[Elecraft] K3: RS232 - a salutary tale
Just in case this ever happens to one of you, here is my salutary tale of how I nearly started ripping my K3 to bits. I had put a 7Ah SLA battery on my big 13.8V supply just to top it up. This supply not only powers the K3/P3 but also my Samsung monitor, replacing the electrically noisy little psu it came with. I usually turn off the psu when I am neither using the monitor nor the radio. I turned it off and went to bed. Came home from work the next day and noticed the monitor was already on, so just went ahead and used it. Couple of hours later I turned on the K3 but noticed that I was unable to connect to it from Lp-bridge or any other software come to that. Swapped over USB to serial adapters, still the same problem. I thought to myself that there had to be a fault with the RS232 in the K3. Just as I was about to disconnect everything I noticed that the psu was off, I had been running the monitor and then later the K3 off the still connected SLA battery! The K3 was still receiving fine at the reduced voltage (my low voltage is set at 11V), but the 232 port clearly was not. Panic over, but only after an hour of fretting! I must be going senile. 73 Stephen G4SJP -- Sent from Gmail Mobile __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It was suggested he shorten the beam until it was ultimately a 50-ohm resistor of sufficient girth to accept reasonable power levels. Chuckles followed. Re: [Elecraft] Key Line Interrupter w/SteppIR
Hi Jack, Absolutely. If you transmit at 500 watts while the SDA-100 is tuning you can damage your DB-18 EHU. The interruptor doesn't provide the actual protection. It just forces you to use a separate key out cable between the K3 and KPA500. This is the cable that you would then route through a SteppIR control device which could be either the $82 Tuning Relay option for the SDA-100 or the $78 N8LP SteppIR Tuning Relay external device. You can get very specific advice at the SteppIR Yahoo group. http://www.prestosell.com/cgi-bin/order.pl?ref=Fluidmotionfm=2 http://www.telepostinc.com/STR.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SteppIR/ 73, Mike K2MK WE5ST wrote Do I need to use the Key Line Interrupter with this setup? Re: [Elecraft] Portable Antennas (mag loop)
I agree about the statement re height above ground which needed qualifiying a little particularly as they then made measurements somewhat less than that. The main thrust is about losses and the more removed from ground and nearby objects the less the loss due to the very high intensity of the electric field. Not sure if they specified a maximum power handling and I didn't see anything about inter-plate insulation so it was just dry air - (ie all the water is frozen on the ground). That probably also means the ground was not as conductive and lossy as it might be in the summer when the electrolytes are free to move (my guesswork). Wouldn't work too well in our wet UK climate! Great piece of analysis and engineering, deceptively simple. David G3UNA On 10/05/2012 11:11, Arthur Burke wrote: I bookmarked the site - thank you. Re: [Elecraft] Portable Antennas (mag loop)
I have a small magnetic loop that's used strictly for receiving. It's a Pixel loop with a preamp (from the same company) and I was astounded at how well it works. I located it about 10 feet up on a rotor, about 50 feet away from the house. It is incredibly broadbanded. While it doesn't quite hear what my K3 hears, it hears surprisingly well across a pretty wide spectrum. I use it mostly for broadcast band DXing, but it also does a pretty good job of keeping track of the county hunter CW net frequencies (40M, 30M and 20M). The loop is only about 3-feet in diameter - sells for around $400, which included the preamp. The preamp has a switching mechanism I connected to the PTT off our rigs (I share the shack with my wife, who is N4BU). Anything in the shack that trips the ARB-704 relay shuts off the preamp so it doesn't get fried. Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC improvements (MCU rev 4.50 / DSP 2.74)
Short version: It's still in the kitchen. Long version: This is still in pre-beta, being evaluated by a goodly number of hams who volunteered to test it before all the cooties were cleaned out. Some number of issues have been ferreted out, a couple serious, and there were some deliberate omissions to start, which after Wayne deals with them and reissues a public beta, won't be there to torture the rest of the adoptees. Historically these pre-beta's have sometimes gone through as many as 4 or 5 pre-beta cycles before being seen on the web site...and for good reason :). If you don't like running into cooties, you'll just have to wait it out. Or if that sounds like a fun game, send a note direct to Wayne (not the reflector) to join the pre-beta self-flagellation club. Just be warned that you run into stuff in the pre-beta club. That's the point. 73, Guy. On Thu, May 10, 2012 at 9:58 AM, W4CCS w4...@w4ccs.com wrote: Hi All: Just wondering if this was released.. So, Rick, will I need to schedule my TS-990 Check ride with the FCC or the FAA? Terry, W0FM I don't know if this is true or not, but I hear there is a simulator being developed by Kenwood. Sort of like an airliner simulator. Before you are authorized or certified to sit at the controls of a 990 on the air you have to take a class and spend time in the simulator. When you graduate you are then permitted to buy one and operate. After major firmware upgrades you might have to re-certify. I also hear that pins will be awarded and will be highly prized and worn on your cap, alongside your DXCC Honor Roll pin. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kenwood's new rig?
