[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2022-06-12 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The sun has come out.  That has been rare lately.  A few minutes
earlier today followed by rain.  From the Bay Area to Idaho it's cool
and misty.  Out on the Plains I got reports of 90 degrees.  Summer may
be there but the dry season is not yet here.

Propagation was OK to poor.  ESP one moment to a solid 339 the next
:)  Lots of noise.  The sun reports are quiet so it must be from some
other star.  I never thought I would miss the blank sun.

GEEK WARNING

I read many suggestions for logging software for Linux, Windows, and
for Macintosh operating systems.  CQRlog runs natively under Linux and
is vetted as part of the System76 ecosystem of tools.  It also is highly
rated by those who use it. That is good for option one.  However, it
does modify my operating environment by adding database and
supplementary libraries.

Option two is easy since I already have Virtual Box installed.  I
will clone one of my Win7 virtual machines and install N1MM's
application.  That gives me a clean installation without modifying my
working environment.  When I am done with the VM I can move it to a
server so the drive space on my laptop is freed up.

I plan to try both to see which fits me better.  I may also leave
the database (mySQL) on the box for other purposes.  I like to keep my
laptops very free of clutter so I can clone one to the other, or to a
back up file on the server quickly.

Re: [Elecraft] Options for contest logging software under Linux

2022-06-12 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Kevin;

I’m curious, why do you wish to run N1MM Logger? It is a very good contest
logger, but for general purpose logging there are better choices.
As for running it under virtualization, I ran it using Virtual Box (on the Mac)
until I had a really good reason to use VMware Fusion - that was when
I joined the Fusion development team. I’m no longer with VMware, and rarely use
N1MM (except for Field Day while I was in CA). But, when
I need it, it still runs great in Fusion.

So, if you need it, go ahead and try it with Virtual Box. I think you will be
happy with it. If you are looking for a general-purpose logger, then search for
one of the several that are available for linux.

Jack, W6FB

Re: [Elecraft] Mac Logging Software

2022-06-12 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Ah, but Kevin, this topic is for Mac logging… I will agree that SkookumLogger
is really good for contesting. I don’t think I would use it for general
logging, though.

I’ll ask my question of Kevin in his topic… ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] Options for contest logging software under Linux

2022-06-12 Thread Brian Hunt
Kevin,
For option 3 you might take a look at the groups.io linuxhams. A quick search
there unearthed xlog. Don’t know anything about it but the write up says
general and contest logging.

Dual booting the computer you want to use for contesting could be option 4. 

SkookumLogger is my #1 logger on a Mac. The source code is available -
so you can add your own features (I added a Voice Player for example as my K3S

RumLog is a good all-round logger also, easy to configure to work with

Re: [Elecraft] Options for contest logging software under Linux

2022-06-12 Thread David Herring
Kevin,

Windows VM on Virtual Box would be a slam dunk, but that does take up a lot of
your computer’s resources. But, once it’s installed and windows is running,
N1MM and most all other windows apps will run FB and not know the difference.

If you are leaning toward a wine solution, you may consider using Crossover
rather than straight up wine. Crossover is a commercial-off-the-shelf wine
package and it has a cost, but I think it has a free trial period so you can
test to see if works for you. Because it is more of a commercial endeavor so
many things are better supported. N1MM is on the listed of supported apps in
Crossover, though full disclosure I have not actually tried it. I do run a
number of other windows apps in it just fine. codeweavers.com

Just an idea…

Before ham radio I collected a lot of things as a youth. Stamps were one
of the things I collected, and I was frequently purchasing packets of stamps
from companies I saw advertising in various magazines. This was kind of a
neighborhood thing, as several of us all did the same thing. Perhaps the
strangest thing we collected was a list of license plate numbers of out of
state cars passing through our little town of Bend, Oregon. The ultimate
objective was to hopefully have at least one identified plate from every
state! I came close!! It's ironic how similar this process is to
WAS-Delaware was one of the few states I never documented!

In my case, collecting became an early obsession in my ham radio life. I
was licensed at 13, and had managed to accumulate enough paper route money
to purchase a BC-348 receiver. However, initially I had no transmitter. My
two "Elmers" were quite aware of this problem, and at one of our local ham
club meetings they announced that they were going to donate all the
necessary parts, and expertise, allowing me to construct my own
transmitter-with considerable assistance from them!! That process included
making a chassis from sheet aluminum and winding a home made power
transformer large enough to power an 807! The whole process, from the time
my Elmer scribbled out a schematic on paper to completion, took about 10
days or so. One of my Elmers (W7GNJ) owned a bike shop (where the
construction process took place), and it's amazing how many parts he had
tucked away in corners and boxes there!

