Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA USB Keyboard

2012-07-26 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Iain,

Thanks for the message link but while I can view CW, RTTY, and PSK text on
my external monitor, connecting a standard USB Dell keyboard to the P3 does
not permit me to send PSK or RTTY. I tried all of the Data modes and I can
send PSK and RTTY via my paddle but not from a P3 attached keyboard. So I'm
still wondering if the keyboard input part of this beta release has been
implemented.

Re: [Elecraft] KX-3 - Thank you Elecraft for dropping over 10lbs off my pack weight

2012-07-26 Thread Steve KC8QVO
The reason for the FT-857D is it is what I had. By the way, the current draw
on receive is closer to 1/2 an amp, 500mA, not 1 amp.

My 857 has been over hundreds of miles in the backpack through the
Appalachians, some of KY, and southern Ohio. A more typical trip for us is 3
days in the Appalachians and around 16-22 miles.

The solar panel is a few of Powerfilm's 150mA panels taped together. They
are like solar bumper stickers. Here is a picture from when I was in Canada
back in June:
http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o117/KC8QVO/Canada%202012/IMG_9209.jpg
http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o117/KC8QVO/Canada%202012/IMG_9209.jpg

I used solder wick to join the panels in parallel - it will take flexing to
allow the panel to fold up - a flat pack 2 sections wide.

The solar panel is in the bottom left of the picture. The antenna is a
Buddistick with a paddle as a support. I wasn't backpacking here, just
camped for 4 days.

Here is a better picture of the hammock:

I guess it's too early in the morning. Of course you are in PSK-D or FSK-D or
you wouldn't be copying data.

So that leaves my question about the Caps Lock light working. Also, do you

I found with a couple of keyboards that I had to unplug and re-plug them to
keep them working.

A problem, BTW, I am not having with the keyboard that was the original subject

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - sound in problem

2012-07-26 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi John,

If you are able to turn up the compression to something other than zero you
are obviously using an SSB mode. You really want to use DATA MODE A. In that
mode the K3 really makes digital modes easy because it turns off features
that you should not be using and it makes the front panel MIC potentiometer
the quick and easy way to adjust your input level. While transmitting
(either on the air or in TEST MODE) you would turn the pot until you see 4
or 5 steady bars on the ALC display with the next bar blinking. If this
doesn't do the trick then you are either not bringing the audio into the
LINE IN connector on the back of the K3 or your PC line output needs to be
cranked up using the audio control panel.

Mike K2MK

John,

Also keep in mind you want to set the soundcard/line-in gain so that
you are getting 4 bars of ALC and the 5th bar just flickering. This
ensures the correct setting for the DSP to manage the power. It is
not like other radios where you want NO ALC for PSK.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - sound in problem

2012-07-26 Thread Bob
You might view it as two different routes to a solution, but the real
reason is to have a working solution for SSB (via Mic) AND a different one
for Data. The Data selection disables equalization and compression for you
so you don't have to remember to do it manually.

I am constantly changing modes from CW to SSB to DATA, so having the
appropriate levels/gains/presets for each is a real convenience.

Hope you get things going soon!

is no asterisk on either the large monitor or the P3. I did plug and unplug
the keyboard.

I'm not going to pursue this further as I'm happy with PC software control
of RTTY and PSK. I'll debug the problem later when the P3 is able to do some
other interesting keyboard related things.

I am not sure why nobody mentioned the KX1. It has 4 watts output, 4 bands,
weighs next to nothing, 55 mA on receive, and with a 4500mA SLA (1 lb) or the
equivalent LiFePo which is half the weight and Par Ef-40-20-10 and a spool of
wire for 80m the entire group is perhaps 2 lbs or so - now that is light (no

Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA USB Keyboard

2012-07-26 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Mike,

If you look on your external display at the very bottom of the screen you
should see a blue status bar. On the left it will show either rx or TX
based on whether the K3 is transmitting or not. On the right there will be
a small asterisk if the SVGA card detects a valid USB keyboard (Apple
keyboards appear to not work) . If you see the asterisk, you should be able
to type characters and they will show up in the Tx window which is the data
window shown underneath the Rx window. Another way to check is hold down
Ctrl-Alt-H and see if you see the help screen.

Regarding BIOS keyboard etc. The USB stack we are using makes mention of
the requirement for IBM PC compatible keyboards. During my initial testing
I was able to find that all the PC USB keyboards we have in house work fine.
Since these keyboards are relatively inexpensive, I would suggest simply
buying one.

If you're still running into problems getting the transmit to work, give me
a call at Elecraft.

