Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-24 Thread Marc Paré
Hi all,

Just to add, in my trying to convince local libraries to purchase sets
of guides for LibreOffice, I am often asked if there is a whole set that
they can purchase. The answer thus far from me has been no. Having a
full 7.2 would greatly help in promoting the guides as complete sets to
libraries. I know that is quite challenging, but, most helpful for the
marketing of LibreOffice docs if a full set is available.

Thanks to all of you for your monumental work on getting these guides
out in such order. Truly amazing!

Cheers,

Marc

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-23 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello Team,

Many thanks for the offers of help with updating the Base Guide to LO 7.2.

I have created the folder structure in NextCloud, included a tracking
spreadsheet, applied the LO 7 template to all ODT files, and placed
those files in the Work in Progress folder. I have also checked out
BG7200 Preface to update it. Meanwhile Jean is proposing some updates to
Chapter 7 and so others would be better avoiding that chapter for the
moment.

The task could take a long time if one person updates all chapters, and
it would be helpful if others could select chapters for which they can
perform the update. Since the software hasn’t changed much since the 6.4
Base Guide was published, this shouldn’t be more complicated than your
normal review activities (e.g. does the software accurately describe
what Base does; does the text make sense; etc). Please consider doing
some updates!

One systematic problem I have noticed is that the figures need some work
throughout the document. Some appear to have been edited with photo
editing software and many don’t have captions. I will regenerate a
complete set of figures for the document and insert them into the
chapters later – doing it that way will ensure a consistent appearance.
However, please could those updating chapters add captions where they
are missing.

I will review all updates and comments, as I have when updating the Calc
Guide.

Good luck to all!

Regards,

Steve

I do not claim to be particularly knowledgeable about Base, but I can

I expect the update to be mostly cosmetic because the various release

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Robert Großkopf
Hi Jean, hi Steve,

> Can we identify portions of the German book about Firebird that could

> different now?

Have a look at the chapter "Tabellen"→"Direkte Eingabe von SQL-Befehlen"
of "Base Handbuch 7.2"
(https://de.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/). I have integrated
the difference of HSQLDB and Firebird for every SQL-code written there.
I marked all with green colored "HSQLDB", which will work with HSQLDB
and all with green colored "FIREBIRD", which will work in Firebird. Also
the parts, which won't work, were marked red colored and cancelled.

There is another chapter "Abfragen"→"Abfrageerweiterungen im SQL-Modus"
which will show many of this differences between HSQLDB and Firebird..

The English guide will ha a chapter "Appendix B", which won't appear
here. It has been integrated by me in "Appendix A". There is the same
structure for Functions and data types. I marked it the same with
"HSQLDB" and "Firebird".

I haven't removed much content to the Base Handbuch. I only added new
content. So the structure of the Base Handbuch will be the same as the
structure of the Base Guide. One new chapter I have seen directly was
the chapter about SQLite - 1 page - in chapter "Datenbanken erstellen".
There are many more chapters like the chapter about charts in forms or
gridcontrols in dialogs. But all this isn't essential for showing the
difference between Firebird and HSQLDB.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Jean Weber
I have now checked Chapter 7 of the Base Guide, which covers (among
other things) the Mail Merge function, which uses Writer. There have
been some changes: relatively minor, involving a few of the Mail Merge
dialogs and including at least one extra function. I can update these
in the BG chapter using material from the WG chapter. Someone else
(perhaps you) will need to do the part of BG Ch7 on Calc.

I also think there may have been a minor issue with one of the sample
databases, but I will have to check on that and get back to you.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Jean Weber
Robert,
Can we identify portions of the German book about Firebird that could
be translated and go into the English version? Or are the books too
different now?

Steve, FYI the English Base Guide started out as a translation of the
German Base Handbuch; it has been revised and portions rewritten since
then. But once or twice, several years ago, new or changed parts of
the German book were inserted into the English book, translated (by
various people, plus Google), and edited (often by me). I think it
worked well. But if the books have diverged too much, this may not be
practical.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Robert,

Thanks for that and apologies for my daft questions (I'm not always
aware of the history of the project).

I'll give some more thought to improving this area in the (English) Base
Guide, although I probably won't be able to do much during this
iteration. I do, however, believe passionately that we should not be
using the guides to highlight implementation problems, bugs, and
instability!

Translating German materials doesn't sound a great idea for me - it
would be too big a step for my schoolboy German (even with the help of
Google Translate).

Based on what you've read in the German "Base Handbuch", are there any
particular areas that we might be able to improve in the Base Guide by
extracting information from the Firebird 3.0 documentation
(https://firebirdsql.org/en/reference-manuals/)?

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

In my experience so far working within the Documentation Team, we don't
tend to describe experimental features within the guides. Therefore,
given its current status, would I be better off removing discussion of
the internal Firebird engine from the 7.2 Base Guide?

This would avoid references to a "large number of bugs", "instability"
and warnings to "be extremely careful here". These don't read well when
trying to convince users that LO is a quality product.

The material could easily be re-instated later, if and when Firebird is
promoted from experimental to operational.

Any opinions please?