There was a "hitch" to this gift. My Elmers wanted to make sure that I
became reasonably competent as a CW op. So, they put a price on this gift.
I had to collect 150 QSL cards, signifying CW contacts, before I could fully
claim actual ownership of the transmitter!

The process took several months and 2 or 3 batches of QSL cards purchased
from either Walter Ashe or World Radio Labs (100 for $1)! Not everyone was
willing (or able) to exchange cards. Completing that requirement was more
rewarding to me than just about any other "certificate" I've ever gotten.
Also, I think I can say I did become reasonably competent at CW. At least
competent enough to be invited to become an NCS on the Oregon State CW Net.
I've been a 95% CW op ever since!

[Elecraft] Options for contest logging software under Linux

2022-06-12 Thread kevin
I run versions of Linux on five of my computers.  I would like to
implement N1MM's logging software on one of them.  It appears I have
three options:

1) Install N1MM directly and use wine to run it.

2) Install N1MM in a Windows 7 virtual machine under Virtual Box.

3) Use another logging application specific to Linux.

For option 1 I found this link describing the installation and support
methods -

https://www.nf8m.com/nf8m/n1mm-on-linux/

Does anyone have any other links for this option?

Option 2.  Has anyone tried using N1MM's app using Virtual Box? I am
more comfortable with it than I am with using winetricks.  I have
modified com port status under Virtual Box for some of the applications
I write.  It is involved but I have already done the homework.

Option 3 - does anyone know of good logging applications for Linux?

Or the option I have not listed: logging on paper which is my normal
method.

Any information, opinions, or options I have not covered?

[Elecraft] KX3/KPA100/Powerwerx Revisited

2022-06-12 Thread Jim Ruff via Elecraft
Thanks everyone for your quick responses.  So far, none of the suggested
solutions have worked, so I hooked the KPA100 up to a different power supply,
an Alinco DM-330MV, and I had the same whirling noise, only not quite as loud.

This leads me to believe that something in the KPA100 is causing some kind of
line noise to the power supply.  Is there a fix for this?  If not, the noise
doesn't really bother me, but is this noise affecting my signal when I TX?
That is my real concern and I should have made that clearer in my first email.
Thanks,Jim W7JHR

Re: [Elecraft] Mac Logging Software

2022-06-12 Thread Kevin McQuiggin
Hi Richard:

I will second Rich Lim’s positive comments re MacLoggerDX (MLDX). I’ve been
using it for several years now. It is a fantastic logging application with
full LoTW/QRZ/eQSL/etc upload integration. It also tracks
grids/states/DXCC/zones etc and tracks award eligibility. It does spots, has
an interactive map, and has many other features.

User support is top notch, as Rich noted. Don VE3VRW (the developer) also
accepts good suggestions from the user base and incorporates them into beta
releases, and then eventually into the production releases, which come out 3-5
times a year.

MLDX also integrates easily with “GridTracker”, a free MacOS application that
displays grid squares and QSOs that your radio is hearing in real time. This
is actually more valuable info that what pskreporter reports, as
MLDX/GridTracker is displaying the stations you are actually receiving.

Another option is MacLoggerDX (MLDX). It is a paid application but works
beautifully well. It is full featured and has lots of bells and whistles, some
which I thought I wouldn’t need or use, but having them opened my eyes to the
possibility. For example, I use MLDX as my main Mac logging program and when I
run WSJTx it will receive broadcast QSO info from WSJTx and log it directly
into my main database. It has a telnet application to spot dx and if you like
it can qsy you to that station with a mouse click. It’s again one of those
things you don’t know you need or want until you try it. It integrates w LoTW,

queries often in a few minutes after you send an email. It’s worth a look.

Re: [Elecraft] Mac Logging Software

2022-06-12 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I've been using RUMlogNG for years, and it's worked beautifully for me, and
it's well-maintained. It integrateswith LoTW beautifully, as well as other
databases. There are numerous rig control features available that Idon't
personally use, since I tend to use WSJT-X or JTDX, and it does cooperate with
those two programs sothat when you finish a QSO, the data is sent from them to
RUMlogNG and is plopped into my log automatically. For example, it will track
the frequency data from a K3 or K4D, and some ops use it to directly key it on
CW.For manual (i.e., non-digital) modes, QSO entry is simple, straightforward
and intuitive.

It's available directly from the AppStore or you can go to DL2RUM's website
directly, and is free.

I also use it for contest logging - there is a pull-down menu that sets up a
separate logging interface configuredfor the specific contest you're working,
to present real-time scores, missing multipliers, etc.

The formatting of this e-mail may've been messed up by Yahoo, and should not
reflect on the value of RUMlogNG :-)

HTH, and 73,

Brandy, N1HO (EL96xh)
