[EVDL] Would you buy a used EVSE from this clown?
Disclaimer: I have no formal training as a clown, but I do have a red foam nose gadget. We've been enjoying for many months an eMotorwerks EVSE with a 40 ampere rating (10KW). It's an unremarkable looking silver box, bolted to the side of our garage, connected to a 50 ampere circuit with the standard NEMA 14-50P (https://www.stayonline.com/product-resources/nema-straight-blade-reference-chart.asp). We purchased it in December 2016 and it's been running just great. It has just finished charging one of our Rav4EVs only minutes ago. The 40A output means that the computer in the car is pessimistic about the duration of the charge, by as much as two hours. If your EV can accept this higher rate, why settle for less? Why would I want to sell it, you might ask. You might not, but I'll tell you anyway. When we purchased the EVSE, I had decided that I didn't need to know all the fun data that is now available to those buyers who selected the internet-connected versions and went for the bottom dollar high-output version instead. As time has passed, as it is wont to do, I've discovered that I really do want to know all that fun data after all. I don't have need for two, as I live and breathe (and charge) in only this one location. We paid the retail price of US$500, which is almost as much as the net-connected version. Would you be willing to own this silver box for a fraction of the price, say US$300 (plus appropriate shipping charges via USPS) and have that wonderful high-speed charging at your fingertips? If you would, please send money, but let's start with an email. If you like, I can send an unremarkable photo of the current installation of the unremarkable silver box. The J1772 handle is in excellent condition and the long charging cable is undamaged. What I would like to happen is that I get a commitment of purchase, at which time I'll order the net-connected version. When it arrives, I'll notify the buyer and prepare to ship out the current one. We have the toy EVSE that comes with the vehicle for 110V charging, but 30-40 hour charge times is really impractical, don't you think? I'm aware that for sale postings are permitted for a one-time, private offering, not for commercial gain. If this is incorrect, I'll destroy the red foam nose. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My charger is set to be the right voltage but the old cells being 22 in series string they need to equalized out at the top/end of the charge. this requires some battery baby sitting, if your cells are staying very well balanced then your voltage cut off method/gadjet may be good . your ebay gadget coud also be be good for those wanting to do a lower state of charge, like turn the voltage down 5 volts for a 10% lower top charge. Re: [EVDL] plusing charger controller
I think Ken and I are looking for the same thing (I hope). I'm looking to use "dumb" (non CAN Bus) chargers with a cell pack with a BMS (or in Ken's case maybe no BMS). In my case the chargers I have are designed for lead acid so they have a higher finishing voltage than acceptable for the pack. Basically employ a circuit that measures voltage and turns a relay on & off as needed, cycle as necessary or timed. I think these would be much similar to those ebay programmable digital thermostats with relay, except with voltage instead. As the pack reaches top charge, the relay would see the high voltage and open a relay, likely connected to the AC side of the charger and turn it off. I understand with a BMS that as per cell voltage is reached shunts/resisters are used, what happens when the pack is fully charged without a smart signal to the charger? Do the shunts just continue to work absorbing charge/ generating heat? [EVDL] dashed/kaput/its sold Jim: ?seeking EVSE-share experiences & advice
1st my thanks for the responses. Status: That old house 4sale near the sa va hospital (within walking, crutching, e-mobility distance) is now in a pending state. Someone else made a bid for the house that was accepted = its sold Jim). I thought I had enough time as it had been on the market for over 400 days with no takers. Then suddenly, it is snapped up. Hmm ... seems like the sa housing market sells quite quick ... (that is what I was already told a couple weeks ago by a couple of local homeowner gals. And now I've seen how quick: ouch). I best get my act together and have cash in hand to nab the next house I want, asap, (else get left face down in the dirt). This revolutionary two seat electric vehicle features pedal generators for the driver to charge up the engine on the go. The car provides you with all the exercise benefits of a bike, while travelling at speeds of up to 120mph. It’s designed to allow drivers to exercise on their commute while covering longer distances at higher speeds and staying protected from bad weather conditions. More effective and protective than an e-bike, the Twike lets you exercise on your commute While it’s unlikely that your pedalling will be enough to fully charge the vehicle, it will keep the battery topped up for longer. And the makers claim that the vehicle has a battery range of 310 miles between charges. What if your sharing the ride? Another set of pedals at the passenger’s side adds a further power boost. So how do you drive a pedal car without hitting your knees on the steering wheel? Simple - it doesn’t have one. Instead a pair of push-pull levers allow you to steer the vehicle. The car uses levers to steer, so you can better control it while pedaling The Twike has a waterproof, lockable cabin and a small boot at the back to add further practical features that benefit it over an e-bike. Throughout the EU it can be driven on a range of different car and motorcycle licenses, depending on its power output. [EVDL] EVLN: eco-volta.com pr touts lower li-ion pack fire risk
