Those days are irrelevant to the subject at hand and it has nothing to do with instant gratification. [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up
Perhaps this is a fluke, but if not, something is seriously wrong with the system. I'm looking at the lotw stats at http://www.arrl.org/logbook-queue-status 2012-12-14 11:02:10 28,382 8,932,232 3,874,028,579 2012-12-04 16:13:53 (9d 18h 48m 17s ago) 2012-12-14 10:02:27 28,370 8,960,484 3,884,882,489 2012-12-04 15:58:15 (9d 18h 04m 12s ago) Note that the number of QSOs to be processed dropped by ~28000 and the data to be processed dropped by about 10 Meg. The backlog increased by 44 minutes. Hmm... Barry W2UP --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. As a former big gun in a good location, now a little pistol in a bad location, I can say I find the current state of DXing very discouraging. The instant bedlam generated by the Cluster and skimmer networks makes it very difficult for the little guys. The other big factor is the need for so many to work every band-mode combination. While I can understand wanting a QWSO on each band and mode, is EVERY combination necessary? For example, if you worked them on 20 SSB, 40 CW, and 15 RTTY, do you also feel obligated to fill in the 20 CW and 20 RTTY slots, too? If so, why? Re: [DX-CHAT] Leaderboards - good or bad?
I disagree. The last day of the Yemen DXpediition was the first day I heard them well here in Colorado. There were still lots of callers. Fortunately, I didn't need it, so I never got into the pileups. ARRL created this mess when they expanded DXCC to include individual band awards. There are plenty of little guns and those who don't live in propagationally-favorable locations left out in the cold on many DXpeditions because many guys have the need and are sufficiently bored with their lives to chase them on 15+ band-modes. Google Roman Vega and there's a bunch of info. For example: One of the first individuals to create a sustainable business model based on cybercrime was a certain Roman Vega of Ukraine, a.k.a. Re: [DX-CHAT] If a country sinks beneath the sea, is it still a country?
Since we have one current country that was never above the sea (BS7), the answer is yes. That is a question about which the Republic of the Marshall Islands — a Micronesian nation of 29 low-lying coral atolls — is now seeking expert legal advice. It is also a question the United States Senate might ask itself the next time it refuses to deal with climate change. According to the world’s leading scientists, sea-level rise is one of the greatest dangers of global warming, threatening not only islands but coastal cities like New Orleans and even entire countries like Bangladesh. In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change conservatively predicted a 20-inch sea-level rise by the end of this century if current trends were not reversed. Because of various uncertainties, its calculations excluded the melting of the Greenland and West Antarctica ice sheets. Some academic studies have suggested that rises of four to seven feet are not out of the question. Officials in the Marshall Islands — where a 20-inch rise would drown at least one atoll — are not only thinking about the possibility of having to move entire populations but are entertaining even more existential questions: If its people have to abandon the islands, what citizenship can they claim? [DX-CHAT] Follow-up on Via France post
I know someone whose son is a supr. with USPS. I posed the question to him about writing routing info like Via France or Via Japan on an envelope and whether it makes any difference. Here's what he said, FWIW: My son went with this to Washington. Apparently, there is a large book called the International Mail Manual. According to whomever Dave talked to, there is NO way that the public can request or demand the route that something is to be shipped internationally. In other words, it is at the discretion of the postal system as to how it gets wherever it is going. I read that as if it was leaving say Washington, D.C.---it could fly out from there and go one route. But, if leaving say California, it might go another route. However the particular regional distribution center has it set up. For example---our mail goes by truck to Baltimore---and then out from there. [DX-CHAT] SL mamangers around the world in countries with reliable mail service willing to help
