To: DX4Windows dx4win@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original Hi group, A friend of mine has a laptop, CT-17, 756 Pro with a serial to USB cable converter (and DX4Windows of course). Does anyone know how to setup the radio interface with a USB port, or determine what port you are on? Is this even possible? He doesn't have a serial port available on the laptop, hence the USB cable. I use a serial port so I've not run into this before so I thought I'd poll the experience of the group. Thanks! Todd WM8C's Ham Links www.wm8c.com -- I think what you may need to know is the following (used with a single USB to RS-232 cable): (for Windows XP, anyway): Right click on My Computer and select Properties. On the Hardware tab select Device Manager. Scroll down to Ports and expand by left clicking on the + sign. Right click on the new COM port and select Properties. On the Settings tab there should be a box which indicates the current COM port, and will allow you to set a different port, if desired. You may have to click on Advanced to see this box. Make whatever changes are necessary and use OK for each box to save the changes. John, K2CIB
[Dx4win] Searching for QSLs Sent, Not Received

Does this special date work for all date fields - ie QSL date ?? To turn the problem on it's head - can you search for QSl entries with a date (with a view to clearing them); where no QSL has been received? I seem to have a lot of records with a date, as if I have sent QSL's, but not received one back. I would like to clear these fields 73 Dave G3NKC -- First, you can find those records by using Filter | Search | QSL Received N and QSL Date greater than 01/01/1901, but less than the first QSO date in the database. You can export them, or use Window | Logbook and right-click for special reports. Second, although you can't easily mass clear the QSL Date field, you can use the Mailed Cutoff date in File | Preferences to ignore old QSL dates. I set mine to 1000, about 2-1/2 years. This suppresses the M in reports for old QSLs sent but not received. John, K2CIB
[Dx4win] Award submissions
You are correct that it will chose the latest card and flag that as S. But, if you want to submit a different card, you also have to deselect the one automatically set by the submission. Otherwise, when the submitted cards return, and you run Reports | DXCC | Change award flags | DXCC Mixed | Submitted - Checked, you will falsely indicate that the card automatically chosen for submission was actually checked. After you run the above, you can manually change whatever is necessary to correct any errors -- like when a card you submitted has been rejected by the ARRL. A few times they told me it was a duplicate submission -- I already had credit. Of course, I didn't think I had submitted for that country before, so would carefully search previous submissions. In some cases, I never found a previous one, so had to use the most recently submitted card anyway! You'll never get it 100.00 percent correct. I gave up manually changing the submissions, although I would have preferred to have used the oldest cards rather than newest. When you 'submit'(Reports/DXCC/Submission) for an award, DX4Win automatically goes through its database and allocates the most recent QSO that qualifies to confirm whatever it is you have asked it to confirm. In this case DXCC Mixed. Then, when/if you specifically 'Submit' a particular QSL via the logging page, that QSL replaces the one automatically selected by the program. Is that how it works? [Dx4win] RTTY Window and RigBlaster
John, a more accurate answer to your question might be, No, because the RTTY window only sends and receives character data. It was supposed to be used with a hardware TNC, such as a KAM, which does the encoding and decoding work. I use the window that way. The alternative method is to use a software package, such as MMTTY or MixW, to do the sound-to-digital and vice-versa conversions. Then the RTTY window is not used, since those packages have their own windows. The newest version of DX4WIN has integrated support for MMTTY, I am told. From a message I sent a few days ago: ...OK, I had put off doing anything with DX4WIN for LOTW until this release. I had sent all my QSOs to LOTW last May. Then I used a selection to set the upload flags on all the new QSOs since May 2004, created the ADIF file, used TQSL and uploaded the data to LOTW. I noted that the Upload Date was updated to today, but the Upload Flag was not reset. Is that correct? Shouldn't it be reset off? Should I do it myself? I know that the logic of having an upload date will prevent sending that record again, but it just seems odd. With the LOTW site updated, I downloaded the LOTW Report and imported it into DX4WIN. I noted that the Country window did not show C for some QSOs confirmed by LOTW, but not by QSL card. Then I went to preferences and told it to accept Cards or LOTW, saved it, and voila!, LOTW confirmations now count in DX4WIN! Neat. And, it matches the LOTW summaries very closely. Just to check, I did a selection on Upload Confirmed and QSL received N and saw hundreds of newly confirmed QSOs, some of which count towards various awards. I also did a selection on QSL Y and Upload Confirmed Y and found two QSOs which I had tagged to send a QSL direct, but now don't need to. Save me some bux. It works great! [Dx4win] Using Rigblaster for CW/RTTY
