Re: [Dx4win] LOTW and DX4WIN
Art, your an amazing fellow also. You would change that pic which has been on your website for 20 years and because of me you took it off! Are you thinned skin or what? I don't care to check out your new one. Like you I paid my $89 for DX4WIN and another $50 bucks for two additional versions over the years. You like your program and I like mine. You are happy with your present setup and I like to see some things improved to which I am willing to pay another $25 for another revision. That is your choice not to do that. So what's the problem? Guys like you, Zoran, Bob come out of the woodwork whenever persons like myself suggest some improvements and then demand what improvements we had in mind so you can then pick it to pieces and ridicule. We know your game. You guys are the Reflector Terrorists!! LOL. Look Art. I want to see continued improvements and want DX4WIN to continue to develop. But you and Bob need to spend some time at the local Senior Citizens Center and play some cards with these folks and work a day or two dispensing out food for the homeless rather than asking N4DSP for a Santy Claus Christmas Wish List for DX4WIN. [Dx4win] Updates
Potential Updates: I agree with all Kostas said below. Especially decoders for more digital modes or the ability to integrate them. A CW decoder would be quite helpful, I have external one but it is just one more thing to remember to open and close. I would also like to have much more control over the cluster info. In fact be able to set it up by band. For example, on 160 and 80 I would like to see worldwide spots but on the other bands not so much. Also, when working 160 I would like to limit my view to just 160 spots and same with some other bands. I would also like to see any time someone spots me on any band as this is often a message and a spot (VE7CC does most of this but is not connected to my Log). Omnirig support is potentially a deal breaker all by its self if it becomes the defector SDR/Transceiver/Pan-Adaptor interface. HNY and 73, Bill, K5ZQ Thanks, William Osborne mailto:wosborn...@gmail.com wosborn...@gmail.com 207-205-9565 ===SV1DPI Comments= HNY to all, Come on guys. All we love dx4win but it needs to be updated. If you use rtty for example, you really need a better decoder as 2tone is. A cw decoder maybe? New features have been asked many times and there are big lists in archive. Even I personally need support for 2 rotors for example, maybe it is not so important as others... For example: 1. support for omnirig. This makes easier parallel control of an sdr receiver and your rig. 2. As the subject of the email says: Better support with lotw, as one button upload, one button download, selective dxcc submission with lotw qsos, or cards or both, compare with online credits, etc. 3. Support of new modes. Some guys of us, use new digi modes that are not supported. A new editable database with modes is the best option. Also RST must accept new reports. 4. Support of ocx. This makes mmtty support easier and let us to use other digi programs as well as mmvari and 2tone for example. 5. Logger32 (its author is SK some years ago but it is updated regularly!!!) already supports connection of its database for countries with clublog. This makes ad1c's life much more easier and we can have one general acceptable database. and much more that Paul has read and I hope has noted. The bad thing for me (worst than not updating) is that Paul, the author of the program, does not say to us his thoughts for all these. I would like to hear his opinion, even it is something like dx4win is my last priority and I don't think I will update it the next 30 years(I hope not saying it)... 73 Kostas, SV1DPI __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] Updates
I think that some of the postings with the subject Updates should really be posted with the subject Additional features I wish were present. DX4Win started as a logging program as I recall. Operating was up to the person who had the amateur license; logging the QSO'S that resulted from the operating was the job of the program. Over time the intellectual property owner has chosen to add features and present new Versions for sale. Some of the added features happen to relate to operating things rather than logging of QSO's. As purchasers and users all we can properly expect is that the features declared to be in the Version we purchased work as they are defined to work for the equipment environment for which they are declared to be functional. That implies that new radios , new rotators or new COM to USB devices are not explicitly supported. If the IP owner chooses to modify the Version to expand the supported equipment environment, great. The same thing is true for logging/operating features. If the IP owner chooses to add them, fine. It seems a bit unreasonable to use the product user reflector to 'bad mouth' the IP owner. Of course there is nothing wrong with making suggestions that the product planner can consider when ( and if ) a new product or new version is being planned. Commenting on what you wish was present or even identifying an alternate product that has a feature you 'wish' was present seems reasonable. Building a list of features that users wish were present seems reasonable too; particularly if maintenance of such a listing is not expected to be the job of the IP owner. It would be even nicer if someone had that list on a web site so it could be referenced by people. That might reduce duplicate postings about certain not present yet features. [Dx4win] com bridges
