[Elecraft] [K2] Current setting?

2009-03-12 Thread Mike-WE0H
What should I have my Current setting set at? I see it occasionally
showing high current when running SSB on the bench into a 50 ohm load.
Is this some sort of current limiting setting for the power amp? It was
set at 2.x amps and I set it to ~3.5a tonight and noticed the 160m power
shot up to 10w on the Bird meter after that. Before moving the current
setting up, it would show maybe 2-5w output just talking into the mic. I
run the compression at 2:1 and the other setting at 3. I think I am
saying that right but I am a newbie to this rig so...hi hi...
Also using a Kenwood MC-43S mic. The audio sounds clean listening on a
TS-440 on all bands 160 thru 10m, skipping 30m of course...

Thanks much,
Mike

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Time Keeper v0.1

2009-03-12 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
David, it works very well here on my Mac.
It does require I use my KUSB and not my microHAM DIGIkeyer - it
doesn't understand the D/K serial port.

However, how about incorporating this into the K3 utility, so we can
set the clock whenever we do a firmware upgrade. OK, that's not as
often as perhaps running K3 Time Keeper, but for those of us that just
want to keep the K3 clock close to real time, that works and saves me
remembering to run K3 Time Keeper when I do switch to the KUSB for
updates. And for others, they can use K3 Time Keeper.

P.S. K1's sell for more assembled on Ebay than Kits So the
issues of losing money on the rig appear to not be true.

I have a K2, and went for the K3 because of its much improved support for
digimodes (which were really an afterthought on the K2) and FM (which isn't
catered for at all.) The fact that the currency exchange rates were
favourable at the time I ordered it, and the credit crunch hadn't happened,
had a bearing on it too.

I think the K2 and K3 are like apples and oranges. The K2 is a more basic
radio with an emphasis on portability (small size, light weight, low current
consumption, facility for internal battery.) Plus it has the unique benefit
that you get to build it. The K3 is clearly designed to be more of a high
end desktop radio for those who want the ultimate in receiver performance.
And even if you'd prefer to build it, you only get to assemble it.

If you aren't sure you need the K3 then in my opinion you probably don't. I
don't chase DX, I only contest casually, and I don't really need a high end
radio. If Elecraft had brought out a K2 Mk II with 1Hz VFO resolution and
dedicated input/outputs for digi modes it would probably have done the job
for me, even without FM. So your decision will surely depend on whether
there are things you want to do that the K2 can't do.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Current setting?

2009-03-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

What is the voltage of your power supply? If it is 13.8 volts or
higher, there should be no HI CUR messages during normal operation with
CAL CUR set to 3.50. If the PS voltage is low (or you have a bad power
cable connection), you may see those messages at higher power settings.
The K2 maintains power level, and for any given power, it will take more
current if the voltage is low.

If you power supply voltage is good, but your power output is low, Hi
Curr warnings are an indication of a problem. I assume the power
outputs that you site are average readings on SSB - if so, that is
probably OK. What do you get when you use TUNE is the real question.

You may leave the CAL CUR setting at 3.50 Amps or even higher. You
might see some HI CURR messages on particular bands if you run the power
control all the way to max - but don't do that, just set the power to 12
watts or less and you should not see any.

Yes, the CAL CUR setting will limit the power output if that current is
exceeded. That is really a helpful indicator if one is running from a
battery - the message tells you that the battery voltage has dropped and
a re-charge may be necessary. If used in that manner, you can set the
CAL CUR to any point you desire, but with an AC power source, you can
run CAL CUR up to 4 amps with no problem.

So I've made it available for download.

Mac version (OS X 10.3 or later) http://sight.net/K3Time/K3Time.zip

 Windows XP/VISTA (maybe 98 not sure) http://sight.net/K3Time/K3TimeWin.zip

It's very easy to use and should be self-explanatory.

Select the appropriate serial port and baud rate the first time the program
is run. It will remember these settings, so they need to be set only once.

