - add a "Cleaned" directory

2021-01-03 Thread Dan Lewis

Two questions:

1) What are the OS that this will work with?

2) Where are the directions on how to use it?

Hi Steve,

yes, please, use that file.

I would like to ask you (and anybody else) to help in testing of the
LoGuidesStyles.oxt extension and document cleaning.

The extension is available from
https://github.com/milossramek/translation-scripts/tree/master/odtclean
and it highlights character styles. I created it to be used in manual
style checking, but if used during editing it enables full control over
direct formatting/styles and thus makes additional checking not
necessary. But, maybe, all these colors are disturbing in editing – I
would like to know your opinion on that.

I have written here several times about using the script odtclean.py. It
is, however possible, that it is not necessary to use it at all, since
the Format/Clear Direct Formatting works good enough. I wrote the script
5 years ago because the Clear Direct Formatting command corrupted the
LOGuides documents (mostly lists). I've tested Clear Direct Formatting
on several documents now and it works without problems (I've noticed
just insignificant changes in paragraph spacing in some documents). It
cleans the document nearly as good as the script (does not clean image
captions and does not merge neighboring styles of the same type, but
these are not a problem).

Please, test it, too. One cannot run the command on the whole document
(CTRL-A) – it is necessary to use it in two steps: first on the text
before the table of contents and then on the rest after the table of
contents.

If these two steps work well, the extra cleaning step in the workflow
will not be necessary

thanks
Milos

manually and by the script. You can find the archives in
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/apps/files/?dir=/Shared/SK%20community/Cleaned=322834

I suggest to replace the chapter files in the Published directory by
their cleaned versions without producing the full odt and pdf book.
Thus, the next version will start from the cleaned document.
If you agree, I will replace them.

I've created a simple extension, which highlights the character styles
used in the guides:
https://github.com/milossramek/translation-scripts/tree/master/odtclean
https://github.com/milossramek/translation-scripts/blob/master/odtclean/LOGuidesStyles.oxt

If highlighted, an author can see if styles are really used instead of
direct formatting - in that case additional manual cleaning would not be
necessary and it would be sufficient only to run the script. I suggest
then to produce the cleaned files after publishing the guide.

To summarize, I suggest to include two additional steps to the Producing
LO Guides document
- for authors: use the extension and use the character styles
consistently
- for a specific person (me for now): to run the script after publishing
the guide and to replace the chapter files in the published directory

Hi,

I suggest to include file cleaning in the workflow. In cleaning one
removes direct formatting, which is necessary for translation.
Currently
I do that after a guide is published - the cleaned files can be found
here:

https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/index.php/apps/files?dir=/Shared/SK%20community/Cleaned

The current problem is that nobody knows about them and a new
version of
a guide starts from an uncleaned version in the Published and thus I
have to repeat the laborious manual cleaning part again an again.

BTW, last time I tried odtclean.py in my Linux box it failed, something
related to python version. Actually, is it still of use?

My suggestion is to add another step after step 7 in the "How to
publish
a chapter" section (page 15, 2 - Producing LO Guides.odt): a "Cleaned"
directory, the contents of which will then be used to start a next
version of the guide. I will then produce the cleaned files.

I think the cleaned files should be the published files. In other
words,
only publish cleaned files.

Not sure what you mean with parent item 1 and so on.
Presentation styles are used for Outline styles and the default
format is for bullet points. They go from Outline 1 to Outline 9.

Is this what you mean by parent item 1?

To create another line without creating another bullet (outline)
point, use Shift+Enter when dealing with Presentation styles. The
indent of the line is the same as the bullet point, but there is no
actual bullet point. This is the same as creating a line break

Working with text, you need the Text Formatting toolbar or the

Fixed the issue with text formatting box

By parent bullet point I mean the first bullet point in a list or the
2nd the parent is the one that is directly before an indented bullet
point

sorry I *do not know* the correct terminology for all this.  To me
they are bullet points with some points indented further if they are
related to the one above (hence i was calling the parent bullet point)
in a similar way you have a parent - > child processes on Linux.

