[Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
I´m currently using a pair of old TV-speakers and I´m still looking for good speakers.I´ve found the Dierking 40w speakers(http://www.eurofrequence.de/lautsprecher/)in the internet. Is anybody using them with the K3? Are they good? Re: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
Good morning Chris - I do not have direct experience with the speakers mentioned in your post, but I use a pair of JBL Control 2 powered studio monitors. They are very accurate and, perhaps most importantly, do not seem to radiate detectable RF (or be susceptible to it). http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/general/ProductFamily.aspx?FId=64MId=5 73, Mike Alexander - N8MSA amsct...@comcast.net - Original Message - From: OE5CSP-Chris hans-christ...@gmx.at To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2012 3:00:29 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3 I´m currently using a pair of old TV-speakers and I´m still looking for good speakers.I´ve found the Dierking 40w speakers(http://www.eurofrequence.de/lautsprecher/)in the internet. Is anybody using them with the K3? Remember folks, there's a spreadsheet tracking the orders. If you put in your information, you can help others and yourself find out where you stand in the stack. As of today, there's been 23 factory build units delivered with 15 in transit or ready to ship. That is only the first 34 minutes of orders and doesn't count a single kit since none have shipped. http://goo.gl/hqRqD TJ W0EA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Uploading Firmware (again) [was K3-Data mode RTTY]
microHAM keyer interfaces (CW Keyer, Digikeyer, DigiKeyer II, microKEYER, microKEYER II, and MK2R/MK2R+) as well as Station Master and Station Master Deluxe *do not support* firmware uploading in *any* transceiver. It *may* be possible to upload to the K3 by setting Router's Radio option to no radio (mode selected manually) and powering the keyer from a dedicated supply. However, microHAM recommends using a true RS-232 port or KUSB and accepts no responsibility if the keyer is used for uploading firmware. I use RS-232 switches and a real serial port for updating all of my Elecraft equipment. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
Hello Chris, I do not have any experience with the speakers you mentioned. Hopefully another person will have information for you. The JBL speakers that Mike mentioned are indeed excellent. I first learned about them when they were recommended to me by Bob Heil. If you use a pair of them you can take advantage of the K3's various audio effects. Regardless of the specific brand and model, a quality set of speakers (or headphones) preserves the fidelity of the audio from the rig to help dig that rare one out of the pile or QRM. Re: [Elecraft] [XV222] Ease of assembly?
Somewhat related to this question. Will the Elecraft line of transverters work with other brands/makes/models of radios? Specifically, I have an Icom (seriously considering an Elecraft in the near future though) that is an HF/VHF/UHF all mode radio but does not include the 222 MHz band. There is some limited activity on that band locally and I would like to try operating there if possible. Thanks in advance. I suppose this question pertains to any of the XV-series transverters. I understand that there are no SMT parts to install; only through-hole components. How long should the assembly/alignment/testing take? I've been assembling kits since the Heathkit days. This looks like an excellent way to get on 222 MHz, although I'm a bit on the fence. I would need to buy the transverter interface module for the K3, so we're looking at almost $500 without an antenna for this band. As I understand it, there is little activity on SSB on 222 MHz except in contests, which is surprising given the population of the greater LA/OC area. At the SCCC meeting in September, our Division Director and Vice Director said that it wasn't this way 10 years ago. Any help with my original question will be greatly appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] No power out in OPER mode
Guessing is always just guessing. At least one KPA500 has operated flawlessly and nightly since its purchase as a kit more than a year ago. Most recently it performed perfectly for 48 continuous hours at Titanic Special Event Station WØS in Branson, Missouri. On my desk or in the field, it has /never /failed to function as designed. On a different but related subject . . . I would strongly encourage those not physically handicapped to purchase their Elecraft equipment in kit-form. Frankly, I trust my own skills a lot more than I trust a cadre of strangers hired for that particular purpose, no matter how proficient they might be. For significant dollars spent, I want the knowledge and experience acquired in putting that kit together to end up in MY brain, not the brain of someone else. Elecraft has several low-cost, useful, high-performance kits available, both soldered and non-soldered, to help anyone gain self-confidence. The Heath Company inspired and educated a whole generation of today's finest electronic minds. What a shame to have those same opportunities available and not take advantage of them, even if it's only a hobby for us. Instant gratification comes with a price, and I fear the next greatest generation is growing up outside our borders. My opinion only . . . 73, Kent Trimble, K9ZTV Jefferson City, MO On 4/17/2012 7:37 AM, someone wrote: My KPA500 exhibits the same problem at times, don't know why. [Elecraft] [KPA500] No power out in OPER mode