To display UTC time, click the UTC checkbox. To return to local time,
uncheck it. Be sure the computer's system clock is set properly, and if
applicable, set for Daylight Savings Time.

To setup unattended updates, click the Auto-Update checkbox. This will
automatically update the time on the K3 whenever the program is run (if the
K3 is attached and turned on, of course). When Auto-Update is enabled the
program will automatically send the current system time to the K3 and then
terminate after a 10 second delay. The delay allows time to turn off
auto-update if need be. On Windows, you could use Scheduled Tasks in the
control panel to set a time schedule for automatic execution of the program.
On the Mac, a cron job (crontab) could be used. Cronnix is a nice Aqua
frontend for cron if you're not familiar with creating crontabs from
Terminal. I'm not sure how well the K3 clock keeps time. I never use it. But
I would think updating the time once a week or even once a month would be
 sufficient.

Click the Update K3 button to send the current system time to the K3.

That's all there is to it. The K3 time will not be *exact* with the computer,
but it will get it close (within 0.5 second or so). I get the best results by
clicking the update button as soon as a new second begins. Waiting until late
into a second will result in the K3 being a second behind. Try clicking the
update button several times until you get a good visual sync.

I've done very little testing of the Windows version. There could be bugs.

The program works by sending a sequence of CAT commands to the K3. Clicking
 Update K3 begins this sequence:

 K31; // Enables K3 extended mode
 MN073; // Enters CONFIG:TIME Menu option
DS;// reads VFO A display area (now displaying TIME)

Parse DS; command response to get K3 HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND.

Determine computer HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND.

 SWT13; // select SECOND

UP; or DN; until K3 SECOND = computer SECOND

 SWT12; // select MINUTE

UP; or DN; until K3 MINUTE = computer MINUTE

 SWT11; // select HOUR

UP; or DN; until K3 HOUR = computer HOUR

 MN255; // exit menu

 DONE..

 Enjoy,

 David, W4SMT

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Current setting?

2009-03-12 Thread Mike-WE0H
Hi Don,

OK on the KAT2.

On the current question, I am seeing 14.36v supplied to the radio on
receive and 14.21v on transmit. A little bit of a drop with the long
wires to my assembly bench where I have been testing the K2 at. Power
output using the TUNE button and running through a Bird 43 meter into a
50 ohm Decibel load, varies from 10w at 1.8mc, 15-18w from 3.5mc thru
24.9mc and back down to 10w at 28.5mc. The power setting is at 10.0w on
the radio. I did not see any high current indicator when I tested it a
few minutes ago. I seen the high current message last night with the
current setting as it was factory default. It is now set to 3.5a. I
noticed the radio will put out 20w on any band from 75m thru 17m but as
you said keep it at 10w. Voltage measurements are with a Fluke 77 DVM
measured at the radio's power cable.

[Elecraft] [K2] 160m sensitivity below 1.9mc?

2009-03-12 Thread Mike-WE0H
Is it normal for the sensitivity to drop off starting at 1.9mc on 160
meters? The power output is 10w across the whole band but tuning from
2mc on down, there is a real apparent sensitivity degrade starting at
1.9mc. I have the VCO tuned so it stops receiving at 1.36mc. It tunes
well above 2.0mc on the other end.

Is there a mod or tweak I can do to keep the hot receive sensitivity
down to 1.80mc? The BC band is not important but I want all of 160
meters performing the same.

I'm installing my KRX3 now and trying to figure out which configuration to
install.

After reading the KRX3 manual and the K3 manual and looking at the pictures
on page 40 (K3 manual),

I do have KAT3 and KXV3 installed.

I do have a separate RX antenna for the low bands.

I want to use the SUB-RX on the higher bands together with the main RX with
the same antenna and accept an increase of the NF by 3 dB.

Do I need the AUX RF BNC installed?