I sent a card to YU7GMN via buro in 2003 with no reply. I've never sent a card to V51AS despite 20+ QSOs because he is a well-known QSL deadbeat. I don't buy his bad mail service excuse. It appears he's a graduate of the FR5DX School of QSLing - send just enough cards so people will keep trying, sending more green stamps each time. If the mail service is, in fact, the problem, there are plenty of volunteer QSL managers around the world, in countries with reliable mail service, willing to help. One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to know that's the way to go if the mail service is really the problem. There are DXpeditions of V5 every now and then. Wait for one of those. 73, Barry W2UP DAVE WHITE wrote: Hi Jerry, I never tried YU7GWN, but have received several QSLs from V51AS. V51AS is a good QSLer.when he receives mail, so please don't blame him. Unfortunately, as with much of Africa since the colonial powers left, countries descended into chaos, corruption and theft (go to Nigeria, it's a way of life there!). We see this in the mail theft that routinely happens with mail to V51AS. Sadly this has happened across the whole continent - they're not all as bad as Zimbabwe, but plenty are nearly there. Remember, $2 is often a weekly or monthly wage in Africa and Western aid $$$ end up in the current dictator's Swiss bank account. If I can give any tips (they're old, well-known ones), it's (1) Don't write callsigns or amateur radio etc on the envelope (2) fold your green stamps inside your return envelope and make sure that this in turn is folded so that the contents aren't visible even if the corners of your envelope are lifted. Insert it opening down. (3) If you've not got a dark coloured QSL card, shove some carbon paper in there, so the contents aren't visible if it's held to the light (4) try to fold the return envelope so it doesn't look like a return envelope - this is a dead giveaway. Following these, I have a pretty decent return rate from V51AS I'd be surprised if there are such mail problems in Serbia, but YU7GMN is a club station, so mail probably sits there for a while. They're probably more interested in operating/antenna projects etc. Do you know which op you worked? You could probably try him??? Whilst we're on the subject, has anyone received QSLs from XE1KK? Re: [DX-CHAT] QSL mamangers around the world in countries with reliable mail service willing to help
I have a feeling it goes via France, anyway. Since Reunion is a French possession, why would it go any other way? The mail travels via airplane and Air France has most of the flights in and out of there. I wonder if the via instructions are simply ignored as irrelevant. Kinda like sending something via Fedex Express. Whether it's going to a neighboring state or across the country, it still goes via Memphis. OTOH, I wonder if routing instructions on an envelope to an independent country, such as JT , makes a difference. [DX-CHAT] Who to contact for corporate sponsorship?
In the past, myself and Ilya, KE7OPG, participated in the IARU HST (High Speed Telegraphy) competition. Some of you may remember my presentation at the Dayton Contest Forum a few years ago and article I wrote for QST. I was recently contacted by a young ham (age 13), Cal, K0DXC, who has been licensed for 3 years and is in the 45-50 WPM range already! He expressed an interest in participating in the next HST, which is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 2009 in Bulgaria. All the participants, with the exception of the US hams, have been sponsored by their national societies, including transportation, room and board, and entry fees. ARRL, while submitting the application for the US team to participate, does not cover any expenses. Cal, because of his age, would need to travel with a family member, and there are the other US participants who wouldn't mind some financial assistance either. As various radio manufacturers, clubs, foundations, etc. sponsor DXpeditions, I wonder if anyone has any thoughts, or contacts, to arrange sponsors for the HST competition? The fact that it was the most effcient mode and comes in handy every time. Those students people always made it about nostalgia or personal. So now that you have a keyboard and interface CW all of a sudden is the mode used mostly for many? Gee! I wonder why. 73! At least if they are, he should patent his secret and sell it. On a serious point, I felt that it was always the older members of the hobby who wished to preserve cw as an entry criterion for the HF bands - something which I always considered to be ridiculous (no, I'm NOT trying to re-open the code/no-code