73,

Paul

[Elecraft] KX3 speaker grille

2012-07-26 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi all,

Some KX3 owners have reported issues with the internal speaker. During
our search for the cause, we found that the fabric grille could
vibrate if the volume was very high, so we started removing the grilles.

But based on a month's worth of field reports and our own further
testing, we've concluded that in nearly all cases, edge-to-edge
contact between the top and bottom covers is to blame, not the grille.
As long as the grille is not creased and is kept flat when the speaker
screws are tightened, it should stay out of contact range of the
speaker cone.

We're taking steps to correct the case issues (see recent posts on
this topic). As for the grille, we've decided to put it back in, both
in factory-assembled units and in the kit instructions. The grille has
some utility in keeping out dirt, etc.

If your grille was removed and you'd like to put one back in, we'll
send you a new gasket/grille assembly at no charge. The installation
is pretty easy and should only take a few minutes.

My apologies for any convenience.

Wayne

Wayne,

Glad to hear it. This was my gut feeling when I got my kit, and I decided
not to follow that part of the assembly guide and leave the grille in
place. Now I'm glad I did! I'll follow whatever recommendations you come up
with for the remaining vibrations, but on my unit it's not much of an
issue, and only occurs at a very narrow range of frequencies.

I hope you'll be doing similar research as to the possible cause of the
KXPD3 issues, and I'm going to hold off trying any radical mods until I get
some conclusions from your end.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: QRP watering holes?

2012-07-26 Thread Brian Hunt
Give the QRP Fox Hunts a try. Details here: http://www.qrpfoxhunt.org/

It's a weekly blast. For 90 minutes you, along with many other hounds
try to make contact with two foxes. A QSO with proper exchange of
info - RST, State, Name, Power - earns you a pelt. Maximum power is 5
watts but you can try QRPp - 1 watt or less - to earn your pelt.

The Summer season is in full swing on 20 meters with Thursday night
hunts. There is also a winter season with hunts on 80 and 40 meters on
Tuesday and Thursday nights respectively. Check out the website for
rules, tips and schedules. And join the QFox Yahoo group -
q...@yahoogroups.com - for hunt announcements and chat.

You'll love it!

Also, there is activity on both 7030 and 7040. For many years 7040 was *the*

right on the bottom end of their phone band. So North American hams started
shifting to 7030 to work them.

RF board. I have problems with these 4 test points:

P1 pin 16

P1 pin 17

U4 pin 6

U4 pin 7

My DMM sometimes shows resistance on these points, then it climbs until it
indicates an open. Sometimes it just shows infinity. I've checked for solder
bridges, unsoldered pins, etc. Actually took pictures of the top and bottom
of the board so I could look at them full-screen on the PC. (The pictures
are here: http://www.kd2uj.com/Telegraphy2/default.html)

The other 9 test points seem to be OK.

The meter is an Equus 3320 Auto-Ranging Digital Multimeter. Bought it on
Amazon.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Bob

Re: [Elecraft] OT: QRP watering holes?

2012-07-26 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Whenever I work the QRP frequencies, I assume the other station may be
rock-bound or using a very simple direct-conversion receiver that has no
offset control so their transmit frequency is off of their receive frequency
by the frequency of the beat note.

I always assume they may be spread out as much as 1 kHz. If I call CQ, I
tune up a kHz or two and down a kHz or two listening for calls.

Also, when running QRO I stay at least 1 kHz above or below the QRP
frequency to avoid 'stepping on' a QRP operator using a simple receiver with
minimal selectivity.

That's a nice feature of 30 meters. Once can only crush 200 watt rocks
there, Hi!

Hello,

Hams using the little Rock-Mite 500mw pocket radios are a bit below the
usual frequencies, mostly around 7029 and 14059, CW.

There are about 9000 of these floating around...

Re: [Elecraft] [K1] RF Board Resistance Checks

2012-07-26 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

I don't think you have any problem if the resistance read is high and
climbs in value (even to infinity).
The symbol means greater than so anything greater than the
indicated value is good and passes the test.

The resistance climbing is due to electrolytic capacitors charging up to
the voltage used by your DMM.
If you have resistance readings lower than the value indicated, then
that is a problem that needs to be found.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Glitch with KXPD3- UPDATE

2012-07-26 Thread Ken Lopez
Thomas,

The first KXPD3 I got with my rig was behaving very erratically, dropping dits
or dahs at random, and often locking up and sending strings of dahs or dits,
even after many adjustments. Maddening.

