The restaurant I went to yesterday doesn't have any black bean sauce
dishes on the menu. What regional cuisine is that from? Most Chinese
restaurants where I grew up in the northwest were Cantonese. Later
Szechuan restaurants began opening as well as Mongolian. Thai seems to
vary quite a bit due to family traditional recipes. And of course there
northern, southern and Punjabi Indian restaurants.

That wasn't exactly a mild rain we got last night that is still coming
down. And more rain is showing in the forecast. Like I said last
month, the climate has changed so much that rain would probably be
delayed until late January or February. On a KGO talk show someone
called in and said that the almanac even said it would be delayed. It
was the flatlanders who were getting alarmed about a drought.

Hopefully there is no cesium in this rain. Keep an eye on that here:

 It's a Cantonese dish, I believe.

Like chop suey many of the Cantonese restaurants had westernized
variations for the white devils. One of my favorites as kid was almond
fried chicken. The Cantonese restaurants usually made with deep fried
chicken topped with gravy. But other restaurants it's just stir fried
chicken with almonds.

The Tai Tung in Seattle had its Chinese menu (often up on a black board
towards the back) and then there were still items you just had to ask
the waiter for. Undoubtedly the best Chinese restaurant I've ever eaten
at though I'm sure there are some in SF that would give it a run for its
money. But I avoid going into SF. I even had a pass for Apps World
which opened yesterday and runs through today but am not attending.
Parking for an event in 2012 at Moscone cost me $28 for just two hours.
BART is a joke. Fortunately the pass was free.

Speaking of which, I decided to try lunch at the Chinese restaurant at
the top of the hill. Back in December of 2012 it closed as the folks
who ran it retired. Then a new management took it opened it in January
but they also closed last December. Their food was never popular and
they seemed to struggle with pricing. New owners opened it this week
with a 20% off grand opening sale. The first impression was not good as
the sweet and sour soup was a bit luke warm. However they made up for
it with this huge plate (and I do mean huge) of Kung Pao calalmari and
BBQ pork fried rice the latter steaming hot right out of the wok.

I could have used some Mandarin to communicate with one of the
waitresses who barely spoke English. They have freshly remodeled the
place which now makes better use of space. The 20% off special is also
all month.

The drought may be a bit off schedule as rain is expected tonight and
more through the weekend. We may not have a worse case drought after
all especially if it keeps doing this through May. But it is still
chilly for California and i wish I was more of a DYI'er and I would make
use of the plentiful sunlight to heat the house for free using solar
water panels.

I'm lesser yang in Chinese medicine and thus pork is supposedly very good for

I've had other black bean sauce entrées. One local restaurant had an
interesting noodle dish with black bean sauce. Chinese food ain't all
that special to me because I can actually cook up some of it myself.
Madame Wong's Long Life Chinese Cookbook is especially good for recipes
and cooking techniques. When I was in India would go to the back pages
of the restaurant menus where they have Chinese dishes which were far
less spicy and better for pitta types.

I also meant to mention that with this chilly weather we've been having
I brought my PGE bill down by just running my space heater in the
evening in the living room. Problem is it only brought it down a
whopping $7. I reduced my gas bill but increased my electric bill.
That's why I started looking into free heat. You can build the solar
water heaters out of rain spouts.

Share,

I'd bet that there's probably at least one Chinese restaurant in Fairfield,
IA. You can request for this dish even if it's not on the menu.

When we were passing through a little town in Idaho, I was surprised there was
one Chinese restaurant there. And, the owner and his family were probably the
only Asian family in that town too.

They are telling people to be careful driving in the rain. There are
lots of spinouts causing accidents. I say these people can't drive in
sunny weather let alone rainy.

I skipped going for my waterfront park walk and the downtown farmers
market. Being a former Seattlite that might sound strange but 1) the
rain here is usually heavier than anything they get in Seattle because
the Olympic mountains take away a lot of precipitation and 2) the wind
is around 20 mph so the farmers market will be fighting to keep their
booths from blowing away.
