Re: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer?

2009-09-17 Thread Stan Staten
They will show up in the control panel and the port number can be changed
there to any other unused number so you can probably with a little fiddling
around get them all in sequence without skips. i.e. COM1,2,3,4 in a row. If
you have ever done this sort of thing in W98 you will come to like XP real
quick.

Subject: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer?

My trusty old Windows 98SE computer was destroyed by lightning.

I have pressed into service a reliable Windows XP Pro computer.
Since it only has 1 serial port, I installed a CyberPro PCI 4S which
contains 4 serial ports, 2 on a PCI board and 2 more on a bracket that
plugs into the PCI card.

The additional ports are labled serial 8 through 11.

How can I identify the extra serial ports so I can assign them in DX4Win
to rig control, Rigblaster and MMTTY?

I really don't want to plug serial ports in willy-nilly because I fear
breaking something.

I have a break-out box and may try jumpering serial pins 2 and 3 to see
if any lights blink but I'm hoping for another method.

Please help, _ really need Glorioso!

2009-09-17 Thread Larry Alkoff
Thanks very much for your most interesting post Pete.

Indeed I had a bunch of devices including duplicates of the CyberPro PCI
4S 4 port serial board. Apparently I made an error when installing the
board.

One good thing is I found a second serial header on the motherboard.

However I still have not gotten CAT to work.
I'm going to swap in my spare Mark V - perhaps the CAT port is bad.

I'll make a note of that clever devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 line.
It will probably come in handy in the future.

Jim thanks for the heads up on the many more com ports in DX4Win v8.
It would have saved me a lot of trouble but when I saw the business
of requiring Admin mode to install (and run?) and placing DX4W in the
root directory (both big nonos for me) I lost interest. Also I'm
running out of time to learn and convert data for DX4W 8.

This may be the situation where the low-numbered COM ports are being
reserved bydevices that are no longer present. Here's a replay of W5OV's
e-mail for checking and correcting that:

And for those who want to clear out those low number ports that don't need
to be cluttering up your Device Manager listing anymore, you can follow
  this
  process:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Run
  3. Type cmd.exe in the textbox and click OK
  4. Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and hit ENTER
  5. Type cd\windows\system32 and hit ENTER
  6. Type start devmgmt.msc and hit ENTER
  7. When the device manager opens, click the View menu
  8. Click Show Hidden Devices
  9. Click on the + sign next to the Ports to see the full list of Com ports
  being used.
  10. Highlight the port you wish to delete and then press delete. Accept
  when
asked to do so and continue with any more that you wish to delete.

When I viewed the com ports it showed 1,2,3 then 8,9,10,11.

Ports 2 and 3 do not exist but apparently something was once assigned to
 them.

They may be on your motherboard, with no access (cabling) to the
 bulkhead.

DX4Win only goes to 8 so I changed the port number in DX4Win to 8 and it
 started keying.

DX4WIN 8.0x supports up to 32 COM ports.

The same issue exists for DX4WIN 7.0x and the Vista/Windows 7
operating systems. The change in V8 is that by default, DX4WIN
installs at the root (i.e. C:\DX4W802) instead of in the Program Files
directory. Vista/Windows 7 do some strange things when data is in the
Program Files hierarchy.

Hi Jim.

Like so many others I'm going to keep running Windows XP as long as I
can. After that I'll probably just find some kind of Linux solution.

Re: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer?

2009-09-17 Thread Mel
Please don't mind me chiming in here... but

Installing the executables in the Program Files directory is fine... but
it is a bad choice for data... always has been!

You don't have to install in root. But there is absolutely no problem in
doing so. It is only installing one directory in root... and the
limitations on the number of files in the root directory disappeared
long long ago. There is no technical reason for it to be a nono.

What I have done here is create a Programs directory and install most
of my ham stuff there ie C:\Programs\DX... putting all the ham stuff
under one directory is tidier and I don't have to worry about write
restrictions on the Program Files hierarchy.