The bad thing with every com bridge as LPB2 (and many others) is that create virtual ports to make it possible. Unfortunately I use a Microham product (mk2r+) and the support says that installing virtual coms is not a good practice. I have noticed that many virtual coms, slow the computer and ask for a new one with a lot of memory, etc. Instead of this, omnirig des the job without installin virtual coms. Beside this omnirig is open to create your own rigs and that means that someone would create a rig file tomorrow to support a new radio without the need of an update in dx4win... 73 Kostas SV1DPI Στις 5/1/2014 7:23 μμ, ο/η Lou Dietrich έγραψε: To: Ernie w8eh.er...@gmail.com Ernie and Group, I run HDSDR and DX4WIN all the time...simply use LPB2, a free software offered by Larry N8LPYou can have HDSDR, DX4WIN, N1MM and anything else you want to linked to your rigit works great... Re: [Dx4win] Updates
Well said, Lou. I am another early adopter of DX4WIN, from back in the early days of Windows (3.1?) I started with DXLOG (for DOS) and after a number of empty promises of a Win version from its developer (who lived 5 miles from me at the time), I switched to DX4WIN. There are things DX4WIN could do better and more efficiently. The only reason I'm still with it is I don't actively chase awards or (paper) QSLs any more. If I did, I would have jumped ship a number of years ago. And if it weren't for AD1C's generous support, I don't believe there would be many users left today. Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: Re: Updates on a more positive note!
Hi, Thank you Bill for a civil restart of this discussion! We are expecting guests in a little while, so let me be brief: 1. I read the reflector 2. Folks who want to use DXLab please do so! 3. When I saw the enormous of email traffic a few month ago when LoTW had problems I realized it was much better to have a clear delineation between DX4WIN and LoTW. Is saving a few mouse clicks worth my effort and support time afterwards? 4. I wrote a pretty cool regular expression to retrieve the QRZ info, but also realized that the page was constructed to make this difficult for commercial reasons. Have to rethink that. 5. The user has the same tools as I have to construct a radio file because it is part of DX4WIN. Even debugging the interface is part of it. So if YOU have a radio that is not supported by the program, you stand a much better chance to get a working interface going than I can without that radio. (There are still users who believe I have every radio ever made in my shack!) 6. OmniRig: Has evaluated to a powerful system, using text files to describe the interface similar to what DX4WIN does. The problem for me is that OmniRig is event driven, DX4WIN polls the radio. 7. Multiple rotators: Should this be multiple serial ports and you select the rotator or something smarter (band, or band segment driven with possible override). How may users have multiple rotators? 8. I have a pretty long list of things to do, unfortunately it does not indicate when / how to do this. Happy New Year! --Paul, KK4HD PS I hope we can keep these discussions civilized. The history of this reflector goes back many years, and today seems to be the first time things are getting slightly out of hand. Please avoid personal attacks. Hi to all. I'm a LOTW user since version 5. I think this is the simpliest and powerfull dx logging program on the air. But I had to ask a pretty *new* feature: LOTW let you download the list of QSOs that are used for claim the score... Can you import that file using their proprietary fields to update the award status flags (confirmed, submitted, checked)? We have a nice help from AD1C tool to manage DXCC scores... but the DXCC QSL Download https://lotw.arrl.org/lotwuser/logbook/qslcards.php?ac_acct=1 is a useful Other thing about online callbook... they all have XML direct access... why DX4WIN don't interface XML directly??? [Dx4win] Updates - My LoTW Opinion and a Question
Relative to LoTW improvements: One of the great features of DX4Win is it's ability to handle multiple logs, whether they are DXpeditions, grid expeditions or just a club call. Using the Groups and Selections choices, they can be combined or separated easily. LoTW requires that some of these logs be signed (by TQSL) individually (for example, an operation from a different grid square). I believe that any attempt to reduce the number of clicks to shorten the LoTW upload process will degrade this feature. Incorporation of additional information from LoTW in the download process is a great idea, although I think LoTW is not a mature system and waiting until it settles out has some merit (the recent upgrades to TQSL are an example). I can handle a couple extra clicks for a while longer. My question: Can someone explain the XML interface to QRZ.com? Is this is an automated download of address or similar information? In my experience, much of the information in QRZ.com is poorly formatted and occasionally just plain wrong. If you only work USA stations, it is pretty consistent, but not so for DX stations. Help me out Thanks, 73 and HNY to everyone. Dear Chano, That is exactly what n4dsp wants you to believe. He wrote many messages today stating that interfacing to LoTW should be fully automated and that I should sell the company. There will be new versions in the future, but I want to figure out what new features make sense in terms of effort, interest of the users but most importantly the support required. --Paul, KK4HD On Sun, Jan 5, 2014 at 7:16 PM, CHANO - EA8OG ea8og2...