My KPA500 is normally set to PWR ON = STBY, which is the factory default
setting.
But after setting it to OPER for a test, I noticed the same thing.
I suspect this is a timing issue, just like leaving the K3 at low power on
band change if BAND CHG is set to STBY.

It is clearly stated in the manual (as mentioned several times on the
Reflector) that commercial VGA cables are NOT suitable for use with the
KPA500 as some wires are grounded and/or connected together.
The KPA500 will work with ANY radio providing PTT to ground. No cable
required, except PTT!

Yes, of course there are several advantages to using the AUX cable and I also
got to the habit of changing bands with the KPA500 buttons (whether in
operate or standby condition) - and with the Y cable, the K3 still controls
the antenna relays through the BCD-10 band decoder without a problem.
You are right, Bill: the 270V are required for the T/R switching through the
PIN diodes.

My FT-1000MP (though a wonderful rig) was a chore to switch over 230
VAC/13.8 VDC.
But many modern rigs also have (built-in) PSUs for specific voltages:
FT-1000 MkV
and even the new FT-5000. But for 200 W? Just 3 dB
Now, why should Elecraft build power supplies?
Let them stick to what we know their good at: making transceivers and
ancillaries, kits, ...
There is a plethora of good, clean PSUs on the market.

My guess is you'd have to multiply that by a factor 3 or so...
Capital Costs: The KPA500 is alleged to cost around $700. A good 1-1.5
KW solid state amp generally runs something over $2,000 and up.

immediately sent me an FPF file and instructions about the 56 ohm resistor

Why the diode? Well, any relay driven by a solid-state device should have a
diode across its coil (in reverse polarity!) to short reverse voltage
spikes. Transistor are rather fast switches... and such spikes would damage
them. Never drive a relay from a transistor or IC without such
