RE: [DX-NEWS] QSL Question

2003-07-15 Thread Bernie McClenny, W3UR
Randy,
You might want to hold off QSLing JE9IKG and ask him if he is the QSL
manager for current (July 2003) QSOs. Sam (VK2BVS), also the same guy
who trained (?) the H44 stations, told me no QSLs as this is a training
station. When I got my license they told me that a QSL was the final
courtesy of a QSO! Guess that isn't so any more!

Kostas,
Can you talk to Monk Apollo on the phone and ask if W3UR could come and
visit for one week and to bring a new radio and to operate from Mount
Athos? I'd like to do this but would need his approval. I could be
there in September or October.

Hi everybody
I telephoned to Monk Apollo today. He is in Mount Athos in Monastery of
Dohiariou who lives and not outside in Monastery of Soho as it is usual
every summer. I asked him to be active again but he told me that his hf
tranceiver, an old icom, has burned before two months. A friend of him
and
radioamateur from Thessaloniki tried to repair it without success.
After that he will not be on the air in the future.

This is incorrect. The only QSOs
from 4W East Timor, now called Timor-Leste, that do not count are QSOs between May 20, 2002 and early May

I dont think there were any other 4W operations between those dates.

Forgive me if this isn't an
appropriate question for this reflector. I think it's news, at least to me.

A DXer friend claims that DXCC
credit for all of theinitial4W (East Timor) operations back in 2000
are going to be revoked because the documentation was not issued by the proper
authorities (he thought maybe the licenses were issued by the UN, which would
make it a different entity that is now deleted.) He thought some of the recent
operations are legitimate for East Timor and will be accepted for credit. I
haven't seen anything about this in the ARRL bulletins or anywhere else (though
I admit to possibly not paying close enough attention.) Is this true? If so,
which operations are OK?

Here are the operations I've worked:

4W6GH (04/03/00)

4W/N5KO (04/03/00)

4W6MM (11/25/00 -- CQWW CW)

4W3CW (05/25/03 -- CQ WPX CW)

A petition was filed with the Chief Executive Officer of ARRL today
seeking removal of UNTAET (United Nations Transitional Administration in
East Timor) from the DXCC entities list and for the addition of Timor

Leste as an entity.

The DXCC2000 rule under which 4W was added reads:

b. The entity has been assigned a call sign prefix bloc

by the ITU. A provisional prefix bloc assignment may be

made by the Secretary General of ITU. Should such

provisional assignments not be ratified later by the
 full ITU, the

Entity will be removed from the DXCC List

The assignment was not ratified and UNTAET returned it to ITU which has
reissued the block 4WA-4WZ to Timor Leste. It is the position of
JA1BK
and myself that the addition of 4W to the DXCC entities list was premature
and that a mistake was made. This mistake has been acknowledged by
one of
the gentlemen who made it.

ARRL is comprised of people and has, in the past, acknowledged mistakes
when countries were deleted under the former DXCC rules. Islands
which
proved not to have existed are an example and the island of Okinotorishima
was deleted because it simply was mistakenly added to the list.

We expect that after due and hopefully prompt consideration ARRL will
understand the fact that a mistake has been made and that Timor Leste will
be added to the entities list.

There was a five day operation a few weeks ago in Timor Leste and there is
a continuing operation there at the present time. The bulletins will
have
the information

I was unaware and sad to hear about the recent Gambia DXpedition also
participating in this devastating activity. These Freeband operations
have some serious potential to hamper future legal Amateur Radio

receive on this subject. I hope every DX club, foundation and awards
committee will take the strongest possible stance on this virus that
could destroy our great hobby. I honestly don't understand why any
Amateur Radio operator would even consider taking part in Freebanding!

I am astonished by the number of ham DXpeditions who are also
operating on 11m 'freeband'.

For example, the recent ham DXpedition to The Gambia appears to
have also operated on 11m as 118AT/DX with freeband QSLs to
310AT102 (aka YL3CW). These callsigns apparently assigned by the
Alfa Delta organization in Italy.

