Several years ago I had a problem with one of my K3 encoders and 
obtained a replacement E850239 from Elecraft under warranty. However, I 
noticed that the two halves of the encoder had started to separate. They 
were held together by small aluminium rivets. By carefully removing the 
rivets, one by one, and replacing them with small screws of a suitable 
size the encoder could be repaired.  If your problem is with the encoder 
halves separating, Evert, that might be worth a try.

Josep - If you do not have the DVR installed in your K3, go to the
Config Menu and check the KDVR3 entry.  It should say 'not inSt'. If it
says 'nor' then turn it to 'not inSt'.

I hope that solved the problem.

[Elecraft] XV144 Crystal Oven

[David Pratt]

I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has a crystal oven for the XV
series of transverters.  The Elecraft part number is E980076.  The oven
in my XV144 has gone open circuit.

I have attempted to search the Elecraft website for one without success
and have even entered an enquiry but have had no response.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I would love to go back to 1955, Wayne, using homebrew equipment, when I
was first licensed (as G3KEP) and we used condensers instead of
capacitors.

Even in 2000 when I built my first K2 MoJo, I only had to press the key
and got a pileup calling me.

Nowadays, with the advent of PLT, CFL & LED lamps and switched mode
PSUs, I have an S9 noise level. So signals have to be over S9 for me to
work them.  Still, that should be OK for contests when every signal is
5NN ;-)

I am not sure that many people would need one in Europe, Tony.  At

I am delighted to report back that changing the wire from pin-5 to pin-6
has done the trick. DTMF tones work fine on the K3 as do also the UP and
DOWN buttons with MIC BTN On in the CONFIG menu.  The DTMF tones also
work on the K2.

What is surprising, however, is that everything works equally well
whether MIC BIAS is On or Off. I would have thought that the voltage on
pin-6 of the front panel socket would have gone off when MIC BIAS is set
to Off, but that is evidently not the case.

Thank you, Joe, Don and Chuck Jack; the mic is an MC-48 which is shown
as an electret on the schematic. I shall certainly swap the plug
connection from pin-5 to pin-6 and give it another go. I note that the
UP and DOWN buttons give some strange effects so those need my attention
too.

Well, in the absence of the long awaited DTMF software enhancement for
the K3  I have at last bought myself a Kenwood microphone, fitted with
an 8-pin plug that mates with the K3. But I have had no success in
getting the DTMF feature to work :-(

As the Kenwood mic is electret I have switched bias on with MIC SEL
although, surprisingly, the microphone seems to work equally well with
it switched off!

Does anyone know how to get the Kenwood DTMF mic to work with the K3?

[Elecraft] DTMF tone support on the K3

Do you know whether there is any progress on this, Lyle?  I have been 
struggling with a handheld DTMF device, held close to the K3 microphone 
for years! It is somewhat cumbersome and I look forward to the long 
awaited DTMF feature on the K3 which I think has been on the software 
list for years.


I realize the KX3 has that feature, but unfortunately the output power 
of the KX3-2M module is just not sufficient to get me into my nearest 
Echolink repeater reliably. The K3 with its K144XV would be just fine.


I could buy a Kencomsu rig specifically for the purpose but I would far 
prefer to use my trusted K3 than go to the opposition.

Andy - Without the K3EXREF connected, the REF CAL frequency will be
fixed and the K3 will drift, albeit very slightly, particularly when it
is first switched on.  With K3EXREF locked with your 10MHz standard the
REF CAL frequency will vary to correct any drift in the K3. If you
measure the output frequency of your K3 with an accurate frequency
meter, such as a digital counter locked to a standard, you will find
that your K3 is stable to within +/- a couple of Hertz.

Yes, you could be missing something, Tighe.
There is an addendum to Page 4 which reads:

After installing the K3EXREF module, you must enable it in the K3 menu
before it can be used if your K3 is equipped with MCU firmware 4.57 or
later.

Enable the K3EXREF module as follows:

* Turn the K3 on. Confirm that TECH mode is on (CONFIG:TECH MD On).
* Turn the VFO B knob to locate the CONFIG:REF CAL menu entry.
* Tap the REV / 2 switch and note that the VFO B display flashes between
XREF IN (K3EXREF module active) and XREF OUT (K3EXREF module disabled).
Tap the REV /2 switch so that XREF IN is displayed.

Ii is important to disable the module in the menu if you remove the
K3EXREF module in the future.

Michael - You don't need a computer to send and decode PSK31 and CW. 
Provision for decoding and sending PSK31 and CW are already built into 
the KX3 firmware. All you need to do is to plug a paddle into your KX3 
and set up the menu accordingly and you're away.

