This is for a G0704 style of mill conversion, using one of those

 X/Y/Z is 0.1mm, 0.24mm 0.1mm or, 2.5 thou, 9 thou, 2.5 thou.
The 2.5 thou is a bit loose, bigger balls in the nut perhaps?

The 9 thou Y indicates either the thrust bearing at the solidly anchored
end of the screw is duff, or perhaps not properly assembled. I was able
to fix one of those in a cheap 16mmx5 Chinese screw on my toy lathes z
by padding the outer ring separation with some half thou alu foil shims.
Several of them stacked. Tricky to cut too. Seems to be holding up so
 far.

Is this considered ok or out of range?

I've put these figures in my mill ini file, and it's currently running
the X and Y axes back and forth; will measure it again after a bit of
 wearing in.

 Any thoughts/comments?

I've been dealing with a loose Y axis on my cinci contourmaster; this
 machine
is set up so one can turn either the ballscrew or the servo motor to adjust
position. The so-called lock on the servo end was loose and so the backlash
was self-adjusting;out to unusable amounts. Ugh. I'm in the process of
a dual fix ... complete rebuild the mount for the ballscrew so I can
lock it down tight and add a 10 5 um glass scale for reference.
For now I will connect just the glass scale with it's attendant tuning
problems (just not quite enough counts) but the future holds a config
where P and D are fed from a 40K count/in encoderon the ballscrew and I
is driven by the glass scale in like manner to Stu's big machine.

Some years ago I was asked to fab a bunch of blocks for a US First
robotics team. Set them up and ran as a batch.
When finished I miked them to see how I'd done. SD was 0.001 but the
dimensions were all large by about 2 thou. This on a machine (mazak)
with 0.0025 backlash on both X and Y. Appropriate cutter comp might have
landed these in the right range if it made a difference. ;-) Just
 personal experience.

I should be able to run the mesaflash utility from my home directory,

long as the .bit file is in that directory correct?

Also, I don't have to do anything jumper wise to make this happen do I?

I tried running running the mesaflash --device 7i80 --write

I have not tried to do anything with the IP address yet.

+0 -0 is an ok number for climb milling, which most CAM thinks it is
ok to do for best finish, else you should program your paths for
conventional milling where the play is taken up by the cutting force.

Yeah, fun ain't it. Not! We used to have a metric/inch convertor in
kcalc a decade back, but the inch world doesn't have a quarter to call
anyone who cares. I find myself making conversion errors all the time
where my answer is off by a decimal point left or right. Whoever took
that macro out of kcalc s/b drawn and quartered, very slowly.

Working in electronics all my working life, metric is how that world
runs. And it makes everthing so much simpler, but on this side of the
pond, dial indicators come in inch only. Its plumb stupid.

Either that or I need more naproxin sodium in my cold yesterdays

Good Morning Peter,

You should not need to do this as the 7I80HD already has appropriate firmware
 installed

I just went about trying this, becuase I remember our conversation on
the forum, you supplied 7i80hd_16_rmesvss6_6.bit, due to me running the
7i49, and 7i52 off of the 7i80. Looking back at the forum I saw one of
your replies, that That bitfile is also in the 7I80.zip support

Does that mean that it will run what I need from the start then? and all
I need to do change the IP address?

[Emc-users] 7i80 Setup ( Was PNCConf setup)

2015-04-07 Thread Rick Lair
Hey Guys,

I will start from the top on what I have done,

I have Debian built from the boo-table USB from the website, then I
compiled using,

cd ~
sudo apt-get install git-core gitk git-gui
sudo apt-get build-dep linuxcnc
sudo apt-get install linux-image-3.2.0-4-rt-686-pae
sudo apt-get install libudev-dev
sudo apt-get install iptables-persistent
git clone git://git.linuxcnc.org/git/linuxcnc.git linuxcnc-dev
cd linuxcnc-dev
git pull
git checkout master
cd src
./autogen.sh
./configure --with-realtime=uspace
make
sudo make setuid

After that is when I tried to load the firmware to the card, then I
tried to change the card IP address, both times I get the No 7I80 board
found

Then I found in the HM2_ETH manual the following entries,

*Configure network with static address*
Add these lines to the file /etc/network/interfaces to configure eth1
with a static address:

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet static
 address 192.168.1.1

*Disable IPv6 on the dedicated interface*
By default, Linux may transmit IPv6 packets on all interfaces, even if
they are not explicitly configured with global IPv6 addresses. In
/etc/sysctl.conf, disable ipv6 on eth1 by adding this line:

net.ipv6.conf.eth1.disable_ipv6=1

*Note:*Simply setting ’ipv6’ to ’ignore’ in the GUI network tools does
not eliminate the link-local ipv6 address. Use the sysctl.conf method
even if you otherwise use the GUI to configure the dedicated interface.

