[PSES] UK plug adaptors with fuse?

Hi 

We have been checking several travel adopters for importers here in EU, but we 
have to fail nearly all of them. 

One big issue is the UK plug. As I understand they shall comply with BS 1363-3. 
And in this standard §12.4 e) there is a requirement for BS 1363 or BS 643 
fuses. 

Some adapters have an 5x20 IEC fuse some have thermo fuses and many have no 
fuse at all. 

Do I overlook some exceptions or new requirements, that allows adaptors without 
BS fuse, or are they all just "normal" Asian low quality?

[PSES] UKCA importer/ representative

Hi all 

When we started understanding the new/coming UKCA rules, we got the impression 
that all companies selling products to the UK should not only mark the products 
and make a UKCA declaration of conformity BUT they shall have en 
importer/authorized representative in the UK (or North Ireland). 

But now when we read some new official information, we see that they use the 
wording: if you need to have a representative/importer he shall have address in 
the UK. 

Does that mean that not all imported products will require an importer/ 
representative company with address in the UK? 

Can some one point me to some official web pages that makes it clear when we 
need an importer/ representative company with address in the UK?

[PSES] Calibartion SW

[PSES] personel lifting equipment

Hi

 

I have trouble finding requirements for a baby cradle rocker. The rocker is
at the same time the cradle fixing. The rocker have 2 hooks one for hanging
it from eg. a hook in sealing and the other hook is used to hang the cradle
on. (The cradle is made mostly of fabric and is CE marked).

 

The rocker do not lift the baby but keep it at same level and according to
the machinery Directive it is therefore not a lifting equipment.

 

What will be the correct standards and requirements for the hooks??

 

I would like to tell the manufacturer that they shall use hooks with safety
latch, but I can't find the argument. I know the standards EN 1677-xx but
how can I find a reference that state that the hooks need to comply with
these requirements??

[PSES] God EMC practice

One of our customers want to know if there are some good practice for
emission compliance. I normally recommend 3 dB margin, but I don't have any
reference to why this is OK.

 

I know that some companies have internal rules for 3 or even 6 dB margin to
compensate for production deviations and for many years ago VDE did have
some rules like that.

 

Does anyone have some good references on this subject?

[PSES] Inrush Current

Hi

 

We have several times been asked to test Inrush Current and have this
function on our Harmonic tester, but it is not defined how it measure and we
get very different measurements each time we switch ON the same EUT.

 

I can't find an IEC definition on the measurement other than "peak current".

 

I asume that it is most correctly to measure the current  by switching ON at
the top of the sine (90 deg), but what about duration?

 

A peak current with a duration of 0.1 ms is not as interresting as the same
current for 1 ms. And what if there are several current peaks after each
other such as ringing wave form?

[PSES] CE of battery equipment (Li-ion)

Hi all

 

Regarding especially Li-ion batteries and rechargeable batteries in general.

 

Battery equipment is not directly under LVD, but under 2001/95/EC General
Product Safety directive we have EN 60950 and EN 60065, which includes
safety of batteries, for some products but also excludes amongst other
battery backup units.

 

But what about power-banks which in many cases have a USB connector for
charging amongst other Smartphone's. How do we define safety requirements
for the battery here?

 

There are also other products such as Seg Boards/Balanceboards which seem to
be under the Machinery Directive, but still not under electrical safety
requirements. How do we find requirements for the battery in these products.

 

IEC 62133 is used under the CB scheme and a EN version have been issued, but
under which directive?

 

Several LVD standards requires that if a battery is used it shall be tested
according to EN/IEC 62133, but if the product is not under LVD how do this
standard end as a legal requirement?

 

For me it seems that battery products have been forgotten in the EU safety
requirements, or not so clearly addressed.

[PSES] Installations in France

Hi all

I have a little special question. In France a mains socket distribution
strip are only allowed to have 8 outlets (according to IEC 60884-1 §14.26
French amendment) , but what about a storage cabinet for 24 tablet PC (used
in schools etc.) with charging of each PC. Shall they use 3 x 8 outlets each
with a mains power cord or can  a 24 outlet be used.

I think that the following standard could give me the answer but I can only
find the standard NF C 61-314 and NF C 15 100 in French.

Can someone help me closer to an answer?

