Hi group,

A friend of mine has a laptop, CT-17, 756 Pro with a serial to USB cable
converter (and DX4Windows of course). Does anyone know how to setup the
radio interface with a USB port, or determine what port you are on? Is this
even possible? He doesn't have a serial port available on the laptop, hence
the USB cable. I use a serial port so I've not run into this before so I
thought I'd poll the experience of the group.
Thanks!

I think what you may need to know is the following (used with a single USB
to RS-232 cable):

(for Windows XP, anyway):

Right click on My Computer and select Properties. On the Hardware tab
select Device Manager. Scroll down to Ports and expand by left clicking on
the + sign. Right click on the new COM port and select Properties. On the
Settings tab there should be a box which indicates the current COM port, and
will allow you to set a different port, if desired. You may have to click
on Advanced to see this box. Make whatever changes are necessary and use OK
for each box to save the changes.

[Dx4win] Searching for QSLs Sent, Not Received

Interesting reply.

Does this special date work for all date fields - ie QSL date ??

To turn the problem on it's head - can you search for QSl entries with a
date (with a view to clearing them); where no QSL has been received? I seem
to have a lot of records with a date, as if I have sent QSL's, but not
received one back. I would like to clear these fields

--

First, you can find those records by using Filter | Search | QSL Received
N and QSL Date greater than 01/01/1901, but less than the first QSO date
in the database. You can export them, or use Window | Logbook and
right-click for special reports.

Second, although you can't easily mass clear the QSL Date field, you can use
the Mailed Cutoff date in File | Preferences to ignore old QSL dates. I set
mine to 1000, about 2-1/2 years. This suppresses the M in reports for
old QSLs sent but not received.

[Dx4win] Award submissions

2005-10-28 Thread J. F. Samuels
You are correct that it will chose the latest card and flag that as S.

But, if you want to submit a different card, you also have to deselect the
one automatically set by the submission. Otherwise, when the submitted
cards return, and you run Reports | DXCC | Change award flags | DXCC Mixed |
Submitted - Checked, you will falsely indicate that the card automatically
chosen for submission was actually checked.

After you run the above, you can manually change whatever is necessary to
correct any errors -- like when a card you submitted has been rejected by
the ARRL. A few times they told me it was a duplicate submission -- I
already had credit. Of course, I didn't think I had submitted for that
country before, so would carefully search previous submissions. In some
cases, I never found a previous one, so had to use the most recently
submitted card anyway! You'll never get it 100.00 percent correct.

I gave up manually changing the submissions, although I would have preferred
to have used the oldest cards rather than newest.

Please, can anyone confirm what I believe re DX4Win's handling of Award
Submissions.

When you 'submit'(Reports/DXCC/Submission) for an award, DX4Win
automatically goes through its database and allocates the most recent
QSO that qualifies to confirm whatever it is you have asked it to
confirm. In this case DXCC Mixed.

Then, when/if you specifically 'Submit' a particular QSL via the logging
page, that QSL replaces the one automatically selected by the program.

Is that how it works?

[Dx4win] RTTY Window and RigBlaster

2005-10-06 Thread J. F. Samuels
John, a more accurate answer to your question might be, No, because the
RTTY window only sends and receives character data. It was supposed to be
used with a hardware TNC, such as a KAM, which does the encoding and
decoding work. I use the window that way.

The alternative method is to use a software package, such as MMTTY or MixW,
to do the sound-to-digital and vice-versa conversions. Then the RTTY window
is not used, since those packages have their own windows. The newest
version of DX4WIN has integrated support for MMTTY, I am told.

Larry, I would be interested in your jumper settings and connections for
your setup --please post them.

John,

I use the RIGblaster Plus with an Icom 756 ProIII, DX4Win 7.01, MMTY in FSK,
and a WaveNode wattmeter (LPT port interface). I operate phone, CW, RTTY,
and PSK modes, and it works well _AFTER_ spending a lot of time messing
around with the internal jumpers. I can switch between modes instantly
without any reconfiguration or switch flipping -- accomplished only by using
2 serial and two parallel ports.