Larry If you use ALC between your KPA500 and your transceiver, check to see if there is a permanent output from the KPA500. U8 on the KPA500 control board is a known issue where the wrong part was specified up to at least serial 573 (mine)... The fix is to obtain the correct part and replace it. This is not a common problem. Reports are few and far between. But, if and when you do see a problem of this sort, please send a very detailed report so that we can try to figure out what is going on and correct it if we are able. It might be something in the amplifier, something in your environment or some combination. So when it happens, please let us know, along with all the details. Re: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
I'm using the Inland ProSound 2000 multimedia speaker system. AC cable, no wall wart. Signal connector is mini-phone and fits the I/O firmly. [Elecraft] P3, Remote Viewing via the Internet
I've been interested in remote control of my station for about ten years now and have experimented with just about every method there is between Seattle Hawaii. Now that remote controlling the K3 is easy with the RemoteRig device and the new Elecraft firmware, I’m headed down that path. However, the current state of most devices makes remote viewing of my P3 pan adapter a challenge and Elecraft has not addressed this as yet. After experiencing the value of a P3 for the last year I miss it terribly when I’m at my remote location. To date it has been difficult for me to view most waterfall displays remotely due to the high bandwidth requirements of the ever changing picture. I’ve tried remote viewing of many PSK-31 displays with poor results. The bottleneck is usually the low upload speed of my consumer Internet circuits which are cable at one end and DSL at the other. Their upload speeds are 1-megabit or less and remote control programs such as Microsoft's Remote Desktop, PC-Anywhere and VNC just don't compress the video enough for a satisfying result and it locks things up waiting for each new frame of video. However, MPEG4 does a nice job of transmitting my local news in standard definition NTSC at about 500 kilobits/sec. So, I’m going to try that method for my P3. I haven't tried this yet but I'm gathering the parts for the experiment and I should know more after I visit my P3 at the remote location and wire things up. Unfortunately that won’t be for over a month and this is not of interest to my adult children who are there to kick most other things when needed. If anyone else wants to try this before I do, I’d be very interested in your results. I have an old Slingbox Classic that I use to send local, over-the-air television to Hawaii so that I can watch the local Seattle news from here. This unit accepts video via an RCA or S-Video connection as well as having an NTSC tuner. They don’t offer this older unit any longer but their newer offerings include the PRO PRO-HD models which have either no tuner or, in the HD version, an NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner. SlingMedia.com claims a 400% improvement in video for these newer offerings over what my classic produces. I’ve found an $18 device at Amazon.com (Kanaan PC VGA to TV Composite Video RGB Converter) which claims that it will convert RGB video to S-Video. There are other converters listed so be careful that you get one that will accept video in a resolution that the P3s SVGA card will produce. I’ve chosen 1280 x 1024. This unit should accept the output of the P3’s SVGA card and convert it to S-Video ready for the Slingbox. The SlingBox should then send it over the Internet to my remote location using MPEG4 compression and be ready for viewing on my PC using the SlingBox player that came with my classic unit. The main unknown right now is the latency of the video buffer and how that might impact operating. This arrangement will not allow me to control the P3 remotely but viewing the P3 is primary while control is secondary to me for now. I don’t see why this shouldn’t work but until I can try it I will be looking for comments on how I might do this using any other method someone might be willing to share. They appear to be in stock in most stores in this area. The KLH versions are no longer listed on-line. However, there are a large number of small bookshelf speakers - often marketed as satellite speakers for home theater systems - available for ca. $40/pair from many sources. A few months ago I picked up a few surplus communications speakers (about 70 mm x 60 mm x 35 mm) from cellphone handsfree kits for around $5 each. Re: [Elecraft] SSB QRP