@gmail.com wrote: I understand in this last email that DX4WIN died about updates, what you have is what you get. is that, please clearly confirm this. thanks Sebastián Gámez Hernández E A 8 O G 73´S 2014/1/5 n4dsp n4...@triad.rr.com With due respect to all little change is going to occur which I am sorry to say. We have FINALLY heard from Paul and aware of the direction DX4WIN is taking. Well boys I have supported Paul and DX4WIN speaking to others informing them what a great dx logging program it is and quite frankly I cannot do that any longer especially after what Paul had to say today. Therefore I downloaded and installed LOGGER 32 and like all new programs there is quite a learning curve but I will be much further ahead in another month than I will be with DX4WIN five years from now. Have been loyal to DX4WIN but it's over. Some will be happy there will no longer see any more posts from n4dsp! LOL. Hate to see such a great dx logging program coming to it's end and it's troublesome. Made the ARRL Honor Roll with this program from my first contact to #334. Paul,SELL THE COMPANY. I had a Yaesu 'demo' FT3000 shipped to me and it sat here for months awaiting assistance and nothing...this was a while after his personal moveyes, the rig files are rather basic but how DX4WIN handles these files are hard coded and cannot be user defined or changed. Paul, this isn't an attack on you...and regrettably there has been some severe tone between a few users...hopefully, we can get back on a more positive, productive track. However, this thread is an indication of the frustration of your loyal, paid users. Yes... we could all move to a different platform ...we have a number of other choices...but we have been sticking with DX4WIN but without finite information from you, Paul, we've been in an informational vacuum. Re: [Dx4win] Updates - LPB2
Lou, thanks for the tip about the LPB2 program. I didn't know it was out there. I installed LPB2 and it does exactly what I need it to do. I have it running right now with my Yaesu FT-950, DX4Win, HDSDR and N3FJP contest program. They all know what the radio is doing now. Thanks again for the 'tip of the day'. 73 Ernie W8EH On 1/5/2014 10:59 AM, Lou Dietrich wrote: Ernie and Group, I run HDSDR and DX4WIN all the time...simply use LPB2, a free software offered by Larry N8LPYou can have HDSDR, DX4WIN, N1MM and anything else you want to linked to your rigit works great... [Dx4win] LOTW Support
Just as a point of information, the TQSL log signing application has been completely re-written to make the process more secure and easier to interface with. This wouldn't affect reading LOTW records, but I understand it makes the log submission process easier to automate. However I disagree that the steps to upload a log to LoTW are many and confusing. There are two steps: 1. LoTW | Export to LoTW using DX4WIN 2. Sign and upload log using TQSL (signing is now integrated with uploading) I used to monitor another popular logging reflector. That program integrates the LoTW upload into the program. Would you like to guess what half the list traffic consists of? That's right, why didn't my upload to LoTW work. The DX4WIN reflector would quickly degenerate into the same. By keeping the export and upload separate, it's easier to pinpoint where the problem is. If the problem is with DX4WIN, then this is the reflector to ask. However, if the problem is with LotW, then *that* becomes the reflector to ask. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, jjreis...@alum.mit.edu, http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: Re: Updates on a more positive note!
Hi Dick, Thank you for your personal note! I copy the reflector on my reply; it may be educational. Well I beat you in number of years developing commercial software. (since 1976) What some, and may you too, do not appreciate is the wide scale of computer experience DX4WIN users have. In my regular job, most of our users have a masters or phd or are students working towards it. So there is a certain level of expectation what your customer understands. This is not the case with DX4WIN users. We had users who do not recall the difference between a left mouse click or a right mouse click and put me on the phone with their son or spouse who 'knows computers'. Some do not recall that they bought the program already, and try to purchase a license over and over again. Some of my users love to get me on the phone just for the chit chat. etc. So from my perspective, minimizing support is important, especially when this happens in the evening hours or in the weekend. I want a user to be able to figure out how its done without having to ask me. --Paul, KK4HD http://www.dx4win.com __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