I will try the ctrl-enter thing later.

Strange. this option is available on my version of LibreOffice (7.0.3.1

Thesaurus. It should be checked if you want to use LibreOffice's
thesaurus for your language.

A language pack contains spell checking, hyphenation, thesaurus, and
one more thing I have just forgotten. After installation of LO 7.0.1.x
these can be found at libreoffice4/share/extensions/(your language)/.
In my case it is dict-en. This particular folder contains the files for
several English languages, i.e., both UK and US.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Need help applying styles

2020-11-09 Thread Dan Lewis
Have you read the Getting Started with Styles chapter (in the
Getting Started Guide)? There are two important chapters in the Writer
Guide as well.

It looks like your problem is that you use copy (Control+C) and
paste (Control +V). Doing this will paste unwanted styles into the new
document. What you should be using is copy and paste special unformatted
text (Control Shift+Alt+V). Doing this will apply the style that already
exists in the position where you want to paste your text, table,
graphic, etc.

Because this guide consists of copying and pasting some paragraphs from the

inherits a different style than the one that was previously there. To fix
that, I select the pasted text and apply the style I want, for example
"Text Body". The problem is that the style has no effect on the document.
If I double click the style, it simply doesn't get applied to the selected
text. This has happened many times in this document.

I attached the file I'm working on now. On page 18, the first paragraph in
the "Writing derivatives" section is using the style "Definition Term", but
I want to change it to "Body Text". No matter what I do, I cannot apply the
desired style to this paragraph. I tried using 2 different machines and
operating systems, but the problem is still there.

I am using LO 7.0.3. Can anybody help me?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] ToC - formatting problem with styles

I am compiling a book from chapters in the Impress Guide and have come across a
formatting problem with the styles in the Table of Contents.

The Contents 1 style is assigned Liberation Sans 12pt Bold and is set to
display the Title style from a chapter. The resulting ToC has a formatting
error in the Contents 1 style.
The 1st part of the text is correct, that is the chapter number displayed as
Chapter 1.
The 2nd part of this style displays the chapter title, for example Introducing
Impress. The text is formatted as Bold Italic, which is incorrect. It should be
Bold, the same as the chapter number.

Is this a bug in LO Writer or a bug in the template? I do favour a bug in
Writer.

I have come across this problem before when I have included the Heading 3 style
into the ToC. This style is Bold Italic in the chapter, but is set to Regular
in the ToC. However, sometimes the text for this ToC entry comes out partially
italic, for example, Available toolsets or Available toolsets.

Regards
Peter Schofield
psaut...@gmail.com

At first glance, I thought there is either direct formatting or a
character style had been applied. However, I have since noticed another
possibility: the style for Title. It is italic. Seemingly this has been
applied to the Bold style for Content 1. What happens if you remove the
display of the Title style?

Why would you want to include the Heading 3 style in the Toc? I thought
the Toc is suppose to use one of the Contents styles only and no
character styles either.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Question: Direct Formatting documentation?

2020-10-19 Thread Dan Lewis
Using direct formatting is a left over from using a typewriter to create
text. It is much slower than using styles. Furthermore, it makes editing
a very labor intensive task.  Personal example: I was hired by a lady to
format the text in a project of hers.
During our collaboration, she changed her mind as to the font size and
color of one of the headings found on more than 10 pages. Using styles,
I did this by changing one style. The font size and the text color were
changed. That task was done. Had I had to use direct formatting, I would
have to first find every instance of that heading, highlight it, change
the color, and change the font. You tell me which would take the most
time to edit for this one change. So, it would be for every change that
is desire as the text is edited. My conclusion is that direct formatting
is a waste of time.

Using direct formatting has been frowned upon both when writing
documentation and when using Writer since the early 2000's. The above
paragraph is only one of the reasons.

