[Elecraft] K2/K3 AB Test (Unscientific)
I was just playing around doing some A/B test between my recently built K2 andmy K3 using the same antenna and the same speakers (Elecraft SP3 Speakers) I really didn't notice much of difference in signal strength between the two radios.I dialed the K3's bandwidth down to 2.4 kHz and found they sounded very similar. The K2 may not have all the bells and whistles but it's still an impressive little radio. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] k2/k3
Hello All, I have been reading the mail of this reflector for some time, and thought I would join today and include my two cents; after all I own so2r K3/P3/K-Pod. However, I do enjoy other radios, mainly an IC 7600 which isn't a K-3 in handling strong signals but it does just fine here is rural Idaho, and the qsk is just as good. Shamelessly, I like the colorful screen. On K3 audio: After finishing the build on a K2/100 recently (a field model purchased in 1998 and never completed) I was surprised at the overall performance of K2 and decided that K3 can have too much gain. I now have no gain on each filter, and 2db on the 200 hz one. If K3 seems noisy then after adjusting agc and RX EQ (like most others I have the cw offset at 500hz), you may want to use 0 gain on the filters. Maybe this point about I-F gain has been covered but if so I don't recall reading about it. Moreover, I don't normally use a preamp 160m through 20m, except on beverages. K2 does not have objectionable phase noise as I read somewhere, that noise is the need to do the keying modification. K2 is a real sleeper of a radio, and it taught me something about K3. Of course you have to build it, but K2 is contest competent though with far fewer features than K3. BTW, I had no difficulty getting the parts to finish K2, including the keying modification, 18 years later. 73, Will, wj9b CWops #1085 CWA Advisor levels II and III http://cwops.org/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K2 / K3 audio - and the K2 fan
The issue could be due to 2 factors: AF distortion and AGC properties. K2 has a very sweet AGC. K3 had a very high AF distortion level that was mitigated by a series of upgrades ( at least choke and DSP board). If you read old messages, there is a message by a Russian who looked at initial IMD level (very high) and documented improvements by adding large capacitors in several places. If you bother to put most transceivers - particularly older rigs with analog IF and product detector - on an audio spectrum analyzer and feed them a source of broadband RF noise you will find the audio response has a falling characteristic. The response falls off between 3 and 6 dB per octave above 1 KHz. One can accomplish that in the K3 by setting SSB RX EQ to 1600 = -3, 2400 = -5 and 3200 = -6 and by setting CW RX EQ similarly. I tend to set both 50 and 100 Hz bands to -16, 200 to -6, 400, 800 & 1600 to 0, 2400 to -4 and 3200 to -6 as that significantly reduces both low frequency "rumble" and high frequency "hiss". The other thing to do to make the K3 less noisy (less hiss) is to increase the AGC threshold and decrease the AGC Slope so the AGC system does not "pump up" the background noise. Careful adjustment of AGC parameters and RX EQ will result in a very "comfortable" sounding K3/K3S. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K2 / K3 audio - and the K2 fan
Ted, I have a fully-developed K2 #380) including KPA100, KAT100, KDSP2, etc. I've even added the 3rd party MA Board and the Rework eliminator (together). I also did a full update of everything in 2014 (ROMs, some updates I'd not done when last I worked on the K2 in 2004 or so, etc.; it was quite a job and my Hakko desoldering tool proved its worth!) The K2/100 and KX2 are my in-the-back-bedroom setup: Takes less space on my smaller desk, and I'm able to use any antenna by throwing switches out in the shack. Mostly of late I use the QRP KX2; sort of more fun. My shack off the garage is not heated and not insulated: Too hot on hot days, and too cold on cold days; the shack is better equipped (KX3/PX3 and K3/P3/KPA500/KAT500) but not always pleasant to use. I have listened to both the K3 and K2 alternately side by side in the shack, in fact this morning. They do sound different, but I can't say one is better than the other. Of course, since use DSP filters in the K2 all of the time, and in the K3 most of the time, that's a variable unique to me and my filter settings. The K3 is easier to operate, especially on SSB, due to the P3; I have no panadapter set up for the K2, one of the few third-party options I've missed. One of these days I may replace the K2/100 with a