[Elecraft] KXV3A

2012-10-21 Thread Bob Henderson
Could someone please point me to schematics for the KXV3A or otherwise help
with identification of a component?

KXV3 schematics are bundled with those for the K3 but I have been unable to
find any updated to KXV3A.

My KXV3A has suffered a failure due to high level RF while on receive. The
burnt out component appears to be D5, located between L1 L2. None of
these components are shown in the KXV3 schematic. I am particularly
interested to learn the part number of D5.

Assistance appreciated.

Many thanks.

The schematics dated June 2010 have the KXV3A.
D5 is a BAP64-04. Looks like it is being used as a switch controlled by

I can email you the schematics if you wish (7 MB).

The Plantronics headset I tried performed poorly.

What worked quite well for me was a Yamaha CM-500 and a Microsoft LifeChat

I don't think you'll find any off-the-shelf headset with a compatible PTT
switch. You can use the TX button on the front of the rig or VOX - both
these headsets work well on VOX.

My thanks to those who replied to my question.
I now have the Begali Intrepid Key working correctly.
The answer to my question is as follows:

Turn the bug onto its back and you will see 3 screws in the connection
compartment.
2 are holding the side rails in place and 1 is earth. connect the 2 that
are holding
the rails together with a jumper and also connect these to the tip of
your jack plug.
Then connect the 3rd screw to the sheath (ground)of the jack plug.
The 2 rails are held above ground by plastic stand-offs.

Many thanks Fred. I believed I had the most recent schematics but I was

It's as well I asked. Rather a pity though, as Farnell hold the -05

[Elecraft] 2m Transverter

Hello -
I was thinking about adding 2m capability to my K3.
Can anyone tell me if the XV144 External Transverter is all I need to do this,

My intention is to use it for two meter cw via local repeaters which I can
easily hit with ten watts.
Currently have only the stock 2.7 filter.

Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter

2012-10-21 Thread David G4DMP
The XV144 works very well with the K3, Dave, and you don't need anything
else, not even the KXV3A which is necessary for the internal K44XV
transverter. The K3 with its stock 2.7 kHz filter is fine unless you
wish to use FM in which case you would need the KFL3B-FM 13 kHz filter.

I do not know how you would use CW via a repeater. We do not have CW
repeaters here in the UK.

I see there is someone currently selling a XV144 in the UK for 200ukp
which is a very good price.

The K2/10 includes the following options:

Will include a spare K2 top and unopened bottle of Elecraft touch up paint for

[Elecraft] 2m Transverter

2012-10-21 Thread David Pratt
Hello Dave -

What I omitted to say in my msg on the reflector was that you WILL need
the KXV3 installed in your K3. When I mentioned not needing the KXV3A I
was making an assumption that your K3 already has the original KXV3
installed. Apart from the power cable the only additional cables you
will need are a pair of BNC-BNC cables to connect the XV144 to the K3.
You can drive the K3 with just 1mW of power from the XV144.

I hope that helps.

I have played with a KX3. I own a K3/100. I built a KX1 and K1. For some
reason I just love the K2. It just feels right to me. I have my K3 and my

this is. Maybe it is the simplicity of the rig. I don't know but I just had
to build another K2! I sold one (mistake) then inherited my dads after he
became a silent key. I will put his on the shelf to remember him and use my
new one when done. I think it will be a basic K2/10 with no SSB and only the
DSP and ANT tuner.

You can use the tip contact of the ACC2 jack as a PTT input. Set

You can plug your key directly into the ACC2 jack if it has a 2.5-mm

manually hit the XMIT button, then it went to TX normally, so I know
that it works. It's just not seeing the key in any voice mode. It
 only works in CW mode.

Is there a way to enable this for all modes, in the KX3? It seems
 that
the voice modes are looking for a separate PTT switch, which I do not
have. I'm using a headset originally intended for use with a
 computer,
and it works well, except for the lack of a PTT switch.