https://www.advancedsciencenews.com/preventing-fire-in-electric-vehicles/ Preventing Fire in Electric Vehicles March 18, 2019 Martin Grolms [image https://www.advancedsciencenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Preventing-Fire-in-Electric-Vehicles.jpg Image Credit: ecovolta ] ecovolta is introducing a new safety concept in its lithium-ion batteries to reduce the risk of battery fires and cell explosions in e-mobility applications. In the case of mechanical damage to a battery pack in an e-car, a high current initially flows through the affected region and the temperature rises locally. In conventional battery solutions, the cell is affected directly, with its material expanding rapidly, which could lead to explosions and battery fires. Now, the Swiss battery system manufacturer ecovolta [ http://www.eco-volta.com/ ] reports that with its new battery packs, the temperature rises only locally at the cell junction in the case of mechanical damage. This junction then melts, separating the damaged cell from the intact components. The rest of the pack remains functional– only its capacity sinks as the capacity of the separated cell is lost, as indicated by comprehensive laboratory trials. The new safety concept is incorporated in all ecovolta traction batteries, as the company told. This allows for capacities ranging from 10Wh to several hundred kWh and voltages of 12–600V as well as any desired battery shape. “This ecovolta concept offers e-mobility suppliers a battery solution that makes the highest safety standards economical even for small and mid-sized vehicle series,” says ecovolta CTO Paul Hauser. Consumer protection advocate Ralph Nader's 1965 book 'Unsafe at Any Speed: The Designed-In Dangers of the American Automobile' was critical of the corvair's safety record. (Photo: AP) ] Jay Leno talks about electric cars with consumer tech reporter Dalvin Brown. Josmar Taveras, USA TODAY Comedian Jay Leno knows his car history: He's tinkered with a Depression-era Ford, owns a Lamborghini from the 1960s and likes to point out the strengths of a notorious Detroit lemon. The stand-up and former "Tonight Show" host stopped by USA TODAY last week where he discussed the past and future of cars, and offered a bit of wisdom for people on the market for a new vehicle. Over the years, the star of "Jay Leno's Garage" on CNBC has amassed a multimillion-dollar collection of more than 250 vehicles, including a 1994 McLaren F1 that he says is the greatest car of the 20th century, a 1969 Lamborghini Miura S and a 1970 Mazda Cosmo which is one of the first rotary-powered sports cars, according to Leno. He has a 1954 Jaguar XK120M Coupe, which was one of the most successful sports cars of its era, and a Bentley Speed Six that helped establish the company's racing tradition in the late 1920s. So what does a person who has an extensive assemblage of motorcycles, iconic daily drivers and Smithsonian-worthy vehicles look for in a car? "I like cars that are noble failures and cars that were ahead of their time in their time," Leno said. He used the Chevrolet Corvair as an example. Prohibitive costs: Working full-time for health coverage? Many who want part-time jobs are stymied by costs The notorious compact car saw two generations of production from 1960 to 1969. It was propelled to fame by Ralph Nader in 1965 when the attorney wrote a scathing book, Unsafe At Any Speed, in which he went through a litany of ways that cars are unsafe – from lack of restraint systems to unpadded dashboards. Leno, who acknowledged the controversy surrounding the car, said, "To me, the Corvair was the most innovative car Chevrolet ever built. It was brilliant — one of the most European (looking) American cars ever made." "You can find them from $800 to $900. The best one in the world can't be more than 20 grand," Leno said. Another vintage vehicle the comedy legend is a big fan of is the 1934 Ford Pickup truck. Leno said it was the first car he ever owned. "I bought it when I was 14 and spent two years working on it, getting ready for when I got my license." While shooting an episode of his car series, he said that the car now sits somewhere in the northeast, near Andover, Massachusetts. "Hopefully I'll find that one," he said in the 1-minute clip. While Leno has a horde of well-kept antique cars in a custom-built bunker in Burbank, California, the self-proclaimed "big car lover" also has an affinity for modern vehicles with high-tech features. "I have a Tesla Model S. That's the future," Leno told USA TODAY. "I predict a child born today, most likely by the time they're 18, may not have ever ridden in an internal combustion car. I think electric will be the future." The Tesla isn't the only EV Leno has in his collection. He also owns a 1909 Baker Electric which he said can travel 80 miles on a charge. "It wasn't until recently with new battery technology that you get hundreds and hundreds of miles (on a charge)," Leno said. "I think we'll see a thousand-mile range pretty soon," Leno said about battery-powered cars. The stand-up said that nowadays, you don't have to be a car aficionado to pick out a quality vehicle that can stand the test of time ... Tesla's latest: Tesla's Model Y is coming, but has this Model 3 owner's yearning been fulfilled? "All modern cars are good. There really aren't any bad cars anymore," Leno said. "Mufflers don't rust out anymore; cars don't rust anymore. They're made with stainless steel and different alloys. So almost all automobiles are pretty good, which means when they get 10 to 15 years old they're still good." [EVDL] EVLN: Fastned (rapid) EVSE.uk foothold
