Scott Cowger holds up his phone with the Uber app on it on Wednesday beside
his Tesla in Hallowell
]

Scott Cowger owns the Maple Hill Farm Inn and Conference Center in Hallowell
and decided to become an Uber driver to take guests to various destinations
around central Maine.

HALLOWELL — Scott Cowger has been an engineer, an environmentalist, a
politician and an innkeeper. Now he’s an Uber driver, and he’s doing it in
his Tesla.

Cowger, the co-owner of the Maple Hill Farm Inn and Conference Center, has
been driving for the popular ride-sharing service for about a month, and
he’s approaching 20 rides, making him among the only such drivers in central
Maine.

He started driving for Uber for a simple reason.

“I thought it would be a great idea to have it available to my guests at the
inn,” Cowger said during an interview at the Maple Hill Farm last week.
“They could tell me when they needed a ride, I’d turn on the app and take
them wherever.”

Uber is a global transportation technology company based in San Francisco
that operates in more than 630 cities worldwide, including other Maine
cities such as Portland. Uber drivers use their own vehicles, and riders use
an app on a smartphone to request a ride, pay for the ride and rate the
experience. There is no money exchanged between driver and rider, which is
one of the biggest selling points for the service.

An Uber representative declined to comment on how many Uber drivers there
are in Maine, and Cowger said he’s aware of one other person driving in this
area.

In cities around the globe, a rider would expect their Uber driver to pick
them up in a Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima or a similar vehicle. When Cowger
arrives in his Tesla Model S 75D, which sell for at least $70,000, the
reactions are different.

“People are totally thrilled when I show up in my Tesla,” he said with a
smile. “They just love it.”

Cowger said driving people around central Maine gives him another excuse to
drive his luxury electric vehicle, which is emblazed in the front and back
with license plates that read “NO FUMES.” He said a lot of people around
here don’t even know what a Tesla is, so he appreciates the opportunity to
talk about the vehicle and the company.

“I’ve become an electric vehicle enthusiast,” he said. “It’s been fun to
demonstrate what an electric car is and how much fun it is to drive.”

Since Cowger began driving last month, he’s driven all types of people, but
he said most of his customers have been people new to the area. They’ve used
Uber elsewhere, and when they come to Maine, it’s something they’re familiar
with, he said.

“I think a lot of the people here don’t know about Uber and don’t know how
it works,” Cowger said. “People that come here, though, are used to having
Uber, and there’s definitely a gap in services.”

In the past, Cowger has called taxis or arranged private car services for
guests needing a ride to the airport in Portland or to downtown Hallowell,
so he’s hoping that he can provide that service for his guests.

He has driven people around central Maine and to and from Waterville, and
last week, while in South Portland for Thanksgiving, he turned on his
service and took someone to the airport. He’s taken people to bars in
Hallowell and other places and have taken some home, though he said he tends
to turn the service off late at night.

Cowger thinks there is definitely a demand for the service in central Maine,
but he doesn’t think enough people know it’s available.

“More drivers would be great, too, because we’d have more coverage,” he
said. “It’s less expensive than taking a cab, but people just don’t know
about it.”

Recently, Uber has been in the news because of a security breach and hack of
its network that left 57 million user accounts exposed. Uber paid $100,000
to the hackers to delete the data and did not tell regulators or users that
their information was stolen.

Cowger wasn’t an Uber driver when the company was hacked, and he said he’s
had nothing but smooth and seamless interactions with the service. There is
an even an Uber rep who has office hours in Portland.

As a Tesla owner, Cowger — after increasing his total number of rides given
— can qualify and register as an UberSelect driver, which is a premium
service that costs a little more to the customer but pays more to the
driver.