Is there somewhere I can read up on the topic?  My feeling is that
it's under documented. Use of styles is pretty well documented I
believe, but direct formatting is not, I think.

E.g. I only recently discovered that if you turn on italics to
directly format a word, turn off italics, and continue writing,
everything from that point on is still directly formatted.

I think the discussion around
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135871 shows some
of the complexities that can arise, around direct formatting (DF).

I believe the new Styles Inspector will help a lot in the use and
understanding of styles, so perhaps DF is being documented even now?

The paragraph styles for lists with Start, Continue, and End in their

[libreoffice-documentation] List styles and the template

2020-10-09 Thread Dan Lewis

I have a couple of questions about these:

I understand why normally, list styles should not contain more than
three levels, preferably not more than two. However, a plan for creating
a database could use an outline format. The odd levels contains the
questions about the database in secessive more specific ones. The even
levels contains the answers to the odd level questions directly above
it. This is going to take much more than three levels to describe the
desired database in detail. So, any suggestions as to what the
characters should be for the levels below 3 going beyond level 5? (This
information I need for the chapter on planning/designing a database.)

The template contains list styles which we no longer use, the ones
containing, Start, Continue, and End. Is there any reason why these have
not be deleted from the template?

Olivier had mentioned a different time for meetings, on Wednesdays at

Brazilian contributors.

I am also speaking with Olivier about how I can get started with the

As for my subscription to the mailing list, I originally tried to

Is it possible to change the e-mail with which I'll participate in the

First draft of chapter.
So that a history of development is created, I think that the filename should
include a version number with the initials of the creator. For example
IG7006-FormattingGraphicObjects-01-PS.odt. This file would be placed in the
Work in Progress folder.
After first review the filename changes to include the reviewer’s initials,
for example IG7006-FormattingGraphicObjects-01-PS-DB.odt. This file would be
placed in the Work in Progress folder.

Second draft of chapter
Any changes from the reviewer are carried out normally by the creator and the
filename is changed to IG7006-FormattingGraphicObjects-02-PS.odt. This file
would be placed in the Work in Progress folder.
After second review the filename changes to include the reviewer’s initials,
for example IG7006-FormattingGraphicObjects-02-PS-DB.odt. This file would be
placed in the Work in Progress folder.
Files from the first draft of the chapter, that is 01, are place in the Archive
folder.

Published chapter
The filename is changed to IG7006-FormattingGraphicObjects.odt and is place in
the Published folder.
Files from the second draft of the chapter, that is 01, are place in the
Archive folder.
The Archive folder would then contain a history of the development of a chapter
and referred to enough necessary.

I realise that this would mean a change to the Contributors' Guide, Also,
contributors must strictly follow the regime of file naming.

My only recommendation for the proposed 7.x template would be to change

I use Ubuntu 20.04 and 7.0.1.1 (pre-release) from the LibreOffice
website. "Ctrl+`" works just like View > Show Formula. Now there might
be a problem with Ubuntu's release of LibreOffice...

Does  the menu option contain the string "Ctrl+`" in your

"bug" territory again?

Hello Steve,

Thanks for the feedback!

About the shortcut, I"m currently using Linux (Ubuntu), but it could
be a distribution difference. May I suggest something like this:

Formulas can be toggled on / off in the menu option View > Show
Formula, and, depending on the operational system, by the shortcut
Ctrl+` (grave accent).

About the multi-threading, I can understand that this could be useful
information for advanced users.

Yesterday, I uploaded ch 3,4, and 5 to the feedback folder. The
spreadsheet has been updated as well. So on this point, all chapters
have received two reviews. There is only a final review accepting or

Hello Samantha

1st question — not sure why Sidebar is capitalised. Easily changed when I

2nd question — it is a note. Warning header, in my opinion, should not be used
at all. There is no danger to life or serious risk of injury, which is what a
warning is all about. Definition of a warning comes from ISO rules. Also, in my
opinion, caution should not be used. There is no real danger of causing a
malfunction of equipment. In software guides there is only a need for notes and
tips.

