use a pair of JBL Control 2 powered studio monitors. They are very accurate
and, perhaps most importantly, do not seem to radiate detectable RF (or be
susceptible to it).

My KPA500 exhibits the same problem at times, don't know why. I turn off the
amp and then back on and then it will operate in OPER mode. I guess it is a
common problem.

If you use ALC between your KPA500 and your transceiver, check to see if
there is a permanent output from the KPA500. U8 on the KPA500 control board
is a known issue where the wrong part was specified up to at least serial
573 (mine)...
The fix is to obtain the correct part and replace it.

Just wanted to let you know that I fixed the problem. I re-soldered all the
switching diodes and also found a very small piece of clipping sticking to
the back side of the board. Don't know if it was the clipping or the