- first serial port for rig control
- second serial port for MMTTY transmit control
- first parallel LPT port for rotor control
- second parallel port for CW keying and Wavenode wattmeter interface

If you decide to go with a RIGblaster Plus, let me know -- I'd be happy to
share the document I wrote that describes the correct settings in the RB
Plus. (( I do not know if those would translate into equal success with a
straight RIGblaster))

 Kostas,
 From the manual...
 *_File Import_*

A simple ASCII text file can be used to import calendar events. The
 file format is as follows:

 :

 start_date commaend_datecommanotes

Notes can be up to 40 characters long.

A date should be formatted as: d(d)/m(m)/yy(yy) or as d(d)/m(m)/yy(yy)

Lines starting with an asterisk ('*') will be ignored.

They are available to GOLIST subscribers:

I should have added:

There is nothing to stop anyone from compiling the information themselves
(from various DX bulletins, etc.) and assembling the data into DX4WIN
calendar format. John K1XN has been doing a DX calendar for years, and
since DX4WIN already supports the GOLIST, it seemed natural to support the
calendar as well. Thanks to John for distributing the data in a format
that DX4WIN can use. I would not be using the calendar otherwise.

[Dx4win] Setting Upload and Upload Date fields?

2005-01-25 Thread J. F. Samuels
From a message I sent a few days ago:

...OK, I had put off doing anything with DX4WIN for LOTW until this release.
I
had sent all my QSOs to LOTW last May.

Tonight I used a selection and Multiple QSO Operation to place a May, 2004
date in all I had sent up. But, I couldn't get that to work until I set the
Upload flag to Y on those QSOs; then it worked.

So:
1. Use a selection to select your previously sent records.
2. Use Labels-Set Upload Flags.
3. Use QSO-Multiple QSO Ops to set the desired Upload Date on the
selection.

I used version 6.04 to make a second submission to LoTW. I then
downloaded the reports of confirmed QSOs from both submissions and
imported them into DX4WIN. The Upload Confirmed flag was set in the
 appropriate QSOs in my logbook.

The Upload and Uploaded Date fields were not set for my first
LoTW submission because I used version 6.03 to make that submission.

What is the easiest way to set the Upload and Uploaded Date

Each version of DX4WIN is in its own sub-directory:

 \Ham Radio\DX4WIN603
 \Ham Radio\DX4WIN604

 1. Perform a fresh install into Ham Radio\DX4WIN604
 2. Copy your key (filename = callsign.key) from the previous \DX4WIN603
folder to the new v604 folder
 3. Launch v603 and do a File Preferences Write ini file. Close v603.
 4. Launch v604 and do a File Preferences merge ini file from the
location you saved in step 3
 5. Select File Open, and open your old V603 log file with V604 (which
 is

 what you are running now
 6. Select File Save as, and save your log file into the
 \DX4WIN604\SAVE
 directory.
 7. Go through all the preferences and reset the ones that are not
automatically imported with the ini file

 Done!

Hope above helps you, only one thing I would add is, if you have changed
 any
cluster setting in TCP file you need to amend these too.

[Dx4win] LOTW

2005-01-20 Thread J. F. Samuels
OK, I had put off doing anything with DX4WIN for LOTW until this release. I
had sent all my QSOs to LOTW last May.

Tonight I used a selection and Multiple QSO Operation to place a May, 2004
date in all I had sent up. But, I couldn't get that to work until I set the
Upload flag to Y on those QSOs; then it worked.

Then I used a selection to set the upload flags on all the new QSOs since
May 2004, created the ADIF file, used TQSL and uploaded the data to LOTW. I
noted that the Upload Date was updated to today, but the Upload Flag was not
reset. Is that correct? Shouldn't it be reset off? Should I do it myself?
I know that the logic of having an upload date will prevent sending that
record again, but it just seems odd.

With the LOTW site updated, I downloaded the LOTW Report and imported it
into DX4WIN. I noted that the Country window did not show C for some QSOs
confirmed by LOTW, but not by QSL card. Then I went to preferences and told
it to accept Cards or LOTW, saved it, and voila!, LOTW confirmations now
count in DX4WIN! Neat. And, it matches the LOTW summaries very closely.