The CW key is a big convenient button, just waiting for me to press
 it.
Is there a menu option that I'm missing?

 Thank you!

BTW, *really* liking the KX3. Wish I had remembered to bring mine to
 the KX3 lovefest aka Pacificon!

Did you install the driver for the cable? Macintosh does not

it recently. I didn't have to reboot after installing it.

2012-10-21 Thread Scott Manthe
Dave,
I don't want to assume anything, so I have to ask you why in the world
you'd want to do CW over a repeater? Are the repeater owners hip with
the idea? Thirty years ago a group of us tried to run CW practice on an
unused local repeater, with the owners permission and the support of the
local club, and that went over like a lead balloon. Not sure it would be
any different now.

[Elecraft] Bugs? (KX3 AFSK A, and RXSBNL)

2012-10-21 Thread Mark n2qt
I am getting used to my new KX3 and have what look like bugs to me. Using the
latest
software 1.23/.99
AFSK A is supposed to be LSB (and actually indicates LSB on the screen) but
when
decoding the audio with a sound card based decoder I must invert the tones
to get
good decoding. FSK D audio is in the correct sense (not needing REV on the
external
decoder so I think I’m right).
IN RXSBNL instructions
In the optional enhancement section, for rx shift = 8

it indicates that FL1 will be flashing but then in the
next section says

Make sure FL3 is still selected
shouldn't this be FL1 since we are offset?

Under future enhancements,
it would be GREAT if external FSK could be implemented, using the CW key input
perhaps???

[Elecraft] K3 AGC settings w/ MCU 4.51

[Elecraft] P3 - Question

2012-10-21 Thread Fred Jensen
My P3 appears to have gone deaf.

Feeding it with my service monitor at 8.215 MHz, it shows -100 dBm with
10 mv input. The baseline is at -140 dBm. This seems like a very high
signal input for -100 dBm on the display, anyone know what it should be?

I fed the IF output from my K3 into my FT-847, and it seems to be fine,
the WWV second ticks go to S9.

I've been trying out a new antenna and I seem to have quite a bit of RF
in the shack from it. That's about the time that S9 signals disappeared
on the P3.

[Elecraft] [KX3] Batteries - rechargeable AA's

2012-10-21 Thread Steve KC8QVO
I have a 3 day backpacking trip coming up next weekend and will be taking my
KX3 along with my solar panel/charge controller.

In the past I have used a 7Ah SLA with the rig (works pretty well) but it is
heavy. I want to switch out to 8 AA's this trip to see how it works out.

What recommendations on NiMh AA cells do you all have that I can source
locally? I have bought some batteries that have been decent and some that
are terrible over the years, the best ones I found were at Radio Shack. What
others have you had good luck with? I'd rather stay away from Walmart and
other convenience stores. How about Batteries Plus? I haven't ever bought
batteries from them before (cell type, my SLA came from there).

My trip takes me along the Appalachian Trail and around Sugarland Mountain
in TN/NC. I'll be sure to get some pictures.

[Elecraft] K2: with KPA500, experience anyone?

2012-10-21 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Andrew,

I connect the KPA500 with K2 via a PTT RCA cable and a coaxial jumper.  The
internal frequency counter of KPA500 can detect the operating band and do the
band switching.  K2 will drive the KPA500 to some 250w (key down).  Integration
is straight forward as long as you have a keying device for the PTT in your
K2.  K2 delivers more power than KX3 under the same supply voltage of 13.8v as
measured by my LP100A.  Therefore, you will expect more power output from
KPA500 if it is driven by K2 instead of KX3.

Johnny VR2XMC

I'm interested in hearing people's experiences (good or bad) with
using the K2 to drive the KPA500.

In particular, I'm interested to hear how well the integration works,
especially regarding QSK and high-speed CW timing.

