Richard,
I also saw the HP paper and you are correct, there are ambiguous sections in
these two standards. In my opinion these are poorly written that introduce
new terminology (Professional Equipment) and the harmonics measurement is an
incorrect approach to solving a problem that is more

Brent,
I don't know the Taiwan requirements in detail but many countries require
that anything that plugs into the wall meet their own requirements and carry
some sort of mark.Assuming your ac/dc adapter is a wall plug-in unit, I
am not surprised that they would require testing and/or

Hi George/All -
Thank you for your responses. All have concurred that BSMI is only imposing
EMC requirements on our types of products.
On a side note, I have noticed that they are imposing safety requirements on
some IEC60065 products and on Electrostatic photocopying apparatus.
Thanks again
Hello Listers,
We're looking for a stand-alone video pattern generator (both PAL and NTSC
formats) to test video capture boards for the EMC Directive; and, hopefully the
generator itself would pass too. We need one that would include a display of

We do not include power-on transients in our calculations for flicker or
harmonics. Our HP equipment ignores the first 10 seconds for this purpose.
If I recall correctly, HP has indicated that this is just one of several
ambiguous sections of these two standards.

Brent,
The Taiwan BCIQ terminology was changed last year to BSMI. It is my
understanding that at the present time BSMI only imposes an EMC
requirement and certification on ITE. We market adapter powered
printers there (120V) and have not been required to obtain any safety

Georg,
You were right on the money when you identified the requirement for post
installations. Similar to the case in many standards, the area of interest
is silent -- nothing is said about the application in 7.2.2. When I find
this lack of information, I begin my search for guidance in the

In particular, George's observation that sec. 7.3.1 applies only to

I agree with Don on the interpretation of each as opposite to all

However, section 7.3.1
Hello Dan,
I'd take this as serious as the rest of the standard.