more state-of-the-art radio; I started building mine in July 1999 and the design is a bit long in the tooth, but still solid today! Since I've had no issues with my KPA100's fan, noise or otherwise, I wonder if you should consider replacing yours, Ted? Of course, one ear has stone deaf for 50 years and the other one is not spectacular (Advantage: No need for subRX in K3!), but I do hear computer fans, the fan in my power supply, etc. -- so I'm not "fan deaf" 73, Phil W7OX On 6/26/16 3:56 PM, Dauer, Edward wrote: I know this is runs the risk of reopening an old thread, so I’ll keep the question focused: During the FD this weekend I spent about half the time with the K3 line, and half with the K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 / K3 audio - and the K2 fan
Can't answer your second question about the fans, but I initially thought that my K2 "just sounded 'nicer'" than my K3. It's not a huge difference, and I'm fairly deaf anyway, so I don't have a definitive, iron-clad answer but: 1. I usually use lightweight headphones [single narrow metal band] with the small foam covered phones on my K2 and a Heil Proset I got from Elecraft on my K3. When I finally tried the lightweight ones on the K3, the sound improved. I tried a very old Sony headset [1960's from a reel-to-reel recorder] and it too improved the sound, at least subjectively. The K2 sounded about the same with it. I've concluded that the radio-headphones are a system and the components work together. 2. Jim, K9YC, gave me some advice on the RXEQ, the most important of which was ... "go very slowly while adjusting it." Make a change, and then use it for awhile. That stopped my flailing around with it, and I found I could improve the audio quality noticeably. My current settings, which I haven't messed with in several years sort of roughly mirror the response of a couple of "programs" in my hearing aids. The differential gain achievable in the K3 RXEQ is much less than my hearing aids, but somehow, it smooths out the sound. [That's a technical term used by someone who doesn't really know what's happening. :-)] My observations are mainly for narrow BW CW, I've listened some on sideband, but not enough to figure anything out. My K2 does not have DSP, and I've wondered if the less-square response of the crystal filter isn't part of the equation too. The K3 DSP seems like a brick wall at times. Maybe someone with a DSP K2 and a K3 has some observations. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the Cal QSO Party 1-2 Oct 2016 - www.cqp.org On 6/26/2016 3:56 PM, Dauer, Edward wrote: My guess is that the K2’s curve is skewed toward the lower ranges.2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 / K3 audio - and the K2 fan
Ted, You would find the K3 RX EQ to be beneficial to your ears. The IF filtering in the K2 causes the high frequency to roll off, but the stock K3 has a flatter response. If you have an older K3, the DSP board exchange or the LPF added to the DSP board will help by rolling off the high frequency content. Check the serial numbers on the K3 mods page to see if your K3 has the updated DSP board with the high frequency filter. The fan on the K2/100 is what it is, I don't know of any substitutes, but make sure the CAL TPA setting is correct to start with. You can run the fan on the HI-LO setting so the fan is on constantly at low speed and will only go to high during extended transmit periods. You can also put a slow running muffin fan above the K2/100 heatsink such as is described in the pages of Tom Hammond's (SK) website http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/kpa100_aux_cooling_fan_duct.pdf. His website is preserved by the Mid-Misouri Amateur Radio Club. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/26/2016 6:56 PM, Dauer, Edward wrote: I know this is runs the risk of reopening an old thread, so I’ll keep the question focused: During the FD this weekend I spent about half the time with the K3 line, and half with the K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2/k3 question
Unfortunately the K2 KPA100/KAT100 will only work with the K2. For the K3 you'll need to get the KPA3/KAT3 modules, or possibly get an external amp such as KXPA100/KXAT100 that can be used with both K2and K3 (albeit not as fully integrated as the dedicated amplifier/ATU options for each radio). 73, Matt VK2RQ On 5 Dec 2014, at 6:18 am, Tim Edmonson timedmon...@spfs.net wrote: I have a K2 with the external twin at/100 and pa/100. Unfortunately, there is a glitch in earlier versions of Google's Android operating system that prevent these apps from functioning, so I have had to design them all for Version 4.1 and above. I hope you find these apps useful, and that they make operating your Elecraft rigs more efficient and enjoyable from wherever you are - at home or on the road. None of these apps requires an Internet connection, so they will operate from anywhere. [Elecraft] K2,K3,KX3 IF-QRG for XVerter for 630m Band
