Re: [Emc-users] 2.3.3

2009-10-26 Thread Steve Stallings
Gene,

I use an X1 style machine for my show demo unit. One
thing that helped an amazing amount at higher speeds
was adding an outboard support to the lead screw. I
cannot take credit for the idea, because frankly, I did
not originally think it would help much. We have several
guys in our local club with similar machines, and one
offered/forced me to let him add them to my machine.
It required making an extension to the lead screw, but
the result was worthwhile. My guess is that the screw
vibrates in the clearance in the nut and anchoring the
outboard end significantly reduced the ability of the
screw to move off axis as it vibrated. The task of
extending the screws was made easier for us because
there are longer screws available from Little Machine
Shop for the large table option on the X1, and because
we had the Y axis set up with the motor in the back
of the machine, something not easily done on the X2.

Regards,
Steve Stallings

2009-10-26 Thread Dave
I have a customer who processes foam and the foam dust is corrosive.
They process the foam with saws in several locations in the plant and
they have become masters at using air blowoff and air pressurization to
keep the dust out of the machinery. I'd consider putting a small
blower in the area of the ball screws to try and keep a positive
pressure in the vicinity of the screws. Source the air from an area
away from the machine so it is relatively dust free or put a filter on
the blower intake.

Could you point me to some pics / sketches /samples of this 'outboard' support?
Maybe it could help me increase the speed along the x axis of my mill

Oh, wow! This sounds like an equivalent of bearing whirl, where the
journal starts rolling around the inside of the bearing like a wheel
instead of just spinning on its axis. More rigidity ought to help, but
Acme screws were just never designed to handle the speeds we see with
CNC, especially 16 TPI screws.

work.

I don't know if i'm missing some packages or something.. i don't remember if
the other time i used comp i got that problem.

So any help will be appreciated..

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Emc-users] 2.3.3 - mini-mill screw support

2009-10-26 Thread Steve Stallings
The machine is loaned out at the moment, and I don't
have any pictures. The leadscrew was extended by
drilling and boring a hole in the end, and then pressing
in the turned down end of the extension. The other
end of the extension was turned down to fit a single
standard bearing, not a preloaded pair. This bearing
was mounted in a plate attached to the other end
of the table. All it does is keep the screw from whipping
around.

The first thing that comes to my mind, you need to install the emc2-dev
package (System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager).

[Emc-users] G68 coordinate system rotations (apparently it's been implemented?!?!)

2009-10-26 Thread Colin MacKenzie
According to this recent page...
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?action=browse&diff=3&id=EmcFeatures

...G68 has been implemented. However, I have 2.3.3 installed and it says
"unknown gcode". I've been looking forward to this gcode for a long time. I
would use it to easily correct any misalignments of the workpiece. For example,
in drilling pcb's I would touch off at one drill point (or any reference
point), go to an opposite drill point and compute the necessary rotation in the
XY plane. I would automate this process in my drill file gcode generator.

Sure, there are ways of realigning the workpiece, but I often end up a few mils
or so off and it takes longer.

Anyone know the true status of this feature? I heard a year ago it would be
tough to implement because of the nature of emc's framework. (??)

One way to tackle something like this would be to drill,
bore, and possibly ream the end of the shaft to take a
standard hardened and ground dowel pin. Press the pin
into the shaft, leaving enough sticking out to serve as
a precision "stub shaft". Then use a small, cheap needle
bearing to support the dowel.

1/2 inch, and I've had it out, looks straight. Can't see any wobble when it
turns if I shine a light in there either. If there was room, I might put
bigger, fasted screws in it but after a while I may as well go get an X3 &

I considered such an approach, didn't because I couldn't figure out how to
make it quickly removable so the table itself could be removed by simply
unscrewing the drive bolt from the nut. Which also means there is no way to
install it that I can imagine, short of drilling into the table and putting
in cap screws to hold the bearing boss in place. :(

It seems to do it worse when the y table is out near the end of the screw.

Re: [Emc-users] 2.3.3

2009-10-26 Thread Hubert Bahr
Gene
From the drift in this thread it sounds like you have an X2 using
stock screws. In my case I abandoned the stock screws and went with
lower cost rolled ball screws. I decided the X2 wasn't rigid enough to
justify precision screws. Of course at 5 tpi I get plenty of
longitudinal motion without super high rotating speeds. I used .625
inch screws. I did have to remove some metal for clearance on the
table, saddle and base. I chose to move on to an X3 as it would provide
more rigidity and X, Y and Z motion. There, I am still using the stock
screws, just until I get some other things under control, like emc2
control of spindle speed and change to belt drive for greater speed
range. I already have the screw stock and nuts on hand, It is just
things are working well enough that the other changes take higher
priority. I did find the X3 much easier to convert although the Z axis
takes a much larger motor. I guess I am confused at what kind of speed
you would have on the Y axis with less than 4" of travel that would
cause bearing noise.

I don't believe its bearing noise, but the screw chattering in the nut.

And I have, with the LMS table kit, about a 5.25 by ~12" motion envelope, so
it can do its current G0 speed of 25.2"/min with less than a 3 turns of the
motor accel ramp. I re-designed the z axis completely, and with a 425 motor
on the z screw with a 17/42 belt reduction, I can now put 155 pounds on a
drill bit, whereas with a 262 on the original setup, the head gibs bound and
locked at about 5 pounds. Screws behind the post are a very bad design
unless the z ways are 2 or 3 times longer. But you are right about the
rigidity, its rather sorely lacking, as one would expect in a sub 100 pound
machine. With all my mods, it might weigh 100 lbs now, but the basic frame
is still as flexible as ever.

