Many contesters with large budgets use K3 to win or obtain top scores in SSB

its flaws in SSB if any are balanced by its advantages.
Early K3 had large AF distortions, fixed by a simple modification.

means that the power poles are quiet and the
neighbors with noisy electronics (plasma TV?) are away.

OOps. I had the antenna connected via MFJ-1026, so turning on dummy still let
the reference antenna in.
After switching MFJ-1026 off, turning from dummy load to 2 ell quad
increases the noise level by about 5 db. Enough at this QTH.

problem.
I attributed it to RF feedback although I never experienced one before with
Microham devices.
This was my first contest with P3 and 4.22.

RF gain moves S-meter in my K3 to S5 max. After RF calibration it is S9+60,
but after power up it is S5 again. Seems something not stored. Looks like
the calibration numbers are not stored permanently?

Thanks, I will try the new one.
Seems K3 delivers lots of drama due to many changes. But it is also good
that the K3 users are highly advanced and helpful.

culprit was K3's utility of Sept 2010. The
Nov utility made RF gain working again.

After using the latest utility the RF gain works as it should.

Initially my K3 copied much worse than IC-7000. Turned out that by mistake I
pressed the RX ANT button and was using K9AY as a receive antenna.
After changing, K3 copied slightly better than IC-7000.
Previously, I upped gain on the 400 Hz filter.

. Contest compression of 28 before (no complains, no splatter, very
efficient) is no longer attainable.
Does anybody have the same impression?

Perhaps I just did it. Many options and deteriorating memory...

Indeed the mic gain was low.
I useed CM500 in back and then for testing moved to HC5 in front.
CM500 requires bias and low gain. HC5 does not need bias but needs high
gain. BIAS is preserved but H/L is not. Perhaps H/L should be preserved as
well.
But no big deal.

My P2 has about 0.5mm clearance around the bottom buttons but about 1.5 mm on
the right side. I thought it was on purpose.

Why not set the tune to 1-2W? K3 allows for this as opposed to nearly all
other radios.
The number of software options in K3 is reaching the sky and many problems
of current operators stem from not remembering options that were turned on
by mistake.

in K3 seems to
eliminate the noise completely. Then weak stations are not visible even
though they are good copy with NB. I wonder whether NB can be added to P3.
NB is very effective in SDR-IQ under Spectravue.

and do not worry; PEAK can always be turned on. Too complicated
"fixes" may backfire as we actually want to see the average strength with
averaging.
2. Add a peak display to the current one, perhaps with some hold time as in
AGC HLD.
