That has been the ideal option for quite some time, but the utilities are
starting to push hard to get dirty liberal bleeding-heart hippie solar people
off their nice clean coal grid -- to the point of ensuring that solar customers
pay as much as, if not more than, they would without panels on their rooftops.

Anybody doing solar today should have an exit strategy for dropping off the
grid. Go with a grid-tie system if at all practical, but make sure you have a
way of affordably upgrading to an off-grid system without having to discard
your inverter or the like.

Nope. Again, no menion of a high voltage DC input from solar panels for
nominal continuous operation in grid-tie mode.

Nice! And it looks like (pg 18, installation manual) you can use the bypass
breakers in the GSLC to act as service disconnect if you use only one unit.
Really nice system!

Re: [EVDL] Cheap solar for EV charging

2015-01-19 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
My own approach to solar would be to have it grid-intertie only,
since I already charge my truck from the grid and can use its
battery bank as backup power if needed (though not automatic,
I need to roll out an extension cord from the 3kVA inverter in my
truck into the house and plug the fridge and other appliances over).

If there would be a prolonged power outage and I have solar panels,
then my approach would be to make sure that I have lower than 400VDC
output from the panels, run that straight into the AC input of a
switching power supply that is used as charger for my truck's battery bank.

There are plenty MPP Tracking (switching) charge controllers that would be
appropriate to charge the battery that supplies the inverter.
There used to be a line of Trace, later Xantrex inverters that could be
both stand-alone and grid intertie and switch on the fly. Utilities did not
like those, it was hard to get approval for them since a mis-wire could make
lines live during a power outage.

I don't know of any currently available battery based inverters that can
accept a PV array input. They all assume that you are using a charge
controller for the DC power coming into the batteries, and they only handle
the power going out for the DC-AC conversion, or charge the batteries from
an AC source.

[EVDL] Cheap solar for EV charging

2015-01-18 Thread Robert Bruninga via EV
To continue the efficiency debate for y our solar carport, there are some
very low prices at

http://sunelec.com

28 cents/watt amorphous panels 1.1 x 1.3m 5.8w/sqft
44 cents/watt big 4' x 7.7' panels 12.8W/sqft
64 cents/watt normal 3.3' x 5.4' giving 13.6W/sqft

So again, it you have PLENTY of surface area, then the amorphous panels are
some very cheap stuff. But take more that 2.5 times the structure.

They also have a 6 kW grid-tie/off-grid inverter for a 48v battery sysem,
but best I can tell, no provision for high voltage DC solar input?