[PSES] BS 1363 design

I have some problems with the outline of a small USB wall-plug type PSU with
an UK plug and approved according to EN 60950. 

 

As I read the standard the layout shall comply with Figure 4a, and the
outline shall follow this requirements up to 6.35 mm from the engagement
surface, after that den design is not restricted.

 

But how do I understand the R15 min. The manufacturer does not have R15 at
all, but comply with the R9.5 around mains pins. Is there any good guide for
the layout or are you free to reduce the housing around the ISOD pin?

Hi Bostjan

Sorry for not being so specific. I know that the PSU shall comply with EN
60950-1, it's a USB PSU. But it comes in different versions with amongst
other with the UK plug.

I found a British web page that informed that over 1000 different plugs have
been found over the last couple of years that did not comply with the BS
1363.

So my concern is to find the right parts of BS 1363 or a separate standard
that addresses the plug of a wall-plug type equipment.

Hi Kim,

What will be the PSU used for? Standard depends on the application. If the
PSU will be used to supply information technology equipment then standard EN
60950-1 is applicable. BS 1363 is used just to verify plug part.

§201.8.8.3.103 ACTIVE ACCESSORY HF dielectric strength. Test data is; 7.2
kV, Crest factor 5.4 – 6.6, Frequency 300 – 500kHz

 

Normally I use a signal generator with modulation (to control crest factor)
a AR HF amplifier and a HV transformer. But the only transformers I can get
is only rated 100kHz so I need to drive them very hard to get a 300kHz
signal through, and thereby I have now blown 8 transformers over the last 2
years.

 

A good HV HF transformer could also be an option, but they don’t seem to be
standard product and a local transformer manufacturer could not make one for
me. (the primary impedance shall be higher than normal)

 

Where can I get a tester or a transformer?

Dear Brian

 

You are absolutely right. This is a big problem. EN 60204 is not recognized
around the world. I have just help a manufacturer to get into Canada and
they had to comply to EN 60204 for EU and IEC/EN 61010-1 for the rest of the
world. You can’t get a CB certificate for EN/IEC 60204.

 

I have put a big effort into finding a good way around EN 60204 but I get
caught by EU guidelines and annexes in the standards. 

 

There must be other companies with the same problem. What do they do?

More trouble in the world of Laboratory Equipment (red headed step child)
and the Machinery Directive. 

 

I’ve had TUV offices in 3 Asian countries and a customer in Australia tell
us our products (Laboratory Equipment) must have an AC Lock Out Device, an
Emergency Stop Switch, and a Light Tower because “Laboratory Equipment now
falls under the Machinery Directive”. 

 

They are telling us that any AC product requires a lock out device. What?

 

On one instrument we make, the only moving part is a small dc motor with a
wire brush similar to an electric tooth brush that cleans an electrical
contact between analysis. You can stop this motor by hand without injury.
This motor is also behind a double interlock door (due to an electrical
hazard), but yet they say we must have an E-Stop switch and Light Tower. 

 

I’m not familiar with the Light Towers. I’ve seen them on Large Production
Machines but what purpose do they serve on laboratory equipment no larger
that an upright piano? I understood they are only required to show the
operational status of a machine if not knowing the status could cause a
hazard or injury. Is there more to it? I don’t see why it would be needed if
there are no accessible hazards. 

 

I’m getting the feeling that some believe these things are required just
because laboratory falls under the machinery directive and not for any other
reason, which seems silly to me. In the past, the machinery directive mainly
covered the safety of Production Machines which generally require these
safety components. 

 

Can you imagine your next spectrum analyzer having an E-Stop switch because
of the cooling fan or the motorized CD drive door? Is this what it is coming
to?

 

Why or why don’t you large powerful laboratory equipment manufacturers fight
for the official recognition of “Laboratory Equipment” and have our own
Directives, Standards, and requirements and not have to wade through all the
machinery Directive nonsense?  What sense is the IEC/EN 61010-1 standard if
they are not harmonized to the MD? Why are we being forced to apply the
IEC/EN 60204-1 to Laboratory Equipment where 90% of the requirements don’t
or shouldn’t apply? 

 

Sorry for my rant. It’s been a long week. I’m just a small powerless voice
trying to sell safe products to a crazy crazy world..