I do not need to hook up the aux cable. You may wish to do so for future
use. You might want to listen on a beverage for the lowbands on one
receiver and your tribander on 20m so in that case you would want both. You
can select which antenna to use in

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 vs. K3

2009-03-12 Thread Robert C.Abell
Hi John,

I noticed your inquiry on the Elecraft reflector this AM.

I own both a K2/100 and a K3/100. I have built three K2's and my K3/100.
Depending on your interests the K3 is superior,
especially the receiver. The k2 was primarily designed as a CW rig and lacks in
SSB output. The VOX perpormance is inadequate.
Don't however get me wrong the K2 is an excellent product provided it is
assembled properly.
It is very easily put together and you will obtain excellent help, if needed,
from Elecraft or the many responders to the reflector.

The K3 is the best transceiver available today' bar none. There is nothing that
it cannot do. Buy the kit version, save $300.

I live in Wellesley, a small town west of Kitchener/Waterloo. Feel free to
e-mail or call me if I can help in your descision.

I've had a few requests for the K3 time updater I mentioned the other day.

The K3 time will not be *exact* with the
computer, but it will get it close (within 0.5 second or so). I get the best
results by clicking the update button as soon as a new second begins.
Waiting until late into a second will result in the K3 being a second
behind. Try clicking the update button several times until you get a good
visual sync.

I've done very little testing of the Windows version. There could be bugs.

The program works by sending a sequence of CAT commands to the K3. Clicking
Update K3 begins this sequence:

K31; // Enables K3 extended mode
MN073; // Enters CONFIG:TIME Menu option
DS;// reads VFO A display area (now displaying TIME)

Parse DS; command response to get K3 HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND.

Determine computer HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND.

SWT13; // select SECOND

UP; or DN; until K3 SECOND = computer SECOND

SWT12; // select MINUTE

UP; or DN; until K3 MINUTE = computer MINUTE

SWT11; // select HOUR

UP; or DN; until K3 HOUR = computer HOUR

MN255; // exit menu

DONE..

Enjoy,

David, W4SMT

We'll get there!

In the mean time, David developed a standalone utility that fulfills
whatever immediate need there is or this function.

Priorities are always under review. But setting the K3's TOD clock, easy as
it is to implement, hasn't ever been at the top of the list.

Constantly shifting priorities in development projects is a sure way to
extend the overall schedule and in the end reduce quality. Feature lists

VE3GYV John

Absolutely, yes, there are many good reasons to go K3 over K2.

I had a K2 and really liked it but wished it did some things better.
The K2 s-meter left me rather unimpressed. CW sidetone quality was good
but not great. I used an external AF filter to clean it up. The K2
display didn't give all that much information. The fan on the K2/100 is
very noisy. I used an external fan to keep the rig cool so the internal
fan would not turn on. The K2's SSB performance was good but no better.
I run CW only so I didn't care, however.

I upgraded to a K3/10 and absolutely love it. CW sidetone is very
sweet. AGC performance is better (adjustable). The S-meter is better.
Display is better. I have 2 key inputs (one for paddles one for manual
key) instead of just one. The rig feels like a real rig rather than a
very nice QRP rig.

When you do your price comparison, make sure you're comparing equivalent
rigs. The K3 comes with built-in DSP and does not need AF filtering.
With the K2 you have to add the DSP or AF as an option. K3 covers 160
meters - optional in the K2.

I've been using Dimension 4 for years on servers and workstations. You can
get it here:

http://www.thinkman.com/dimension4/

At an interval you specify, Dimension 4 connects to a time server that you
choose from an exhaustive list of time servers. The time server then sends
the correct time back to your computer, where Dimension 4 uses sophisticated
algorithms to correctly adjust your PC's clock to with-in a few milliseconds
of the real time.

Re: [Elecraft] accurate time

2009-03-12 Thread Mike Markowski
For situations where time is important, it's worth learning about NTP. It's an
open protocol and is run by default on most unix-like OSes. Unlike the Windows
NTP client which simply syncs every couple weeks (by default), an ntp daemon is
running always on your machine. It doesn't do a simple sync but continually, to
use the word loosely, monitors nearby time servers. The linux laptop in my
shack is always right on time, plus or minus such a tiny amount that it doesn't
matter.