Just to check, I did a selection on Upload Confirmed and QSL received N
and saw hundreds of newly confirmed QSOs, some of which count towards
various awards. I also did a selection on QSL Y and Upload Confirmed Y
and found two QSOs which I had tagged to send a QSL direct, but now don't
need to. Save me some bux.

It works great! Thanks, Paul.

 Hello all,
I am about to go on expedition, and would like to use DX4Win on a portable
computer that a friend lets me use on that occasion.
I installed DX4Win, and even as a demo, the program will not start, with
an error message saying : Port driver not found.
 The computer has Windows Millenium.
Any hint, and way to correct that ?

 Thanks and 73

 My mark v works fine.
when you press and hold the PKT button then the mark v turns to user mode.
the bad thing is that the lamps pkt+lsb are still on same as before, but
really it is in user mode.
then in menu 8-6 set the last choise EASY-SET to SSTV-U.
The manual is not so good on these things..
the site www.va3cr.net has the above solution and it works fine. Search
 for
 psk settings and voila...

 Milan,
FT1000MP can't be set for PKT/USB either. I had to use SSB/USB mode and
inject PSK31 audio into the microphone input instead in the packet input
connector(otherwise would have to re-calculate PSK31 frequencies on each
 band) !

 Ed,

the DX4WIN and YAESU MARK-V works not good.

When using LSB / PKT for PSK31, the Center Radio ALT+R works in opposite
 way.
(I'am unable to set MARK-V for PKT and USB. Only to SSB/USB and PSK31,
but this works with large filter only, no narrow filter is possible).
In this point (filter / mode combination) the FT-1000MP was much better.

I was asking for correction since 5.01 version, but without success.

My opinion is that the PSK31 with the DX4WIN is not so good
(less sensitive) with comparison to MixW or WinWarbler.

I am happy to add entries to the country file, but only those that can be

Please send me the call (only UA9[S,T,W], other prefixes like RA9, UZ9
etc. OK), the date of the QSO and confirm that the card says CQ Zone 17.

Only the following are currently listed:

   RX9TX,17,UA9,17/02/2001
   U9W/W6/G3MHV,0,UA9,20/05/1989
   UA9TS,17,UA9,29/11/1992

I found a few QSLs in my collection, and I will be adding these:

   RU9TC, RV9WB, RW9WJ, RX9SX, UA9WTF, UV9WN and UZ9WXK.

Steve N3SL found these, they will be added also:

[Dx4win] Using Rigblaster for CW/RTTY

2004-11-07 Thread J. F. Samuels
Like Joe said, you have to use two ports. Run the second one to the
RigBlasterPro B interface. If you define the second port with MMTTY (or
MixW), you can use FSK, if your rig supports it. BTW, you must use a real
port, not a USB derived one (with only one known exception), for successful
FSK.

I've been through the manual and can't figure this out. I've successfully
configured DX4WIN for CW keying using my Rigblaster Pro. However, when
trying to set up RTTY, which is also on COM1, the software refuses to open

MMTTY successfully when DX4WIN is closed, but I get a COM1 error message

Guess I can get rid of CW keying if necessary, but is anyone using DX4WIN

interface something like MMTTY with DX4WIN?

 Hi,
Previously, with VHF packet cluster and dx4win 5.03, I used announce
filtering by zone of alert origin, which worked OK.
After starting using 6.03 and TCP/IP for announcement, spot window shows
packets coming from everywhere, despite that in Preferences/Packet 1 (or
RTTY) window I have entered #14,#15,#16 in Prefixes/Zones for spotters box
to limit spots only to those announced by European stations.

I can filter spots directly via a cluster command accept/spots by_zone
14,15,16 , but am curious is dx4win presuming this when TCP/IP is used
 and
in this case ignores it's own filter?

 Any comments?

[Dx4win] MMTTY

2004-09-14 Thread J. F. Samuels
I also use MMTTY, but just for the tuning cross thing to help me tune in
signals. But, I purchased MixW, and use that, since 1) it does a slightly
better job of decoding RTTY under adverse conditions, 2) it runs all sorts
of other modes, including packet, MFSK and Hellschreiber. But, integration
of MMTTY would go a long way towards keeping DX4WIN in the mainstream - it
works fine for casual RTTY.

It should come, probably, in version 7.0, while 6.4 will fix the accumulated
problems we now face. Right?

