Re: [Elecraft] CW in SSB mode
It's normal, Dave. I've been trying to get Elecraft to change this for years. That and the adjustable bandwidth for the APF always seem to fall through the cracks. I finally bought a Autek QF-1A which helps immensely. 73, Roger On 2/12/2015 12:38 AM, dyarnes wrote: Hi All, I probably missed this somewhere as I don't do SSB all that much. Re: [Elecraft] CW on SSB
The real answer here is that the K3 always indicates the carrier frequency. There is no shift on SSB. When changing from SSB to CW, the receive frequency is shifted by the amount of the sidetone pitch. The result is that the CW signal is now at an audio frequency of zero, which neither your ears nor the K3 audio stages can detect. The K3 does have a CW in SSB menu setting that modifies that behavior and will allow one to send CW while in SSB mode. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/14/2014 4:51 PM, HREFAB wrote: I notice that I can often hear CW on SSB but when I switch to CW, the signal is lost. Re: [Elecraft] CW on SSB
I give up...didn't find any Autoshift in the menus of either the K3 or KX3. Is this about some other radio? Or is a feature of some early vs of firmware long gone? I'll admit not updating the K3 lately (vs 4.81). In doing frequency drift measurements I noted that Frequency seen in USB mode is different than what is seen in CW mode. The shift appears to be that of the sidetone frequency which I have set to 550-Hz for performing the temperature compensation procedure on the KX3. To hear the test signal in USB I have to retune the VFO if I switch from CW. I have a good ear for tone frequency so am able to tune in the test signal in USB to match the CW sidetone frequency. That requires moving the dial about 550 Hz. Re: [Elecraft] CW on SSB
I believe you will find it under CW Weight in the manual here is the snipit from the manual CW WGHT 1.15 Adjusts element/space timing ratio (weight) for the internal keyer. Additional functions of this menu entry, via numeric keypad (Advanced): Tap 1 to select SSB -CW (default) or SSB +CW (allows CW in SSB modes). Tap 2 to select @ = STOP (‘@’ character terminates KY-packet transmission; default) or @ = ‘AC’ (‘@’ in a KY packet is sent as .--.-. [@] in CW mode). Tap 3 to select OLD or NEW QSK (default). NEW reduces AF keying artifacts. Tap 4 to select VOX NOR (default) or AUTO OFF. The AUTO OFF setting turns CW VOX off on power-up, avoiding accidental keying by attached PCs, etc. Tap 5 to select automatic VFO offset on SSB/CW mode change (VFO OFS) or no offset (VFO NOR, default). Automatic offset is often used on 6 meters, where mixed-mode QSOs are necessary during fading. Note: Pitch matching will be more accurate if USB is paired with CW REV, and LSB with CW normal. I think it is the Tap 5 part sm On 5/15/2014 11:12 AM, Edward R Cole wrote: I give up...didn't find any Autoshift in the menus of either the K3 or KX3. Is this about some other radio? To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Thursday, July 1, 2010, 3:31 PM Hey guys! New Elecrafter here...building myself a K1 and having a LOT of fun. Altogether, I'm assembling the K1 with 4-band filter, noise blanker, and tuner. I've built a lot of smaller kits in the past, but this has been by far the most ambitious build yet. I'm happy to say that studying all of the builders' guides and instructions have kept me from running off the road. I do, however, have one question for the group. Specifically, I have reached the point in construction (Ch. 7, Pg. 39) where I am to perform receiver alignment. The instructions suggest, in preference order, a signal generator, another ham transceiver, or an antenna. Since things have gone so well this far, I am motivated to use the best option and hopefully continue my success through this step. I don't have a signal generator, per se. I do, however, have a VE3DNL marker generator assembled and functioning. Would this be appropriate to use for the intended purpose, or do I need a transmitter that is natively (that is, not through harmonics like the VE3DNL does) transmitting in-band? Alternatively, would the Elecraft XG2 be a better tool for the job? I am building for 40,30,20, 15but the XG2 is 3-band only? Re: [Elecraft] cw vs ssb noise level
Perhaps you have your Width open too wide for CW, remember, you don't need to have it open 2KHz wide to use CW. Perhaps you have your notch filter on Auto with SSB and off with CW? Perhaps you have no NR on or NB on while in CW but do with SSB? Or perhaps you have a DIFFERENT NR setting on for CW than SSB, or even worse, the WRONG settings.. Keep CW at 1-4 and SSB at 5-8 on the NR. Otherwise, you should be getting the same amount of gain in SSB as you do CW.