After I made my comments on the reflector, Wayne sent a private email
suggesting that I have Customer Service send me a new one for exchange so that
they could analyze mine. Moments later, Howard from CS contacted me and
suggested the same.

Yesterday I took advantage of the fact that Im in Monterey for a week, only 20
minutes from Watsonville. I dropped my four year old K3 off for the hardware
updates and to add a KXV3a for a soon to be ordered P3. The K3 had never left
the desk top in four years, and works flawlessly.

At the same time, I met with Howard of CS to examine and exchange KXPD3
paddles. Mine was behaving badly, and Howard took it apart and made some
changes and adjustments. It was better, but still dropping dits.

The new KXPD3 is quite a bit better so far. I have only had a short time to
test it, but it does seem like an improvement. I know they are working on
solving the issues with the paddles, so I'll be patient and wait for the
ultimate solution, whatever that may be. I know they are looking at
contacts, and other issues to solve the problems.

Thanks to Wayne for being so attentive, and Howard for the service help and
swap. Also, thanks to Dale, who is tackling my K3 and trying to have it ready
before I return to LA. As an added bonus, I ran into Wayne in the hallway. I
hadn't spoken to him in a while, and that was a pleasant interlude.

All in all, a rewarding visit. And I'll be back in a bit to pick up the K3 if
all goes well.

Thanks Elecraft!

[Elecraft] KX1 vs. K1

2012-07-26 Thread Mike Morrow
Ariel wrote:

I am not sure why nobody mentioned the KX1. It has 4 watts output,
4 bands, weighs next to nothing, 55 mA on receive, and with a 4500mA
SLA (1 lb) or the equivalent LiFePo which is half the weight...

The KX1 is a really outstanding QRP radio. But...

1. It can not cover any ham band higher than 20m due to limitations of
the DDS circuitry. As solar activity cycle 24 progresses, these
are precisely the bands that will provide the best and most
interesting QRP operation. The stock K1 is ready with factory
support for 15m and 17m. Then, 10m and 12m is easily feasible as
described here by ones who have developed the necessary KFL1-2 filter
changes for that. I'm not sure why Elecraft has never produced
a 10m/12m filter parts kit during the K1's 12-year existence (all
the way back to the end of solar cycle 22).

2. Its KXAT1 ATU only creates 124 different combinations of L and C and
L-C configuration within a very limited range of L and C. By contrast:

ATU L/C Combos L Range in NL Steps C Range in NC Steps
   KXAT1 124 0 to 4.5 uH in 8 steps 0 to 140 pF in 8 steps
   KAT1 1020 0 to 4.9 uH in 16 steps 0 to 300 pF in 32 steps
   T1 32764 0 to 7.5 uH in 128 steps 0 to 1300 pF in 128 steps
   KAT3 131068 0 to 17.4 uH in 256 steps 0 to 2600 pF in 256 steps
KXAT3 ---Said to be the same as the KAT3---

Thus, even the K1's ATU KAT1 has considerably versatility.

3. The KX1 has only a three-pole crystal filter. It is possible to
hear both sidebands of a strong signal. The K1 has a four-pole
crystal filter, and that makes a noticeable improvement.

There are other issues in a KX1 to K1 comparison, but they don't need
discussing now. From this limited list only items 1 and 3 are important
to me, because I don't use antennas that require a lot of reactance
insertion by a tuner.

If the higher bands are not desired I think that the KX1 is an amazing
rig. It's certainly the smallest and most energy efficient one that
Elecraft markets. Its most serious issue, IMHO, occurs at time of
build from the trickiness of backfitting the 80m/30m band parts. Who
wouldn't want their KX1 to be fully capable of all four bands?

If I couldn't have a K1, I could be happy with a KX1.

Mike / KK5F

The solar panels came from Powerfilm directly. I picked them up at Dayton 2

together it would be about 30 watts. I don't have them all put together,

Here is the website:

They are the MTP15-75's. I thought they were 150mA each, but they're only
50mA. There is a 150mA version though. That might offer more wattage per
ounce.

 Ariel

Ariel,

The KX1 is a great option too. I had the pleasure of operating one for a
weekend. I did not get to take it on a trek, just at home. I borrowed it for
a presentation on Ham radio I did at OSU. At the time I had not made the
migration to Elecraft myself. I was highly considering a KX1 because of its
size and weight for the trail. However, I took in to account how I use my
radios and where I use them the most. The KX1 would have been a trail-only
rig. I had been wanting a K2 so I weighed the options and the K2 won. Now I
am pretty glad I held off on the KX1 now that the KX3 came along. I did miss
the solder melting, but it was also nice to power up and do something with
the rig the same day I opened the box.