Hi Elecrafters, I'm using a transverter for the new 630m-Band in Europe. This transverter has an LO on 10 MHz. It works well on the 10 MHz-band but not in the transverter-mode of the K2,K3 or KX3 because their firmware will not allow to set the XVn IF parameter to 10MHz. Is there any chance to make that possible in the future? 73 de Hans, DF5SR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2,K3,KX3 IF-QRG for XVerter for 630m Band
Hans, You can operate the K3 in TEST mode which will output up to 1.5mw to drive a transverter. TEST mode uses the transverter interface connections. It will not provide dial reading in 470-KHz so you will see 10.470 displayed. A transverter band for 630m with a 10.470 IF would be nice addition to K3 firmware. Using a high-stability 10-MHz reference as LO is a natural solution for putting the K3 on the new 630m band. Did you build your own unit or is it available for purchase in EU? 73, Ed - KL7UW --- Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2013 16:02:07 +0100 From: Hans H Vollmer hans.h.voll...@t-online.de To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K2,K3,KX3 IF-QRG for XVerter for 630m Band Message-ID: 5127886f.8050...@t-online.de Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-15; format=flowed Hi Elecrafters, I'm using a transverter for the new 630m-Band in Europe. Yes, isn't it amazing that a 4-year-old rig continues to receive the full attention of the manufacturers and substantial improvements like this. [Elecraft] K2/K3 Operating Tip: Using SCAN to keep an eye on your favorite (too-quiet) band
When I was a teenage novice in the early 1970's, armed only with a Heathkit HW-16, 15 meters became my favorite band. It was a reliable source of DX contacts even when my entire antenna system was a multiband inverted-V a few feet off the roof. 15 m, as well as the other high HF bands (12 m, 10 m), can be sparsely populated at times, even when they're open. In the old days that meant tuning the VFO up and down, searching endlessly. But the K2 and K3 have a SCAN feature that lets the radio do the work, while you answer email, work on homebrew projects, clean up the shack, etc. I was reminded of this about half an hour ago. A quick check of 15 m revealed no signals, so I set up a background (muted) scan from 21.000-21.060 on the K3. A few minutes later the scan stopped at 21.026, where PJ2/KE1B was calling CQ. Since he had just started calling, there was no pileup, and I made the QSO on one call. For scanning instructions, see page 40 of the K3 owner's manual or page 103 of the K2 manual. Let me know what pops up. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2/K3 Operating Tip: Using SCAN to keep an eye on your favorite (too-quiet) band
Wayne, I often use the K3 scanner to listen for band activity (I wrote the SCANNOW key macro that scans immediately the range of freqs from VFO-A thru VFO-B). The scanner is great for keeping an eye (ear?) on the band while doing other things around the shack or, in my case, while busy with something at the other end of the house and listening via intercom. One thing that I often thought might be useful for this remote scanner monitoring would be the ability to set a specific dwell time. For example: once the scanner pauses on a signal it would automatically resume scanning after a user-settable amount of time. As it is now, the scan will sometimes pause too briefly or get hung up for too long on a particular signal; would be nice if I could set it for, say, exactly 10 seconds (or whatever amount) per hit. 73, Drew AF2Z On Wed, 04 May 2011 08:00:51 -0700, you wrote: When I was a teenage novice in the early 1970's, armed only with a Heathkit HW-16, 15 meters became my favorite band. Re: [Elecraft] K2/K3 Operating Tip: Using SCAN to keep an eye
I tried it, and thought I had flunked scanning 101. You have to push the M - V button twice before pushing the scan button. Maybe it says that somewhere, but I didn't see it. I was only pushing it once. Anyway, now it plays! Watching my P3, however, it does skip over some signals. Some seemed sufficiently strong to have stopped the scan, but I suppose it is a matter of whether or not a character is being sent at precisely the moment the scan feature rolls across that freq. [Elecraft] K2/K3: Keyboard to CW possible with KUSB and no computer?
