Yes, that is normal. When you switch to FM you are listening to a much wider
portion of the band you are on.

I confirm it's normal and common with most rigs. But if you don't like the
background noise on FM you can use the squelch control to cut it out.
Careful setting of the squelch will ensure no background noise but as soon
as a weak station is received it will break the squelch and you will hear
it.

The K1, K2 and XV series of transverters were a distinctive dark grey
(gray) by which the mojo Elecraft products were easily identified.
Unfortunately, things turned to black when the KX1 was introduced.
Despite black often being associated with death, Elecraft gave its
reasons at the time. Personally I was sorry to see the change to black
which makes the equipment less distinguishable from the opposition.

On the other hand, as far as coordinating with the decor in you shack,
one could say that black goes with anything (except black).

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX audio distorted on FM

2011-11-25 Thread Ray Sills
Hi Tom:

Very true. And, another factor is that most FM receiver IF circuits
run the circuit gain at maximum. The resultant signal becomes
distorted, but only in the sense that amplitude variations are
totally removed. No matter, of course, since you want to detect the -
frequency- variations (it's FM, after all). So, without using a
squelch circuit to mute the audio, it's going to sound much louder.

In fact, most squelch circuits use that broad-band noise to determine
that a signal is -not- on the frequency. When a signal shows up, the
receiver's AGC will detect that and turn the max gain down. The
difference in levels between the empty frequency and one with a user
on it, opens the squelch, and then you hear the station.

When the incoming station is full quieting... it's signal is so
strong that the IF gain is pushed down so much that the detected
audio is quiet.. i.e. no additional band noise.. just the clean
audio to your speaker. Same deal with FM broadcast receivers.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 no RF until power cycle

2011-11-25 Thread Mike Harris
I don't have a KPA500, however, I did have an occasional problem with
the K3 on power up. If I pressed the K3 power switch too quickly after
switching on the PSU (switch mode) sometimes the K3 would lock up part
powered. If I delay pressing the power switch for 3-4 seconds all is
OK. Possibly this is caused by the K3 having to settle to an idle off
state, sort of wake up before requesting full switch on. Power rails
caps charged, that sort of thing.

The KPA500 might be the same.

function of reduced IF gain - it is a function of the limiter.
Quieting is observed as signal strength rises past the point where
limiting begins, and full quieting occurs at the point at which the
signal is strong enough to saturate the limiter so that no AM

Is the corresponding hole on J68A on the KPAIO3 board plugged? It may
be keyed so that you can't plug the KPAIO3 in backwards. According to
the schematics, pins 5 and 6 on J68A/P68A are not used.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 no RF until power cycle

2011-11-25 Thread NH7RO
I think I found the culprit thanks to the mention of no key cable connected
when using the KPA-K3 AUX cable. (I already checked the TX:INH item and
it was OFF)

I had my key cable connected to both the K3 and KPA despite also having the
AUX cable between the two.
I had left it connected ever since I was initially having trouble with the
amp right after I built it---that trouble was due to one of the ribbon
connectors only being connected to one row of pins which I soon fixed.
Thereafter, I forgot about having the key cable still in play.

This morning I unplugged the key cable and turned on the KPA, hit the mic
button and voila! The amp powers up 1st time on every band as it should!
Aha!

Hope this helps others who might be experiencing the same problem---it's not
sticky relays in the amp it's sticky relays in my noggin!

[Elecraft] Unable to transmit on 147.87 FM with K3+xvtr

2011-11-25 Thread Edward R. Cole
Having sold all my other radios in my KX3 garage sale, I now have
to rely on using the K3 with my DEMI 144-28 transverter for operating
on local 2m repeaters. I thought the K3 was capable of providing
drive on 28-32 MHz when in transverter mode so the whole 2m band
would be covered.

I get 0.73mw (-1.5 dBm) max drive at 146.52 MHz (K3=30.52-MHz) but
only -15 dBm indicated at 147.87 (K3=31.87 MHz).
ergo no output on 2m much above 30.5 MHz due low drive from the
K3. The K3 does receive the entire 2m band (covers 28-32 MHz). BTW
the max drive is 1.8mw from 28-30 MHz.

