Mine had the sticky paint. I found a NOS replacement on ebay. If you
have time, just keep looking for the newer one.

Garey is absolutely right, I never thought the type light made that much
difference until recently when the XYL and I bought some new furniture and in
the showroom under fluorescent lights our sofa/recliners appeared brown but

The color temperature of the light has a LOT to do with the 'color' that
you see. Especially now with CFLs that come in multiple variations of
'white'. The 'Daylight' or 6500 degree Kelvin
CFLs are great for natural color for photography. PLUS they are a LOT
cooler than the old 500W photofl
They all look black to me, Curt. But then, I confuse socks too, hi.

It is probably me (wife will testify regarding my sock selection) but I
would swear my TR7 sticky paint is a shade of muddy brown. Especially
when placed beside something black. Seems same as the newer RV7 and MN7

paint or a textured gray vinyl finish. The later replacement cabinets were
black since that was what they used for some of their satellite equipment

Interesting. I have two replacement cabinets, and both are just painted
black. I do know that many of the accessory cabinets I have are the
very dark gray (kinda like St. James gray, more black than gray) and are
of the vinyl clad material. I think that same material was used on some
The color of the TR7 case both sticky paint and vinyl clad was dark
gray. Some time after the production of ham radios was stopped,
Drake made replacement cases for the 7 line that were black vinyl clad.

Not really. Originals were a black with a brownish cast to it, but
unfortunately didn't hold up very well. There have been a few
'procedures' for repairing the paint, with 'some' success. They later
went to another paint (non-sticky) which was more black than anything else.

Probably will decrease the desirability somewhat. They are not black
but a dark brown.
There is a well documented approach to renewing the sticky paint. Using
a treatment with oven cleaner and a silicone sealant like amorall.