[PSES] Construction directive/regulation in EU

Hi

One of our customers has asked us how to understand the Construction
directive and the new regulation, concerning their products.

The make different kind of stationary road traffic signs according to
standards;

· EN 12966

· EN 12368

· EN 12899

At the moment they have no NB involved in their CE marking. We have made
some test for them concerning EMC and electrical safety.

I'm not sure how to read the directive/regulation and understand when a
product is under which system (1, +1, 2 etc...).

Will all tests have to be made by an accredited laboratory?

Do all products require the use of a NB?

Is there issued a guide on this regulations

I have a machine which is a combination of a transport system for meat and
an x-ray test instrument for measuring the meat quality.

 

For EU it would be natural to use EN 60204 for the complete product, but
what about outside EU?

 

I was looking at EN/UL 61010 since it is a measuring instrument, but how
would US and Canada look at the transportation system?

Hi Rick

An 60601-1 approved PSU will pass 60950 requirements for safety. But the router 
is not automatically in complians with 60601-1 just because it is powered from 
a medical grade PSU.

Yuo can connect the output from the secondary to earth, but this will have 
great influence on how the connected medical devices shall be designed. It is 
absolutly best to make it float, when looking at medical electrical safety.

Sorry for so many question at once and I am researching this in several ways, 
but I know and trust this group’s experience and opinions. Want to change an 
approved ITE 5 port Ethernet router switch device with external ITE power 
adapter to medical grade power adapter. This is a desk top type power adapter 
with IEC 320 appliance coupler.

Is it wrong (or maybe how wrong is it) to assume that a 40 watt AC-DC 12 VDC 
out power adapter meeting 60601-1 (safety) and 60601-1-2 (EMC) will meet or 
exceed 60950-1 (safety) and EN55022 Class B/EN 55024 (EMC)?

Can the secondary be earth grounded on a 60601-1 power adapter (i.e. 
green/yellow wire from input tied to secondary)?

Does harmonic (61000-3-2) and flicker (61000-3-3) apply to medical devices if 
over 75W?

Are WEEE and RoHS exempt from medical?

Is there anything else I should keep an eye out for in this conversion?

whatever they want, it is a “how to test” standard. The product standard

The higher ESD sounds like it might be a requirement of the product-specific
60601-2-XX standard.

 

I used to test infusion pumps, capnometers, and pulse oximeters.  The EMC

I’m trying to track down a customer requirement for a piece of medical gear
and apparently I’m a revision behind. They have a requirement for 15 and 30
kV air and contact discharge and they reference the 3rd edition standard. My
current standard doesn’t have levels that go that high. Normally I would
look at 60601-2  medical electrical equipment ….EMC compatibility…. But it
only requires 6 and 8kV. 

 

The standard is going through all the time consuming purchase request
channels, until then can someone with the 3rd edition help me understand
when the 15 and 30kV is required. The device itself is used in patient
monitoring and could be used in an operating theater. 

 

We’ll meet their requirements I’m just trying to figure out the paper trail
that would lead them to that requirement, could be nothing more than a
desired goal but I would like to understand it with your help

[PSES] Green multi conductor wire

Hi all

 

I have a medico HF surgical handset where the designer has chosen green as a
main color for parts of the product.  Also the 3 wire cable to the handset
has a green outer insulation over the 3 wires. Internal in the cable the 3
wires are blue, red and white. The product is for single use and can’t be
re-wired.

 

Green is normally used for earth connection in US and Canada. But can we use
green on a mulit-wire cable.

 

National deviations to IEC 60601-1 claims;

 

A PROTECTIVE EARTH CONDUCTOR or a PROTECTIVE EARTH CONNECTION or insulation
shall be identified by either green or green and yellow colour. Colours of
neutral and POWER SUPPLY CORD conductors shall be in accordance with the
Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Part I, CSA C22.2 No. 21, and CSA C22.2 No.
49.

 

Can we use green on a mulit-wire cable?

UL flammability marking

I have been told that the UL marking on PCB (UR 94V-0 etc.) can also be
something like E4. Does anyone know if the marking requirements have been
changed and if so where I can get more information.

Rostest test requirements

Vibration equipment

Hi again

No, the shown plug was a special EDB (Computer) plug which was introduced
years ago. This plug is not at all mandatory. It is used where you wants to
separate computers from being fed from same outlets as vacuumcleaners etc.
which could generate electrical noise or other problems. Forget that you
have seen this plug unless your are directly asked to deliver products with
it.