While this may be true for Impress, I think that there are cases in Base
in which using a caution makes sense. Data can be lost permanently if
the user does not pay attention to what they are doing. Many of these
thing are mitigated by Base offering to save something.//When creating a
new form, saving it often is very important. This is especially true in
areas where power is not always reliable as where thunderstorms are
relatively common during the hotter part of the year.

Had a quick look at your suggestions and you have made some good points.

Moving figures would create large white spaces in the document. In my opinion,
too much white space in a document is something to be avoided. It looks very
unprofessional. I am of the old school where user guides used to be printed.

did not investigate too deeply the finite formatting details. I do have a few quick
questions, though, and perhaps they are template-related questions:
Why is Sidebar capitalized, but main menu bar and toolbar are not?
Was there a decision made about the Note header on page 2 to be re-styled as a
Warning header?
Overall, I thought the writing was very clear and concise---I was able to

Chapter 3 Adding and Formatting Text for the Impress Guide 7.0 has been

This chapter has been rewritten for two reasons.

1. The changes in Version 7.0 required a rewrite of the old version of the
chapter.

2. The old version of this chapter was very poorly written and probably by
someone who was not experienced in writing software guides. It was confusing
and difficult to follow in some instances. Hopefully I have now corrected that
problem.

One comment I must make is that whoever wrote Version 4.3 of this chapter did
not add their name to the contributors list at the front of the guide. My name
appears there as the last contributor and makes it look like I wrote this
version of Chapter 3. I definitely did not and the text is definitely not my
style or quality.

If anybody writes a chapter or does a review and comment, then PLEASE add your

Another observation about the icons for colibre(SVG). When using

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Contributors' Guide review

2020-08-10 Thread Dan Lewis
I have downloaded this chapter for its second review. I have also
uploaded chapter 4 to the feedback folder. The Guide Status has been
updated.

In chapter 4, I have replace the out of date OOo styles with the ones we
use today. The replaced styles have also been deleted.

I made some changes including what I consider to be a spelling error
(matrixes vs matrices). As I typed this, Thunderbird recognizes matrices
as correct but matrixes as incorrect.

I am having problems understanding the difference between press and
type. The example being: type Y and press Enter. Both of these involve a
single key. In fact, both use my right hand. The only difference in what
I do has to do with which finger I use. It is the same motion.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Contributor Guide Chapter 3: some questions

2020-08-05 Thread Dan Lewis
Don't put yourself down like this. The only reason why I caught this was
that I have been doing this for almost 20 years. Your adding the step
number was something that needed to be done. I have now reviewed three
chapters which you reviewed before me. I quickly noticed just how well
you can spot things, seeming small things, that others would have passed
over. This is the reason why your are a very valuable asset to our
group. I am much stronger in doing the writing; you are much stronger in
finding the little mistakes that we make.

On question #2: You made a very good point on this: the page number has
to be included in the text.

Dan

Hi Dan and Team,

Apologies, but I suppose I'm now out of my depths on this one. The

To Leo's point, I can absolutely see how keeping the page number is
important for hard copy reading.

Then "on page x" does serve a purpose, so this should be kept as is.

The problem part of what you wrote is in where the reader is taken
when
you control + click the a link. Both links will take the reader to
page
7 not page 8. Furthermore, when right clicking either link and then
selecting Edit Field from the context menu, a reference number is
given
among other things. These two links have the same reference
number. The
same thing is true for every sentence containing a link and the
page it
is found on. I really do not see a reason for the second link to
be used
unless it is changed to the actual location rather than to the
heading
above the actual location.

This raises another question. Why was the link to a heading
instead of
where the information is located?

I hope this is the latest script, as some styles have been recently renamed

because of the different zipping algorithm (LO/python).