https://insideevs.com/more-fastned-charging-stations-coming-to-uk/ More Fastned Charging Stations Coming To UK 2019-03-16 MARK KANE [image https://d2t6ms4cjod3h9.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1727.jpg ] Fastned gets a foothold for its network in the UK Dutch company Fastned has very ambitious goals to build a European network of 1,000 fast charging stations and is already approaching 10% of the plan, having 88 stations up and running. The expansions from the Netherlands progresses in a few directions – to Germany, UK, Belgium and Switzerland. Most recently, Fastned won a second tender in the UK for 5 more charging stations, which will be included in the network (although the infrastructure will be owned by the North East Joined Transport Committee). Each of the five new stations in Gateshead, Blyth, Whitley Bay, Washington, and Kingston Park are to get initially two 50 kW fast chargers. Hopefully, it will be expanded at a later stage to 175 kW. Fastned is already building two stations in the UK, which brings total to 7. More will be installed in the future. “Fastned won a second tender in the UK led by the North East Joined Transport Committee. Fastned will build and operate five fast charging stations (hubs) for electric vehicles across the region. Each station will initially house two 50 kW fast chargers (known as “rapid” chargers in the UK) that will deliver 100% renewable electricity. Fastned intends to build and operate the five fast charging stations in Gateshead, Blyth, Whitley Bay, Washington, and Kingston Park. These fast charging stations will enable fully electric cars to fast charge their batteries and will be added to Fastned’s European network. This network currently consist of 88 stations in the Netherlands and Germany and is expanding rapidly. Two other Fastned stations are currently under development in Newcastle and Sunderland as part of the Go Ultra Low NE programme.” “The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the UK Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). The stations will be owned by the North East Joined Transport Committee. Fastned will manage the stations’ design and construction, and operate and maintain them as part of its growing network.” Michiel Langezaal, CEO Fastned: “Fastned was founded to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, so we are pleased we can start offering fast charging infrastructure in the North East of England. Reliable fast charging infrastructure will make fully electric vehicles just as practical as cars with internal combustion engines. Fastned has the ambition to build a European network of 1000 fast charging stations and aims to build more fast charging stations in the UK. Councillor Martin Gannon, Chair of the North East Joint Transport Committee and Leader of Gateshead Council: “The five rapid charging hubs will help further establish the North East of England as a leader in electric mobility and are very good news for electric drivers in our region. The hubs can provide electric freedom and ease of travelling for local commuters, commercial fleets, and travellers passing through the region.” [© insideevs.com] + https://www.kqed.org/pop/110365/who-charges-those-annoying-electric-scooters-meet-the-juicers Who Charges Those Annoying Electric Scooters? [EVDL] EVfires: CYN100k/US$15k BJEV 407EV e-vans.cn spontaneous combustion
https://qz.com/1575817/electric-vehicles-from-chinese-car-maker-bjev-are-catching-fire/ Electric vans from one of China’s biggest EV makers are catching fire March 19, 2019 Echo Huang [image https://cms.qz.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Beiqi-Weiwang-407EV-2019-e1552976194357.png ] Improving technology means that electric vehicles (EV) are able to go for ever-longer ranges, but it’s also challenging the safety limits of batteries, as one leading Chinese EV maker is finding out. So far in 2019, there have been least three incidents of electric minivans of the same model catching fire while charging, with the latest incident happening last week in Shenzhen, news outlet National Business Daily (link in Chinese) reported yesterday (March 18). The vehicles in question are the Beiqi Weiwang 407EV, manufactured by BJEV [ https://qz.com/1489228/beyond-the-tesla-bubble-the-future-of-electric-cars-is-being-scripted-in-china/ ] (paywall), an EV maker linked to state-owned manufacturer BAIC, a staffer at the Shenzhen Electric Vehicle Application and Promotion Center confirmed to Quartz. Founded in 2009, BJEV is one of the country’s biggest manufacturers of battery electric vehicles. Last year, it topped sales of battery passenger cars in China, selling about 150,000 units (link in Chinese). BJEV didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment. The incidents come at a time as China’s rapid advance into electric cars is now placing a greater focus on increasing battery performance, with the government using the energy density of batteries as a key factor in determining the subsidies given to carmakers. But the measure has also drawn criticism (link in Chinese). In theory, high energy density means (paywall) that batteries can last longer, are cheaper, and are also lighter in weight. That, however, poses more serious challenges to battery safety because energy-rich metals like lithium tend to be reactive. That’s part of the reason why China has a surveillance network working 24/7 to monitor EVs and prevent batteries from catching fire, though it’s unclear if the 407EVs made by BJEV are part of the network. Starting at a price of around 100,000 yuan ($15,000) each, the EV407 minivan has a range of 220 kilometers (136 miles). The van is designed for use in urban logistics services, according to the company (link in Chinese). Since the incidents, three companies including Lalamove, a Hong Kong-based logistics firm which has operations in China, have stopped using the model, a news outlet focusing on the battery industry reported (link in Chinese).
