Hi Don and everyone.
It does seem that calibrating a wattmeter is a hard thing to do if you don't
have an office at NIST! When I care about accuracy, I measure RF voltage
with the Elecraft DL1 and hope for the best.
Suppose you have a good DC standard, such as Don's or Joe Geller's designs.

Hi group,
Yesterday I downloaded the KPA100 manual and found that in REV .D there is a
R40 resistor of 22k.
Does anybody know what the exact purpose of this Resistor is for?
At the moment I am building KPA100 REV C. , should I also implement this
resistor.

Roger,
Check the schematic and you will see why (you should not install only a part
of a mod):
If you are not installing ALL the changes for Rev D, then do NOT install
R40.
OTOH, if you have ordered all the parts to build your KPA100 as Rev D, then
yes, install it as instructed in the Rev D
Johnny,
To sweep the LPF in the K2 with an antenna analyzer, you must terminate the
LPF with a 50 ohm resistor (51 ohms is a close enough standard value).
Terminating the LPF is easy if you have the K160RX header installed - simply
put the resistor leads between pins 7 and 2 of the K160RX header.
Measuring power is not as easy as one might think. The lab where I had
my HP-436A calibrated told me they thought it would be safe to advertise
an LP-100 calibrated against it at 0.1 dB accuracy. That works out to
~2.3%. If I recall correctly, their reference had a certificate that

Hi All,
Had to respond to Tom, N0SS's post. We were both licensed in '58 (not

Ken (and others interested),
The DL1 has a formula in its manual that considers the diode forward
voltage. You can use that to achieve accuracy if you are using a DL1. You
can include similar terms in your measurements and calculations if you are
using an alternative. Apply Ohm's law for power
Hi Bob,
For your information your spelling of Canadian Provinces is incorrect,
it is NOT Providences.

Thanks Bob,
Didn't catch the typo or brain to keyboard

Hi Lou,
That's probably for the best. I have to say if the YL knew I was even
entertaining the idea of the KPA1500 before Christmas. I don't think I would
be able to afford the the divorce attorney and child support. I'd never get the
amp then. Especially after buying the K2 options I

Yes they are. yes and yes and for price not sure but I'm sure as nice as they
look and probably preform, they can't be cheap.

There is a photo of the KPA1500 on Elecraft's website under NEWS tab

The formula given in my DL1 manual is not correct, in my view. The lower the
power, the more incorrect it becomes.

Hello all,
Well I went out and tried to buy one 4.7 ohm and one 33 ohm resistor,
but the minimum they would sell me was a pack of 50ea. So I now have 49
extra 4.7-ohm 1/4w resistors and 49 extra 33-ohm 1/4w carbon resistors.
If any KX1 owner wants more power output from your KX1, I'll send you

Ed,
Yes, the formula in the DL1 manual is off a bit - there was some discussion
about that on the reflector about 6 months ago.
As I calculate, the correct formula is P(watts)=(1.414(V(volts)+0.15))^2/50
Or easier expressed as P=2(V+0.15)^2/50 (I am not certain why the square
root of 2 (1.414)

You can also fine tune the formula based on DC measurement of the

Should my 1W, 2W, and 3W resistors on my KPA100 be mounted pressed against the

ED,
I understand that you have had trouble operating your KX1 in cold
temperature. I just wanted to let you know that I have operated my KX1 in much
colder temperatures that + 20 degrees F. Last night I left my KX1 out all
night and it was below zero degrees F. This morning by the time I