I placed the "cleaned" files in the Draft folder, in the

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Update on Ubuntu18

2020-07-27 Thread Dan Lewis
I think you may have found a bug. I have both LibreOffice 7.0.0.2 and
6.4.5.2 installed. I have LibreOffice Base 6.4.5.2 in my Dash as a
favorite. Yet, When I bring the cursor over its icon, the popup window
shows LibreOffice 7.0 Base. But when I use Help > About LibreOffice, I
see LibreOffice 6.4.5.2.

There is one other difference that I have. When I install a version of
LibreOffice, I modify the bootstraprc file to rename the folder
containing the configuration files in the home folder
(.../.config/libreoffice/). I replace the 4 on the last line with the
actual number of the LO version. For example, my .../.config/libreoffice
forlder contains these folders: 6.3, 6.4, 7.0. This allows me to run all
three versions at the same time if necessary.

In general, I am following what was proposed by Dan but I have done some
modifications. Some of the chapters are the same - just with a different
name, so you can take screenshots for those chapters. But some chapters are
completely reorganized so please wait until I prepare the first draft of
those chapters. As for the personal edition tag - the decision is not final
yet. If we include it and then it is decided not to include them then it
would confuse the users. It is best that you prepare those screenshots only
that do not have those areas on which Personal edition is written. When the
decision is taken, we can prepare those screenshots which need to contain
those chapters.

I am preparing a document providing a summary of what I am indenting to do
in each chapter. Dan might have thought to include something else in those
chapters, so he can advise me.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: LibreOffice Base 7.0 has not got Firebird engine without experimental mode

Given this, what not update HSQLDB from 1.8 to 2.5? We were using this
version on the daily builds and later the alpha and beta version back in
2005 and 2006. There has to be a way to convert from an embedded
database with version 1.8 to connecting to the database with JDBC with
version 2.5 that is not really difficult. The main problem is with
moving the queries, forms, and reports.

Hi Pulkit,

Yes, this change was made in master and also pushed into the 6.4.4
branch - it was deliberate.

The reason is that the embedded Firebird support code just too much of a
liability at the moment, and virtually no one is fixing the bugs that
its introduction has created, or the bugs for features that one would
expect to see in such an engine, but which haven't been implemented in
the LO code. It was a whole sorry mess, just waiting to explode in the
faces of unwitting users, so it was felt better to switch it back to
experimental, that way, if people hose their data with it, they will
have made the decision knowingly, rather than by default building their
hopes up and then kicking them where it hurts.

At least with embedded hsqldb 1.8.0, we know where all of the problems
lie, and the documentation doesn't need to be rewritten for a new db
engine that doesn't deliver on the promises our marketing communication
was so keen to tout (the engine itself is actually pretty capable, its
just the implementation within LO that is somewhat lacking).

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Macro Code Colorizer

2020-06-05 Thread Dan Lewis
I agree with not having the macro created character styles added to the
template. To me, the template should only contain the styles whether
paragraph or character styles that are need in every chapter created
using the template. When special styles are needed as in the case of
chapters describing macros, they should be added to just that chapter.

I would add a section in the template text content about coloring
example code and point to
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/code-colorizer-formatter
as the proper tool for the job. Let them know that after installing
the extension to open the configuration dialog and change the
paragraph entry from '_OooTextBody' to 'Text Body' (it will not
function until it is changed to an existing paragraph style).

There is no reason to have those character styles in a document that
has no example code, for one thing, and for another maybe the
extension is updated at some point, no reason to add an expectation as
to what those style names must be.

the formatting and colorizing process. (The only note to make here is
that it needs to have the default configuration or _OOoTextBody
changed for the paragraph style - I choose the standard Text Body and
it worked fine)

As for a second extension, 'Code Highlighter 1.6', this python
extension does not run properly in the latest versions of LO so I

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide 6.4: Link to ODT or PDF?