The protocol is used worldwide and was initially developed by Prof Dave Mills at
Univ of Delaware, my alma mater. As an EE grad student, I used to enjoy
attending his presentations on NTP.

Does anybody really know what time it is? - Chicago:-)

Mike ab3ap

PS NTP can even sync against WWV for time keepers on isolated nets.

Re: [Elecraft] accurate time

2009-03-12 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Yes, NTP actually takes into account network latency between your
machine and the NTP server, so when the server gives it 12:01:01.001,
if the total latency is 100mS, it knows to add 50mS and so sets the
time to 12:01:01.051 and it does this a number of times, to get the
average time allowing for latency.

That's a bit of a simplification, but you get the idea.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 vs K3 ?

2009-03-12 Thread Stephen W. Kercel
John and other Elecrafters:

I am an extremely happy K2 owner. I have operated a K3 and I intend to
get one someday, but I am not in a particular hurry. In the interest of
full disclosure, I am strictly a CW guy, and any voice quality
advantages that K3 might have over the K2 are lost on me.

As other posters have mentioned, the K3 has many features that all work
somewhat better than the K2.

To the question of whether or not there is any good reason to go to the
K3, there is one good basic engineering reason. It has better dynamic
range. On the weak signal end, the K3 local oscillator has lower phase
noise than the K2. That means that in low ambient noise situations such
as 10 or 6 meters, the K3 will hear weak signals that the K2 does not
hear. On the strong signal end, the K3 has a saturation level as good as
(or marginally better than) the rigs that sell for $10K+. That is
significant in low band DXing and contesting; when you're trying to hear
that weak signal on 80 meters for that rare multiplier and W5 Texas
Kilowatt fires up the big rig a few 10s of KHz down the band from
where you're listening, the K3 is much less likely than the K2 to be
desensed (meaning that your ability to copy the rare multiplier
suddenly vanishes whether or not you can actually hear the interfering
signal) by his (somehow, very few of these honking big signals are
transmitted by women) booming signal.

Anyway, what you're paying the big bucks for is dynamic range. If you're
interested in copying extremely weak signals (in the presence of large
but undesired signals) in either the high bands or low bands, then the
added dynamic range of the K3 is well worth the $3400 (or so) for a
fully tricked out K3. If you mostly operate in a less demanding setting
the added dynamic range might not be worth the extra cost.

Some posters have noted that the K3 is designed to be the ultimate
contest rig. Compare it to car racing. Race cars cost more than cars for
highway driving. Unless you actually plan to race it, do you need to buy
one?

73,

Steve Kercel
AA4AK

The K2 was the former one.

 But I can make a qrp rig for $770 K2 kit instead of $1400 K3 semi-kit
and I am an electrical engineer.

Is there any good reason to go to the K3?

But the K2 is classic and puristic. It is the same when you compare

[Elecraft] K3 Transverter offset

2009-03-12 Thread Julian, G4ILO

Am I misunderstanding how the transverter offset is supposed to work? I set
XV1 OFS to 0.20. Now all my FM channels stored in memory are displaying the
frequency with the offset added in, e.g. 145.500.20. I would have thought
the idea was to add the offset to the frequency invisibly so the frequency
displayed was the true frequency.

