Restricting who can send to a DL
Hello I have an distribution list and I wish to limit who can send to it. I have already restricted which internal users can do this by adding them in the accept messages from list in the delivery restriction tab of exchange admin. And this works fine I now need to allow one external address to be able to send to this distribution list. What I have done is create custom recipient for the external address add the custom recipient to the list of address the DL is allowed to accept messages from. Whenever the external user sends a message to the DL they get the following error Your message To: distribution list Subject: whatever the subject is Sent:Thu, 4 Oct 2001 16:08:15 +0100 did not reach the following recipient(s): Distribution list name on Thu, 4 Oct 2001 16:09:22 +0100 A restriction in the system prevented delivery of the message. The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a= ;p=CAE Electronics ;l=CAEUKEX010110041509TRT4MQ8J MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:CAEPLC:CAEUKEX01 Have I missed something when I was setting this up or am I just doing this the wrong way. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this problem greatly received. RE: Losing data after moving to Exchange server
No, it had been delivered by the linux mail server. She was just moving these old eMails to her new Exchange Mail Box. At the time she was moving the mails from the .pst to the Mail Box, her new mails were being delievered to her Mail Box Inbox on the Exchange Server. I ran ScanPST over 7 times now, and still there is no error. On Thu, 04 Oct 2001, you wrote: And the internet mail was delivered to the PST by your Exchange server? Disaster Recovery
In light of the recent WTC tragedy, I was wondering if anyone on the list had lost exchange servers, or were forced into DR by the situation? How did you handle business continuity, and was there anything that you learnt that would change your strategy going forward? How long did it take you to get things back online? I'm guessing that there are admins out there that were in this situation that had to get mail going in order to keep the (global) enterprise functioning. RE: Restore
Try doing a BLB with several hundred or several thousand users on an Exchange server and you can see why a BLB is BAD. It will take far more time and tons more tape than necessary. You obviously have an exception here with only 5 users, but then one would almost ask why you are running Exchange in the first place with so few users. LOL...That's some good cold medicine! Well, I gave up trying and am now putting the all the addresses in to a contacts public folder. Not sure I like having it this way yet but haven't found any other alternatives. The idea of distribution lists is valid, except the teachers should be able to email a parent individually and by groups. We wouldn't want the group to get an email saying your son failed a science test - when it only applied to one student - talk about the phone calls the teacher would get. -Original Message- From: Tener, Richard [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 05, 2001 8:35 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Multiple Contacts? lmao at the email address -Original Message- From: Mike Morrison [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 05, 2001 8:32 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Multiple Contacts? Exchange Listers: Thanks for the help!
A note of gratitude: We fixed a problem with our Exchange 2000 server 2 nights ago, and we did it without spending any additional money. We are a school that doesn't have a lot of cash to spend on incident calls to Redmond, and we would prefer to spend our money on our students and faculty. I got great information from the folks on the listserve, delivered with speed, accuracy, and it was a wonderful experience. I checked the FAQ before I posted, but still couldn't find the exact solution to my problem. To think what I would have had to pay to get this solution (or the horror in having to report to my community that the problem could not be fixed) still frightens me. We're not brilliant, but we're not idiots, either. I will gladly take the slings and sarcasms and witticisms (and occasional flashes of literary greatness--not you Martin--and concern) to wade into this source of knowledge and genuine (when you filter out all the posing and kvetching) professional pride in running a top-flight messaging operation for our companies. We know a bargain when we see one. So thanks, guys (oops, gals, too--Missy, I worship the ground you walk on!). We don't get out much, but if events ever bring you near Philly, please come by and we'll buy as many rounds as necessary to let you know how much we appreciate all the folks who contribute, who inform, and who challenge us to do better, be more proactive, be more self-managing and knowledgeable about these communication tools that so many depend on. Last time I checked, this wasn't a pay-for-play site, but it sure could be. Thanks again for all the help (okay, cue the music, grab the marshmallows, and let's all hold hands and sing Kumbaya). RE: Disaster Recovery
We have a DR plan in place. We test recovery every six months. We fly out of state to a Sungard facility with only our backup tapes, our documentation (which we keep off site) and restore our system. For exchange, use the FAQ of course and the DR one and two whitepapers off technet. We restore everything including the Unix boxes, NT\2000, Terminal servers\Citrix, LAN and WAN. We have a separate PVC pointing to Phoenix location we use to restore the WAN. Everytime we do this we learn a ton more about being prepared. Exchange was the one and only thing that we had an issue with on the last trip and that was a backupexec thing, we now use NTbackup and have practice a few restores, piece of cake using NTBACKUP. We have had two exchange failures in the last three years, I won't talk about the first one but the second one was back up in less then three hours. Hope that helps, Gordon -Original Message- From: Amir El Aziq [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 05, 2001 3:16 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Disaster Recovery In light of the recent WTC tragedy, I was wondering if anyone on the list had lost exchange servers, or were forced into DR by the situation? Licensing
