One of my favourite country classics (bear in mind I'm British so American

Talking country: here in the UK and Ireland Jim Reeves was mega-huge. Probably
a bigger star than in the States. I especially liked the "dub" song Distant

Dear Ann, the subject of this thread is' Great Country Classics'. If you
don't like country just don't listen; at any rate, don't try to bite my
ankles. Post your own favorite music. Thanks.

George Strait probably can't hold a candle to popular music played on
the radio up in Iowa these days - Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Brittany, Madonna,
and those new fellers, who are all going in One Direction. LoL!

But, don't be sorry. There are many European rock music fans that don't
quite get country music. Many don't realize the genesis of rock - it's
just uptempo folk and country music, with rockabilly and blues
Part of the history of pop music was the ASCAP strike and the rise of
BMI. Since radio stations had nothing to play during the strike they
went out and found unsigned country and folk artists and formed BMI.
Some of the acts weren't that good so gave country music a bad name.

Richard, you got me. I make all of my listening choices based on physical
appeal of the musician. Keep it to yourself. Here's a little harmonica for

You know, just about any music genre has at least a few exceptionally good
examples. But if most of it is "bland, conservative music for aging white
fuddy-duddies," those who are turned off by those qualities may never listen to
enough of it to discover those examples. That doesn't mean they won

music and the playing. Most of the time I don't even know what the
players look like until years later when I see them live, on TV or read
about them. Listening to the radio I've no idea what they really look

Thanks, great article for context. But I still won't listen much to radio