My latest problem came yesterday in the June VHF contest. Although I
disabled my HF radio, since my VHF radio is not connected to DX4WIN, every
time a spot came in it reset my mode and band info from SSB or CW, 6 or 2
meters, to whatever the latest spot was. Very inconvenient.

John, K2CIB

[Dx4win] RTTY

2004-09-08 Thread J. F. Samuels
To my knowledge it does not integrate with any sound-card based RTTY
programs. I know you can import QSOs from WriteLog and many others, but not
in real time.

For casual QSOs, I use the RTTY window to drive my KAM in terminal mode.
I've set up the PF macros to do useful things, almost the same as in the PSK
window. Of course, I have to set the call and other info in DX4WIN
manually. In a contest, that would slow me up considerably, so I use MixW,
export ADIF, then import it to DX4WIN after the contest.

Appendix E mentions the possibility of data sharing with other programs,
and the methods used, but does not name any programs which are compatible.

I would like information on how users work everyday RTTY QSOs with the

very
well. Can DX4WIN provide a similar level of integration and ease of
operation using soundcard based RTTY programs like MMTTY?

I am new to DX4WIN, and would like to know if there is a work around to
 my (admittedly) very small problem.

There are a number of stations in my log that I have worked that have
exactly the same callsign, although their addresses have been different.
Indeed, their entity has been different.

For example, 3D2XX worked from both Fiji and Rotuma.

In the 'Notes for this Call' field, I typically enter the name of the
 station, and their basic address.

In DX4WIN, I find that, the SECOND time I enter a QSO with the same
call, DX4WIN updates the FIRST address.

Is there a way that I can record different addresses in this field for
the same call - and how?

This message is being sent to the DX4Win reflector and to DX4Win support

Having used 6.0.3 for a bit now, I feel I can make some comments on it. By
far for the most part, it's a good update. Most of what I use of the new
features is the LOTW interfacing features. A little confusing (as has been
discussed on this reflector), but once you understand how to do it, not
bad
at all. The DXCC submission now allowing for DXCC challenge submissions is
a
 plus, too.

DX4Win is the best DX logging program out there. Other programs are slow
(even making my Athlon XP 3000 box seem like it's struggling a bit), or
are
SO FULL of things to adjust (I don't want to have to spend an hour
adjusting
every font and every color on every window) or so full of features
(digital voice keyers, beacon tracking, etc) that they skimp on basic
stuff
like DXCC awards submission or any sort of WAZ tracking at all. DX4Win is
fast, it has easy to read windows, and it covers the needs of a logging
program (data entry and reporting) very, very well.

After saying all that, my suggestions

 1) A better list of rotator directions for prefixes:
For example. every time I enter a UA0 or UA9 call, DX4Win wants to rotate
my
beam to 353 degrees. Problem is, a ham in Asiatic Russia might be at a
heading of anywhere from 325 to 25 degrees from here. A more detailed
prefix
list (UA9A, UA9K, UA0Z, UA0Y, etc, etc) would provide a better bearing for
 automatic rotator adjustment.

 2) A date range and band filter on the Change Award Flags selection:
DXCC cards submitted to Field Checkers can't include 160m cards or cards
more than 10 years old. Being able to select these cards right from DX4Win
 would be a big help.

 3) The ability to IMPORT from a CSV file:
Sometimes, you just want to make changes to multiple items in your log
that
you know you just couldn't expect a logging program designer to think of.
DX4Win can already export all fields to CSV. If it could RE-IMPORT those
fields after you did whatever magic you had to in your favorite
spreadsheet
 program, that would be sweet.

 4) A seperate window for browsing the log than from entering data
This is something I used to have in a previous program some years back,
and
I have gotten used to not having it. Still I miss not having to lose the
current entry in my log window just because I want to do a search through
my
log to see what QSO's meet a certain critera.

Thanks to all (including Paul) for listening to my suggestions.