Does the KUSB option allow you to connect a USB keyboard to the K3 (or K2 for that matter) and perform keyboard-to-CW without the aid of a PC inbetween? If not, would this be a relatively easy future enhancement to either rig? (I know there isn't much K2 development going on... just asking) I know USB doesn't often play well with CW timing, but maybe a buffer could help even at the cost of a slight delay from keypress to CW output. The benefits of being able to do keyboard CW without the PC involved are less power and noise, less equipment, more efficient, more portable... --Andrew, NV1B .. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2/K3: Keyboard to CW possible with KUSB and no computer?
No, the KUSB is just a USB to serial adapter. I would think adding that to the K3 would be some considerable effort and would guess many would not bother or would just use a PC for the purpose. I would expect there to be some kits around and they would probably have RS232 interfaces, so a KUSB would not be needed 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174, P3 #108 -- A good cook is like a sorceress who dispenses happiness. -Elsa Schiaparelli, fashion designer (1890-1973) On 2 Jan 2011, at 16:17, Andrew Moore wrote: Does the KUSB option allow you to connect a USB keyboard to the K3 (or K2 for that matter) and perform keyboard-to-CW without the aid of a PC inbetween? Andrew, Keyboard connectivity is not yet supported by the K3 however it has been mentioned by Elecraft to be on their wish list. In fact, the P3 has already been prepared with a cutout on the rear for a future USB port that hopefully will accommodate keyboard ops. For those without a P3 I'm not sure how Elecraft might offer keyboard connectivity and based upon my discussions with them I don't think they've ironed that out yet either but I am sure they're working on it. In time I'm sure they'll discuss it with us all when they're ready. Hi, I think I've found a work-around for CW Skimmer on Win 7. Not only should you (probably not necessary, but why not?) run the installer as the administrative user, you also have to run the programs that way. After you do the install, the programs OmniRig.exe and CWSkimmer.exe will be in the directories \Program Files\Afreet\OmniRig and \Program Files\Afreet\CWSkimmer, respectively. Navigate to the program OmniRig.exe. (This has to be the actual executable, not an alias or a menu entry). Right click on the executable. Navigate to Properties at the bottom of the list. Click Compatibility tab Click Change settings for all users (at bottom of window) Click to select the radio button Run this program as an administrator Click OK Now do the same thing for CWSkimmer.exe Now it should work OK. YMMV but this works on my eeePC 1001P with Windows 7 Starter. When CW Skimmer starts, it starts Omni Rig. OmniRig talks to your radio via a serial port. It is useful to start Omni Rig first and get the settings right before you start CW Skimmer. Windows is growing up, getting almost Unix-like. Permissions become an issue. I have not yet attempted to load CW Skimmer and OmniRig in Vista or Windows 7 but, in both operating systems the \Program Files and \Program Files(x86) directories are protected and do not allow standard user accounts to write data to any subdirectory in the \Program Files tree. Run as Administrator or turning off User Account Control are both ways to work around the operating system restrictions. Unless the author modifies the software to store configuration and data files in a non-protected directory (e.g., the user data C;\Users\All Users or C;\Users\login trees), the best solution is to manually install the software to a directory that is not in the \Program Files tree or to a separate drive. 73, ... [Elecraft] K2 -- K3 upgrade...
I am not familiar with the Palstar tuner, but can share with you my experience with the K2/100 external tuner and with the Flex 3000 internal ATU. The K2 external ATU was excellent/outstanding in its ability to match just about anything. The F3K tuner was junk, and I ended up buying an external Armstrong type roller tuner. The key to success in the tuners that rely on relay switching of capacitors/inductances is for the switched reactances to be fine enough for the bridge circuit to find an appropriate selection amongst them. This becomes particularly important on the higher frequency bands, e.g. 10 and 6 meters. My F3K found it impossible to match my 6 meter quad, which is a fairly high Q antenna. I am assuming that the K3 which I have on order will be as good as the K2 external tuner was...we shall see, but knowing Elecraft, I think I am on OK ground. WRT portability, an external tuner is just one more piece of stuff to carry along...this may be an important consideration for you (or not) depending on whether you plan to use the portability feature of the K3. I would opt for the internal tuner. Re: [Elecraft] K2 -- K3 upgrade...