Normally a 3 plug mains outlet in DK is protected by a fault current
protector, but for industrial use it is not always true. Office and home use
have fault current protection !

Rich, The Shuko plug will not fit the special Danish grounded outlet.  The
Shuko pins are 4.8mm round pins and the special Danish grounded socket
outlet will only  accept the special Danish grounding type plug with unique
(almost flat) pins.  Here are some details I copied off the Feller web page.
The top is the Danish plug, the bottom is the Shuko

Chemicals in test equipment

Hi all

I'm working on a automatic milk test equipment. It uses small sticks with
dry chemicals on. A drop of milk is but on the stick and after 5 minutes the
colour spectrum is measured.

Now my problem is where do I get information on which chemicals are allowed
to be use and which are restricted. This concerns the following stages:

selling/exporting the sticks
using the sticks in the equipment
waste

The product will be sold in EU and US/Canada.

A good web page with information would be great, but also a good consultant
could be used or any other help.

SV: FCC part 15 verification

Hi all

Funny to see how questions which seems to too simple, can turn out to be
difficult. I have been into to the same problem before.

I think we need to look at the FCC text it self.

The definition in 47 FCC Part 15 Subpart A says:

15.3 (z) Unintentional radiator. A device that intentionally generates radio
frequency energy for use
within the device, or that sends radio frequency signals by conduction to
associated equipment via
connecting wiring, but which is not intended to emit RF energy by radiation
or induction.

15.3 (n) Incidental radiator. A device that generates radio frequency energy
during the course of its
operation although the device is not intentionally designed to generate or
emit radio frequency energy.
Examples of incidental radiators are dc motors, mechanical light switches,
etc.


The 9 kHz comes from:

15.3 (u) Radio frequency (RF) energy. Electromagnetic energy at any
frequency in the radio
spectrum between 9 kHz and 3,000,000 MHz.

If it was using a timing signal over 9 kHz it will be a digital device, and
please notice some audio amplifiers are now using switching technique and
can bring them into digital devices (see definition below):

15.3(k) Digital device. (Previously defined as a computing device). An
unintentional radiator (device
or system) that generates and uses timing signals or pulses at a rate in
excess of 9,000 pulses (cycles) per
second and uses digital techniques; inclusive of telephone equipment that
uses digital techniques or any
device or system that generates and uses radio frequency energy for the
purpose of performing data
processing functions, such as electronic computations, operations,
transformations, recording, filing, sorting,
storage, retrieval, or transfer. A radio frequency device that is
specifically subject to an emanation
requirement in any other FCC Rule Part or an intentional radiator subject to
Subpart C of this Part that
contains a digital device is not subject to the standards for digital
devices, provided the digital device is
used only to enable operation of the radio frequency device and the digital
device does not control
additional functions or capabilities. Note: Computer terminals and
peripherals that are intended to be
connected to a computer are digital devices.


Conclusion:
As I see it the product is not a digital device (audio over 9 kHz is not a
timing signal), the product is an Unintentional radiator, the product is
thereby under Verification ( see 15.101 other devices).

Thanks for the replies.

I'm now happy that an incidental radiator doesn't need Verification.

But now I'm confused as to whether and audio amplifier is an incidental or
unintentional radiator.  As the amp does not intentionally generate energy
over 9kHz (it merely processes it) would it not be an incidental radiator?

FDA registration of laser

When using a CD or DVD driver in a product (PC or audio product) and the
driver is FDA registered, do I need to register the final product at FDA
too. I can't find a paragraph in 21 CFR which tells me when not to
register.

(The drives are Class I but includes a higher laser internally as fare
as I know)

For EU you will need an E marking, since 1/10 2002 the CE marking is not longer
enough for this kind of equipment. This approval process is not very good
implemented in EU. You are free to choose any national authority within EU but
they don't accept the same test houses. If we go off line I can help you
further.

See directive 71/245/EEC and 95/54/EEC.

In 95/54/EEC annex I 2.1.10 you can find a definition that includes electrical
connections and cables, which you equipment is substituting. Also you will need
to comply to the RTTE directive 99/5/EC.

