I have recent experience with a KX1 in a similar but less severe valley:
I operated recently from 3 spots in Yosemite:
- down in the valley (KX1, RX only)
- atop an 8000' granite dome with 2 wires on the ground (KX1, one
contact in 15 minutes)
- just south of the park in a forested area at

No only that but you can have complete remote control over your K2 station.

Mike, About 15yrs ago I BPed the Tonto plateau w/friend and drug a QRP

Hi Don and everyone else,
The ability of software such as HRD to control a K2 is what gave me the
idea for a hardware front panel extension that would interface through a KIO2.
While a hardware front panel extension wouldn't have all of the capabilities
and flexibility of HRD, the goal
I haven't been able to get on the air much in the last year, but I found a way
around it - a 40m hamstick on the car with my K2 at 10 Watts (I figure it's QRP

evening. Just about everytime I've gotten on the air, I've managed

When I try the 4 mHz Oscillator Calibration I get a reading of 8800 to 8900

to look? The manual says it may be a PLL Reference Oscillator

There are potential issues with using any type of mixer besides the
present SA612 in the KX1.
First is PCB space. The present mixer, which requires nearly no
additional parts, barely fits. I seriously doubt that there would be

I have noticed a few posts wherein people have expressed some reservation about

Remember, the KIO2 does not use an RS-232 cable! The KIO2 requires a special
cable for computer control.

I'm not sure this is the same noise you are hearing...
While the display on my KX1 is lit, I hear a static like noise.
Reducing the brightness of the display to about half cuts

Tom Hammond has great instructions on the use of Spectrogram to align

Engineering isn't science per se, it is really the art of trade-off
management in the real world. Success is not perfection of the design
in every aspect, but rather perfection of the trade-offs to best meet
the goals. I really like my KX1. I wish it had more audio, my hearing