I've heard that many, many other ham DXpeditions also fire up on
11m 'freeband' (Temotu, Chesterfield, East Timor, etc.). Icom
France is even financially supporting freeband DXpeditions which
means they must be selling a lot of ham gear to freebanders.

Casual Websurfing will reveal that the freebanders are perhaps
even more active than hams in mounting DXpeditions. And going to
places (like VU7, YVO, SV/a) that hams can't easily go. And
tagging along on a lot of ham DX outings.

Is this the DX equivalent of Napster? What does this mean for
our DXing hobby in the long run?

RE: [DX] [DX-NEWS] XW0X

2002-12-02 Thread Bernie McClenny, W3UR
Pete,
I am not picking on you directly. I am however using your situation so
that others may learn. In a situation like this I would highly
recommend that you send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the e-mail
address to the DXCC Desk. Usually Bill Moore, NC1L, will be the person
who responds. They are the horse's mouth so to speak and can tell you
exactly why. It could be a mistake with the computer, this happens
sometimes. Or it could be that they have not received the proper paper
work. It is also possible that the situation is pending, meaning they
have the paper work but are trying to make a decision. The DXCC Desk
should never send the cards back with no explanation. That would be a
huge mistake. If the reason was Invalid Date Range then my guess is
that the XW0X license has several valid time frames and your card does
not fall in any of those time frames. I know that Hiroo's license has
been issued several times and usually only for 30 days at a time.

By reading your note below it sounds to me that Hiroo needs to submit
paper work to the DXCC Desk for the time frame of your QSO. But again I
stress the best and most accurate way is to ask the DXCC Desk. Again I
don't mean to pick on you but to tell everyone who has a question to
submit them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] That is the reason for the e-mail
address. Hopefully now most people who are interested in DXCC will now
know.

There were 2Q's on the QSL card that were questioned. The dates of the

My log indicates good QSO's and I see activity on those dates on the

I think Dennis has said it best. Have patience. Good things come to he who
waits... I am remember the 5A/G3??? operation that happened when Libya was
extremely rare and before the 5A1A DXpedition. If memory serves it was a few
years afterwards that the operation was accredited. In this day and age of
instant gratification perhaps some of us need to have some patience.

Bernie, W3UR

Dennis McAlpine wrote:

Given the problems over the years, I believe it would be a dangerous
precedent to accept verbal permissions to operate. If we cannot rely on
people to even be in the country from which they claim to be operating, how
can we expect them to remember or actually obtain real verbal permission to
 operate from the appropriate authorities?

BTW, how is it decided who is the appropriate authority? Shouldn't we be
consistent? If YT1AD was denied permission by the appropriate authority,
then how could that same authority grant permission to someone else? At
least, it would seem reasonable to seek a suitable answer to that question
from the prior operators who had permission from some appropriate
 authority.

A verbal permission is worth about as much as the paper on which it isn't

[DX-NEWS] PIRATE 3A2DX PIRATE

2002-02-21 Thread Bernie McClenny, W3UR

Yes that is correct 3A2DX is a Pirate station! The authorities in Monaco have
confirmed this information. On top of that he gives F6TZ as his QSL manager.
There are now F6 stations with two letter suffixes. I am surprised no one in
Europe has tracked this fellow down. He is very uninformed!

[DX-NEWS] Ducie Island update

2001-11-17 Thread Bernie McClenny, W3UR

Bill, K6GNX, was unable to get this information out yesterday as he had
an important business meeting. Here is a synopsis of what is going on
with the VP6 Ducie Island DXpedition.

Friday 1608Z
--
As of 1600Z today we still have not heard from the FO0MIZ/MM,
the team going to Pitcairn Island. Dave, VP6DB, says there is
a 12-15 knot head wind so that would slow the team down.

Dave and Tom, VP6TC, are ready and waiting for the arrival of
the team. Once the team arrives they will get on 21260 and
pass word of their safe arrival. The following press releases
were received this morning, first from the IARU and second from
the ARRL. DXCC country # 335 is Ducie Island! Stay tuned for
more news as it becomes available.