I guess this will mean I am unable to use many of the 2m repeater
frequencies (146-147.99) until I receive my new KX3. Hopefully it
can generate 1-2w min. up to 32 MHz. If not then I will have to
modify my transverters to have two LO frequencies to cover that range
(116 and 118 MHz).

I believe that's the case, Ed. The K3's band pass filters roll off at 30
MHz. The K144XV option does cover the whole 8 MHz of the 2-meter band but
does it in two bands that switch automatically and seamlessly as the K3 is
tuned from 144 to 148 MHz. The main K3 never tunes beyond 28 to 30 MHz. The
K144XV switches the local oscillator frequency as needed to do this.

If practical, you might consider changing the L.O. frequency in your

Re: [Elecraft] Unable to transmit on 147.87 FM with K3+xvtr

2011-11-25 Thread Edward R. Cole
Ron,

One of the specs that I noted when buying the K3 was that the 30-MHz
limit was relaxed for allowing operation above 30-MHz (this is
printed on page 39 of the manual). But then it mentions Rx and Tx
signals will fall off. Well, I expected there to be something there.

From my testing the receiver will work 28-32 MHz OK but the
transmitter is effectively limited to under 30.7 MHz. This does
permit using the simplex FM channels near 146.52 and the repeaters up
to 147 MHz since they transmit on a 0.6 MHz low-split. But none of
the repeater channels about 147 can be used.

My DEMI L144-28HP-DRX transverter is optimized for 144-146 and way to
difficult to add a second xtal. Even if I could drive it the output
falloff may be excessive (I have not way of knowing that at
present). This transverter was not bought for FM operations and was
never intended for that use by me. This is temporary till the KX3 arrives.

I have an older DEMI 144-28LP transverter (circa 2007 and out of
production) that apparently had the option for a second LO freq. I
never completed the Tx side since it was used as a Rx converter for
the SDR-IQ. But now I am working on getting the Tx side completed
and bought a 14w RF module to increase the output to ~10w from the
roughly 20mw drive level available. The transverter was originally
available for either low-power (mw) or 25w out. I bought the LP
version since my main use was for receive.

I'm setting this up to drive with the KX3 (once I get it). My other
use was driving mw transverters where 20mw is adequate. I will
explore getting a second xtal to be able to operate 144-148. Once
the internal Elecraft 2m Transverter comes out I will install it.

Ed

Re: [Elecraft] K3/SteppIR setup

2011-11-25 Thread Jack Berry
Clipped pin 7 wire and all is well. Both DX Lab's radio controller module and
the logging module are listening to the K3.

Thanks!

Cable from SteppIR is the S-13.

The S-13 cable has a problem ... disconnect the wire at pin 7 on
the transceiver end. SteppIR loops a TTL copy of RxD out on pin
7 and back in on pin 7. If there is a load on pin 7, the RxD can
be compromised.

Tell me about AI, can't find that in the manual.

AI is in the Programmer's guide and causes the K3 to send the IF
data whenever the frequency/band/mode changes. It will not help
if the transceiver is loading the TTL RxD signal.

The K3 has been working fine with DX-Lab logger and controller but not worried
 about that yet.

Elecraft uses a modified Kenwood protocol.

Have you enabled AI mode in the K3 and is a logging program running?

What cable are you using to connect the K3 to SDA-100?

Is the SDA-100 Auto mode turned on?

Should the Orion or Kenwood mode be selected when using the K3 with SteppIR's

 would
 check with the list.

 Thanks!

Thanks for bringing that up Steve, they all, including the support
people, have done an exceptional job considering the hundreds of
components involved in these complex kits.

You might have a few of these yourself, if you're reading this message.

So, at this time of year, I'd like to say thanks to:
Alan, Rachel, Dina, Marina, Pennie, Leony, and Susan ...
and the many other Elecraft people who've helped make my hobby a lot more