For EU you will need an E marking, since 1/10 2002 the CE marking is not longer

enough for this kind of equipment. This approval process is not very good

implemented in EU. You are free to choose any national authority within EU but

they don't accept the same test houses. If we go off line I can help you

further.


See directive 71/245/EEC and 95/54/EEC.


In 95/54/EEC annex I 2.1.10 you can find a definition that includes electrical

connections and cables, which you equipment is substituting. Also you will need

to comply to the RTTE directive 99/5/EC.

Does South Africa require approval of short range devices e.g..
Bluetooth. As fare as I can tell they require conformity to EU, US or
Canadian requirements and have approved a lot of world wide
accreditation bodies. But what is the actual national requirements, I

CE marking and governmental requirements

As fare as I remember when you deal with governments (police, train,
buses etc.) the requirement for CE marking can be omitted.

Can any one point me to an official statement/rule concerning this
matter.

Right now I'm involved in some automobile equipment for the police,
which normally requires E marking according to directive 95/54/EEC.

 Just to add some more information:

 Be sure that the ISDN circuit is in good balance and that the ISDN IC
 have good ground connection and decoupling of supply. The noise can
 affect other nearby circuits. Joe's idea with the caps on ISDN have to
 be checked according to electrical safety standard because of
 restriction on insulation to other circuits.

 The LAN will normally retransmit if a packet is lost. If you use a test
 program which indicates every error in communication, I will suggest to
 make some real life communication to seen if you have a problem at all.

Ampacity of telecom cables

Hi all

EN 60950:2000 paragraph 6.3 talks about the max. current in telecom
cables. If you don't describes anything about cable AWG you are only
allowed to load the cables with 1.3 A. If you want to load with more you
shall make a note in the installation manual which AWG you shall use.

I think the ampacity can vary from different manufacturers but , does
anyone have some kind of  guide concerning ampacity of small signal
cables ?

Medical devices, current limit

Hi all

I have a medical device under EU directive 93/42/EEC. It is a class IIa
product and sends some small electrical pulses through the body for
treatments.

Does anyone know of any limit for the current ? (voltage is generated
from battery and is max. 16Vdc)

Does anyone have the current/frequency diagram over max. current the the
body can withstand without hazards ? (It is normally used for mains
leakage current protection).

I have an active loudspeaker which have been using a traditional power
supply, but will now be using switch mode power supply. Until now it
have not been under FCC part 15 and ICES 003, as fare as I understand.

Is a switch mode power supply regarded as a digital device according to
FCC part 15 and ICES 003. It uses timing signals of more that
9.000/10.000 cycles pr. second.

Creepage/clearance in EN 61010-1

Hi all

I have problems  concerning clearance and creepage values in EN61010-1.

I have a product with a 24 ac and a 230 relay. The 24ac can be used for
sensors and are regarded as double insulated in the 230 Vac transformer
for safe operation. But what are the clearance and creepage to the 230
Vac on the PCB. (pollution degree (1 and) 2)

I have found the following from table 4:

  Creepage   Clearance
P and N to PE  : 1,5 mm   1,5 mm
P to N  : 1,5 mm   1,5 mm
P to P   : 3,0 mm   3,0 mm
I/O to P and N :  ?  mm  ? mm

RTTE and video out

Hi all

I have an equipment which can convert audio and video (phono connector)
signal from a PC to a normal HF antenna signal which can be transmitted
though a normal antenna cable in the house to your radio and TV sets.

The voltage of the HF signal is the same as normal received from an
antenna.

Does this product fall under the RTTE directive ?

According to my interpretation the definitions in art. 2  c) and d) say
that it has to be used for TX to be under this directive.

What do you think ?

UL Plastic

I need a EU manufacturer or distributor of HD PE plastic in sheets with
UL 94HB approval as minimum.

My problem is that the UL database register gives me nearly only PE
pellets manufacturers not sheets. So I need to find the manufacturers of

I find this discussion very interesting.

The danish standardization body have the interpretation that if a standard 
refere to another standard by number and
year (ex. EN 61000-x-y:1996) you will have to use this standard and not any new 
version, but they recommend that you
don't use standards which have been outdated.

They told me that there wasn't any official interpretation within EU, so before 
we gets too many questions like this I
hope that we can get an official statement.

