[Elecraft] K3:DSP Upgrade well worth it

2010-05-23 Thread Craig
Hi folks

I just completed the DSP upgrade board swap. I would just like to say that its
well worth it. The K3 sounds much better and smoother.

The first impression that you get is that the receiver sounds calm and quite.
The harshness and sharp sound has mostly gone. The receiver does not sound
like it has excessive bass, nor does it sound hollow or mushy. The receiver
sounds very much like a very good analog receiver. It actually sounds warm,
rich and very pleasing to the ears.

So for those thinking about it, I would recommend that you do the upgrade.
This upgrade would be especially applicable if you have very good hearing and
notice all these artifacts that many have spoken about..

I have not measured anything, these are just anecdotal observations. Some
people might say that these claims amount to audiophile voodoo, however I am
not a ESSB freak!

Anyhow I am very happy with this voodoo upgrade!

Re: [Elecraft] Possible USB 2.0 mod

2010-05-23 Thread Bob Naumann
Not only will the use of such a thing negate the K3 talking to the P3 et al,
it does not resolve the USB driver / OS / software problem whatsoever.

This is a cool thing, but all it's doing is physically moving the same USB
to RS232 converter to inside your K3 instead of between the K3 and your
computer.

You will still be dealing with virtual com ports and all the other problems
that we all know and love with USB to RS232 converters. That said, the FTDI
chip set seems to be the most compatible with later OS releases (i.e.;
Vista, Win 7) but there are still software issues that may need to be
resolved.

Re: [Elecraft] Samelex Power Supplies with a K3

2010-05-23 Thread Steve Ellington
I read the Eham reviews about how quiet the fan is and that it seldom even
runs so I bought one. I used it to power the K3. The fan came on after about
3 minutes of receive mode operation and it was louder than anything else in
the shack. I hate fans, except when I'm sleeping! The fan attempts to
dischage out the bottom of the supply (strange). Also, the voltmeter stayed
pegged at 15v however the voltage output was really 13.8.
I had no RF hash although one time I held my AM transistor portable up close
to it and it really wiped it out but so will most switchers.
I unhooked the fan and ran it that way for a few weeks until one day the
over temp. sensor shut it down.
I also have the little MFJ switcher and it performs just as well and cost
less but it too has a disgusting little fan.
Finally, I went back to my Aston 35m which has no fan and helps hold down
the desk. AhhhNo noise, No hashJust nice clean DC.

2010-05-23 Thread Paul Christensen
Finally, I went back to my Aston 35m which has no fan and helps hold down
the desk. AhhhNo noise, No hashJust nice clean DC.

I've been dealing with the same issues as I transitioned from a 20 year-old
Astron RS-35 to an HP bench supply and an Astron switcher. In each case,
both supplies use loud rotational fans. Recently, I've added fan speed
control with a PWM controller. Instead of limiting the fan's speed through
current alone, a pulse-width-modulator controls speed by producing short
pulses of voltage. Speed is then controlled by the duty-cycle of the
circuit's pulse train.

After trying several attempts to smoothly control rotational speed with
series resistors and voltage-dividers, I found several low-cost PWM kits (~
USD $20) available that accurately control speed down to slow levels without
stalling. In the case of the SS-20, I created two threshold steps, one to
engage when the heatsink temperature rises above a pre-determined amount.
However, after adding the PWM controller and letting the idle speed rest
where no noise is heard, enough air flows to keep the higher speed from
kicking in, except when I key down into a load for more than a minute.

If you have a problem with fan noise, put the box on the floor. You

Re: [Elecraft] Samelex Power Supplies with a K3

2010-05-23 Thread Alfred Frugoli
I have one I bought a few months ago to go with my new K3. Works great. I
do not notice any hash, and the fan noise hasn't bothered me yet (but then
again I'm usually running 2 rigs, 2 power supplies and 2 amps, all at the
same time. The PS fan is NOT the loudest thing in my shack by any means.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 keypad freq entry curiosity

2010-05-23 Thread ab2tc

You are absolutely right. The RF gain doesn't work in frequency entry mode
either. Curiously the 4 little encoder knobs do. You can change bandwidth,
mic gain and compression freely. I think it's important that the AF gain
always works, so this ought to be fixed. I have had mine for two years and
never noticed this.

Not a big deal as this is the first time in two years of hard use that the
 situation has ever occurred.

 Hi folks

I just completed the DSP upgrade board swap. I would just
like to say that its well worth it. The K3 sounds much
 better and smoother.

The first impression that you get is that the receiver
sounds calm and quite. The harshness and sharp sound has
mostly gone. The receiver does not sound like it has
excessive bass, nor does it sound hollow or mushy. The
receiver sounds very much like a very good analog
receiver. It actually sounds warm, rich and very
 pleasing to the ears.