If one has used the KAT2 tuner in a K2, and unconsciously set one's general level of tuner expectations based upon that kind of performance, one has set a level that not many achieve. My KAT 2 has matched random Z's that I could not match with an ATR30 or ATR15, an FT1000MP, and alas no, not with my K3 auto tuner. On a 160m way-off-of 50 j0 dual wire antenna, the K2 would match it at the feed (running battery of course), and it was a month before we could construct a rather odd tuner that would do it QRO without burning tape and wire insulation, overheating, cracking or arcing to toroid cores successfully used elsewhere in QRO applications. We were encouraged by K2/KAT2 working stuff QRP on it and listening to a band that was alive with signals. Reading the tuner elements used for match off the K2 menu was invaluable as the wires were picking up immense signal levels interfering with the antenna analyst we had at the time. It took a PAIR of immense T400A-2 powdered iron toroids fiberglass-taped-together as a single core and double polyimide wire plus teflon tubing on the winding to tame it (and run absolutely stone cold), but we knew it would work and how it would work from the KAT2. The one area where nearly all fail (including the KAT2) is the very low Z's presented looking through an odd quarter-wave length of standard coax at a high Z. The simple mental model of *Rig -- great tuner -- any frequency -- any length of coax -- any antenna* is VERY hard to achieve in real life. If the front of that string is dictated by non-negotiable issue, then the antennas have to be picked carefully to fit within it. God bless ya if the first thing you throw up does it, write that down in your diary as one of your really lucky days. It's not the rule. 73, Guy. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K3 Utility Sugestion
It is on our list. Handling zip archives has been discussed and deferred in favor of other tasks. What you're asking for is a bit more than a simple red button. It's all the code to unzip an archive file. The distribution mechanism (separate files versus a single zip file) is very different. It can be (and has been) argued that we should handle the beta zip file in the K3 Utility, and maybe even the main distribution should be a single zip file. But it's not as trivial as adding a button, and other tasks are ahead of this one. Great! Are there any photos available, showing the 1- and 2 pocket design? Or outer dimensions? My interest is a carrying case for the K2, with one or two pockets (for a small mike, key and bundle of antenna wire). 73 - Kristinn, TF3KX Ken Kopp-3 wrote: I've had several requests for pockets on the K2 and K3 cases and I'm pleased to tell you that they're now available. Re: [Elecraft] K2 K3 (ssb)
Hi Trevor, thanks for that. This is an interesting programme, particularly for those without on-board processing, but I was hoping there was a way of evaluating a processed speech pattern without having to listen to it, ie completely objectively. Let's say I have a defect in my hearing (who doesn't have something lacking at our age?) how do I know that I have optimised my own transmitter for my own voice? Listening to my own voice is fraught with variabilities, I might just have a head cold that day or wax in my ears and apply too much boost to the hf end, for instance. The Vshaper is good for showing the spectrum, but speech intelligibility is not discernable from that spectrum. If you have the ARRL Handbook for 1988, the first page of Chapter 7 gives clues but not enough to go on for me. 73 David G3UNA David said: I just imagine that there is somewhere a reference that will help identify those bits of the display which contribute most to clarity and make it easy and more Is this of any use as an analytical tool http://www.dxatlas.com/VShaper/ Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K2 K3 (ssb)
The technique I used to set the SSB settings on my K2 was like this. 1. Transmit into a dummy load. 2. Receive on a known good receiver (Drake 2B in my case). 3. Record the receiver output in a high fidelity recorder (Cakewalk). 4. Listen to the recording on studio headphones. This allowed me to hear how my voice my mic sound through my rig. I was able to vary the TX level in the recording to simulate S-9+ signals or S-5 signals so I could see how things shifted as the signal went down. It's important to record yourself since you can't hear your own voice well at all if you're talking at the same time. - Keith N1AS - - SKCC 344c - -Original Message- David, You bring up a good point - how we actually sound to others is not necessarily how we perceive ourselves. David, You bring up a good point - how we actually sound to others is not necessarily how we perceive ourselves. Here is the alternative that I use: I have a good fidelity stereo system in the hamshack, and also have a recording of a male speaking voice (from a book on 'tape'). I play the recording on the stereo and hold the microphone close in front of the speaker while listening to the K2 on a separate receiver. A talk radio program can also provide a source speaking voice. The major drawback for this method is that just any sort of speaker will not do the job - if the speaker is not of above average quality, it will color its output and the microphone will receive a distorted sound. I have also used this same method to evaluate various microphones for communications clarity. 