debate). Interestingly, I always said that there was no way I'd ever mess about operating cw, and only did the test to get my ticket. The mode held no interest for me at all. But then one day I bought an all-mode TNC at a hamfest - actually to send/receive RTTY - so I hooked it up to my computer and started to use it. Incidentally it also worked for cw, so it rather got me into using the mode on the bands just out of interest. Strangely, I look at my log book these days and I'd say that cw is the mode that I use the most. As you imply, it's probably an age thing. I still send from the keyboard, though use Human Brain Mark #1 for decoding. More grey hairs - of which I now have many - means more cw operating, perhaps? I shall practice sitting on my porch, barking at passers-by and waving my stick at passing traffic in between sending with a bug key. Will I then be a fully-fledged, 100 percent cw op? .. cheers Dave G0OIL */David Rollitt [EMAIL PROTECTED]/* wrote: HI, I recently made a few QSO's during the All Asia CW test, the exchange in the AA Test is RS(T) and Age for OM's. Re: [DX-CHAT] FJ Can of worms
Question 1. Why did Martti not use his own call? Question 2. Is there just a thing as a written license for CEPT. If you go to Canada, you don't get a written license to operate VE3/W3WN. Question 3. So where are all the native FJ ops? Not on the air. Barry W2UP Ron Notarius W3WN wrote: A very interesting document. I noticed that one item appeared to be missing... when the first complaints surfaced, one of the charges was that of possibly illegal entry to FJ via a privately chartered boat, as I recall. No mention of that in the letter. As a certain fictional television character used to say, Fascinating. The charge over the alleged misuse of the club callsign for the DXpedition is probably the most serious complaint. But as meticulous as Martti usually is on planning his jaunts, I find it hard to believe that this detail was overlooked. And, of course, nobody's perfect, so it may have been a true oversight on his part. But... was a license issued, and if so, what call was on it? If FJ/OH2AM was on the license -- does that make the operation invalid? I'm sure that's one of the things the DXAC and DXCC desk will get to iron out, a task I don't envy them. Having said that... I've got to tell you, gang, that this is one of a string of disturbing precedents that we've seen over the last few years. Sort of a DX'ing version of NIMBY. Recall all the complaints from the HP hams over the H8A trip a few years back, for one (specifically over the actual call on the license)? And there have been others along the same lines, which many of you know much more about than I ever will. I can't blame some of the resident FJ hams from feeling that their triumph got trumped, that their own plans to inaugurate the new entity in their own way got pulled out from under them. Under similar circumstances, I might feel the same way. Re: [DX-CHAT] Making a List Checking It Twice...
You need to think about it and decide why to send them in at all. In almost 40 years, I've only sent in for Mixed and RTTY. All the band-mode stuff I just track for my own satisfaction in DX4WIN. I don't need any more wallpaper. I don't even bother sending for QSLs for the band-mode stuff - only if it's a brand new one (which there aren't any unless you count FJ) or a new RTTY country (3 or so.) Barry W2UP Ron Notarius W3WN wrote: As I've mentioned from time to time, being the master procrastinator that I am, I never did get around to sending in anything towards DXCC. Well, I finally decided enough is enough is enough, and I will be visiting with the local DXCC card checker before the end of the year to finally get off my keister and get it done. Only question is... which set of cards to send? I'd hoped to have my 30 M DXCC completed by now, so that I could send in Mixed, CW, 30 all at the same time with the same cards. Alas, unless the postal carrier is kind to me today, I'm going to fall about 4 cards shy, so that's out. Regardless, I can send in a set of cards for Mixed, either CW or SSB, or any single band 80/40/20/15/10. I might have single mode on one band, but I haven't filtered the database that tightly yet; if I do, that will probably be the candidate to get a 3 for 1 submission. But, assuming that I don't... would you send in for a single mode (which one?) or a single band (which one?)? Re: [DX-CHAT] Power cycling the ACOM-1000