[Elecraft] Fan controller for MFJ-4125 power supply

2009-03-12 Thread n1al
The MFJ-4125 PowerLite power supply is a great little unit for the price
(around $100). It puts out 13.7V at 25A in a small, light package that is
perfect for portable operation with the K3 or K2. Unlike some other
switching supplies, it has very low electrical noise.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for acoustic noise. The loud fan is
the one thing people complain about. So I designed a fan controller that
reduces the fan voltage for normal operation while running it at full
speed when the internal heat sink warms up. I've posted an article on my
web page:
http://www.cds1.net/~n1al/ham/fan_controller.htm

I have enough parts left over to build 4 more units. If anyone is
interested I can supply a kit of parts for $5 postpaid/USA that includes
the clamp and all electrical parts except for the TIP-29 power transistor.
(I'll throw in a TIP-31 from my junk box that that should work the same,
or you can obtain the exact part yourself.) I also have a couple PC
boards left over that I'll include while they last. Email me if you're
interested: n...@cds1.net .

[Elecraft] K2 vs K3 ?

2009-03-12 Thread James Duffey
The difference in price between a fully equipped K2 at $1230 and a
bare bones K3 at $1400 is $170, or slightly more than 10%. For that
extra $170 you get a better integrated rig, six meters, FM, 20 dB
better dynamic range, and a host of other features typical of top of
the line rigs. If you add the 6M transverter to the K2 to bring 6M
capability to the K2, the price of the K2/XV50 combination is actually
higher.

The base K-2 is a very nice reasonably priced CW only rig for either
base or portable operation. When you add in SSB, computer I/o
interface, 160M, 60M/transverter interface, noise blanker, and the DSP
filter, it seems like less of a good deal, especially when compared to
the K3. So if you want a barebones K2, that is a good deal. If you
want a full featured rig, you are better off with the K3.

The K2 is better than the K3 in two respects, it is smaller and it
draws less current.

For most people, the K3 is a much better deal than the K2. - Duffey

Re: [Elecraft] K2 vs K3 ?

2009-03-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
I must agree with Jim Duffey's assessment.
The K2 is a great transceiver, but when all the options are added to
make it an all band 160m through 10 meter transceiver with SSB and noise
blanker and audio DSP, the K3 with its built-in 160 meter through 6
meter coverage, built-in IF DSP which allows not only SSB but FM and AM
modes too, the small price differential makes the K3 a bargain priced
transceiver.

A basic K3/10 will do all that a K2/10 will do and more. One does not
need to fill all the filter slots, nor add all the options to have a
great performing transceiver, so the price comparison should be between
a basic K3 and a K2 with the K160RX, KNB2, KSB2 and KDSP2 options -
there is not much of a difference.

Of course, the K2 is built from parts soldered in by the builder while
the K3 is a plug-together kit. Some may define a hand-built K2 as being
more personal and therefore having more value than a plug-together K3
kit, and who am I to argue with that perspective, it is a thrill to see
something you assembled from small bits and pieces come to life.

Both the K2 and the K3 have their great points, but if you are after the
best performance for the dollar, the basic K3 is IMHO the best deal on
the ham market today. The K2 is also a bargain if one is willing to
give up some of the bands and features that come 'stock' with the basic
K3, and for portable QRP operation, the K2 has less current draw which
leads to more operating time on a battery.

73,
Don W3FPR

James Duffey wrote:

- Duffey

I do not need to hook up the aux cable. You may wish to do so for future
use. You might want to listen on a beverage for the lowbands on one
receiver and your tribander on 20m so in that case you would want both. You
can select which antenna to use in

I'm installing my KRX3 now and trying to figure out which configuration to
install.

After reading the KRX3 manual and the K3 manual and looking at the pictures
on page 40 (K3 manual),

I do have KAT3 and KXV3 installed.

I do have a separate RX antenna for the low bands.

I want to use the SUB-RX on the higher bands together with the main RX with
the same antenna and accept an increase of the NF by 3 dB.

Do I need the AUX RF BNC installed?

I must agree with Jim Duffey's assessment.
The K2 is a great transceiver, but when all the options are added to
make it an all band 160m through 10 meter transceiver with SSB and noise
blanker and audio DSP, the K3 with its built-in 160 meter through 6
meter coverage, built-in IF DSP which allows not only SSB but FM and AM
modes too, the small price differential makes the K3 a bargain priced
 transceiver.