Perhaps the large display area has various options for what information gets shown-- a full-screen bandscope, waterfall, data, etc. (assuming the meter is not real). In which case you could still refer to the dedicated frequency display above the VFO knob. Anyhow, if the big display dies you would at least be able to know what your frequencies are until you could get the rig in to the TV repairman, hahah... 73, Drew AF2Z On Thu, 10 May 2012 10:23:13 -0500, Terry, W0FM wrote: Maybe I haven't tried hard enough, but I can't seem to see the reasoning behind the two displays that, apparently, show the same VFO A and VFO B information. Re: [Elecraft] K2 and Aether logging software for mac
Steve, If you have the K2/100, all you need is the proper cable to a serial port. If you have a K2/10 then you need the KIO2 in your K2. If there is a DB-9 connector in the AUX IO location, you have it (unless the prior owner just installed a connector to fill the hole). DO NOT connect a standard serial cable to that connector - it contains internal signals for attaching transverters, the KRC2, etc. You must use the special cable shown in the KIO2 (or KPA100) manual You may need a USB to serial adapter - get one that will run reliably at 4800 bps, many do not. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/10/2012 12:18 PM, Stephen Roberts wrote: I just got a K2 and want to hook it up to my logging software on my iMac. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kenwood's new rig?
The back cover of the latest QST shows a photo of the new Kenwood TS-990. Last night I kept looking at that picture wondering if I would ever use more then a half-dozen knobs or buttons. Even with the K3 I use very little. Indeed, the VFO and the filter width plus maybe AF and RF gain are the primary controls for my preferred CW mode (about 90 percent of contacts). I guess I should use more K3 buttons but I also use my KX1 a lot and those are the same buttons and controls I use on the K3. In fact I think those are the only buttons and controls on the KX1. 73, phil, K7PEH PEH's iPad On May 10, 2012, at 10:50 AM, Bob K6UJ k...@pacbell.net wrote: Terry, Thats probably why Terry, hihihihi. [Elecraft] Vedr: OT: Kenwood's new rig?