Interesting question. Personally, I only turn the amp and xcvr on when I use them and turn them off when I'm done. I posed this question to Krassy at Acom a few years ago (I have a 2000A) and he recommended turning it off if it will sit idle for more than 30 minutes. OTOH, my computer is left on from the time I get home from work until bedtime. Barry W2UP Ragnar Otterstad wrote: I have been turning everything on in the morning and then turning it off around midnight. In terms of wear and tear on the ACOM-1000, as well as the life of the tube, would it be better to turn it off for the 2-3 hour periods when it is being used, or to leave it on all day as I have been doing? I know the off/on cycle stresses components, especially tubes, but so does leaving a piece of equipment running 15-16 hours a day. - It has always been my understanding, that it is less wear if it is turned all day rather than switching on and off several times. The lifetime for the tubes is definately supposed to be longer. The other side of the coin is of course the rising cost of energy and what our excesses are doing to the environment. 73 RAG Ragnar Otterstad LA5HE JW5HE OZ8RO Located in Telemark - Home of skiing. FR5DX is a sly dog. He sends just enough QSLs to entice the DXer to try and try again, using the mail loss or theft excuse. He's had many volunteers over the years offer to manage his cards, all turned down. Also, unlike some third world countries, FR is a department (similar to a state or county) of France, and uses the same postal system used in Paris or Marseilles. IMO, he's an unethical profiteer. If you use this address and include appropriate IRCs or GS, you should get a card with no problems. I got cards from Herik for both 80m and 160m using the above and he also helped me get a card from FR7BP/T (now SK) for an old 10m QSO in 1980. Herik is a good guy but don't blame him if you cannot follow his QSL directions. Whoever said Herik does not work CW is wrong. I worked him on 160 CW from both Colorado and NC. We were well aware of the via France issue. There just were too many who didn't get a response for it to be explained away by mail pilfering. When you mentioned poor QSLer in the 1990s, *everyone* rolled their eyes and muttered FR5DX. He had the worst reputation for returning cards I can ever recall. You were lucky to get the cards you did, and maybe because they were 80 and 160 he treated them special. I don't know. Re: [DX-CHAT] Cobwebs at the Russian buro?
John, I typically get 2 or 3 boxes of cards per year (shipped via UPS.) Being an active contester, I get LOTS of cards. I rarely initiate buro cards. 99.9% of what I receive, and do answer, are contest QSOs. Most of the cards in my last shipment are from 2005 and 2006 which isn't bad at all. The most current cards in this batch are from DL and I.. Last year I received a bunch of 10 year old JA cards, but this FJL card going back 17 years sets the record for me! It must be that the outgoing buros occasionally find a batch of cards that was forgotten or misplaced. I've been receiving buro cards from NJDXA for over 35 years (geeze, I'm getting old...) and service has always been excellent.. Sometimes, I wish they'd stop sending them to me :.) 73, Barry John Silberman wrote: Barry, everyone, I'm still receiving cards from the top of the last cycle for 6m euro contacts. Hitting them just right may shave 3-4 months off the process. I return cards the way they came, direct/direct buro/buro, but rubber stamp the buro cards UR card recd from buro and add the date. If I need an entity, it goes direct or manager. I'm too old to wait for the buro. When was the last box of cards from your 2 land buro? Has it been 6 months or more? a year? Every step adds time to the flow. LoTW is a good step for those who just want confirmations. But I like cards, the personal notes hams write, and especially the photos some chose for their card. I am not alone in this. If LoTW would expand to have printable cards like e-qsl, I believe many more hams would use it. If e-qsl was allowed to be credited for awards, LoTW would shrivel and die. Re: [DX-CHAT] New Twist in US Postal Rate Increase