Whilst checking DXCC Summary status I have discovered a count problem
 between v 5.03 and 6.03.
Using the same log, with identical date selection parametrs, the Summary
reports differ by one confirmed QSO, apparently a CW contact. The number
of
confirmed CW QSOs is reported to be the same under both versions.
Version 5.03 says 54 worked and 13 confirmed while 6.03 says 55 worked and
12 confirmed. Even taking things to a band level, 14Mhz is where the
problem
seem to lie but again the number of confirmed QSOs is the same on both
versions and the reports begin and end with the same log entries.
Not that it is important at this stage, has anyone else encountered
similar
apparent discrepancies and if so what solution was applied? Needless to
say
I cannot find the offending QSO.
The Summary numbers are the same in all other respects, just v 5.03 says I
 have 1 more confirmed?

Also noted that a v 5.03 entry MM/PA3GIO (GM), was converted as an error

6.03 with a PA prefix. Entry as a new QSO on 6.03 did produce a GM prefix.

[Dx4win] Program Hangs on Call sign

2004-05-29 Thread J. F. Samuels
I am having the same trouble -- only works on first call. But, it doesn't
hang up on me, it just copies bits and pieces to various fields.

In 6.02 it didn't work at all -- it was worse.

Subject: [Dx4win] Program Hangs on Call sign

 Hello All,
I am having a problem in 6.03, with moving the PSK31 call sign from the RX
 window to the QSO window.
 1. When the program initially starts and I am receiving a PSK signal, I
 double
click on the call sign to move it to the QSO window, which works OK.
 2. When I double click on another call sign, the program does not seem
to
recognize it as a call sign.
 3. The pop up screen do you want to keep this record etc. does not
come
 up.
 4. The QSO screen seems to want to highlight the RST field. and further
clicking on the new call sign puts random information in the Notes for
this QSO field. as the program attempts to populate the QSO window
fields.
 5. I then have to restart the program to clear this condition. However,
trying to move between call signs, hangs the program. Is there something
I
need to do in 603 to make this work ?
 6. There is no external lookup at this time
 7. This condition does not exist in 602.

 Thanks

[Dx4win] Grid Index out of Range Error

2004-05-17 Thread J. F. Samuels
No one replied so will ask again:

I just created a new log to fool around with LOTW, and when I try to use

dummy QSO in, even with a grid, but still same message. And, when I reply
OK, the import/export box comes up without any filters. I tried merging my

I recall seeing this symptom in an old append, but can't find it and don't

[Dx4win] DX4WIN New Version

I like MMTTY and continue to use it for just the neat RTTY tuning indicator.
I have carefully compared my KAM, MMTTY and MixW for receiving
RTTY, and MixW definitely has the edge, with MMTTY second.

MixW is appealing also since it runs CW, Packet, FSK31, AMTOR, PACTOR
(receive only), MFSK, Throb, MT63, Hellschreiber, FAX and SSTV, as well as
BPSK31 and QPSK31. I do not use its logging capabilities.

No! When you do a submission, for Mixed DXCC for example, the - will be
changed to Subm, for Submitted. When the cards have been accepted towards
the award, the Subm can be changed to Chkd. The easiest way to do this
is Reports-Change Award Flags-Change Submitted to Checked. Then if a few

[Dx4win] Orion timeouts with DX4WIN?

2004-01-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] (J. F. Samuels)
It's a remote possibility, but Win98 suffered from a jerky mouse and
miscellaneous delay problem when an HP LaserJet 1100 was attached. There
was, eventually, a patch from HP to fix it. Let me know if you need a

Win98 will not be supported much longer. Am happy with Win XP -- much more

I do not see timeouts but at times slow response in the DX4WIN program. I
don't use the keyboard for sending CW but prefer to do it myself. However
at
times I do see some delay moving from item to item on the QSO window.

My system is Window 98 running on a 400 Meg machine with 128 Meg of ram.
The
only other program running id DXTelnet and of course the usual Windows
 system stuff including Ethernet support.

I hate to be picky but in a network or connectivity environment when
something times out it cease to function. As I said in my first sentence I
think we are seeing slow response from the operating system and possibly
the
DX4WIN program. Most logging programs were not originally written to
support
a 57.6Kb communications speed and my suspicion this is where the problem
lies. Obviously the OS can handle 10Mb or 100Mb Ethernet connectivity but
quite possibly the two in conjunction are causing the delays in the
program.

  Just my thoughts!