While I have NO argument with this reasoning, I chose to build the K2
because I could afford it as a basic kit. And I have every reason to
think that I'll be able to afford to add about one of the listed options
a month. This I will be able to do without putting anything on my
already overstressed credit cards. Were I to try to buy a K3 it would
be many months before the cash would be in hand. [ The budget
committee, KB4WYR, is fully behind this project as well. And would
lament having to wait for a K3.]
The K2 is expected to be one of the building blocks for our VHF/UHF
station, with a K3 coming along as it can. I'm thinking that this
combination will give us a good high end weak signal station for 50 mhz
and up.

[Elecraft] K3 on supply with amp = NO - WAS Juice your K3?

2009-03-12 Thread Jim Miller KG0KP
Those are my thoughts also. Follows is my way of isolating the shock of
an 80 amp audio modulated load from my K3 input power supply.

I do run my radio bench with a 70 amp linear Astron supply BUT I have a
seperate Power supply buss(pair) and a battery buss(pair)(plus a seperate
ground buss bar). The two busses are connected to each other by a knife
style disconnect from an air-conditioner cutoff (new and removed from box
and mounted under bench) BUT there is 25 feet or wire involved and the spare
wire (about 20 of the 25 feet) is coiled up as a sort of (wimpy) inductor.
BTW, the 4 buss bars (2 bar pairs) are 1/4 by 1 inch aluminum and the ground
buss is 1/4 by 1 inch copper mounted on the upper back of my bench. The
wire is long and is 14 ga on purpose to add resistance to partially isolate
the shock of the 80 amp requirement (during audio peaks) of the ALS500
solid state amplifier. The amp is wired to the battery buss with 3 pairs of
12 ga wires (14 inches) and the battery buss is wired to the battery also
with 3 pairs of 12 ga wires (12 inches). The battery is two LARGE
automotive batteries (one stolen for my truck recently not yet replaced).
(Flame on about gasses if you wish, I'm not listening) I don't want that
shock on the power supply AND I don't want my K3 to have to try to operate
properly on that kind of voltage that must be very noisy (and it matters not
if the power goes out, I keep on operating).

The battery buss (and batteries) is held up in non-use times by a battery
maintenance charger (of no use during operation). Not one of the $7 ones
that are useless on this size battery (if any), these are about $30 and are
larger and intelligent and monitor and only add charge as needed.

73, de Jim KG0KP

Earlier today, I remarked that one of my K3's was running
warm in the NAQP RTTY after an extended number of RTTY CQ's.
Tonight I did a little experiment - key down at 100 watts
for four minutes while noting PA Temp and fan speed. It
turns out that there really is no problem. Both K3's behaved
identically and both leveled off at PA Temp = 64C after
about 3 minutes. For the record, here are the results (best
 viewed with Courier font):

 Time Temp Fan

 1:45554
 2:40604
 2:50624

Re: [Elecraft] K2 vs K3

2009-03-12 Thread WILLIS COOKE

The K3 draws about 1 amp with one receiver, about an amp and one half with two
receivers. It draws about 20 amps transmitting 100 watts, 15 amps at 50 watts,
11 amps at 25 watts, and about 3.5 amps at 5 watts. It is very easy to set the
power that you want so you don't spend any more battery than you need to. The
above readings were taken with the power supply on about 13.8 volts.

It weighs about 8 pounds. It is very portable in my opinion, but you might
prefer a KX-1 if you are going to hike the Appalachian Trail with your
transceiver and a battery.

So for the discussion about K2 vs K3, I don't know much
 about either but am
preparing to purchase. Is the K3 portable to any degree?
 One of the things
that attracted me to the K2 was not only building it but
 the fact that at
least at low power, it was very portable. Thanks in
 advance!

2009-03-12 Thread Jan Erik Holm
 From the rules:
Please limit power to 100W maximum.

Since I don´t operate at the 100W power level (or lower)
does it mean I can´t take part in it? Just let me know
and I will not bother.