Another QSL-related issue is buro mailings. I typically do buro QSLs once a year. If I have enough to send on my own (usually DL, I, and JA), I'll send a 1 lb. package to each of those buros (the rest going to ARRL Outgoing Service for $8/lb.) In the past, that cost $4/lb via surface parcel post. USPS has eliminated surface PP for international, and now ships all by air. This will now cost $10.40/lb - 2 1/2 times the old rate! Be prepared to see a rate increase from ARRL Outgoing buro soon... Barry W2UP Larry Burke wrote: This may have been covered in the recent thread about the increase in US postal rates that took effect earlier this week, but if it was it got buried in the subsequent debate on LoTW. Apparently there is a new twist in the rate structure that will bump up the cost of mailing if a letter exceeds a certain -- relatively small -- thickness. This would impact mailings of multiple QSL cards by, say, those using a bureau or a QSL forwarding service. And, presumably, the bureaus themselves will face this problem. Someone with more time on their hands may want to dig up the chapter and verse from the postal manual, but the following excerpts from one local news article hit the salient points: - Under the new thickness rules, any item that is bigger than it should be gets bumped into the next size class. - Standard first-class letters cannot be thicker than one-quarter inch. If they are, they fall into the large envelope category, where pricing starts at 80 cents - Large envelopes, with a maximum length of 15 inches and a maximum height of 12 inches, must be no more than three-quarters of an inch thick. Any pieces fatter than that fall into the package class, which starts at $1.13 for the first ounce - Anything labeled fragile or do not bend also is priced at the package rate, even if it's mailed in a standard letter-sized format By way of example, 3 ounces of my own QSL cards and an envelope are in excess of a quarter-inch. If I could mail these as a letter the cost would be $0.75. But since the stack is greater than the maximum thickness allowed by the letter rate, the package is classified as First Class Mail Large Envelope at a rate of $1.14. Note also that there is a surcharge of $0.17 for non-machinable mail including square envelopes and those with clasps. A bit of tinkering with the USPS rate calculator (_http://postcalc.usps.gov/_) is interesting. *Larry Burke WI5A * Brazoria County Texas Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org -- Barry Kutner, W2UP Newtown, PA Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

[DX-CHAT] Stupid countries (formerly BS7H thoughts)
For me, it's not a question of danger. It's a question of does it make any sense? Here we have a few rocks sticking out of the ocean and the only way to inhabit them is to build scaffolding. This is a stupid country. How is it different from Okino Torishima (aka Baldwin's folly?) Off the top of my head, there are other stupid countries, created by stupid rules. This is not meant to be all inclusive. I'm sure there are others: 4u1un 4u1itu - both for obvious reasons. Otherwise add every embassy and American Indian casino. Swains - a privately owned island becomes an instant country due to a rule change (brings up the frequently bantered topic of a few prominent DXers making countries.) When the stupid rule is corrected, the stupid countries should not remain on the list. To me, it doesn't matter if a country is removed or deleted. The all-time DXCC list is a showing of how old someone is, nothing more. 73, Barry, W2UP P.S. In case you're wondering, I have them all and didn't need BS7 (except on RTTY.) Re: [DX-CHAT] The New York Times
CW will die a slow death, at least in the US. The no-code license is a dead end. It will be the rare no-coder that takes the time and effort to learn CW and stick with it long enough to become proficient for on the air use (i.e., 25-30 WPM.) As we OFs get older and disappear, nobody will be taking our place on the CW bands. When I was in Macedonia last year, at the High Speed Telegraphy Championship, I was amazed at all the young kids there from eastern EU. Some of them are CW ops only, and not real hams, but if CW survives anywhere, that's where it will be. Barry, W2UP Ron Notarius W3WN wrote: Much better of an article than I expected. About 2 months ago, when I was struggling with a temporary vertical (wouldn't load on 30, that's another story), a friend, a recent Extra, called on the phone. Told him I was trying to work a particular DX station on 30; he tuned in and worked him in 2 calls, the stinker. Anyway, when we got back to talking, I told him I'd heard both ends of the QSO, so it was good; Randy asked me what software I was using to decode the signals, and I told him it was the organic one between my ears. He was totally astounded that I was able to copy really fast code in my head! (It was about 25 wpm or so, but that too is another story!) We talked about this again at the club christmas party 