Off-list is fine.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Batteries - rechargeable AA's

2012-10-21 Thread Rich
Steve, the advice I got, a combination of list advice and internet
reviews, is to go with the low self-discharge NiMH made in Japan, and
the Sanyo Eneloop seem to have many followers, with the top of that line
the Sanyo Eneloop XX batteries. Advice was to stay away from the
Chinese products as too variable.

I could not find XXs locally, and settled for the Batteries Plus
Japanese NiMH batteries this week. No reference to discharge. I may
regret that. Will buy a set of the XXs when I can. Too early for reviews.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Batteries - rechargeable AA's

2012-10-21 Thread Gary
I've been following the KX3 battery threads from a distance since the
beginning and would like to offer my own suggestion. Hopefully I'm not
duplicating previous info.

I have several portable transceivers with AA battery cases. My current
battery choice for most of them is the Sanyo 2700mAh AA. I have a couple
dozen in daily use and have been very satisfied with them overall. In some
radios they don't perform well but in most I've used they work very well.
I've been purchasing them from http://www.batteriesamerica.com and
charging/cycling them with a Powerex MH-C9000 charger/analyzer. If anyone
has already tried these in a KX3 please let me know how it worked out.

By the way, http://www.batteriesamerica.com has the eneloop XX batteries
as well.

[Elecraft] K2 SSB audio problem

2012-10-21 Thread George Winship, NC5G
After 11 years of operating and many unsolicited reports of great audio, I am
suddenly getting not so good reports from my K2/100. Present setup is
K2/100, KAT100, KPA500, and resonant antennas on 75 and 40 meters. Very
rarely do SSB on any other bands. Stations seem to have trouble describing
the problem. Reports vary from fuzziness, distortion, to clipping. I
bypassed the tuner and amp, hooking feed line directly to K2/100 and also
turned the power down to ten watts to shut off the KPA100 and problem
persists. No difference between MH2 and CM500 mics. These test were done
with stations who know my rig and my voice. This is an early K2/100. All
mods were done years ago to K2, SSB, and KPA100. Receive audio is unchanged.
Visual inspection of boards look OK.

As a further check, I connected my KX3 to amp and antennas with great
results.

Any suggestions?

Thanks es 73,

George, NC5G

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio problem

2012-10-21 Thread Don Wilhelm
George,

Ask yourself what has changed between good operation and now.
Have you re-arranged your shack? The K2 is sensitive to devices with
transformers positioned within 2 feet of the left side panel - the
transformer's magnetic field modulates the K2 VFO.

As a test, move your K2 away from everything else on the desk and run a
test.

If this proves to be your problem, you can install the optional mod kit,
VCOSHLDKT.

[Elecraft] K2: Modulation on CW signal

2012-10-21 Thread Calvin Jones
Hello, First time posting to the list.

Completed K2 #7239 today. Made a contact with a station on cw, 10 watts,
7.1065 mhz. He reported back that my CW signal had a very heavy ripple on the
signal.

I connected the output to a Oscilloscope and was able to see a ripple on the
waveform when keying a solid carrier at a few watts. Also listened to my
signal on another receiver and could hear a very bad modulated CW tone.

This is a barebones K2 with no options installed at this point. Every
measurement in the testing was all within specs and the alignment of the radio
had no problems. Power output on all bands was OK.

Thanks for any help in correcting this problem.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Question

2012-10-21 Thread Alan Bloom
It could be a lot of things, but I would first suspect the cables. The
BNC cable from the K3 to the P3 is easy to check if you have another one
to temporarily swap. There is also a small-diameter cable inside the P3
with TMP connectors on each end that connect the rear-panel preamp
board to the front-panel board. You might try making sure the connector
is well-seated on both ends. Press the connector in with a twisting
motion.

signal input for -100 dBm on the display, anyone know what it should be?

I fed the IF output from my K3 into my FT-847, and it seems to be fine,
the WWV second ticks go to S9.

I've been trying out a new antenna and I seem to have quite a bit of RF
in the shack from it. That's about the time that S9 signals disappeared
 on the P3.