*Configure iptables for exclusive access*
Install the package iptables-persistent and put this in the file
/etc/iptables/rules.v4 (remove leading whitespace from every line):

*filter
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:hm2-eth-rules-output - [0:0]
-A OUTPUT -j hm2-eth-rules-output
COMMIT

Of which I did all of the above, and still I get the No 7I80 board
found after trying to communicate with the board.

I am using the following MB,
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A88X-ITX+/?cat=Specifications only
because we have had very good luck with the ASrock boards, and this
offered on-board WiFi, to get around the problem of not having an
ethernet port to connect to our network, when using the 7i80.

Could the on-board WiFi be causing my communication problem?

As an aside (and then I will stop because this thread is so far
off-topic that I can't even see the topic): Fuel economy is measured
in units of area (volume/distance).

If you convert miles per gallon to an area you come up with something
about as thick as a hair. Now imagine a hair of fuel feeding into your
engine as you drive along.
Then look at all the other cars. And think how many roads there are.
Suddenly that's a collossal amount of fuel, easily visualised.

Hey Guys,

I will start from the top on what I have done,

I have Debian built from the boo-table USB from the website, then I
compiled using,

cd ~
sudo apt-get install git-core gitk git-gui
sudo apt-get build-dep linuxcnc
sudo apt-get install linux-image-3.2.0-4-rt-686-pae
sudo apt-get install libudev-dev
sudo apt-get install iptables-persistent
git clone git://git.linuxcnc.org/git/linuxcnc.git linuxcnc-dev
cd linuxcnc-dev
git pull
git checkout master
cd src
./autogen.sh
./configure --with-realtime=uspace
make
sudo make setuid

After that is when I tried to load the firmware to the card, then I
tried to change the card IP address, both times I get the No 7I80
board
found

Then I found in the HM2_ETH manual the following entries,

*Configure network with static address*
Add these lines to the file /etc/network/interfaces to configure eth1
with a static address:

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet static
  address 192.168.1.1

*Disable IPv6 on the dedicated interface*
By default, Linux may transmit IPv6 packets on all interfaces, even if
they are not explicitly configured with global IPv6 addresses. In
/etc/sysctl.conf, disable ipv6 on eth1 by adding this line:

net.ipv6.conf.eth1.disable_ipv6=1

When machining I guess in imperial and measure in metric.

A useful dodge for machining on a manual lathe in the wrong units:
Set a digital micrometer (or caliper) to the exact size you want. Zero
it, then switch to the lathe units. The micrometer now reads how many

You need two Ethernet connections to get going. Secondly, check your
firmware version of the 7i80.

This is not quite true, a single interface will work but is more trouble to
setup.

Its much more convienient to have a normal internet connection so 2 lan
connections is definately better. This can be dual Ethernet connections or a
Ethernet (for the 7I80) and wireless lan for general internet access (thats
the setup I have on my desktop and laptop that both work with hm2_eth)

There is no need for a firmware update in your case
Marius had very old = almost 2 years old firmware.

The reason its a bit tricky to set up an independent Ethernet interface
for the 7I80 is that you must make sure that 7i80 traffic is routed to that
interface (and not sent out the generic internet path)

To debug this further, can you

1. Indicate what the 7I80 W1 and W2 settings are (note that if you change
jumper settings you must power cycle the 7I80 for those settings to take
effect)

2. Post the results of /sbin/ifconfig -a to the mailing list so we can see
your network interface settings

I try to keep the world right-side-up by a quick reality check: to a
decent

I worked in metric all my life ... weight, volume, etc but not distance.
Since most of what I do now is related to pre-1920 guns I reverse engineer
in imperial. I can think in mm but it takes a bit of effort.

A useful dodge for machining on a manual lathe in the wrong units:
Set a digital micrometer (or caliper) to the exact size you want. Zero
it, then switch to the lathe units. The micrometer now reads how many
native-units of the machine you are from your required (non-native)

You need two Ethernet connections to get going. Secondly, check your
firmware version of the 7i80.
Also download the latest Mesaflash software form here
http://www.github.com/micges/mesaflash. The version on the Mesanet
website is outdated and does not talk to the 7i80 properly.

You are having the same problems that I had. It went away with the
firmware update and fitting a second Ethernet connection. I got a
cheap
USB to Ethernet adapter.