So for those thinking about it, I would recommend that
you do the upgrade. This upgrade would be especially
applicable if you have very good hearing and notice all
these artifacts that many have spoken about..

I have not measured anything, these are just anecdotal
observations. Some people might say that these claims
amount to audiophile voodoo, however I am not a ESSB
 freak!

Anyhow I am very happy with this voodoo upgrade!

I agree! I would rather have a larger, more expensive box with a big
heatsink than a fan. The only fan I have ever heard that was silent was
one with the blades and motor removed and destroyed. :-)

Most people don't seem to notice the noise so I guess we just have to
endure it as we seem to be very much the minority and manufacturers just
won't spend the extra money to eliminate the fan.

I have a Yaesu FT-8900R in my truck mounted enclosed in the centre
console. Even with road noise at freeway speeds, I notice when its fan
cuts in. Most people do not find the fan in this radio offensive and
consider it quiet. I suppose I just have a high sensitivity to fan noise.

From my work in the audio industry I have come to the conclusion that
sound is very subjective. Each person seems to have their own idea of
what sounds good and bad. I think that people get used to a certain
colouration or lack of colouration and that becomes the standard to
which they judge.

That is why some people will praise a particular loudspeaker and others
will find it offensive. My work with broadcast radio stations in parts
of South America, found that the norm was to overmodulate the signals to
get the loudest signal on the band. The distorted sound became the norm
and people expected other sources like CD's to sound the same.

The same phenomena is happening with the new flat screen TV's. They are
put in stretch mode to fill the screen and people just don't seem to
notice the distorted picture.

I was very disappointed to see the big fan on the new KPA500. I have a
KPA100 that is still not finished because I keep looking at the fan and
wondering why I bought something with a fan.

Eric and Wayne, would you consider a larger heatsink as an option to
have a fanless KPA500?

Oh, I too remember now, my K3/100 has fans, I remember putting them in. But, I
think they are broken because I NEVER hear them.

PEH's FIVE solutions to fan noise...

(1) Use headphones.
(2) Turn the sound up on your K3 speakers.
(3) Use digital interfaces and play background music while you operate with
your computer.
(4) Put a wind-chime behind your K3 and listen to the sweet tinkling notes
instead of the fan.
(5) Receive on your K3 (fan not needed), transmit on your KX1 (no fan).

Variations of a few dB from one unit to another of the same radio are typical.
For the higher performing radios, most operators will not be able to tell the

There are exceptions, for a particularly pathological case look at the Third

For radios based on straight analog to digital converters (ADC), that is those

do not manifest themselves until the ADC has essentially saturated.

Everyone should be happy that other manufacturers are striving for optimum
receiver performance competitive with Elecraft, whether driven by the K3 or
not. Competition is healthy for the market place and we all benefit. It is a

If you have a problem with fan noise, put the box on the floor. You don't
need it on the operating table anyway and moving it away from the radio
can't hurt the rfi issues.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 fan noise, part XXLIV

2010-05-23 Thread Joe Planisky
The topic of K3 fan noise seems to come up every now and then, and
each time it does there's a chorus of people who say the fans in their
K3 are absolutely silent, and an equal chorus of people who say the
fans are clearly audible.

I'm in the latter camp. I hate fan noise and I can clearly hear the
fans on my K3 even at the lowest speed.

I recognize that people's perception of noise depends on many things:
other ambient noise in the environment, personal hearing acuity, how
the equipment is placed on the desk, what kind of surface is
immediately behind it, etc. etc.

However, I'm also wondering if Elecraft has changed brands or models
of fans from time to time. It's possible that some brands/models
might be quieter than others.

The fans in my K3 are made by UTEC and have model numbers of

 AT6015L-12L2B-ND2 and same prefix-ND5

I would be interested in hearing from others who care to check the
brand and model # of their fans, and whether you perceive them to be
quiet or not.

It's probably best if we don't clutter the list with fan brands and
models, so please reply to me directly and I'll post a summary of my
findings in a few days.

2010-05-23 Thread WILLIS COOKE
I have a JetStream JTPS-35 switcher.  It has a humongous heat sink inside the
box and has a fan that makes some noise when the transceiver is turned on.
However, I can't hear it when my Dentron Clipperton L is turned on.  The
Dentron has an aftermarket Radio Shack fan.  The original fan was replaced
before 1990 when I bought the amp second hand.  It seems that a big
enough heatsink for the switching transistors might be counterproductive to the
light weight.

I did reduce the fan noise quite a bit by tying the wires that were touching
the fan blades to the heat sink with a twistie from a cord that I got with
something.