You need to count in the P3 Panadapter as well, that will rise the numbers of buttons on the K3. Not by much, but it will, and this is the only fair way to compare the TS-990 and the K3, because the TS-990 has the P3 functionality built in. But why are we discussing a Kenwood rig on the Elecraft list?? The TS-990 has at least dedicated 2 lists , so I don't see any reason to discuss the TS-990 on an Elecraft list. [Elecraft] K3; Eric, Wayne, a feature for the wish list
You have some excellent menu options in the K3, even a built-in 2-tone generator for checking SSB. There is the SW Tone option to aid visually impaired people, and others, know when something is turned on, or off, by it's tones. Also, I understand there is Elecraft software that speaks from a computer as controls are used. I think your f/w and s/w are excellent. Some of the hams I round-table with are up in the years, and struggle to hear. I use a headset mike which makes no mechanical sound when I release the remote PTT. They can't tell when I release it unless I say 'over'. I optioned CW+SSB, but I often forget to tap the paddle when I'm done talking. Knowing I run a K3, I have been asked if it could be optioned to beep when the PTT is released. For your consideration, and thanks. Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies
Someone had recommended the crimper for Anderson Power Poles from Powerwerx. While I was looking at that, I looked at their power supplies. The SPS-30DM looked interesting, so I ordered one. Ordered Tuesday afternoon, and I received the shipping notice and UPS tracking number the same day. Today it arrived. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I have to give Powerwerx credit for fast delivery! Of course they're located less than 50 miles from here; even closer than HRO. I was surprised at how small it is! It comes in at 6 x 5 x 2-1/2 and weighs only 3.7 pounds. Certainly, it's smaller and lighter-weight than my Astron RS-35M. Rating is 25 A continuous and it has front-panel meters for monitoring voltage and current. Also conveniently located on the front panel is a switch for a continuous supply voltage of 14.1 or variable from 5-16 volts. This p/s should be ideal, not only for powering the new K3 but also for charging the NiMH batteries for the KX3. 7273 de Jim - AD6CW On 5/6/2012 7:42 AM, Phil Hystad wrote: I have one SAMLEX and three Astron power supplies and they have operated perfectly since they day I bought them. [Elecraft] AGC comparison FW 4.48 vs 4.50 vs 4.51. My face is red
After I posted my glowing report on FW 4.50, I received an email from N6XI suggesting that I should try reversing the two K3's used in the comparison. I tried that today, and was astonished to see that the big differences I was seeing were in the radios, and not the firmware. It turned out to be two different pieces of external hardware that were causing the big differences - quite a fiasco on my part. The bottom line is that I can't detect much difference in CW performance of the three versions of the software. The signal dropout that was present in 4.50 has been fixed. If there are differences in cw performance among the various firmware versions, they are subtle. I'm sorry for the over-enthusiastic initial posting. [Elecraft] K2 -15Mtr birdies?
I hadn't noticed this before as I don't normally operate in this part of 15 metres. As I tuned across 15 metres I noticed a couple of birdies, switching between the antenna and dummy load didn't make them go away. On CW mode the first is at 21028.63 KHz and the tone changes rapidly, maybe 100Hz or more for every 10Hz change on the tuning. The second one is at around 21036.20 KHz. Re: [Elecraft] Internal keyer
Paul, Did you turn VOX on? CW on the K3 requires VOX to transmit. Hope this helps. 73, --Ian Ian Kahn, KM4IK Roswell, GA EM74ua km4ik@gmail.com K3 #281, P3 #688 HRD v5.x/6.0 Test Team On 5/10/2012 11:14 PM, Paul Ormandy ZL4PW wrote: Hi all, Just set up the internal keyer memories and they work accordingly, except they don't key the transmitter. Re: [Elecraft] K3; Eric, Wayne, a feature for the wish list
That's odd, I've never heard one on HF. Been a ham since the 70's. And, you have never been a participant in our round-tables. So if we were to use one, it should not bother you. I'm glad you are not opinionated. 73, Rich - Original Message - From: Gary Gregory To: Richard Fjeld Cc: elecraft posting Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2012 3:38 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3; Eric, Wayne, a feature for the wish list Oh no please, no more Roger Beeps...my hearing get's rattled with the sharp tone generated by some of these Rogef Beeps heard on 20M lately. There is enough beeps, squeeks, rattles from clunky microphones, over driven compression, key clicks and the list goes on. Lets not add more noises to the bands. Placing a sign on the radio with OVER in bold type could serve as a reminder for those of us who forget at times to end an over in an appropriate way and that creates no additional noise. Using headphones here all the time I have noticed when working weak signals that when a Roger Beep is used it produces a sharp spike in the audio which is distracting and in my case very annoying. I would strongly voice my opposition to such an addition if it were to be considered.