Subject: [Emc-users] 7i80 Setup ( Was PNCConf setup)

 Hey Guys,

I will start from the top on what I have done,

I have Debian built from the boo-table USB from the website, then I
 compiled using,

 cd ~
 sudo apt-get install git-core gitk git-gui
 sudo apt-get build-dep linuxcnc
 sudo apt-get install linux-image-3.2.0-4-rt-686-pae
 sudo apt-get install libudev-dev
 sudo apt-get install iptables-persistent
 git clone git://git.linuxcnc.org/git/linuxcnc.git linuxcnc-dev
 cd linuxcnc-dev
 git pull
 git checkout master
 cd src
 ./autogen.sh
 ./configure --with-realtime=uspace
 make
 sudo make setuid

After that is when I tried to load the firmware to the card, then I
tried to change the card IP address, both times I get the No 7I80
 board
 found

Then I found in the HM2_ETH manual the following entries,

 *Configure network with static address*
Add these lines to the file /etc/network/interfaces to configure eth1
 with a static address:

 auto eth1
 iface eth1 inet static
  address 192.168.1.1

*Disable IPv6 on the dedicated interface*
By default, Linux may transmit IPv6 packets on all interfaces, even
if
they are not explicitly configured with global IPv6 addresses. In
/etc/sysctl.conf, disable ipv6 on eth1 by adding this line:

 net.ipv6.conf.eth1.disable_ipv6=1

*Note:*Simply setting ’ipv6’ to ’ignore’ in the GUI network tools
does
not eliminate the link-local ipv6 address. Use the sysctl.conf method
even if you otherwise use the GUI to configure the dedicated
interface.

 *Configure iptables for exclusive access*
Install the package iptables-persistent and put this in the file
/etc/iptables/rules.v4 (remove leading whitespace from every line):

 *filter
 :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
 :hm2-eth-rules-output - [0:0]
 -A OUTPUT -j hm2-eth-rules-output
 COMMIT

Of which I did all of the above, and still I get the No 7I80 board
found after trying to communicate with the board.

I am using the following MB,
 http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A88X-ITX+/?cat=Specifications only
because we have had very good luck with the ASrock boards, and this
offered on-board WiFi, to get around the problem of not having an
ethernet port to connect to our network, when using the 7i80.

Could the on-board WiFi be causing my communication problem?

This is not quite true, a single interface will work but is more
trouble to
setup.

I agree Peter, I meant to get going with first off. After that you can
dump the second connection.

Its much more convienient to have a normal internet connection so 2 lan
connections is definately better. This can be dual Ethernet connections
or a
Ethernet (for the 7I80) and wireless lan for general internet access
(thats
the setup I have on my desktop and laptop that both work with hm2_eth)

That mainly depends on the drivers for your servos. The motors are one
thing, but you will need some kind of controller for them. There are
countless ways to do it, some need a simple analog voltage as speed or
torque setpoint with the control loop being closed by the computer, some
take a stream of pulses (usually stepdir, altough I consider this the
worst interface variant) and control position themselves. Even more
integrated ones may have a digital interface like Ethernet or RS485 or
something. The latter may give best performance when it comes to very
dynamic systems, but they are usually also the most complicated ones to
get up and running.

 2. Its written LinuxCNC can't work under laptop but works under raspbery

I don't think it's impossible on a Laptop, but because of all the power
management stuff usually found in their hardware and BIOS, it may be
very hard to obtain good realtime performance. This is especially true
if you need to generate reasonably fast signals, like for a stepdir
pulse train (needs deterministic latency in the range of a few
microseconds for decent performance). If you have a digital controller
which mainly only needs position commands, it should work also with a
Laptop. But always remember that most notebooks are not really made for
an industrial environment.

 3. How can I find CNC routers equipments?

Others can certainly comment much better on this subject. But it would
probably be good to know where you are located approximately to give
regional advice.

Cheers,
Philipp

That depends on what type of motors you have, and what sort of drives

LinuxCNC doesn't seem to work particularly usefully on the Raspberry

[Emc-users] kcalc in our distro's question

2015-04-07 Thread Gene Heskett
Greetings everybody;

At some time in the past, I recall having a version of kcalc that had a
menu of conversion utilities, such as inch/metric vice versa.

But that seems to have disappeared in later versions. 10.04.4, its on the
missing list.

I've been over to snapshot.debian.org and picked up the first release
about a decade old, but it seems to be missing there also.

Was this metricinchmetric conversion something you guys added?

I just found convertall which, while klunky to run because the menu's

Just thinking a bit (dangerous, I know). If LCNC can be made to run my

From what I've read online, only about 40 proLIGHT mills were made with
the 4th axis option (a HASS with a 5C spindle, pretty large for the
mill) and they are the only ones that can use a 4th axis with their
native software.