That would be no good to me, Ken, WWVB is not receivable in Great Britain.  We 
would need MSF on 60 kHz.  Remember that the KX3  K3 are global transceivers

I have just measured my K144XV power output with an accurate power output meter 
and find that with the K3 set for 1mW the output is 10.5W.  But setting the K3 
to 0.1mW (fully counter-clockwise) the output goes down to only about 7W.  No 
matter what I do, I am unable to reduce the power further.

It will be interesting to see if other K144XV users find the same.

Where have you read that, Hans?  Looking through the Region 1 papers and also 
the agenda for WRC-15 I can find no reference to the 4 metre band.  The only 
thing that could affect the K3/KX3 would be the band within 5250 and 5450 kHz. 
At present the K3/KX3 will only transmit up to 5420kHz.   For a future WRC 
there is a possibility that top band will be extended down to 1800 kHz again to 
bring the band in line with Regions 2  3.

Chuck  -  It's good to know that the K2 can take anyway between one week and 
ten years to build.  I am sure it was worth waiting for and you will get lots 
of enjoyment with it. Of all the Elecraft kits I have built the K2 gave me the 
greatest pleasure and satisfaction.  Incidentally, there is not a 2m option for 
the K2 unless you mean the 5Mhz/Xverter interface.

Yes, Dennis, you may indeed operate on the 70.0-70.5MHz band when 
operating in the UK under the terms and conditions of the CEPT Licence. 
For Full Licence holders the maximum PEP is 160 Watts (22 dBW) and for 
Intermediate Licence holders the maximum PEP is 50 Watts (17 dBW). The 
band is Secondary; Available on the basis of non-interference to other 
services inside or outside the UK.

Kenwood?  I have had no problem using my K2 /M.  The internal ATU matches every 
whip antenna I have tried.

these days.  But yes, John, I wholeheartedly agree with you; the DL1 is 
excellent and well worth buying at that price. Rated at 20W it is ideal

Bob - The K3 manual does not give as much detail as the KX3 manual which
describes the functions as follows

Audio Signal Level AFV. This display shows the approximate level of the
audio output, prior to the AF gain control (in other words, the AF gain
control has no effect on the reading). The reading will vary with preamp
and attenuator settings as well as the RF gain control. AFV is normally
used in conjunction with the dBV function.

Relative audio signal (dBV). This display can be used to measure
receiver sensitivity or gain/loss of various stages, or compare two
signals. To use it, first select AFV and allow the voltage reading to
stabilize. (This may not be possible with modulated or rapidly changing
signals.) Once the signal appears stable, select dBV. You should now see
a reading of around 0dBV relative to the last AFV reading. If you change
the setting of the preamp or attenuator, you should see this reading
change. However, it may not change as much as you expect unless you turn
AGC off. (Be sure to turn AF gain down BEFORE turning AGC off, as the
signal may become very loud.) Measurement of receive sensitivity (MDS)
requires a calibrated 1-uV signal source such as an Elecraft XG1/2/3.
These sources include instructions for measuring MDS.

Hello Dave -

What I omitted to say in my msg on the reflector was that you WILL need
the KXV3 installed in your K3.  When I mentioned not needing the KXV3A I
was making an assumption that your K3 already has the original KXV3
installed. Apart from the power cable the only additional cables you
will need are a pair of BNC-BNC cables to connect the XV144 to the K3.
You can drive the K3 with just 1mW of power from the XV144.

There is an excellent book: Radio Rescue by Lynne Barasch, which is
ideal for introducing kids of this age to the thrills of ham radio. It
has several good reviews on the web and is available from Amazon. It's
rather expensive new, but is available quite cheap as a secondhand item.
It doesn't mention the KX3 though ;-(

I see what you mean, Vic. I think your best bet is to e-mail Eric and 
ask him. He ought to make it clear on the website whether it's a kit or 
ready built. There should of course be a difference in price.

Like you, I like building stuff, would not consider buying a ready built 
rig and was a bit disappointed there was not more detailed assembly 
required for the K3.

I use an XV144 with my K2 and an XV'70' with my K3, both self-assembled.

[Elecraft] K3: Sub receiver question

I am using the internal K144XV 2-metre transverter at VFO B and an
external XV50 (modified for 4 metres) at VFO A.

Switching in the SUB I can hear VFO A (4 metres) okay but, although I
can hear the K144XV noise level when advancing the SUB RF  AF gain
controls, I do not hear any signals. I do have a 2 metre antenna in the
ANT3 socket.