Friday 2134Z
--
OK Bob, W3BTX, reports talking to the boys on the boat heading to
Pitcairn Island. It seems they are doing OK however they are traveling
a lot slower than they expected. as of about 2100Z they were expecting
another 24 hours to get to Pitcairn Island. There they will pick up
Tom, VP6TC, and Dave, VP6DB, along with their gear and fuel. It should
take about two hours to load up their stuff and then on to Ducie
Island. Under normal circumstances it should take just under 234 (24)
hours
to make it from Pitcairn to Ducie. Let's hope they are able to pick up
some speed. I'll keep you posted if any other significant news comes
up. For those of you who need a somewhat accurate lat/long on Ducie
Island here it is.

24.39:57S 124.48:21W

Saturday 0124Z

No the Ducie Island team is not swimming to Pitcairn Island! HI. Sorry

about that gang! It was a typo. It should have said 24 hours. I just
got finished talking to Kan, VP6BK/MM, on the way to Pitcairn Island.
They are in a storm, which can been seen at

http://kauai.nrlmry.navy.mil/sat-bin/display10?PHOT=yesAREA=pacific/southern_hemispherePROD=vaporNAV=tropicsCGI=tropics.cgiARCHIVE=LatestMOSAIC_SCALE=15%CURRENT=LATEST.jpg

They were located at 24.30 South 131.09 West at Z and going about 7
knots. At that speed they should be arriving at Pitcairn around 1000Z.
Thankfully they are over half way through the storm, which I think is
having its effects on the team. Everyone is doing OK, but I think some
are suffering some seasickness.

Kan will be on 21260 at 0300Z and Jin, VP6XX/MM, has been found on 21363

on the hour.

Saturday 0342Z

Kan, JA1BK/VP6BK, reports that the wx got a little better and they are
now (0315Z) at 24.30 South 130.80 West. They are moving at about 9-10
knots. At that rate they should arrive at Pitcairn around 1000Z. This
is also approximately the same time that a container ship will be
arriving at Pitcairn. This could add a little delay in the harbor.

The DXpedition will not be extended. They will probably end on
November
22 or 23 as they must be back on Gambiers on November 27.

Saturday 1538Z

The Ducie Island team have made it safely to Pitcairn Island. They
arrived and anchored around 1230Z. There is still a storm in the
Pitcairn area. The storm and the container ship in the harbor are
holding up boarding of Tom, VP6TC, and Dave,. VP6DB, the fuel and
equipment. They hope they can start loading up around 1600Z.

Thanks to VP6BB, VP6BK, WC7N and many others.

[DXR] A61AJ - now has a new QSL route.

2001-09-05 Thread Bernie McClenny, W3UR

Due to a lack of time with my family and business I must step down as
QSL manager for Ali, A61AJ. Joe Veras, N4QB, will now be handling the
QSLing chores. He will have all logs for all QSOs made by A61AJ.
Effective today all QSL requests need to go to N4QB. If you have
already sent your request to W3UR they will be answered by me. Direct
QSLs will go out this month. Bureau cards will go out by the end of the
year. Any requests sent to W3UR after today will be forwarded to N4QB.
The A61AJ Contest team will be very QRV over the next 3 months. Please
help spread the word to your friends, clubs, news letters and magazines
of this change.

[DXR] [ The Daily DX ] T5W - T5X Somalia coming to a close

2001-06-20 Thread Bernie McClenny, W3UR

Thomas, T5W, was heard telling Walter, DJ6QT, in German, that the T5 operation
will come to a close tomorrow (June 21) possible around 1000Z. Baldur, T5X,
and Thomas have installed a 60 meter G5RV for Topband. Baldur plans to be
active tonight on 160 meters. No times were given. Sunrise in Somalia is
0237Z. Baldur has been spotted once on 1835 but usually hangs out around
1822-1825 when he does operate 160 meters. For those listening now Thomas is
on 18152 listening up 5-10 working North America (1900Z).