2 weeks ago. Randy stopped using the computer as a crutch; now that he knows it can be done, he's starting to do it. And he's finding out that he enjoys operating code even more! So... there's hope. So why all the doom and gloom? Yes, the FCC handed us a lemon. Want to make lemonade out of it? (Me? It follows then that if it is enjoyed, it will maintain at least some modicum of popularity. CW is an acquired taste. Not everyone acquires it. It was frustrating and sad to listen to the KH8SI and 4O3T pileups this weekend (mostly SSB). When the DX station says, The station with 7 in the call, ending in Germany why do unrelated calls from all over the country continue to call? When the DX station comes back to a full callsign, why does the pileup size diminish only by half, rather than all but one? It makes it impossible for a better DXer to find the station being worked because so many others are still calling. The rate of these DX stations is being hindered by out-of-turn callers. When the rate is hindered, fewer people can work the DX station. Especially limited-time operations like KH8SI. It made me sad to be a DXer this weekend. My QSO with KH8SI on 17 meters took THREE go-arounds because they could not get my call (presumably because of all the people still calling). That's TWO MORE possible QSOs that were wasted by the out-of-turn callers. Re: [DX-CHAT] Gentlemen HAM'S
Years ago there was no DX Cluster network that announced to the world the instant the rare DX appeared and on what frequency. Also, in the old days, there was no implied guarantee of a QSO, or multiple band-mode QSOs, with each DXpedition. You had to tune, tune tune, be in the right place at the right time and hope propagation was favorable. Sometimes luck played a role, too. Now, if someone doesn't work a DXpedition, they start insulting the operators (or QRMing the operation) for ignoring their part of the world. Maybe we need to involve the cable TV industry in Dxpeditions to provide the technology for on-demand QSOs :.) 73, Barry W2UP On 21 Apr 2006 at 8:55, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I would have to respectfully disagree with Norm's comment that years ago intentional QRM was almost unheard of. It may not have been at the level that you seen nowadays, but it's always been there. I can still recall one evening in college (about 30 years ago... *sigh*), when a bunch of us were operating K3CR on 20 phone, when a small pile-up developed (don't ask me why, we weren't a special event, just a college club station, and a pretty active one at the time to boot). 5 minutes or so into the pileup, we got hit with carriers and various rude comments. Then someone else jumped on and informed the jammers that he'd called the local FCC monitoring station... and someone else taunted him back that the FCC wasn't going to do anything... and so on. As I remember, we eventually just gave up and QSY'd. I've had carriers and other QRM wipe either me or my intended QSO out in contests and DX chasing situations going as far back. Again, maybe not as often as you can see nowadays, but it happens. Why is it more prevalent today? For one thing, IMHO, sheer numbers. We have more hams today than we did 30 years ago, and as a result, while the percentage of lids has (hopefully) remained small, the actual number has risen. And when it takes only 1 or 2 ding dongs to create havoc... We also as a society seem to have grown more tolerant over the years of rude and obnoxious behavior. There are many reasons for that, too many to list here. Suffice, when rude behavior is tolerated in other parts of society, it gets reflected on the bands too. And in some situations, the testosterone (or equivalent) takes over. Sometimes, some of those win at any and all costs take no prisoners hams will do anything to make sure that THEY make the contact, and will sometimes prevent YOU from doing so -- so that they can claim I WON and, by default, you lost. It's against the true spirit that amateur radio once had and still aspires too... but it happens all too often. 73, ron wn3vaw From: Norm Gertz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Fri Apr 21 07:45:47 CDT 2006 To: Dave [EMAIL PROTECTED], 'WC7N' [EMAIL PROTECTED], 'DX-CHAT' dx-chat@njdxa.org Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] [dx-CHAT] Gentlemen HAM'S My observations through the years is that the bad apples who generate QRM and engage in outrageous behaviour on the air are also comporting themselves in the same manner in their everyday lives.