A friend who had just received an Orion has found difficulties with
 DX4WIN as follows:

 1. Sometimes when sending CW from the DX4WIN keyboard, he sees long
delays (1-2 seconds) before sending commences. It never stutters once it
 starts, but occasionally hesitates.

 2. If he sets Retries to 1 on the poll setting, the radio times out
almost immediately, even with 10 second polling intervals. If retries is
set to 2, then it seems to operate OK - has anyone experienced timeouts
 with the Orion / DX4WIN?

He has all the interface settings set at the TT specified values.

Tnx in advance for any help,

Lately when I spot a DX station on the Packet window it comes up fine. BUT

it go to the By Time window and then DISAPPEAR!! Honest! It had worked
fine on KØMP cluster here in Metro Denver but KØMP shut down about 6

then spots did not transfer. He did that so it would not hang up the

[Dx4win] Group Names

2003-09-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] (J. F. Samuels)
Happened to me too. Here is Paul's reply:

John,

Group names are part of the log. A way to loose the group names
is to export a log, and import into a new one.

When you have a log with group names in it, proceed as follows:
1. Keep backup information!!
2. Open the log with the groups in it.
3. Delete all QSOs in that log
4. Use the File | Import | Merge DX4WIN log to add your most recent
log.
5. Save the log under a new name

Paul

It worked! They all came back.

This was one of my recent appends:

While preparing to do a DXCC submission, I discovered I've lost all my
Group
definitions. And, if I search for a group number, it is not found in the
database.

I went back on saved logs and found that the one saved on 8/5/2003 has the
info OK, newer ones do not.

What happened? Is it because of moving to the new Country file? Did I do
something wrong?

What can I do to recover the lost groups? Where is the group info stored?

I can't just merge the newer QSO records into the old file, because many
QSLs were received and logged during August.

Any ideas appreciated.

I think I boiled the priorities down to three simple rules:

 1. All-time never worked has the highest priority.

 2. When both entities are unworked or both entities are
worked but not confirmed, mode has priority over band.

 3. When one entity is unworked and the other is worked
but not confirmed, the unworked entity has priority
  over the worked entity.

The priorities I suggested earlier seem to embody these requirements:

1 = never worked
2 = never worked mode
3 = never worked band
4 = unconfirmed mode
5 = unconfirmed band

Does this make sense to everyone?

[Dx4win] 6.0x Misc.

2003-02-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] (J. F. Samuels)
First, thank you, Paul, for making the best logging software better still.
I know, having been a programmer, how difficult it is to get it all right.
I am particularly pleased with the fixes for the mailed cutoff date, and set
a filter when double click in the Country window. Looking over the list of
enhancements over 5.03, I see many improvements for which I have waited!

That said, here are two categories for your consideration:

1. Existing 6.02 problems (under Windows XP Home anyway)
o PSK31 mouse double click still does not populate the QSO window fields
properly (known bug)
o If my packet, RTTY or rotator window fails to open (local problem with USB
ports and RF), the next time I open DX4WIN those windows are all over the
place, not where they belong. I have to re-set them.
o The packet, and maybe RTTY, input area does not remember its size setting.
It must be reset every time I open DX4WIN (already reported).
o PF3 causes a large DOS box to appear before the callsign/lookup window
appears when DX4WIN is opened with a shortcut. Changing the Startin folder
does not help. If DX4WIN is opened directly from the .exe file, no DOS
window appears. This problem has also been reported.
o Re above, if I set Automatic Update, a search begins on the first
character typed with no delay, which ties things up for a while and prevents
me from completing typing the call

2. Wish List
o Green-reverse spots when not confirmed even when the contact contributes
to nothing (as discussed)
o Ability to copy a few lines from the packet window so I can paste them
into a manager's address window
o Ability to customize fields and their sequence in the Same Call window (I
would like to add QSL method, Label?, etc.)
o See local time in the DX Sunrise/Sunset - Info window -- wasn't that there
once?
o Revert the map to 5.03 where I could see a highlighted country much more
clearly
o Double click on RTTY fields to populate QSO fields
o Use gray for disabled modes/bands only. Use black for confirmed mode and
band. Be able to ignore both.
o Station worked as part of SWL card