“It’ll be more worth my while to do short

The KUV100 with the electric drivetrain will join the eVerito and the e2o
Plus as Mahindra’s offerings in the EV market

Mahindra & Mahindra looks poised to flood the market with electric vehicles
(EVs) when the boom begins. This has become even more evident after an
electric KUV100 was spotted testing for the first time. Mahindra had earlier
confirmed that the company will be introducing two new electric vehicles by
the end of 2019. The KUV100 Electric will be the first of two new EVs that
will join the already existing fleet of EVs such as the eVerito, e20 Plus
and eSupremo. Later, all Mahindra cars based on a monocoque platform and
powered by an internal combustion engine are likely to feature an electric
variant as well ...

Speaking of the KUV100 that was caught testing, it’s clear from the picture
that the vehicle doesn’t feature a visible tailpipe. Other visible
differentiator is the barely visible black cable that runs from the rear
window to the bottom of the hatchback. The piping is camouflaged by the
fiery red wrapping and the black rear bumper.

The Mahindra KUV100 Electric is most likely to be unveiled at the 2018 Delhi
Auto Expo, while its launch could occur by the end of 2018. This could be
followed by the XUV Aero, which was shown as a concept at the last Auto Expo
where it grabbed a lot of attention thanks to its coupe-like form. It is
rumoured that the XUV Aero might go into production with just an electric
drivetrain.

While Mahindra is at it, the homegrown manufacturer is also expected to
develop an electric version of all their vehicles which are based on a
monocoque chassis. This means that the XUV500 could also come with the
options of an electric drivetrain. Pawan Goenka himself has ruled out any
possibility of ladder-on-frame products going electric, so don’t expect an
electric Mahindra Scorpio to come our way anytime soon.

Tesla’s Model X races a sportscar towing an 1800kg trailer
2017/12/01 Stuart Marsh

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has posted a video to Instagram in which he pitted an
all-electric Tesla Model X against an Alfa Romeo sportscar in a drag race 0
and the Model X wins.

That would be surprising enough – considering the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider can
do 0-100km.h in 4.5 seconds – but there's a catch: The Model X was towing
another Alfa Romeo 4C Spider when it did it.

With the weight of the supercar and the trailer combined, the Model X was
towing roughly 1800kg, well within its factory tow limit of 2500 kg.

Whether it's a carefully scripted piece of Tesla advertising or a legitimate
test, the footage is incredible considering the 4C Spider weighs 1700 kg
less than the Model X.

The 4C is no slouch either. With a 1750 cc turbocharged four-cylinder engine
and weighing just 850kg, it's got a top speed of 258 km/h and can out-pace a
Lamborghini in a straight line.

Musk declined to provide comment on Instagram other than the simple label of
"Racing video part 2".

"This wasn't a scientific race and we didn't use any testing equipment
because frankly we thought it was a really stupid idea," says the voiceover
in the clip.

"But the point here is that the Alfa 4C is a really, really fast car and the
Model X is so much faster that you have to put a 4,000-pound trailer on it
to make it as fast as a really fast car."

Retailing for around $300,000 by the time you factor in Australia's luxury
car tax, the Model X represents the pinnacle of electric vehicles available
locally.

With all-wheel drive thanks to an independent electric motor on each wheel,
the Model X can go from 0-100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and its 100 kWh battery
provides drivers with 565 kilometres of range.

The electric vehicle “crew” – seven advanced auto shop students at Los
Alamos High School – assembled in the dry cold of Wednesday morning outside
the classroom/shop building.

[image] Auto shop students, members of the EV crew, talk with Tony Tomei in
the auto shop building Wednesday following Tomei’s donation of an electric
vehicle he modified from a 1983 Honda Civic station wagon. From left, Kurt
Michael Benner, Cameron Harlow, Colin Hehlen, Ryan Swart, Andrei Popa-Simil
and Tomei.

They were going to take their first look at the innards of Tony Tomei’s
converted Honda Civic station wagon.

Tomei had decided more than a year ago that his hand-assembled electric
vehicle, or EV, a masterpiece of simplicity and silence, needed a home where
it would do the most good.

What better good than educating the future?