Like Joe said, you have to use two ports. Run the second one to the RigBlasterPro B interface. If you define the second port with MMTTY (or MixW), you can use FSK, if your rig supports it. BTW, you must use a real port, not a USB derived one (with only one known exception), for successful FSK. [Dx4win] MMTTY
I also use MMTTY, but just for the tuning cross thing to help me tune in signals. But, I purchased MixW, and use that, since 1) it does a slightly better job of decoding RTTY under adverse conditions, 2) it runs all sorts of other modes, including packet, MFSK and Hellschreiber. But, integration of MMTTY would go a long way towards keeping DX4WIN in the mainstream - it works fine for casual RTTY. It should come, probably, in version 7.0, while 6.4 will fix the accumulated problems we now face. Right? My latest problem came yesterday in the June VHF contest. Although I disabled my HF radio, since my VHF radio is not connected to DX4WIN, every time a spot came in it reset my mode and band info from SSB or CW, 6 or 2 meters, to whatever the latest spot was. Very inconvenient. John, K2CIB
[Dx4win] RTTY
To my knowledge it does not integrate with any sound-card based RTTY programs. I know you can import QSOs from WriteLog and many others, but not in real time. For casual QSOs, I use the RTTY window to drive my KAM in terminal mode. I've set up the PF macros to do useful things, almost the same as in the PSK window. Of course, I have to set the call and other info in DX4WIN manually. In a contest, that would slow me up considerably, so I use MixW, export ADIF, then import it to DX4WIN after the contest. Appendix E mentions the possibility of data sharing with other programs, and the methods used, but does not name any programs which are compatible. By far for the most part, it's a good update. Most of what I use of the new features is the LOTW interfacing features. A little confusing (as has been discussed on this reflector), but once you understand how to do it, not bad at all. The DXCC submission now allowing for DXCC challenge submissions is a plus, too. DX4Win is the best DX logging program out there. Other programs are slow (even making my Athlon XP 3000 box seem like it's struggling a bit), or are SO FULL of things to adjust (I don't want to have to spend an hour adjusting every font and every color on every window) or so full of features (digital voice keyers, beacon tracking, etc) that they skimp on basic stuff like DXCC awards submission or any sort of WAZ tracking at all. DX4Win is fast, it has easy to read windows, and it covers the needs of a logging program (data entry and reporting) very, very well. After saying all that, my suggestions 1) A better list of rotator directions for prefixes: For example. every time I enter a UA0 or UA9 call, DX4Win wants to rotate my beam to 353 degrees. Problem is, a ham in Asiatic Russia might be at a heading of anywhere from 325 to 25 degrees from here. A more detailed prefix list (UA9A, UA9K, UA0Z, UA0Y, etc, etc) would provide a better bearing for automatic rotator adjustment. 2) A date range and band filter on the Change Award Flags selection: DXCC cards submitted to Field Checkers can't include 160m cards or cards more than 10 years old. Being able to select these cards right from DX4Win would be a big help. 3) The ability to IMPORT from a CSV file: Sometimes, you just want to make changes to multiple items in your log that you know you just couldn't expect a logging program designer to think of. DX4Win can already export all fields to CSV. If it could RE-IMPORT those fields after you did whatever magic you had to in your favorite spreadsheet program, that would be sweet. 4) A seperate window for browsing the log than from entering data This is something I used to have in a previous program some years back, and I have gotten used to not having it. Still I miss not having to lose the current entry in my log window just because I want to do a search through my log to see what QSO's meet a certain critera. Thanks to all (including Paul) for listening to my suggestions. 73 de Lou AC0X ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win

I do not see timeouts but at times slow response in the DX4WIN program. I don't use the keyboard for sending CW but prefer to do it myself. However at times I do see some delay moving from item to item on the QSO window. My system is Window 98 running on a 400 Meg machine with 128 Meg of ram. The only other program running id DXTelnet and of course the usual Windows system stuff including Ethernet support. I hate to be picky but in a network or connectivity environment when something times out it cease to function. As I said in my first sentence I think we are seeing slow response from the operating system and possibly the DX4WIN program. Most logging programs were not originally written to support a 57.6Kb communications speed and my suspicion this is where the problem lies. Obviously the OS can handle 10Mb or 100Mb Ethernet connectivity but quite possibly the two in conjunction are causing the delays in the program. Just my thoughts! A friend who had just received an Orion has found difficulties with DX4WIN as follows: 1. Sometimes when sending CW from the DX4WIN keyboard, he sees long delays (1-2 seconds) before sending commences. It never stutters once it starts, but occasionally hesitates. 2. If he sets Retries to 1 on the poll setting, the radio times out almost immediately, even with 10 second polling intervals. If retries is set to 2, then it seems to operate OK - has anyone experienced timeouts with the Orion / DX4WIN? He has all the interface settings set at the TT specified values. [Dx4win] Spot Xfer/Vanish!?