Steve

I have finished formatting Chapter 9, Macros. I corrected many small
typos and other errors but did not record those.
I did record a bigger change to the info on customizing a toolbar in
the "Securing your database" section (p. 64), which had an out of date
image of the Customize dialog.
I also left several questions about things I did not understand.
The file is in the Feedback folder for BG6.2.

I will work on Chapter 7 now.

So give a hint for the buggy behavior. In the Handbuch there are tables
called HINWEIS. I would prefer to write down the buggy behavior there.

For example another buggy behavior, which appeared and disappeared in
LO-Versions (and in AOO): Report-Builder could show charts, but there
have been versions, where no charts could be shown. So I have written a
special chapter for error sources in Report Builder. But the chapter for
charts has been there the whole time.

Hi Dan,

After reading Jean's email about the bug that exists on step 3 of the
Mail Merge wizard, I have decided that that part of chapter 7 needs to
be rewritten which I have done today. I am uploading it to the feedback
folder for your consideration. Now I will get back to work on GS6408.

Do I understand it the right way? There is a bug, so it doesen't work in
this special version. And now the content should be written without this
feature, because it has been lost by the buggy behaviour?

If I would do this for the whole Base-Handbuch I have a lot to do. There
is more than one feature, which isn't working in LO at this moment, but
described as it has been planned to work.

I would only give a hint: There is a buggy behavior at this moment, but
could be it is working with the version you use...

Regards

Robert

My problem with this bug is that it has been in existence since 2018,
perhaps 2017. It does not work for 6.2.6.1, 6.2.8.2, 6.3.6.2, nor for
6.4.3.2. At least not for the Debian versions. So, possibly it does not
work with Debian versions even for the 5.x.x. It does not work for MacOS
according to Jean.

The thing is that the Mail Merge wizard works fine when a person
does not select a personal salutation. (Again, I have verified this with
several of the versions I mentioned, trying several times in
successions.) At the very least, mention should be made of what versions
of LO are affected as well as giving a simple solution for those who
like myself use a version that are affected.

I know that I got very discussed trying to make it work until the bug
was reported to me. I just do not want anyone else to have to go through
what I did without getting the results they expect.

If you are planning to write an edition for LO 6.4.*: I would give a

Do I understand it the right way? There is a bug, so it doesen't work in
this special version. And now the content should be written without this
feature, because it has been lost by the buggy behaviour?

If I would do this for the whole Base-Handbuch I have a lot to do. There
is more than one feature, which isn't working in LO at this moment, but
described as it has been planned to work.

I would only give a hint: There is a buggy behavior at this moment, but
could be it is working with the version you use...

be rewritten which I have done today. I am uploading it to the feedback

The 2nd review of macros chapter has been done by jean-Pierre Ledure. Jean

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

Hi Pulkit,

I have just uploaded a new section about Access2Base in a file named
BG6209-Macros_JPL_20200430.odt (Draft directory of the 6.2 Base Handbook).

It would probably benefit from a rapid review by a native english writer.

I started from the updates made by AHR (Alain Romedenne).

I never used before the template and the proposed styles. So, adapting
them to whatever is newer (Jean Webber ?) should improve the result.

A reviewer with windows system and a good knowledge of Base Macros is
needed for review of access2base documentation in base guide. I have not
written this portion yet but I want to make sure there is a reviewer who
can add the screenshots as well. I will copy most of the info from A2B
website as I do not have a windows system to test new documentation on.

Drew: After a discussion with Oliver, I have started this work. I know that
you were doiing this work but you are taking too much time and I wanted the

I am not sure that it is in the translation. Here is why:

Google's translation:

The field names "first name", "last name" and "birthday" should be
clear. In addition, a field with the name "ID" was entered. This field
will later hold a value that is the unique property of each record. Such
a unique key field is necessary for the embedded database. Otherwise, no
data records can be entered in the table. This key field is referred to
as “primary key” in databases.

However, this paragraph needs to be rewritten to make it more
meaningful. As Robert has pointed out, tables can be created in the Base
GUI. Data can be added to such a table using Tools > SQL. My question to
Robert is this: How can a table without a primary key be accessed in
terms of forms, and reports? I know queries can be created with Tools >
SQL.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide Quality and images

2020-04-19 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hello Peter and Rob,
I thought about Peter when I first read Rob's message. Perhaps, if Rob does
the first review of the chapters of the base guide 6.4 then Peter can take
them for their second review and make sure good English is used. That way
both tasks would be fulfilled- database errors would be removed and English
would become good. As for figures I agree with Jean. We should do all this
in the v6.4 not v6.2. We should let v6.2 be published because Base Guide
has not been updated since v4.0 I think. I have already prepared the drafts
of first 6 chapters of v6.4. If Rob can take it for its first review it
would be great. I think Peter, you are busy with Draw guide. Can you manage
the two at once? As for time I think we have much for v6.4. v7.0 is going
to be released in August, so if we complete v6.4 by end of July, and it
would have no or only little mistakes, then I think it wouldn't take more
than a month to update it to v7.0. It depends how base changes in going to
v7.0.

