I found some strange things after I installed 8.0
If I check permissions for audio, they are like this:

I am having problems with correct memory detection on two machines. Both
machines have 1.5GB and LM8.0 on both of these detects 1.0GB. On one of the
machines, 7.2 was installed earlier and it detected 1.5GB correctly.
1. ASUS K7V (VIA) Motherboard

What gcc version is shipped with LM 7.2? When I say gcc --version, it shows
me 2.95.3! while the latest stable is 2.95.2 (correct me if i am wrong)
also, if i check under /usr/bin, the actual gcc executable is gcc-2.95.2
What is all this?

there was an error in the logrotate which caused this probleem.. simply
delete the /var/log/mail and /var/log/news directories and update to
the new logrotate (its in MandrakeUpdate too) check this list for the
previous discussion on this when the problem was found!

You can simply press Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace to restart X incase it freezes..
Also, try changing your window manager if you get a freeze.. i.e if it
freezes under KDE , try GNOME the next time.. I found GNOME 1.2 to be much
more stable than KDE 1.1.2.. and KDE 2 beta is also ultra-stable..

includes buffered and cached memory which will be given away to

The default login that u see is part of KDE.. by changing KDE to GNOME in
that file, I got the GNOME login manager instead of the default KDE..
And I didn't use KDE screensaver coz even it couldnt' verify my login!

why are you trying to get KDE 1.1.2 to work on 7.2beta? I see no reason to
upgrade to 7.2 other than KDE 2!! Every other thing you can manually
upgrade from 7.1 rather than trying to downgrade from 7.2.

We have lots of 7.0 and 7.1 workstations and a Solaris RAID.. We need to
synchronize date and time on all the machines to the RAID.. or all the
machines including the RAID to some standard time over the internet.

I upgraded all KDE 1.94 RPMs yesterday, then I logged out and tried to log
back in and .. boom... I cannot login!! It says login refused no matter
what I do! No user (even root) is allowed to login!!! (the login problem
is just at this mandrake GUI login.. i can login normally from other

and have nonrealistic limits set - or is this machine a mail server with
lots of users that is overloaded?

I installed Mandrake on a friend's machine and the modem didn't work.. He
def. had a h/w modem.. but it was a PCI modem.. so after browsing and

There are two cases here.. 1. needing to know how to install a card .. 2.
needing to know to get networking started.
In (1), Linux still lacks coz h/w vendors don't give out drivers.. thats
why I say check the supported card

to work, I will always go with the OS that allows me to not only see the dang

but to set up TCP/IP, DNS, NetBUI, WINS, and DHCP, and do all of this in less than

kernel is alive.. only the X dies.

and other Unices have XWindows builtin... thus it dosn't matter what
machine u are running the program on.. u can always just telnet/ssh to taht
machine and run the program there, but the display will be on u're

When I leave a Mandrake m/c on, with the default logon screen, X blanks the
screen after a short time.. how do I disable it or increase teh blanking
timnig?
I want people around me to be aware that teh machine is running Linux ;)..
like NT has the logon dialogue jumping around!

don't blame Mandrake when you don't have enuff knowledge and when u are
trying to install it alongside windoze on a small partition!

use setserial to put the modem on ttyS2 (COM3) and it shld work fine :)
your motherboard might have 2 serial ports running.. so make this the 3rd

Mandrake has samba installed by deafult...
server: I configured it through linuxconf... samba server.. add shares..
this allows you to make a directory on u're machine sharable by others thru
samba.. and u're machine will come up as NT server 4.1 on other windoze
machines!

I think you don't need imwheel in KDE 2.. I don't have it running anymore
(after upgrading to KDE 2 Beta 4). I am not so sure about KDE 1.1.2
The changes in Xconfig are necessary coz u are changing a hardware device..