This happens to me too. But, in my case, it is because my preferences are set to not display band/mode combinations which are already confirmed (even lower than gray). I'll see the spot in the spot window, but when it comes back from the PacketCluster, it disappears. Could this be the case here? Lately when I spot a DX station on the Packet window it comes up fine. BUT most times it does not go to the DX Spots by Time window. NOW, I have seen it go to the By Time window and then DISAPPEAR!! Honest! It had worked fine on KØMP cluster here in Metro Denver but KØMP shut down about 6 months ago. (Actually when KØMP was out of town he would shut down the backbone and then spots did not transfer. He did that so it would not hang up the system in case of trouble while he was gone.) I then joined N7US cluster which is in AZ. Jim, N7US and I discussed this problem and he says it is probably a DX4WIN anomaly. Jim said he checked his end and it looks fine. I am running DX4WIN Ver 4.05 with a WIN 98SE program. I have checked my preference settings and read the info on Packet in both my Ver. 1.11 and Ver. 4.0 manuals and did not see any references made to this problem. [Dx4win] Group Names
Happened to me too. Here is Paul's reply: John, Group names are part of the log. A way to loose the group names is to export a log, and import into a new one. When you have a log with group names in it, proceed as follows: 1. Keep backup information!! 2. Open the log with the groups in it. 3. Delete all QSOs in that log 4. Use the File | Import | Merge DX4WIN log to add your most recent log. 5. Save the log under a new name Paul It worked! They all came back. At 03:15 PM 9/1/03 -0400, you wrote: Paul, I don't know why, but none of my recent appends are being posted to the reflector. Please see if there is a way this can be fixed. This was one of my recent appends: While preparing to do a DXCC submission, I discovered I've lost all my Group definitions. And, if I search for a group number, it is not found in the database. I went back on saved logs and found that the one saved on 8/5/2003 has the info OK, newer ones do not. What happened? Is it because of moving to the new Country file? Did I do something wrong? What can I do to recover the lost groups? Where is the group info stored? I can't just merge the newer QSO records into the old file, because many QSLs were received and logged during August. [Dx4win] DX spot colors revisited
As others have said, I might want to swap 2 and 3, 4 and 5. So, it must be a preference setting. Also, I might not want to see even black spots, much less gray, so would want to hide them as I do the gray ones. All-time never worked has the highest priority. 2. When both entities are unworked or both entities are worked but not confirmed, mode has priority over band. 3. When one entity is unworked and the other is worked but not confirmed, the unworked entity has priority over the worked entity. The priorities I suggested earlier seem to embody these requirements: 1 = never worked 2 = never worked mode 3 = never worked band 4 = unconfirmed mode 5 = unconfirmed band Does this make sense to everyone? 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.com PGP Fingerprint: D8E2 3D78 339F A7F1 8C13 1193 B5D1 4FB6 79D1 70DC ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win
[Dx4win] Re: Spot Priorities
Re the previous append, I never look to work priority 6 or 7s. I was able to make the priority 6s black - but would not like to see them at all. I propose a numeric limit in the preferences above which spots will not appear. Or, allow all the priorities to have their color changed to gray, if desired (and so not shown via the preferences). Incidentally, I feel that not worked/confirmed on band is more important than mode - aren't the priority numbers wrong? John, K2CIB

[Dx4win] 6.0x Misc.
First, thank you, Paul, for making the best logging software better still. I know, having been a programmer, how difficult it is to get it all right. I am particularly pleased with the fixes for the mailed cutoff date, and set a filter when double click in the Country window. Looking over the list of enhancements over 5.03, I see many improvements for which I have waited! That said, here are two categories for your consideration: 1. Existing 6.02 problems (under Windows XP Home anyway) o PSK31 mouse double click still does not populate the QSO window fields properly (known bug) o If my packet, RTTY or rotator window fails to open (local problem with USB ports and RF), the next time I open DX4WIN those windows are all over the place, not where they belong. I have to re-set them. o The packet, and maybe RTTY, input area does not remember its size setting. It must be reset every time I open DX4WIN (already reported). o PF3 causes a large DOS box to appear before the callsign/lookup window appears when DX4WIN is opened with a shortcut. Changing the Startin folder does not help. If DX4WIN is opened directly from the .exe file, no DOS window appears. This problem has also been reported. o Re above, if I set Automatic Update, a search begins on the first character typed with no delay, which ties things up for a while and prevents me from completing typing the call 2. Wish List o Green-reverse spots when not confirmed even when the contact contributes to nothing (as discussed) o Ability to copy a few lines from the packet window so I can paste them into a manager's address window o Ability to customize fields and their sequence in the Same Call window (I would like to add QSL method, Label?, etc.) o See local time in the DX Sunrise/Sunset - Info window -- wasn't that there once? o Revert the map to 5.03 where I could see a highlighted country much more clearly o Double click on RTTY fields to populate QSO fields o Use gray for disabled modes/bands only. Use black for confirmed mode and band. Be able to ignore both. o Station worked as part of SWL card 73, John, K2CIB
