Bob, Please be one of the people who amazes the medical profession by living many years beyond their predictions. Your creativity and workmanship are inspiring and must continue. Conversions still have the plus that shadetree mechanics can work on them more easily than they can factory EVs. The EV components are generic, so they're easily replaceable without the onboard computer mating dance that factory EVs usually require. On the downside, they tend to need more of that shadetree machanic work than the typical factory EV. Also, in most cases they're not really suitable for someone who isn't a tinkerer. As far as value, factory EVs have pulled the rug out from under conversions. You can buy a used 2011-2012 Nissan Leaf with a clapped-out battery for $3- 4k, and drive it like a normal car except for the 40 mile or so range. Adjusting for inflation, that's about what a used conversion cost 20 years ago, a conversion that probably got the same 40 miles of range even with a new battery. Given that, who's going to pay thousands for an unsuported, quirky-driving homebrew conversion with few creature comforts and (at best) a little more range? I can't say for sure that my experience is typical, but I just sold a 1991 Escort conversion with nickel-iron batteries on Ebay. It needed some work, but was mostly in decent shape. I got just over $250. David Roden, EVDL moderator & general lackey To reach me, don't reply to this message; I won't get it. On 8/19/20 11:43 AM, Lucas Travassos via EV wrote: However, the cost of EV in Brazil is prohibitive. I believe that the conversion from ICE to EV is more acceptable for most of the people. I don't know the cost penalty of a new EV in Brazil but factory EVs have dealt a death blow to conversions in the US. There are thousands, perhaps 10s of thousands, of abandoned conversions in the US. For pretty good reasons. The maintenance of conversions has proven to be nightmarish. Each one is at least a little different. There are essentially no professional conversion repair shops. Very much DIY. You may well have more talent/skill than the average US conversion owner. But, maybe not. Conversions have proven to be hobbies rather than sources of cost effective, reliable transportation. Factory EVs have proven to be far more cost effective. Even the horrible ones like Leaf. Consider the mileages achieved by conversions in the US. In the old lead days, as many as 10k miles was very rare. With newer lithium conversions, probably up to 20-30k miles. Put another way: conversions are almost certainly abandoned before they hit 30k of EV miles. My 2006 Hyundai probably had far higher miles than average for a conversion. 50k very painful miles but now dead in storage. Cost over $1/mile. My first Tesla is now down to about $.70/mile and still on the road piling up miles. Painless and reliable miles. There is a vast amount of originally expensive conversion components available very cheap in the US. Of course, you won't find much in the way of good batteries but you might consider shopping in the US for other components. Jukka, in Finland, had what seemed like a great idea a few years back. Make conversions standard and establish a chain of repair and conversion shops. "Do it right and repeat". I believe that effort failed but I don't know the details. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub ARCHIVE: http://www.evdl.org/archive/index.html INFO: http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
Re: [EVDL] Wanted: S10 EV
I have a 1970 Datsun conversion sitting in front of my house that I am considering getting rid of. It's fully functional, but very limited range, and in need of lots of TLC. If you are interested shoot me an email. I don't have a specific price in mind, but I no longer have much passion for it and would love to pass it along to someone who could enjoy it. Shoot me an email if you are interested. http://evalbum.com/1524 Damon From: EV on behalf of Alan Arrison via EV Sent: Tuesday, August 18, 2020 7:54 PM To: ev@lists.evdl.org Cc: Alan Arrison Subject: Re: [EVDL] Wanted: S10 EV It would help if you gave your location and rough price you are looking to spend.