Hi Ron, If an SSB station is strong, it's likely they'll hear you with lower power. Consider an S-9 SSB signal with low band noise, from a station running 100 W. If you're running 10 W, you'll probably be somewhere between S-7 and S-8 at their end. A good antenna at either end helps both stations. My favorite SSB band for local purposes is 40 m, and for DX, 17 m, 15 m, and 10 m. I routinely use a K3 or KX3 at 10 to 12 W on SSB. The antenna I use most often is a 50' random wire, fed roughly in the middle with 300-ohm twinlead, an Elecraft BL2 balun in the shack, and a short piece of coax to the rig. I then use the ATU in the rig to match this antenna on 160-6 meters. Despite this modest antenna, my SSB results have been excellent. 73, Wayne N6KR On Apr 17, 2012, at 12:43 PM, ron wrote: I realize many here are in the QRO group as evident by K3 mail (smile) but here's to hoping there are some QRP'ers in the mix. This inspired me to make a few contacts this morning on 15M With one CQ I was able to work 9 EU stations and one State side, All with 5 Watts and a 3 ele yagi. Most of the stations were running 20 to 30 watts except for N1QN He was running 1 watt into a longwire. Re: [Elecraft] SSB QRP
Ron, Admittedly, I'm mostly a cw op, and really only operate during the summers, but nearly every time I've decided to scare up a contact, I've succeeded. A few weeks back, I was sitting in a friend's van waiting for him to do something in the house and had a nice 2m FM simplex contact over about 50 miles on 20w -- just had to call CQ 4-5 times. A few months earlier, I was playing with an MFJ 40m ssb adventure radio (stock mike, radio's built in compression), and had a nice chat with a fellow in Texas from my Washington QTH at ~10w. My antenna was a trap dipole on the roof at about 30'. It probably took 20 minutes of listening and tuning around between other tasks until I found a conversation; as it was winding down, I gave a call and we were off! My club operates Field Day QRP, and I used to take the Sunday morning 20m SSB slot with great success. Rig is a K2 with a Heil #4 element; the antenna is typically a hamstick dipole up 15'. Dunno if I was using any compression. From my experiences, the challenge is usually in getting the conversation started. I don't know how much of a practical difference QRO makes when calling CQ, but once you find someone to talk to, power doesn't seemed to be much of a problem :). The other thing I can say is that technique and awareness of what things might be like at the other end is important. I generally give my call three times for both cw and phone, and on phone, I usually use the phonetics twice and the third time use just the letters, but keep them well separated (on CW, I tend to send the call at different speeds, both for intelligibility and as a hint to the other op that I'm happy to work across the range). When I'm talking to the other person, I automatically repeat key words, figures, and any word that isn't part of casual conversation, and keep the exchanges short so the other person can immediately report lost words and changing conditions. Habits that make communication easy in spite of power or conditions keeps it fun for everyone. -kb7psg. Re: [Elecraft] P3, Remote Viewing via the Internet
I took the lazy way out. I'm using HRD and a spare laptop in the shack, attached to the K3/P3, using remote login and Skype for audio. When I know I'm going to be remote (I'm QRV in San Diego now) I set the web cam to view both the K3 and P3 displays. I then use Skype video to 'see' the displays and can zoom and pan as needed. I don't have control access of the monitor (unless I run a macro from the P3 utility) and it requires bandwidth but this simple and clunky lashup actually works. If the bandwidth is limited, I remotely login, 'answer' my call with audio only and keep the HRD bandwidth low. So system (and rig/license) security requires that you're on the allowed list of logins for remote desktop (just me); that you're on my Skype list (very few) AND have the HRD remote login info (again, just me). So far, so good. Ok, so a little off topic, but got to tell you about the time I was getting on 2M SSB. I worked real hard at building up a 25 w SSB station. Re: [Elecraft] head mounted lens or magnifier for SMT projects
Bob, Do not scrimp on this particular item. Yes, there are less expensive alternatives than Optivisor, but some have plastic lenses that are not totally clear - buy quality, your eyes will appreciate it. I have one that has a working length of about 10 inches (OK for soldering without burning your nose), but a flip-up lens that brings that working length down to the 4 inch region for examination. There is also a flip-down loupe that focuses at about 2 inches for even more magnification. The combination is quite useful. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/17/2012 8:54 PM, Robert Duckworth wrote: Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations for one of those binocular, head mounted, magnifiers to improve my SMT work. Re: [Elecraft] head mounted lens or magnifier for SMT projects
I've been using the cheap head magnifiers (typically $5-7) for years and am pretty happy with them. If you go to mcmelectronics.com and type in magnifier in the search box, you'll find a range of quality and prices. The one I use is the $6.99 one. I remove the 2 lights and battery holders to make the headset lighter and use a bench mounted lamp for illumination. The ulitimate is a Bauch Lomb or Sciencscope 7x-35x binocular zoom microscope. I use these at work and they're very good. But they run $125 - $350 used on that auction site. 73 GL, Lenny W2BVH On 4/17/2012 8:54 PM, Robert Duckworth wrote: Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations for one of those binocular, head mounted, magnifiers to improve my SMT work. Re: [Elecraft] SSB QRP