2020-05-07 Thread Dan Lewis
I have some experience in this project. I created epub  versions for
some of the chapters for LO 4.2. I even have a list of things to do
including the things you mentioned that I wrote at the time. I have
already started having converted the Guide ODT file to epub. I have also
merged some of the xhtml files to make this more manageable. And yes,
the list styles need to be checked very carefully: I had to do it before
only in more complex settings. (I worked with three and four levels in
some of these chapters.

Hi Dan

Your'e welcome. I went to this road before and here is the trick: E-pub
is a set of bundled html pages and html don't like tab characters.
Therefore we must ensure to replace tab character by proper spaces. It
happens when you have lists, where the list number or bullet is followed
by a tab character. Fix is to change the list style, but it requires
inspection. Other than that, it looks quite well.

A sample of e-pub is available here

Note: Miklos Vajna from Collabora worked a lot on e-pub in 2018-2019
period. Worth a second look.

Do I understand it the right way? There is a bug, so it doesen't work in
this special version. And now the content should be written without this
feature, because it has been lost by the buggy behaviour?

If I would do this for the whole Base-Handbuch I have a lot to do. There
is more than one feature, which isn't working in LO at this moment, but
described as it has been planned to work.

I would only give a hint: There is a buggy behavior at this moment, but
could be it is working with the version you use...

Regards

Robert

My problem with this bug is that it has been in existence since 2018,
perhaps 2017. It does not work for 6.2.6.1, 6.2.8.2, 6.3.6.2, nor for
6.4.3.2. At least not for the Debian versions. So, possibly it does not
work with Debian versions even for the 5.x.x. It does not work for MacOS
according to Jean.

The thing is that the Mail Merge wizard works fine when a person
does not select a personal salutation. (Again, I have verified this with
several of the versions I mentioned, trying several times in
successions.) At the very least, mention should be made of what versions
of LO are affected as well as giving a simple solution for those who
like myself use a version that are affected.

I know that I got very discussed trying to make it work until the bug
was reported to me. I just do not want anyone else to have to go through
what I did without getting the results they expect.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide ch 7 report and more

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Lewis
I have gone as far as I can go with mail merge. The only problem
that I can not solve is with Step 4 of the mail merge wizard, Create a
salutation. As long as I uncheck the box for a personal salutation, it
works fine. Otherwise I get an two lines when there should only be one:

Dear Mr. x,
Dear Mrs. x,

Hidden paragraphs do not work either. This is for LibreOffice 6.2, 6.3,
and 6.4 (6.4.3.2). There is a bug #118861 that involves this problem. I
wonder if using the Debian version has anything to do with this.

So, I have uploaded the file into the feedback folder with a comment in
that section. The Guide Status file has been updated. Someone else needs
to look through all of the recorded changes I have made to this file.

I have also downloaded chapter 8, Getting Started with Base. I
should finish this by Tuesday evening (2000UTC). I did not find any
place in the Status spreadsheet to place this information.

[libreoffice-documentation] More problems with Mail Merge

2020-04-28 Thread Dan Lewis
I have been able to almost create a mail merge using the query,
Readeraddresses, from the registered database, Media. (The actual
database is Media_without_Macros.).

On the Create a Salutation, I use the field, Salutation, to indicate
which person is a female. Since this field contains Mr. for men and Mrs.
for women, I have placed Mrs. as the Field value. When I click at the
bottom of the Preview window to change documents, I get Dear Mr. for the
men and Dear Mrs. for the women. After adjusting the place where the
salutation should be on with relationship to the Address Block of the
letter, I click Finish.

The salutation that appears in the letter is the following three lines
for the first person who is a male:

Dear Mrs. Lederstrumpf,
Dear Mr. Lederstrumpf,
Dear Sir/Madam,

As I use the Data to Field button to go from one person to the next one,
the Address Block is correct, but the salutation obviously is not. Why
isn't the top two lines exactly the same as the Preview that I had seen
in the Mail Merge Wizard? How do I get it to show what I need:

Dear , where salutation is either Mr. or Mrs.
depending upon value in the Salutation field?