Some are complaing about loud fan noise. Do you have that with yours? I
don't think your review mentioned fan noise as I recall.

I said that you'll know when the fan comes on. That's the reason I modified
the unit to keep the fan turning at low speed. That keeps the PS cool and
so the fan almost never goes to full speed. It never goes to full speed
when just powering the K3. But when I also power other rigs (I have an
IC-706MKII and an IC-706MKIIG that I sometimes also have on) along with
operating the K3, sometimes it will switch to full speed. But this is very
rare.

Again, not the case. Current releases of Apple OS-X do not ship

I have used the alinco dm-330v (think that number is correct). Has a small
fan at the rear, but in normal use you just cannot hear it over normal room
noise.
Like most switchers it destroys broadcast AM reception, but haven't heard
anything while using the k3 for normal ham use.
it is a 30 amp supply with meters, and adjustable with a detent at 13.8 v.
Also has a switch to set for 13.8 v fixed operation.
binding posts on the rear, with two sets of spring connectors on front and
cigarette lighter connection.
the entire top is a heat sink, but I've never gottten it over fairly warm.

Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 fan noise, part XXLIV

[Elecraft] K2 Build - #6950

2010-05-23 Thread steve d

I received my kit on Wednesday and I got to the first alignment already! The
front panel is done, the Control Board is pretty much done, and I started in on
the RF deck.

However, I am missing one of the caps for the Control Board #272 (.0027uH).

Before I power up for the first time, am I OK with this stage the way it is or
will that cap play a vital role? It is out of C36 (there are 3 of this value on
the board). The schematic shows it goes between ground and the + side of U10B
(an LMC660).

You can follow my build progress on my blog at (mycall).com. (I tried sending
the link and the reflector kicked it back - anything other than text gets the
boot)

Re: [Elecraft] FT-5000 against K3 ?

2010-05-23 Thread Doug Turnbull
James,
You state this very well. Competition is good and sooner or later
someone will produce a better radio than the K3. Many K3 users would like
different emphasis in areas of design but then come to realize that we would
probably miss some of the current features such as portability. There is
however one area that I bet no one is going to equal and that is the
involvement of design engineers with amateurs! The design is ever
improving and we have a great community within the Elecraft users. No
other radio manufacturer yet matches this and I bet no one will.

Variations of a few dB from one unit to another of the same radio are
typical. For the higher performing radios, most operators will not be able
to tell the difference.

There are exceptions, for a particularly pathological case look at the Third
Order Dynamic Range Narrow Spaced (dB) for the two K2s that Robert Sherwood
tested:

 http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

For radios based on straight analog to digital converters (ADC), that is
those that have no traditional mixer/LO/IF front end, such as the Perseus
the third order dynamic range is not a good figure of merit, as the third
order products do not manifest themselves until the ADC has essentially
saturated.

Everyone should be happy that other manufacturers are striving for optimum
receiver performance competitive with Elecraft, whether driven by the K3 or
not. Competition is healthy for the market place and we all benefit. It is a
lack of American competition in the 70s and 80s that allowed the Japanese
imports to get a toehold here. For better and for worse. - Duffey

Normal room noise? This is probably what masks fan noise for a lot of
people.

In my house, loud noises are the dust particles crashing into and
settling on surfaces.

I have thrown away analog quartz clocks because the ticking was too
loud. And yes the motor noise in the DVD and VCR players bother me even
when watching a movie at a good volume.

If there is lots of noise in a house, with furnace fans, or air
conditioners, or traffic on the street, then it could mask a the fan
noise from the radio or power supply.

For those bothered by fan noise, you might look into my fan speed
controller article in February QST (p 44). It's a very simple circuit
that gradually speeds up the fan as the temperature rises. PC boards
are available from FAR circuits or you can just breadboard it on a scrap
of perf board.

It was designed for the MFJ-4125 but should work with minor modification
with any power supply that uses a 12V fan.

Re: [Elecraft] Possible USB 2.0 mod

2010-05-23 Thread Brett Howard
Thanks for the congrats on the new call and I must say that I agree w/
you on the connector I usually have a full up RS232 straight
through cable between my usb to RS232 adapter and then throw a few turns
through a BOCI before it enters the radio...

BTW and FYI BOCI stands for (Big 'Ol Chunk of Iron)

This is a cool thing, but all it's doing is physically moving the same USB
to RS232 converter to inside your K3 instead of between the K3 and your
 computer.

You will still be dealing with virtual com ports and all the other problems
that we all know and love with USB to RS232 converters. That said, the FTDI
 chip set seems to be the most compatible with later OS releases (i.e.;
Vista, Win 7) but there are still software issues that may need to be
 resolved.