Hi, I'd be grateful if someone could clarify the licensing situation with exchange, the MS site is not particularly informative in this regard. I understand that exchange CAL's must be bought 'per-seat' for each device that will access the server, although academic organisations can buy 'per-mailbox' licensing. I also understand that a CAL is required for OWA access. How does this work? What about users checking their mail from internet cafes etc? I've got a PDC (Its the only server in the domain), Its got Exchange 5.5 on it. I'm doing the following; Upgrading it to 2000 ADV Server, create a new AD forest and leave it in mixed mode. Works fine, Exchange 5.5 happy, whole server happy. I run Exchange 2000 setup, run the ADC thingy - Fine. On completion of install, no Exchange what so ever...All services start ok, but it does not replicate the 5.5 site into 2000 no-one has accessAlso non of the connectors work. Doesn't CDO have an SMTP method? Use it. Use Blat.exe to send SMTP. Use ASPMail (http://www.aspemail.com/) Write your code in Perl and use Net::SMTP. Excuse me if this topic has been discussed before but I'm new to the group. Here's our environment configuration: ***IIS 5.0 server running under local IUSR account with CDO 1.21 installed. No Outlook installed, no SMTP service running. This is the way we'd like to keep it. ***Separate Exchange 5.5 server. Our goal is to use CDO to send e-mail from a secure IIS server via the Exchange server. From what I've been able to dig up regarding the above environment configuration it is only possible to send messages with Exchange via a Windows NT domain account that Exchange is able to validate. Because our IIS machine is running under a local machine account, we are unable to use CDO to interface with the Exchange machine. We've tried to impersonate a domain user as outlined on http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q248/1/87.asp without luck. We've also verified that setting the IIS anonymous account to use a domain account does in fact work. We believe this to be a terribly insecure configuration. Is this incorrect? Why would anyone allow an IIS box to run under an NT domain account? Are there any other options? Just lighten up some. Don't take everything to heart. Most of the time when they are getting on you, they are trying to help you. Hmmm... I've been rude before and if you thought that was rude I've got an eye opening experience for you... Now back to your subject... Any one of us could give you any kind of advice on MS licensing issues. However, when you get audited and you're asked where you got your information. What are you going to tell them? Well uh, the guys on this Exchange list group told me that I could do it this way... Soon after you'll quite possibly be paying a fine for incorrect licensing and wondering why versus calling your sales rep and having them clarifying your licensing in writing so you don't get burned. SystemMailbox (Not System Attendant) - Ex2k
ex2k srvr 3 storage groups 11 db's For various reasons, I renamed the .edb for DB1 in Storage Group 1 and let the db recreate itself. The System Attendant was created (as it should) however, the SystemMailbox has *not* re-created itself. I haven't been able to find the SystemMailbox in any of the books I have, and technet doesn't say much very useful about it, except one little ambiguous altering items in the system mailbox may cause detrimental effects to the stability of the Exchange 2000 environment. 1. Does anyone have a reference/resource about the SystemMailbox? 2. What is it/what does it do/how screwed did I just make myself? 3. Does it eventually re-create itself? RE: Licensing
well, i 'give a flip', that's why i asked! of course we talk to the licensing rep, but I asked because: a) the licensing reps don't always sound entirely convincing b) the information on the MS site is ambiguous c) there's nothing about licensing in the FAQ d) i didn't think anyone would mind. i might ask for some friendly advice though, and take that into consideration along with what MS and the vendor says.? If you can open it up yourself, I'd do that, export it all to PST, blow the mailbox away, recreate and put the info back into the new mailbox. RE: Restore
Why BLB = BAD. A true tale from my last company. After 3 months of banging their heads, the idiots at a remote site got BLB restores to work in test. So they ran it on the production box. I was adamant that the Exchange online backup be run first. That took about 2-3 hours. The BLB took over 12 hours. So, the VP needed a message restored from the previous day that was shift-deleted. Can't do it yet. BLB was still in progress. He has to wait. The next day, they restore his mailbox. And the message was not there! VP is unhappy. So they go to the next day's tape (a day later). Still no message. Seems like it came and went between BLB's. VP is now beyond irate. Calls the CIO. Who calls me. I have DumpsterAlwaysOn. Go into VP's mailbox and give him his message in 2 minutes. Oh yes, most of their problems were permissions/UghServe related. So the full restore did not work. While they had practiced restores, they never opened a mailbox. Just accepted the logging information that the restore was complete. Do not waste your time on BLB. Deleted Items Retention, DumpsterAlwaysOn on an admin workstation, Circular logging OFF. Practice restores. Read the FAQ. Sleep easy. And keep the untrained away from the server. I also understand that a CAL is required for OWA access. How does this work? What about users checking their mail from internet cafes etc? I don't think Don's been rude at all. What he was trying to say was that you should really talk to your supplier because they have the best answer for you. The only right answer for licensing questions would come from Microsoft or their distributor that you work with. The bottom line is that anything we say here regarding licensing is just an opinion. There is nothing we can say that you can take to the bank. Call Microsoft 5x. Each time you will get a difffent answer. RE: mailbox causes Outlook to freeze
If that's not it, try opening the user's mailbox using an Exchange client. If it loads successfully, you may have some sort of corruption in her tasks or calendar folder. If that's the case, you may want to: 1. Attempt starting Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch. If that doesn't help proceed to step 2. 2. ExMerge her calendar out with the archive option 3. Open the mailbox with Exchange client again, and delete the calendar folder. 4. Start outlook with the /resetfolders switch. If that works, you'll have to weed through the exported appointments to see which one's causing the problem. -Original Message- From: Bowles, John L. I am seeing a lot of mail loops on our SMTP IIS box. We don't accept inbound or relaying. They all come internally. It seems that in them there are missing components in the headers and I am wondering if that could cause it. Here is a sample header from one. Notice that there is a lot of missing info. RE: mailbox causes Outlook to freeze
Hello, Here are some Q articles I've come across for similar problems, and in general some other things to try: -Change the default View to something else. A view, default view, may be causing the problem. -Can you view it through OWA? -There's a CDO patch post SP4 that might help. -Search the archives for outlook hang , you're not the first to encounter this in the last couple months.
