Does Elecraft keep a history of each K3 manufactured and the follow on
mods? Tracked by serial number? My #250 has been back to the mothership
several times for repairs/mods etc. I am not sure if my KXV3 has been
changed to the 'A' or not. Thinking about adding the P3 to the lineup

The P3 does not require the KXV3A, the original KXV3 works fine. The main
addition for the A has to do with a new TMP connector for the K144XV.

I think you'll have to use the filter capability of your mail client. Most
posters
put the product in square brackets in the subject line ([K3] if it's a K3
post). Of
course if you did that, you would have missed your own post:-)

Merry Christam Colin, you can't 'subscribe' to K3 only, but you can put rules
into your mail client (if it supports them) that trash something with K1, KX1,
K2 etc in the header - having first ensured it does have K3 there of course.
Thats what I do - it cuts down the traffic quite a bit, but a

I wouldn't describe myself as particularly computer literate, but that said,
marrying the K3 and MKII was a snap. Just buy the proper cable when you get

Having been there, done that, made every mistake imaginable, read the

The com ports of Microham devices can be made stable, even though it
uses USB to get to the box, by simply loading the USB Device router at
boot time. So my COM 7 and COM 8 never change, because those numbers
have been set in software before any variable plug and play USB stuff
is run
At some point the advice was to always load the Microham USB router at
boot time. What was the reason for that?
Convenience ... it was there when the user wanted to use it without
the need to wait for it to load.
Just to make sure that com ports 8 and under weren't gobbled up?

I attempted to remotely upgrade the firmware from 3.97 to 4.22 using

It failed. The K3 utility had detected a 38400 baud rate, even though
the radio had been set to 19200 baud. The

Gary,
I have had a K3 for 2 years now (Serial # 934) and have found that getting this

What's happened to my K3? I've been noticing today that on rx, the CW

I change modes to USB (no other changes), that roughness goes away
entirely. This is not the mechanical fuzziness that I've heard before
that's audio
Firmware load always occurs at 38400 bps, that's the only speed the K3
bootstrap loader supports. The K3 Utility changes the serial port speed to
38400 bps for firmware load and changes it back after the firmware is loaded. I

Randy,
Since the problem seems to be confined to times that the internal
speaker is being used, I must ask if you have the synthesizer stiffener
added to your K3.
Why it would suddenly become a problem when it was not before is
anyone's guess, maybe the screws mounting the synthesizer board
Don,
Thanks. But my K3 came with the synthesizer stiffener. If this were
the problem, wouldn't the roughness be worse at higher audio gain
settings? It's not, and appears at the lowest gain that I can copy the
signal.

Was there not a modification required to the original KXV3 on the IF output,

Yes, there was a mod and you get the resistor needed with the P3. You are
correct though, the KXV3A does not need the mod.

There is a single resistor mod on the RF board for greater IF gain for the P3.
No mod to the KXV3 or KXV3A, but the P3 does use the IF out connector, so one
of the KXV3 or KXV3A is used.

Well, it would seem the stiffener is not your problem, but I would pop
the top and heck the synthesizer mounting screws for tightness anyway.
Perhaps if you can better describe roughness for us, it may help.

This sounds like a classic ground loop problem where your DX doubler may
not be at the same AC ground potential as the K3s. Are they all
separately grounded to the same point? Same power supply too?