I am not sure that it is in the translation. Here is why:

Google's translation:

The field names "first name", "last name" and "birthday" should be
clear. In addition, a field with the name "ID" was entered. This field
will later hold a value that is the unique property of each record. Such
a unique key field is necessary for the embedded database. Otherwise, no
data records can be entered in the table. This key field is referred to
as “primary key” in databases.

However, this paragraph needs to be rewritten to make it more
meaningful. As Robert has pointed out, tables can be created in the Base
GUI. Data can be added to such a table using Tools > SQL. My question to
Robert is this: How can a table without a primary key be accessed in
terms of forms, and reports? I know queries can be created with Tools >
SQL.

[libreoffice-documentation] Data to Field problem

2020-04-17 Thread Dan Lewis
When Data Sources is open and a database file is selected, both Data to
Text or Data to Field buttons are active. However, when I click Data to
Field, no dialog opens. When I click Data to Text, the dialog opens with
a choice of Table, Field, or Text. Is there really a reason for the Data
to Field button at all? Should any reference to it be removed in the
documentation? Or, is what I see not happening just a problem with the
Linux versions?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Exporting data: how is it done

2020-03-25 Thread Dan Lewis

Actually, I can answer my own question is these steps:

1. Export the script file from an embedded database.

2. Open LibreOffice in which the Class Path contains the path to the
hsqldb.jar file for version 2.50.

3. Connect to an empty database supplying the pertinent information.

4.Using Tools > SQL, Copy and paste the contents of the script file as
described below. This external database now contains all of the tables,
views, and data that the embedded database has. There are no queries,
forms, nor reports.

5. Create a copy of the embedded database.

6. In the main database window of the external database, open the copy
of the embedded database. Since the LibreOffice doing this is using
HSQLDB 2.50, this action will remove all of the tables, views, and data
from the embedded database. It however contains all of the queries,
forms, and reports.

7. Since the external database and the embedded one are both using
HSQLDB 2.50, clicking on an individual query, form, or report and drag
and drop it from the main database window of one to the other.

The result is an external database with all of the tables, views, data,
queries, forms, and reports that are part of the embedded database.
There is a problem that has to be corrected in the forms: the form
property for each form and subform. The Content property has to be
modified to point to the correct the name of the table or query.

database and place the copy in another folder. Then I exported the
script file from one of them. I use LibreOffice 6.3 to open the second
file. In this version, I have altered the Advance property under Tools

had a database with all of the queries, forms, and reports, all the
things I was missing in the database created with the script file. So,
this is when I use it to create the tables, views, and the data. Is
this a fairly simple way to take an embedded database using hsqldb 1.8

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Extension Manager function for Impress

Templates are .OTP files; extensions are .OXT files. With
LibreOffice open, Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Paths. The right side
of this page shows the paths to various parts of LibreOffice, Templates
is one of them.

Download the templates you want for Impress. Place them in the
template folder that is listed in the path for this purpose. Restart
LIbreOffice. They should show up in the Impress templates.

Actually, you could create a folder for these templates. Place them
in that folder. Left click Templates in the list of paths which should
highlight this line. Click the button Edit in the bottom right. Click
"Add" and browse to the folder you have created. Close and reopen

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Embedded Links 4 Click Through

2020-03-24 Thread Dan Lewis
This can be done for eBook documents, and this requires the use of
either Sigil or calibre by someone who knows what they are doing. It
does take some time to do this. Both of these automatically make a table
of content that links to the content. The rest of the links like those
to figures have to be entered individually. A chapter may take 2 or 3
days to do this.

Dan

I have used both of these programs to produce ePub files.

Hello, team.