73, Don W3FPR David Cutter wrote: Listening to one's own speech via another receiver, to optimise one's own transmit settings still gives a subjective result, *on average*, no better than another radio listener. Re: [Elecraft] K2 K3 (ssb)
Don I'm really trying to get away from any listening done by ourselves and substitute an instrument = spectrogram. I just imagine that there is somewhere a reference that will help identify those bits of the display which contribute most to clarity and make it easy and more effective to adjust our filters accordingly. We would speak a set number of words for comparison and adjust for best fit. Fidelity is not an issue. In machine speech, this would be easy to optimise, but if we use voice keyers, those stock phrases could be perfectly adjusted for maximum punch. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 K3 Covers
Definitely interesting. I would be interested in some pictures, especially with the Elecraft logo. My mojo infection causes me to want one for each (current k2 and future k3) but the practical side asks when I would put it on? I imagine this is VERY practical for folks whose shacks are in more of a living space. I find that I have my rig on often enough, that I would wonder where to store the cover. But for traveling and other purpose I can see uses for it. When do other members of this distinguished reflector put covers on their rigs? Is it essentially 3 sided? I assume it can be placed on with the cables and all still running out the back. - David Wilburn [EMAIL PROTECTED] K4DGW K2 S/N 5982 On Fri, 2008-01-04 at 17:15 +, Ken Kopp wrote: I believe there used to be a source of radio covers shown on the Elecraft site, but I don't see it now. [Elecraft] K2/K3 and contesting
That which sets these radios apart is their relative immunity to blocking and IMD. That's a pleasure! Their clean transmitting signal is a matter of pride for the operator. A few suggestions to the relatively less experienced contesters; * compare yourself only to yourself and have fun. Even the last place finisher in a marathon has a smile on their face! * I can not speak for everyone else, but I can copy 60 wpm, and most QSO's are going to occur above 28 wpm. Practice! * I never, ever, reduce the passband below about 900 cycles. I want to hear what's going on all around me, and i more or less copy all of them at once * If the radio isn't being jammed by IMD/blocking I won't have any trouble copying both signals that are 50 cycles apart. I am going to answer the caller who finishes first. * dipoles are plenty in the sweepstakes, but high is nice I just play any more, after 50 years of contesting, but sure had a good time! 72, Fred - kt5x ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. http://www.theworldlink.com/articles/2007/10/06/news/doc4707c03901b23958789121.txt The EU's decision was irresponsible and not based on sound science, said Joe Smetana, a principal engineer and tin whisker expert with French telecommunications equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent SA. We're solving a problem that isn't and creating a bunch of new ones. A good example of well-intentioned environmentalists and politicians ignoring science...the law of unintended consequences strikes again. Thank you Elecraft for staying ahead of the game (by not allowing lead-free solder use in the K2). http://www.elecraft.com/solder_sources.htm From W0YK's comments on the Sprint using two K3s in SO2R: Prior to this, with the K3 in one ear and another radio it the other ear, the K3 was strikingly better to listen with. It only sounded like the signal was in one spot because I had the AFX Binaural feature turned on. This effect was accentuated by the much lower noise component in the audio of the K3, even on 40, 80 and 160. With the K3, my brain needs to be re-trained to copy CW without the background rumble of noise and distortion and extraneous artifacts that I hear with other radios. Thank you again Elecraft for your attention to detail re IMD, BDR, Phase Noise, AGC, etc. Attention to details, using scientific metrics rather than marketing perceptions, DOES make a difference, despite what other manufacturers might have us believe.
