I always used a bench vise to crimp 40 pin floppy, 34 and 80 pin IDE, and 50 pin SCSI IDC connectors onto ribbon cable. Never had a problem. On Friday, November 13, 2020, 12:30:37 PM MST, Jon Elson wrote: On 11/13/2020 10:14 AM, Gene Heskett wrote: > Greetings all; > > I, despite

*PRO TIP #1 -* A hotter iron is better for soldering pins in connectors with low melting point plastic.  It sounds counter intuitive, but the goal is to get in and out quickly.  You want to dump heat into the pin as quickly as possible, melt the solder, and then stop heating the pin.  A lower

Beware of the cheap solder-cup connectors they are selling on amazon and other places. They are made out of the wrong kind of plastic and even with a temperature controlled iron and a quick hand, the pins can shift. If a quick jab with the iron leaves a dent - throw them out. I just threw out

For all the time spent chasing cable problems it might be nice to have a chip on a board that would echo signals and generate error messages. Without good diagnostics one is like the puppy chasing his tail. Dave On 11/13/20 3:32 PM, Gene Heskett wrote: On Friday 13 November 2020 14:59:41

I don't run ribbon cable any longer the 12inches, and keep it against metal surfaces to minimize noise induction into the cable. There are ribbon cables that have the pairs twisted for a length, but you are limited to connectors every foot. I use shielded twisted paired cable for anything longer.

Ribbon cable is not exactly the best when it comes to noise and speed. Notice that no modern interface designed in the current century uses it. I've had good luck with those way-cheap "Aviation" connectors. You can buy them in different diameters and number of pins. and they don't cost much.