Still, there’s a little bit of a feeling of loss, he said.

“I’m a little sad. It’s been a lot of work and a lot of love. I’ve used it
to promote the use of electric vehicles,” he said.

Tomei’s neighbor, LAHS auto shop teacher Scott Pomeroy was one of those with
access to students. Tomei also considered the University of New Mexico-Los
Alamos and Santa Fe Community College, he said.

A long-time proponent of the EV movement, Tomei said he hoped to pass on the
knowledge he had acquired in the ways a four-wheel vehicle powered by
electricity by way of rechargeable batteries is different than one powered
by gasoline from fossil fuels.

The rise of EVs – advancing technology of batteries and lower costs – is the
one bright spot in what he sees as today’s fraught political climate, Tomei
said, before talking to the students.

“It’s blossomed and I think it will get better in 2018,” he said.

For more than an hour Wednesday, Tomei fielded questions, explained details,
and gave the seven students, and teacher Pomeroy, some hands-on knowledge.

The students said they hope to learn more from Tomei’s Honda in order to
convert a donated, small race-style vehicle into an electric-powered one.

He suggested that his EV is like a “Model T.”

It will provide tangible information for them, said student Colin Hehlen.

“Ninety percent of the vehicles in the future will be electric,” said Hehlen
...

Taylor explained that students in the auto shop had built an EV scooter,
which is still there for students to study and adapt.

Kurt Michael Benner and other members of the crew asked Tomei questions to
delve into the nuts and bolts of electric propulsion.

“Torque is going to be tough,” Benner said.

Driven by challenges in building robots, Andrei Popa-Simil said he’d like to
learn about how to make electric-driven engines go faster.

Tomei took the students on a tour of the vehicle, starting with an
explanation of the batteries under the hood, all the way to the little
station wagon’s back end, also with batteries.

He explained that when driving an electric car, drivers should rarely pass
up a charging station. That led to some hands-on understanding of the
batteries he installed in the Honda – and advances from battery developers
are dropping the costs of electric-car batteries and improving the length of
the charge.

“Make sure you plug her in,” Tomei told Pomeroy after they had wrapped up
the donation.

Before Wednesday’s meeting, Tomei explained that creation of electricity
used to power an EV, such as charging a battery, pollutes 50 percent less
than the gasoline used to power a traditional vehicle.

The system that makes EVs go feature far fewer parts than traditional
vehicles – compare less than 10 to 4,000-plus, he said.

Asked if they had been in electric vehicles, few of the students said “yes.”

So, one of the Wednesday’s strongest lessons may have occurred during their
first EV car ride.

Their expressions of surprise – and excitement – helped assure Tomei that he
had done the right thing.

They were wide-eyed, he said, as he drove the car – with no engine sound or
rumble, and shifted gears without a clutch

“They said `it’s not supposed to be like this.’”

“I said `this is exactly how it’s supposed to be.’”

Bruce posted all these articles about the fact that this new 'Tax' bill is
going

Are people aware of this?

I certainly hope that they have written their representatives saying that they

The simple solution has to solve the problem, though, and in this case they
have a requirement that it run on gasoline. And electric motor controller
doesn’t work so well for that.

I saw this article describing the a newly designed engine for an Infiniti
Automobile. In order to get fuel economy and performance from the engine, the
design is very complex. All this can be accomplished by software in an
electric motor controller. The simplest solution is always the best solution.

...but not the most profitable solution. :-/

Given the auto company's huge legacy in ICE technology, a "new" design
is just a tiny tweak on an old design. That is quick and easy to make.
Given today's cheap offshore parts and labor, a complex solution is also
likely to be "cheap enough". So getting a bad solution on the market
early is more profitable than a good solution later (especially when all
you competitors are doing the same thing).

Finding the "best" solution takes more time. You also have to spend more
money on R and engineering talent. That costs money *now*, and won't
produce revenue until later. As the old saying goes, "a bird in the hand
is worth two in the bush".