It seems in the other word processing methods for publishing that you can
embed a link to click through fairly easily. I was curious as to if we have
coded this idea using the NextCloud publishing format as it seems that the
links throughout all of the documents & chapters do not click through at
this time, but are just listed as a link. Usually, you list the link in the
text & then you sort of dig it deeper into the code with a second reference
string push on top of that one.

For the digital publishing world, I would think reading the
reference manual as an eBook would like an easy one click click through
would function? Any ideas or notes on this one for digital publishing?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: LibreOffice Base Documentation

2020-03-13 Thread Dan Lewis
I have uploaded BG6208 to the Feedback folder. I left a comment on pg 26
where the instructions listed made it impossible for me to duplicate. A
rewrite seems to be needed to made with more detailed instructions.

At the bottom or pg 26, daylight savings time was mentioned with a query
that involves it. Since this begins between March 8 and 16 and then ends
between Nov 1 and 7, I am not sure that the query is accurate. Such a
query would be complex since the time period begins on the second Sunday
of March to end on the first Sunday of Nov.

I have downloaded BG6210-Database_Maintenance for review #1. Given the
size of the file, this should not take as long as I anticipated when I
updated the spreadsheet.

First review completed and uploaded to the Feedback folder. I have
downloaded BH6208 Database Tasks for its first review. The spreadsheet
has been updated for both of these including when I expect to finish the
latter chapter. (I am becoming more acquainted with what needs to be
placed where in the spreadsheet including the date format used.)

As we both remember some time ago, Base Handbook is only the
translation of Base Handbuch from German. Having just looking at the
German website for LibreOffice, I selected the Documentation section.
What we call guides, they call Handbücher which is the plural of Handbuch.

So, it makes total sense to me to change Base Handbook to Base Guide. It

[libreoffice-documentation] Organizing Base Handbook

2020-02-10 Thread Dan Lewis
Yes, Pulkit, I would like very much to collaborate with you on
getting version 6.2 published. I have some suggestions on doing that.

In the Preface chapter text, I changed the mentioning of the Galaxy
icons to Colibre icons. The team decided to change that to Colibre last
year. I only mention this in case you are not presently using Colibre icons.

I also noticed in chapter 1 that some of the screenshots had
headings at the top of them in German. I don't know why, but new
screenshots are needed. I have left a note at each screenshot that I
think needs to be redone. Rob has promised to do this for us.

And to Rob: make sure when you are finished with the screenshots and
return it to the Feedback folder that you update the work spreadsheet in
the Replace screenshot column with the date returned. Also make sure you
use the Windows O/S to do this.

Back to Pulkit: I would like for you to continue translating the rest of
the chapters after which I will review them. Just make sure to let the
team on this mailing list when you upload any file in the Base Handbook
folders.

When version 6.2 is completed, it will be time to first consider the
updating it to version 6.4 which should not take much time to do.

As I side issue, Pulkit, have I missed an email to the list from you in
which you introduced yourself to us? If you have not done so, please do
so we all know what talents that you possess.

Don't know if this is ironically: 13 bugs have been solved in Base and
this is written down for a Release note - but 539 bugs are open.

Where is the littel change you are writing about? Couldn't be the
"Firebird Migration Assistant", which has appeard in the first LO 6.3 as
not experimental but was so experimental that it disappeard a little bit

I was speaking in general knowing that Base does not get very much
attention by the developers. I had not checked closely on specific
things that might have changed. So, if I understand you, there is
nothing new to be added to LO 6.2 to make it 6.4.

Last weekend I filed a bug about the Firebird direct connector. (130334
) There
seems to be a problem with tables with primary keys containing 3 fields.
Employee.fdb contains two tables with this property (JOB, PROJ_DEPT_BUDGET).

I have run into a problem with connecting to firebird using either Java
or ODBC. The error message involves connecting to localhost in both
cases. Perhaps it is my firewall that is doing this.

Who is PK? When I did my uploading, I noticed several chapters of the

think that it would be nice for the two of us to collaborate to get this
Guide finished.