Craig, Philippe and the rest of the gang,

I also upgraded last week and I can confirm Craig´s and Philippe´s
comments. The K3 simply sounds much nicer, warmer and less annoying and
especially SSB, which was quite unpleasant to my ears(and yes,I played
around with the settings many hours),is now far better than my back up Icom

Re: [Elecraft] Samlex 1223 1235 power supplies

2010-05-23 Thread abell
I use the Samlex SEC 1223 power supply for my K3/100 and the Samlex SEC 1235
to power my Ten Tec OMNI Vll transceivers.

Both power supplies are dead quiet, the fans seldom come on. They both sit
on top of the transceivers and never cause sperious
interference.

Phil I would highly recommend these units. Less than $110.00 for the 1223
unit,

[Elecraft] K2 RF Board resistance checks - not in spec

2010-05-23 Thread Steve KC8QVO

Here are my out-of-spec measurements. Any ideas?
R1 = 96.4k
R2 = 96.5k

Both should be 1M. Everthing else in the list checks out (well above the
lower spec limit).

At this point the rig powers up and gives me the 201 message, switches to
ELECrAFt, then 7100.00c but the buttons and knobs don't work (the next step
is to push the display button to see what the voltage reading is, switch
back to VFO, and spin the VFO knob to observe the frequency change - neither
the display button or the VFO knob do anything).

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 fan noise, part XXLIV

2010-05-23 Thread Andrew Moore
Joe - while I appreciate your concern for cluttering the list with fan noise
noise, that's exactly what these lists are for -- discussion -- and now
there are loads of tools and filtering options for incoming email. Gmail's
threads for example will keep all related messages together (if subject is
the same)... I think there's more value in letting everybody see the
responses as they come in. Relative to the grand scheme of things, even the
fully loaded thread will be nothing compared to the rest of the bandwidth
used around it. Great stuff, bring it on...! Just my opinion.

The topic of K3 fan noise seems to come up every now and then, and
each time it does there's a chorus of people who say the fans in their

Re: [Elecraft] K2 RF Board resistance checks - not in spec

2010-05-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Steve,

Those resistance readings are too low, and you will have to find the cause.
What I believe is happening is that the low resistance on the paddle
connections is triggering the circuits to go into a transmit state - and
if that happens, the buttons do not work nor will the encoder change
frequency.

Do you have anything plugged into the key jack? If so, remove it and
remeasure.
Did you make the measurement after the RF Board and the Control Board
had been connected? If so, then those readings are intended to be done
on the RF Board alone.
If still low, check for solder bridges - check RF Board J8 pins 17 and
18 carefully. If there is a large deposit of solder, wich away the excess.
As a last resort, lift one end of R1 and R2 and remeasure the resistance
both at the key jack and at J8 pins 17 and 18 - both should be greater
than 1 megohm. If the key jack is low, you may have a defective key
jack, but if J8 pins 17 and 18 are low, you have a short to another
circuit somewhere. Again, examine the soldering carefully. Solder
sufficient to only fill the thru-plated hole is all that is necessary.
If you have a pile of solder much more than that, wick most all of it
away, it is certain to cause trouble.

Please understand that I have no idea at this time about your soldering
skills (no insult intended), but too much solder and not enough heat are
common builder problems - the solder must flow out onto the solder pad
and the lead, and excess solder will mask a bad connection. Adjust the
soldering station temperature so you can produce a good flow of molten
solder in 2 to 3 seconds.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for May 23rd 24th, 2010

2010-05-23 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Twenty meters was pretty good this evening. Forty meters seemed to be more
problematic ;) Weather reports were much nicer to my east than they were to my
south. I did get a few reports of pleasant weather in California but also had
two others with chilly temperatures. It was all a matter of how close one
lived to the ocean. I live at altitude but am not far from the Pacific. A
blast from the Gulf of Alaska traveled as far south as Baja but did not get far
onshore.
The sun has awakened once again. Sunspot 1072 has grown rapidly and now
threatens us with possible C-class flares. However, if they do not happen soon
the flares will pass by without effecting the earth. Exciting to watch but not
helpful for propagation. Maybe more spots will sprout in the next few weeks to
keep our ionosphere well fed. I would enjoy having the MUF rise above twenty
meters or even higher. Sporadic Es have begun though. 6 meter CW contacts are
a hoot. Distant ones are even more fun.

   On to the lists =

I am still working on the database so there will be gaps in my reports until
it is rebuilt. I now have three working computers, each with a copy of the
database. I will not lose it again. I do need to worry about update order but
with CVS in place it should be easier. If you wish to supply a fill for any
gap in the above list, or corrections, please email them to me.