For several years, we've been trying to find people who have the
knowledge, the time, and the English skills to review and improve the

ID was added. This field will later take a value which is unique for
each record. A unique key field is necessary for the embedded database.
Otherwise, no records can be entered in the table. This key field is

The sentence "A unique key field is necessary for the embedded database"
is imho not correct. a table has an unique key (primary key), not
databases.

The database HSQLDB requires this primary key for every tabe - if you
will work with the table in GUI.

You are correct Robert, but the text is saying that a primary key is
attached to a database (at least that is how I'm reading it) , but a
primary key is attached to a table!

Also the primary key is used on tables in all sorts of
databases. It is not only valid for Embedded databases.

This is wrong. Have a look at DBase, MySQL or, very simple, have a look
at HSQLDB without using the GUI. You could create tables in this
database without using a primary key and you could also add values to
this tables. The wizard works with this feature.

The text is: "A unique key field is necessary for the embedded database"
You can better add to the text that Base requires a primary key for
tables in embedded databases...

Suppose someone without database knowledge reads this text and he or she
will think that external databases do not use primary keys at all,
because in the text the emphasis is on Embedded databases.

There for you have to mention that in general database usage a primary
key can be used (is advised) but not necessary

BTW. Thank you for writing the guide(s), great job, I'm a fan!! I got a
lot information out of it and also from the early versions like
importing info from PDF files for example I'm planning to translate
those samples as well, because it shows us what is possible with Base
with some little programming!

Thanks!

And now the example:

Create a table in the internal HSQLDB.
Fields: "forename" and "surname" - both VARCHAR(50)
Save this table with name "table_without_pk", ignore the warning for PK
Go to Tools > SQL
INSERT INTO "table_without_pk" ("forename","surname") VALUES
('Robert','Großkopf')
... and press "Execute" (don't know the name for the button haven't time
to switch to English ...)
One row has been added.

Don't think I haven't written all this content for the Base-Handbuch and
haven't tested. If you think so put it away and write your own.

Hi Pulkit,

Maybe I used the wrong words... By index I mean "Table of contents" at

If you need to update the table of Contents you choose command "Update

[libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2020-04-18 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hello Everybody,

Base Guide 6.4:-
I have uploaded the first drafts of chapter 3,4 and 5 to the drafts folder.
There are no main changes in these chapters. Just few small changes. Anyone
is welcome to take these chapters including chapter 0-2 for their first
review.

Base Guide 6.2:-
I got an email from Dan via the list asking for some info on a topic in DB
connections. Robert had already responded to it and his answer is correct
so I did no replied. So, I think Dan would complete the review of chapter 7
soon. I have not got any message from Drew for his progress on macros
chapter. We have to wait for him.

Which version did you translate? The direct connetion to PostgreSQL is
part of the Base-Handbuch since LO 4.1.

The only part, which has been changed sind LO 6.2 (Last version I
uploded to de.libreoffice.org) and LO 6.4, is part of the Report
Builder. There could be added the possibility to auto-grow fields.

Hello Jean,
Do we need a column called "Has Style been updated?" in Base Guide 6.4
tracking spreadsheet? I mean the I am updating Base Guide from its v6.2.
You yourself updated the styles of all the chapters except macros of that
version. So do we need that column?

Hello Everybody,
While we are waiting for Drew and Dan to complete their reviews on BG6.2, I
have start updating the completed chapters for v6.4. I have uploaded the
drafts of Preface, Chapter 1, and chapter 2 of Base Guide 6.4. Anyone can
take them for their first review. There are not much changes in Preface and
Chapter 1 but in chapter 2, i have added two new sections:-
1) Connecting to PostgreSQL Directly
2) I have added the steps to connect to external HSQLDB in chapter 2 from
Appendix A. I think they are more appropriate in chapter 2 than in Appendix
A.

Jean:-
You should not take the chapters for their first review. You can take them
for their second review to ensure that they have the required formatting. I
am saying this because,

Hello Everybody,
Base Guide Appendix B has been published. Its second review was done by
Randolph Gamo. Now only 2 chapters are left- Macros(which is taken for its
first review by Drew. I think Jean can take it for its second review to
make sure the formatting are correct) and DB connections(which is taken for
its second review by Dan). Both Dand and Drew are taking much time but as
Oliver said in meeting, we cannot pose deadline on volunteers.

[libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide and LibreOffice Tutorials

2020-04-13 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hello Everybody,

Base Guide:-

Randolph has done the second review of the appendix A of Base Guide. I have
placed it in the published folder. 3 chapters are now left fo 1 each
review. Drew has taken macros. Dan has taken DB Connections and Randolph
has taken Appendix B. This means that the base guide is to be published
soon enough. After that I will start to work on Base Guide 6.4.

@randolph gamoI have added your name to the
contributors list in appendix A. You could have done that yourself too.

LibreOffice Tutorial:-
The first 4 chapters(including preface) of the LibreOffice Tutorials have
been published. I have written them and Bernard has reviewed them. I am
working on chapter 4. There were only 10 chapters in the original Essential
Tutorial by Bernard Poole, but I, with help of Bernard am planning to
include a 11th chapter that will be based on Math. Bernard is writing it
and I will give it the formatting of a typical libreoffice guide.