Thanks Hubert

Re: [Emc-users] 2.3.3

2009-10-26 Thread Hubert Bahr
Gene
I was dissatisfied with both the speed and the backlash so I
abandoned the stock screw and went to the ballscrew. I now arbitrarily
set the max speed at 80" per minute. During this change I upgraded to
the G540 drives as well. I haven't measured the force on the drill bit,
but can easily snap one when things go wrong. The engineering data on
the Ball Screw site indicates you can push 3 times the load with a ball
screw over an acme screw. My experience to date supports that claim.
On the Z axis I am using a 280 oz/in direct drive. Could it be
drive/stepper noise. I certainly noticed that my steppers are much
quieter now since the upgrade.

[Emc-users] EMC at NAMES, 2010

2009-10-26 Thread Dale Grover
This spring a few folks put together a booth at the North American
Model Engineering Expo in Toledo, Ohio. We had a 10' x 10' booth
with two 8' tables, an Emco F1 CNC machine running EMC (mostly
cutting wax and/or air), and some great, large-format photos of
various machines that run EMC. (Not to mention a great banner!) We
had 200 CDs of EMC to hand out, and had a ton of interested folks
stop by. (See the wiki for more details:
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?EMC2AtNAMES )

NAMES is moving (back) to the Detroit area (Southgate--see
http://www.modelengineeringsoc.com/expo.htm) for 2010, and will run
April 24-25.

Is anyone else interested in putting together a booth or other
activity to promote EMC at NAMES in 2010? Or have ideas? This year
we reserved a booth rather late in the game--we might have other
options in 2010, including

--seminar(s)?
--more space for demos? Multiple machines?
--classes?
--coordinating location-wise with other EMC-related folks who will be
exhibiting (e.g., Jon Elson and Steve Stallings)
--handouts? CDs?

Thanks,

--Dale

Dale,

PMDX would certainly be interested in coordinating booths
with any EMC related presence at NAMES. We had a choice
site at the last show, but due to the move, all bets are off.
The sooner we can ask for a group placement, the better.

So where does one get ball screws cheap enough to use on an X1 upgrade?
As far as drills or milling bits go, I have blown a VSD fuse and snapped off
a 1/4" solid carbide 4 fluter a couple of times now.

Depends how cheap is cheap enough. eBay is one source, I got my 8mm

Yeah, I'm still trying to decide whether to go to NAMES.
What are the plans for the EMC codefest
next year? Will we be in Ann Arbor with Village Press's CNC Workshop?
About 2 months between them, so that's good to catch up on other stuff.

I don't think Dale has been to Southgate Community Center, it will be
NOTHING
like Toledo. Plywood sheets over hockey ice, and two rooms much smaller
than
the big room in Toledo. It may be a REAL mess, as everyone has gotten
used to
being able to sprawl out in Toledo. Some of the vendors brought
everything smaller
than a VBM or a 1:1 scale locomotive from their inventory. Also, they
have only 3
TINY meeting rooms. I am expecting something pretty close to a disaster
without the
Parkinsons keeping things running smoothly.

reasonable. Yes the ball nuts are a major cost as I use 2 for each
axis. Nuts less than $25 each. I don't know how they would fit in an X1.

Yes, their bronze nut for 1/2-10 looks exactly like the ones I got from MSC,
but paid over $30 ea for 2 about 3 years ago. I have them screwed into a
piece of steel and use the thread pitch diffs as a backlash takeup mechanism.
They both can be seen here:

Which is a picture of the whole mill with the new z axis kluge from the right
side.

In this case the screw does not turn, the nut(s) do, trapped between some
good sized thrust type ball bearings sitting in the alu blocks.

There have been warring parties within the NAMES leadership for a number
of years.
The only reason they moved to Toledo was that Barbara and Truman
Parkinson got in
charge of selecting a venue, and I think they sprung the Toledo thing on
the rest of
the leadership as a done deal, with a several year contract. The
Parkinsons live East of Toledo,
so it was a great thing for them. The rest of the leadership is from
the Detroit area, very
hooked in with the auto industry. I also heard (from Barb) that Toledo
gave them a deal that
was too good to pass up. Anyone who went to the 2006 NAMES knows that
Toledo was
ABSOLUTELY DEAD that year. It was just eerie to walk out on the streets
during the day and
there were NO, ZERO people out. I was glad to see this had REALLY
changed this last year,
there were all sorts of night spots open, etc. A lot of the perks the
hotels were giving away in the first
years have gone away, too. My guess is part of it was the Seagate was
asking for a lot more money
for next year.

My first visit to NAMES (2001?) it was in the Yack arena, which was
literally a Quonset hut that
looked like it was used to store feedbags the rest of the year. They
packed 1000+ people into
the area of a big basement! It was AWFUL, you could be marooned in a
sea of people for 15 minutes
until a couple people all moved in the same direction at the same time.
Fortunately, that was the LAST
year for the Yack. (Well, OK, the Yack Arena is actually big enough to
fit a regulation hockey rink,
but I guess the extreme crowding just made it seem half that size or
even less. The poor lighting also
made it seem smaller.)

So, they were in the Southgate Civic Center from 2002 through 2006. The
first year they only had
one rink and the lobby area, later they got both rinks. One big problem
is they usually have a hockey game
Sunday night, so they have like FOUR HOURS to tear down the entire show
so at least one rink can be
used. That is an insane mess for the NAMES crew. A lot of people
didn't like standing for 8 hours on a
sheet of ice, even with a little plywood on top. The warped plywood was
pretty bad to roll heavy gear on,
also. There is also a dearth of hotels in the Southgate area, including
some really BAD ones.