Lasting of the CE marking

Hi all

I was just seeking through EMC LVD RTTE and MD directives for evidence
of my interpretation but I couldn't find it, so can some of you help me.

As I recall there are the following rules:

For EMC directive you will always have to produce according to the
latest harmonized standards (after dow date)

For all other directives you just use the harmonized standards which was
acceptable at the time of entry to the market (then you can produce the
same product for decades without retesting to new harmonized standards)

Please help me finding the clauses in the directives which supports this
statement.

But what about RTTE when new standards are harmonized where no
standards was before ?

There are another issue here. When you say industrial could it also be light 
industrial ?

Remember that Industrial in EU is sites with it's own transformer at the mains.

If you are sure that your product is only Industrial just put a statement in 
the manual that the CE marking is for
Industrial locations only. Put the same statement with some more details in 
your Technical file and I  you can sleep
well in the future.

The only problem is if it is obvious that the product will be used in light 
industrial locations, then you should make
the statement very large and also put it into the marketing brochures.

 residential.  As hard as I try to justify designing the test plan around

 should be evaluated to an
 Industrial set of immunity tests.  Does anyone have any pointers on how I
 can test the product within the
 word of the law while still being able to sleep at night?  Must I try to
 squeeze more out of the budget in
 order to test to the legally required standards and then test again to the
 ones that make sense?

 I seem to remember a recent thread on this but of course I did not archive
 it...

you produce shall use the latest standards. Therefore:

Hi all

A customer of mine have a product which have a controller unit with
mains power and an open Class 3B laser unit. The product will normally
be regarded as a component for build-in but it can also be used by
students for laser experiments etc. as it is.

The product is not in production yet but is ready for shipment in a
small quantity (around 25 units).

If the product only was a component I would just send it around the
world but it can function as a product by just adding a PC to a RS 232
port.

How should I tread this product when sending it to US/Canada ?

Can I just add a label on the product with a text like this:

For evaluation purpose only  ?

And what about EU, the manufacturer is located in EU ?

Hi Bob

When you are in the grey zone with products in more than one product family, 
the normal procedure is to state
compliance to both categories by making a worst case test with requirements 
from both categories. The other way is to
declare in the manual that the product is limited only for industrial use.

The last solution is normally not good because who knows if customers are in 
industrial or light industrial areas.

North American test house

Hi all

I need URGENTLY a test house in North America which will accept a Danish
accredited test report for a Bluetooth product for FCC and IC approval.

The Danish test house is accredited my national government and have just
applied for FCC approval concerning Bluetooth but we can't wait for that.

Can some one give me names of possible test houses so we don't have to
retest it all.

Thank you for all the other answers which have been very informative too, and
shows that there are more to this EMC matter than just complying to the
standards. First of all this is a quality matter and not just a stupid
requirement from some old dusty government officers, and some of the requirement

The number 50 at each point comes from EN 55024/CISPR 24:

4.2.1 Electrostatic discharges

Static electricity discharges shall be applied only to those points and
surfaces of the EUT which are expected to be touched during usual
operation, including user access, as specified in the user manual, for
example for ribbon and paper roll changes.

The discharges shall be applied in two ways:

a) contact discharges to the conductive surfaces and to coupling planes:

The EUT shall be exposed to at least 200 discharges, 100 each at
negative and positive polarity, at a minimum of four test points (a minimum
of 50 discharges at each point). One of the test points shall be subjected to
at least 50 indirect discharges (contact) to the centre of the front edge of
the horizontal coupling plane.The remaining three test points shall each
receive at least 50 direct contact discharges. If no direct contact test
points are available, then at least 200 indirect discharges shall be applied
in the indirect mode (see IEC 61000-4-2 for use of the Vertical Conducting
Plane (VCP). Tests shall be performed at a maximum repetition rate of one
discharge per second.

b) air discharge at slots and apertures, and insulating surfaces:

On those parts of the EUT where it is not possible to perform contact
discharge testing, the equipment should be investigated to identify user
accessible points where breakdown may occur; examples are openings at
edges of keys, or in the covers of keyboards and telephone handsets.
Such points are tested using the air discharge method. See also IEC
61000-4-2 regarding painted surfaces. This investigation should be
restricted to those areas normally handled by the user. A minimum of 10
single air discharges shall be applied to the selected test point for each
such area.