That having been said, the KX3 is my ideal backpacking rig - and even beyond
that. Elecraft packed so much in to this little rig that it is hard to call
it a compromise. I don't mean this to be negative in any way, but I would
call the K1 and KX1 compromise rigs for the reason that they aren't
full-featured rigs (select bands and CW only, vs. all bands all modes). When
you look at what the KX3 has to offer, in as small and light of a package
that it is, you really have to look twice to realize that, no you aren't
dreaming, it really does THAT too.

To each their own, but I think I've come across the best thing since sliced
bread. My backpacking buddies can even join in the fun - it does SSB so I
don't have to throw the headphones on and tap out CW in confinement. The
next time I get flown around for work I can throw this in my luggage, not
take up too much space or weight, and not feel like I left anything behind.
Same goes for weekend trips to visit family and friends. It's small and
light, without missing a thing. Once the 2m module comes out I can even
leave an HT behind.

when it 'failed' it would only work if I cranked up the CMP to 30 or so

Question - 'why' has it worked fine for 'years' and now doesn't ?

I can obviously use DATA-A - but I personally preferred not have to switch

[Elecraft] K3 - remote control head

2012-07-26 Thread Bill
I wonder if the K3's (K3/0) front panel will ever be available as a
stand alone device similar the Kenwood TS-480?

No big box behind the panel, just a line to the transceiver - which is
operated remote from where it is mounted on the side of my desk. It is
very handy to be able to move that control panel all over my desk. This
is similar to the Yaesu 857D and the Icom 706 and 7000 series.

It is not rocket science - just another purchase for the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - sound in problem

2012-07-26 Thread Matt Maguire
Running compression with digimodes is generally a bad idea, as it can
distort the signal (depending on the modulation scheme). If you are going
to use the USB mode on the KX3 for ditigal modes, you should set the CMP
setting to '0', and adjust the PC output level/mic gain to get four steady
bars on the ALC meter, then set the power control to the desired level.
You should also ensure that the MIC BIAS and MIC BTN menu items are set to
OFF.

Probably missing something stupid... WSPR and PSK etc did not show any

(they used too)... After 'messing around' I got a signal out by cranking up
 CMP from 7 to 24...
this seems to me to be the 'wrong' way ? Advise appreciated (including
manual reference if I have missed it)

Re: [Elecraft] Microphones - Yaesu MH-31

Don,

Your numbering was backwards from what I used, but I translated the numbers
from the other direction (made 8 = 1, 1 = 8, and the others in between to
match) and got the same pin designations and wire colors. However, I took
(your numbers) pin 2 and pin 5 and grounded them to the shell together (pin
2 shows as mic ground in the schematics so I figured I'd ground it to the
regular ground also). After looking over your numbers I moved the regular
ground (your pin 2) to ring 2. This gave me the same results as before.

If I crank the power up I can get some deflection in the power meter, but I
can't get the ALC meter to budge on max mic gain and max compression.

I just tested the output with a pair of headphones on. I took the
compression off (0) and as I increased it the audio volume from the monitor
circuit got louder.

Just out of curiosity - what are some others using for microphones and what
settings are you finding work for those microphones?

My experience with other rigs is that if the mic gain is too high the audio
distorts, likewise if the compression is too high it distorts. Here I have
both gain and compression max'ed out and seemingly not getting enough. That
doesn't make much sense to me, but I know the KX3 is a different rig. Is
that perhaps a change that can be made in software? Or am I at the limits of
the hardware?

Thanks very much. I’m sure that’s the right answer. It must be, it’s the one

I remember when I built my K1. The manual said 1K ohm meaning infinite, or
5ohms meaning 0 ohm or shorted connections. Made me confused. I think as
long as it confirms to what the manual says it's ok.

Hi,

I'm up to page 29 in the manual and doing the first resistance checks on the
RF board. I have problems with these 4 test points:

P1 pin 16

P1 pin 17

U4 pin 6

U4 pin 7

My DMM sometimes shows resistance on these points, then it climbs until it
indicates an open. Sometimes it just shows infinity. I've checked for solder
bridges, unsoldered pins, etc. Actually took pictures of the top and bottom
of the board so I could look at them full-screen on the PC. (The pictures
are here: http://www.kd2uj.com/Telegraphy2/default.html)

The other 9 test points seem to be OK.

The meter is an Equus 3320 Auto-Ranging Digital Multimeter. Bought it on
Amazon.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Bob