Am I doing something wrong ?  I would have expected to be able to
receive 2 metres and 4 metres at the same time.

look at all possible sources but, like you, am unable to find a K144XV
utility for the Mac.

There seem to be several difficulties that Mac owners have is updating
Elecraft gear with the latest firmware that I feel a sensible solution
would be to get a cheap basic Windows compatible computer for the
purpose. Such a PC would only cost a few dollars and if you were in the
UK I would gladly give you one.

I won't say scrap the Mac, but you know what I mean.

That is a good idea, Dale, and I would also find that useful. However, I
doubt it will be possible as the USB connector is used for the keyboard.
Using a USB hub on the P3 would certainly be a challenge for the
designers.

I have successfully programmed Macros into my K3 from the USB keyboard,
but I agree there are limitations with the documentation. However, do
bear in mind that it is beta firmware and any observations should be set
to Paul (pauls[at]elecraft.com)

You will enjoy your K1, Stan; I built one many years ago and it went
together like a treat. The only decision to make is which bands to
install and which tuning range capacitor to use. But you can always
change the tuning range later as both capacitors are provided in the
kit.

BTW, this not the KX1 forum. It is the reflector for all Elecraft
products. Unfortunately, for those of us without one, the KX3 seems to
dominate the reflector at present together with many off-topic issues.

interfaces.  They have been discussed many times before.  If your 
desktop does not have a serial input, fit one. If you use a laptop or 
notebook computer, get a USB to RS-232 cable.

Steve - Look at page 99 of the latest (Rev H) manual. The section on CW
Operation shows how the two keys may be connected at the same time. You
might find that a small capacitor connected across the straight key
necessary depending on how much RF you have flying round the shack.

Julie - What you say suggests that the strong signals going through the
repeater are the problem if the weaker ones are okay.  Perhaps those
strong stations are over-deviating and are hence being clipped by the
repeater's receiver.

The K3 is a precision transceiver so maybe the fault lies with remote
transmitters. I presume you have your AGC on the K3 correctly set.

No problems with 2 metre repeater use with my K144XV here, nor with
repeaters on 6 metres.

Another thing that make me cringe is the use of 'radio' to mean a 
transceiver or rig. I first heard this on CB like 'keying the mike', 
long before CB was around in the UK.  I remember Eric saying that the 
XV144 would work on any radio. I could never get it to work on my old 
Philco.

For heaven's sake, don't let anyone use a 'rubber duck' on the KX3 ;-(

I whole heartedly agree with your there, Dick. Unless one has physical
shortcomings, it is much better to build one's own Elecraft equipment.
This is borne out by many elementary questions appearing on the
reflector from people who have not assembled their own gear. Had they

[Elecraft] [K3] New 472kHz LF band

I see from the report of WRC-12 that a new band 472-479kHz is to be
allocated on a world-wide basis with an eirp of 5W (1W in some
countries).  The K3 receiver currently goes down to 490kHz.  Is there
any likelihood that this could be extended down to cover the new band?

The K1, K2 and XV series of transverters were a distinctive dark grey
(gray) by which the mojo Elecraft products were easily identified.
Unfortunately, things turned to black when the KX1 was introduced.
Despite black often being associated with death, Elecraft gave its
reasons at the time. Personally I was sorry to see the change to black
which makes the equipment less distinguishable from the opposition.

On the other hand, as far as coordinating with the decor in you shack,
one could say that black goes with anything (except black).

from www.battery-force.co.uk  It is physically the same size as the

the largest capacity I can find is 2.3Ah. Would the 0.6Ah difference make
a difference??

[Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?

I am getting a 'feature' with my P3 when using RIT. I find that the RIT 
frequency deviation displayed on the P3 is twice that of the RIT 
deviation displayed on the K3.  As far as I am aware I have the latest 
firmware installed on both my K3 and my P3.  Is this a know bug or do I 
have a fault in my K3/P3 installation?

Sorry if I have missed it if it has been discussed on here before.

immediate despatch. For QRP, order it without the 100W PA.  Or maybe the
K2 if you prefer to build it yourself.

I would be interested in this too, Win. The schematics file of 
11-Oct-2007 has Rev XK and the files of 13-Jan-2010, 17-Jun-2010 and 
30-Oct-2010 all have the schematics of KPA3 Rev C, but Rev B is missing. 
I wonder whether Rev B is the same as Rev XK ?

FWIW, I have always found it useful to scratch the surface of the
crystals and tin them prior to mounting them on the board.  It clears
any tarnishing of the cans between time of manufacture and assembly and
makes soldering easier.