The application of electrostatic discharges to the contacts of open
connectors is not required by this publication.

EN 61000-4-2

Dear all

I'm writing on a internal testprocedure for our products, and have now come to
EN 61000-4-2 ESD. What confuse me is that the standard (as I read it) only
refere to 10 discharges at each point (and each polarity), but I have been told
from several different persons that the right number is 50 at each points (but
without any reference to any standard).

Do anynoe know what the right number is and where I can find it

Paper manual - CD-ROM manual

Hi all,

We have a product which is under the following standards:

Low-voltage directive  EN 60950
Teleterminal directive  TBR 003 (ISDN)
EMC directive
FCC part 15 and 68
(and other world wide approvals)

The equipment is very simple:
no user access inside equipment
auto ranging PSU 100 - 240 Vac
no external user accessible fuse

We have a discusion about the manual. As I see it we don't have to provide a
paper manual/quick guide, the CD-ROM manual which include all FCC text and other
tech. data should be enough. But some pepole in the firm have always delivered a
paper quick guide and will not accept a CD only.

Can anyone help me in finding requirements for a paper version. (EN 60950 1.7.2
Safety Instructions; say If it is necessary...)

Yes Denmark is a full member of the EU and therefor CE marking is required.
Denamrk have national deviation to EN 60 950 as many of the other EU countries
have. You can find them in the CB bullitin.

Can you cite the IEC 60950 section where this deviation occurs.  In looking
over my copy of the standards, and listed deviations in CBs we have done,
I could not find a Denmark deviation as the one you stated.

There is a deviation in Denmark which states that earthing
connection in Denmark may not be established through wall
socket. My question is how do they earth Class I products in this

If you are using type K thermocouplers you will have to turn off power to the
component before measuring the temp. Since they are sensitive to magnetic
fields.

Subject:  Temperature Measuring of Magnetic Components





Hello EMC-PSTCers,

I wonder if anyone knows of the method of measuring temperature limits on
magnetic components.  I happen to get involved in this and found that my results
are different than the vendors result by as much as 10-15 degrees on measuring
on a same magnetic component.  Even applying the thermocouple to different
location on a coil seems to give you different results.  Is there a method that
I should be following to measure temperature with thermocouples methods, not
change of resistance, on magnetic parts such as transformers, coils, etc.?

FCC form 740

Dear all,

i-data (Denmark) is exporting ITE to the US, but some times our equipment is
stop by customs because they want us to use FCC form 740.

For a year ago I was told that form 740 was not used any more so I'm confused.

Is there an easy way e.g. implementing some kind of statement on the
invoice/customs papers or do we have to use form 740 ?

If I need to use form 740 does anyone help me with a EDB version (the one which
I can downloade from FCC is scanned and can not be edited).

Concerning the first statement in your letter:

The TUV is NOT required for AC power devices. The CE marking is the only
required legal marking in EU according to LowVoltage Directive. TUV is only
nice to have and could be a costomer demand in Germany only. (TUV is a
German institute).

And furter UL is not a must  for AC powered devices there are some
alternatives for the US market.

Country of origin

This question is not a safety or EMC issue but I think that some of you
have been involved in something like this before.

On the label with compliance information we normally also add something
like :  Country of origin  or  Made in this is required by some of the
EU directives and others (normally just the country of the main company who
have the legal responsibility. )

But my questions are;

-what is the rules for this information, is it just country of the company
or is it the country where it is assembled, and what if it is partly made
in different countries ?

-which authoryties requires this informations other than EU directives (and
FCC part 68)

FCC part 15 text

Dear groupe,

I have just started in a new job and are preparing label text for FCC class
B ITE equipment for verification. I would use the §15.105 text in the
manual and the following § 15.19 (3) text on the equipment:

  This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is
  subject to the following
two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2)
this device must accept any interference received, including interference
that may cause undesired operation.

But the production leader say that UL have told them that the following
text on the equipment is OK:


 This equipment complies with the requirements in Part 15 of FCC Rules.

Where have UL got this text from and is it OK to use this short version ?

EN 60950 productionline test

Dear groupe,

For a year ago I got a standard under the LVD which called for a
productionline test with HV test and earth test. I have now lost that
information and would like if someone can help me with the number and name
of the standard, it addresses  IEC 950 equipment.
