Re: [Felvtalk] kitten with FeLV
Sandra, 1st thank you for taking in Penny. Mixing is such a personal decision. Like other I mix my positives and negatives. My negatives all had their FeLV vaccine and booster one month later before I mixed them. My positives were kittens when I rescued them and never threw off the virus. They were born with it. Older cats do not seem to be as susceptible to the virus or at least seem to have a better chance to throw off the virus. My oldest positives are going on 2 yrs old and the youngest is almost 1. You would never know Rocket was a positive kitty. Sissy, her sister, has always have swollen lymph glands. Mattie, the baby, is blind and a ball of energy. They play and eat with my negative kitties. There are a couple of other FIV groups too. At any rate, seems like the transmission is always said to be via very deep bite wound, and I never have neutered cats do that. I of course mix my FIV cats - they never get sick, do very well. They're the best! I have 2 FIV who I keep with 2 FeLV+. Of course the FIVs are vaccinated for FeLV. They are the sweetest cats. I have always heard that transmission is through deep bites, so I've never been worried about the others catching it. They live in the garage away from my other cats, which some people think is horrible, but it's a heated garage (I keep tortoises in it in the winter and aquatic turtles in there year round) and it stays very cool in the summer thanks to big trees and a cement floor. There are 3 big windows and the cats love watching the turtles inside and the birds and frogs outside. Their newest source of entertainment is a large black rat snake who seems to have taken up residence in the garage. Every time I try to catch the snake, he slithers off under a turtle tank or something, but he sure keeps the kitties occupied! Re: [Felvtalk] Adopted an FIV+
Be careful of the snake and cats. If he is big enough, he could cause a lot of harm. The garage sounds wonderful. Copper and Thomas Cougar and Dixie before them loved my attached garage. The boys are constantly asking for patrol time there and, when they have their way (which is most of the time) they spend hours there daily. I don't know what the lure is but all three cats wanted to be in the garage. On Jul 4, 2009, at 3:52 PM, LauraM wrote: I have 2 FIV who I keep with 2 FeLV+. Of course, he's using his cat box. He is so cute and purrs when we scratch under his chin even though he is frightened.