Just remember that in the 1950's, as the use of SSB grew rapidly, a typical SSB rig ran 10 or 20 watts PEP. That was equivalent in talk power to a 100 watt A.M. rig, and the bulk of the A.M. rigs of the day only ran 50 watts or so output (back the power was measured as D.C. input to the final tube. Figure perhaps 75 percent efficiency max). Yes, we had the rock crushers and California kilowatts(who bragged about running a kilowatt input to the driver stage and they didn't discuss on the air what the finals were running) but they were in the extreme minority on the phone and CW bands. If you operate your 10 or 20 watt PEP SSB rig just like it was a 100 watt rig, you'll make a lot of QSOs just like any QRO station. Over the years I have run into some Hams who say If you aren't running at least 100 watts, you aren't worth a QSO but they are so mired in their narrow beliefs that they can't have fun anyway. And they are in the minority. Unless I'm looking for another QRP station to work, I avoid calling CQ/QRP. Frankly, it says to a lot of operators that if they are not QRP, you don't want to talk to them. If you are looking specifically for fellow SSB QRP operators, here are some frequencies to check out (all in kHz): 3985 7286 14285 18130 21285 (Europeans) 21385 24956 28300 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I realize many here are in the QRO group as evident by K3 mail (smile) but here's to hoping there are some QRP'ers in the mix. If you are relying on the BFO frequency settings listed in the KSB2 manual, be advised that there is a better way -- go to my webpage www.w3fpr.com article on K2 Dial Calibration and go to page 3 which deals with the filter settings. Use Spectrogram to give you a visual indication of the filter placement. Note that recent K2s will have wide filter widths that are much wider than indicated i\on the K2 display -- use Spectrogram to indicate the actual filter width. Spectrogram version 5.17 and Spectrogram version 16 may be downloaded from my website, Both have been seving my needs for a long time and should be free of problems (there have been reports of bad downloads of version 16). 73, Don W3FPR On 4/16/2012 10:28 PM, Earl Richardet wrote: Hello to the Reflector, I've recently completed building my Elecraft K2 transceiver and I have one problem that I would like to resolve. Up to the point where I installed the SSB kit into the radio, the audio level on each of the filter selections was strong and working fine. After I installed the SSB kit, the audio level on the CQ filters dropped off significantly. The OP1 SSB filters are working great and have strong audio output, but as soon as I select FL3 or FL4 the audio drops way off. Otherwise the SSB board is working fine and I great audio reports from other stations on my transmit audio. At this point I have confirmed all the components on the SSB, no bridges or splatter that I can see. Everything appears to be ok. Don't know where to start troubleshooting this issue. Appreciate any suggestions on troubleshooting or if anyone has experienced this themselves and of course what you did to resolve. Ron, There is also the HFPack group; http://hfpack.com They aren't all QRP Ops, but they welcome low power and portable operators. Re: [Elecraft] head mounted lens or magnifier for SMT projects
A little bit different but you can get good magnification by mounting a webcam above the work piece and viewing it on a screen. 73 John ZL1BYZ. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Robert Duckworth Sent: Wednesday, 18 April 2012 12:55 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] head mounted lens or magnifier for SMT projects Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations for one of those binocular, head mounted, magnifiers to improve my SMT work. Re: [Elecraft] Loudspeakers for the K3
On 4/17/2012 12:00 AM, OE5CSP-Chris wrote: Is there a recommendation from Elecraft or any wise audiophile? As an audio pro, I have a few observations. The speaker amp in the K3 is a fairly small one, so outboard speakers should be either fairly efficient or should be amplified. Most home stereo speakers have fairly LOW efficiency, but most speakers for use in public address systems, and most speakers designed for communications use have fairly HIGH efficiency. For most serious operation I use headphones, but for casual operation I use outboard speakers. On the radio I use the most, they are a pair of very efficient, very good pro speakers that have long been discontinued. On the other radio I have a couple of miniature cube speakers designed for communications use. They all work fine. Voltage sensitivity is expressed as dBSPL for one watt at one meter, or for 2.828 volts. The most efficient small speakers you're likely to find will have this spec in the high 80s. SPL is Sound Pressure Level with respect a standard acoustic reference level. In the near field, sound decays at 6dB per doubling of distance, so at 1/4 meter, it will be 12dB louder than that number with a one watt sine wave, about 10 dB less with speech. 73, Jim Brown K9YC. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
