OK, thanks, Don. As I said, I went into this perfectly happy with how
the K2 is performing. I have SN 6911 right beside it and find no
discernible difference between the two. Both are solid. I just wanted to
verify the alignment after 13 years of use and refamiliarize myself with
the internals.
Thanks. I did do this.
Appreciate the help remembering.

Chuck and all,
Sorry if I confused you. It is the firmware level, not the upgrades or
the board level.
Firmware 2.01 and above must do CAL PLL on 40 meters. That calibrates
it for all bands.
The early manuals tell you to do CAL PLL on each band, but if the

Chuck,
If you are referring to the X1/X2 situation rather then the CAL PLL
band, even the rev B boards have silkscreen and holes for X2, but X2 is
left open. The BFOMDKT and the Thermistor mod replace X1 and remove X2.
The basic A to B mods do not, but those mod kits are a part of the

So A to B upgrades but not necessarily the rev B board?

Your K2 has the A to B updates, do NOT put X2 in!
For Firmware level 2.01 and above, CAL PLL is done only on 40 meters
(for all bands). If attempted on other bands, you will get an INFO 232
error.

I have K2 SN 567. I didn't really have a problem with it, but I bought
it used in 2005, had W3FPR look at it then, and install latest mods to
bring it up to date. Today, I thought it might be time to take a look at
alignment, and freshen it up a bit.
When I did the "PLL Ref Osc Range Test" in
Don, I changed the setting to "Y," and it instantly jumped back on
frequency and everything is fine again. As always, I really appreciate
your expert and responsive help.

needs to be that way or CAL PLL will fail as you stated.
The initial frequency for CAL PLL is in the 12,960 to 12.990 range.
Your TP1 reading also says that the frequency the K2 is trying to tune
to is near 6350 kHz
On a K2, the freq display is way, way off; e.g., on 40 meters it's really
receiving about 0.5 mHz lower. I tried to run CAL PLL but get INFO 232.
The PLL process appears to start, momentarily displaying 11,27164 mHZ,
then aborts in about a second with the INFO 232 error. I'm absolutely

From the Elecraft website www.elecraft.com, order K2FWMCIO - see the
Order page and then Spare Parts, and then select K2 on the page which opens.
Be aware that you must have the updated wiring on the Control Board for
the sidetone source.
If you have the KPA100 or the KIO2 installed,

Go to the Elecraft website and download the K2 A to B instructions. That
contains a list of related mods.
You may want to also download the instructions for those mods as well.
Review those instructions against your physical K2 to see if they have
been installed.

The RIT had moved to one end (+1) instead of being at 0-position.
Now the CAL PLL works.

Hello there
Name here is Peder, SM0GNS.

Gene,
An INFO 080 message is caused by a problem on the AUXBUS signal, so pay
particular attention to the DB-9 connector pin 6 in the cable. It might
be a good idea to open the backshells to see if there is a wire whisker
from pin 6 to any other pin, or a broken wire on pin 6.

All,
Trying to get my K2/100/KAT-100 operation with N1MM.
Bought the Elecraft USB-Serial adapter. Installed the
driver from the FTDI web site. Seems to be operational.
Connected the cable to the computer (device found, etc).
Connected the other end to the radio/antenna tuner serial

Jason,
During CAL PLL, Error 232 means that the firmware is not properly
reading the frequency. Aside from the obvious solutions of not being on
40 meters, and forgetting to connect the counter probe to TP1, It could
be an indication that the counter probe is not working properly, or not

You're right, most of the failures I've had with projects have been from

Well, knowing Greg and the quality of his workmanship, I'd doubt that
bad soldering is the problem. Also, his rf test bench is probably on the
same level of, say, Ron's.
Searching the web didn't show us much info on "Info 090". Too bad it
wasn't "Info 80".

Greg,

Before you start ripping things out or suspecting bad components, remember
that the design does work (and works very well), and that components rarely
fail.

At power up, relays click for a short period, and the display says INFO
