Good Evening,
A tiny sunspot is fading and moving over the limb of the sun. SFU
is at 69 but it did get as high as 76 during the week. That is the
highest I have seen in months. Some solar wind has fed us ions so let's
take advantage of them. Hopefully the bands won't be too noisy
Many thanks to the many people who replied both on the reflector and privately,
with a great deal of thoughtful advice. I am now in the process of trying to
hire an electrician to come to my QTH – which is 18 miles one way from the
nearest town and almost 40 from the nearest city – whereupon I

Many desktops of recent vintage don’t truly go ‘off’ at shutdown. There are
mobo elements still powered (by the p/s), including USB.
To reset a ‘stuck bit’ the power cord must be unplugged then wait a time period
until the caps STILL holding power deplete (a LED on my Asus board goes out and
Ted,
I wonder if the load center panel is mounted on an exterior wall? If
so running a penetration from the panel to outside might be
better. Then you could route it in conduit or exterior cable routed
along exterior to a good spot to bring it back inside at the lower
level. That still

Reminds me of my first chain saw - I bought a demo, already assembled,
and it didn't cut for beans! Finally noticed the chain was on backwards.

Ted,
The routing of the 240 volt wiring is a discussion between you and the
electrician - but there is always "a way" - even if that means drilling
through concrete (not nice, but possible).
Unless the wiring route is short, take Jim Beown's (K9YC) advice about
conductor sizes. Large
Harv,
Have you set those antennas to Bypass using KAT500 Utility?
If you have done that, then you may need calibration on the KAT500
wattmeter.
If you have not set those antennas to bypass in KAT500 Utility, you are
likely to see what you are observing.

Ed,
I live in a 4 level split. Not a good situation for my knees and running power
lines.
I assume the breaker box is on an outside wall. Here is what I did .
I went outside.
My shack in on level three, half buried in soil. Ground level comes up to just
below the windows.

I've been noticing for some time now, that my KAT-500 bypass SWR seems
completely wrong. I have resonant antennas that on other meters and even on
my K3 have SWR's that are much lower. For instance, on 40M and 20M I have a
beam and a resonant dipole, both of which have bypass SWR's of close to
Thanks for the ideas, Mark. The remote software idea is interesting. There is
a 220 volt outlet already on the outside perimeter deck, which we had put in
for the possibility of someday having a hot tub out there – which we never did.

Use metallic or nonmetallic cable raceway to run the wire on the wall.
Its available in many different styles and colors

Placing both PS and amp where the 220 VAC outlet is accessible is possible; but
then I wouldn't be able to see the amp while operating, which I would like to
do. Wouldn't feel comfortable with a 1500 watt amp running way out of sight.
It would also then be in the kitchen on a floor above.
Historians, apparently, still argue over this issue. There exists at
least two letters in which Vail attributes the new code (replacing the
original all number code with corresponding dictionary) to Morse and not
himself. So, some historians put a lot of weigh on those references and

Great news Joe.
I'm glad you got it working.
There is nothing more frustrating having a problem, knowing there is a fix and
can't figure out how to solve the problem.

You’re correct. I removed the P3 and was able to load.
Thanks

Joe,
I had this very condition last night trying to download the latest firmware in
preparing for the arrival of the KPA1500 today.
Like you I tried the EE INit and no joy. I held the Shift/LO button tapped the
power button and it would always come back to a blinking red TX LED and MCU LD

I concur... Should have replied to the original post. Sorry.
OK... you NEED 240 in the shack, so if you are going to do it... and
you should, do it right.
Put a sub-panel in the basement and take at least a 60, preferably an
80+ Amp line from the main box to the sub-panel. Then hack out
John,
Yes, I would trust the KX3 more. The KXAT3 can match an SWR up to 10:1
- it is truly a wide range tuner.
Use a balun instead of the MFJ-971 to transition from coax to your twin
feeder doublet. A balun like the Elecraft BL2 provides a choice of 1:1
or 4:1 ratio.
Do not be mislead
Joe,
The blinking red TX LED is an indication of one of 2 conditions.
First is that the K3 is in TX TEST. Hold the right side of the MODE
button to exit from that.
The second is that the blinking TX LED is accompanied by an MCU LD
indication on the LCD.
If that is your situation, follow the

I would opt for bring the 220 line into the shack.
Ask your electrician about using a receptacle mounted flush on the
floor. You have likely seen them used in commercial buildings -
conference rooms and other places - the cover plate is usually brass

Hi all,
I have the infamous red blinking LED situation and can’t power up the K3S. I
simply opened the K3 utility and “badness” happened.
Anyhow, I tried the prescribed restart of disconnect power source, reboot
computer and holder power button for min 10 seconds. No success. Any other
Why not just use the amp as-is near the 220V outlet and run longer RF coax
cables to the amp from your operating position?

I would revisit running a 240 outlet into the shack. You would need very
large conductors to have the power supply that far away and laying these
wires on the floor would certainly not be aesthetically pleasing. It is
sometimes a bit of work and may require some drywall repair however I cannot
I picked up a nice used PX3 which has the Side KX end panels but the
unit did not come with the original end panels.

The KPA1500 Manual states that “the power supply can be operated remotely” and
that the supplied cables are 66 inches long. It does not say how far apart,
beyond the 66 inches, the PS and the amp can be without affecting performance
or creating other issues.
Does anyone know? There are
I was inspired by Wayne's announcement to setup outside on my back
porch. I decided that Morse code is Morse code independent of the key
and used a memory keyer and Vibroplex Iambic key.
The weather in Texas was wonderful!
Calling CQ resulted with several QSOs. It was a fun day.

I think that thinking in terms of skin depth, is causing a lot of the
confusion here. Skin depth is a consequence of how the fields
representing the electromagnetic pulse propagate in the electron plasma
of the metal, so is a secondary effect, not a primary one.
This whole thing is better

Just a query about the use of the MFJ 971 portable tuner with my KX3 (fitted
with automatic ATU)
The twin feeder from the doublet goes into the back of the MFJ which is then
attached via coax patch lead to the KX3
I can bypass the Auto ATU fitted on the KX3 menu and manually tune the MFJ
